I used a socket about the size of the armature to hold the brushes in place while sliding it over the armature.

I would just unbolt the brush holder from the back cover and put the brush holder on where you can get at the brushes easily then simply slide the back cover over the protruding bolt and reassemble as usual.

I build little "Z" clips out of small mechanic's wire or paper clip's. double wire and squeeze loop end tight. hold's brushes great!

I have a 16 hp. The starter worked once, then seized up. I turned the gear and it would only rotate part way, then stop. It felt like there was junk gumming up the bushings. I am sure I could have ordered a new lower brush kit and clean out the yuck but past experience has taught me this will be a short term fix for something that is 21 years old. I tried doing the brush truck and honestly, for the time, effort and then have it fail a month or two later doesn't make it worth fixing a made in Mexico part. I got a new starter delivered for $29. I can sell a few weed wackers I fixed and pay for the effort it took me to fix that crapped out started. The lower fiber block where the 12volt wire goes into, completely crumbled anyways. I do not expect these things to last,. This starter served its purpose for years, time for a change.

How did you get the top clip out above the starter gear?

Benny Hatton You can take a deep well socket or a piece of metal tubing that fits over the shaft but rest on the retaining collar and then you just tap it with a hammer which will slide the collar down toward the starter gear and you can pull the retainers out with a screwdriver or a pick

This was such a fantastic video thank you. I do have a question though, how would I run it for a minute? Connect it straight to the battery? Wouldn't that kill the battery? I also have a 1amp charger I can use to power it if that is possible. Thank you!

adam smith Thank you sir. What I usually do to run it is just hook it to another battery. it can be a battery laying loose or it can be a battery in one of my vehicles. Basically all you have to do is make sure you hook the hot post on the starter to the hot post on the battery first because it will arc slightly when you run it and you don’t want to bugger up the threads on your post. You can use jumper cables for this and hook them to your battery first then just make sure you hook the positive cable to the post on your starter lay it on the ground place your foot on top of the case because they do have quite a bit of torque when they start up and then just hook your ground (negative) cable to one of the lugs that holds the starter on to the engine. One amp charger is not going to be enough to run a starter Unfortunately.
