  • Ethiopia's new prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, has quickly transformed the country. Political prisoners have been released, opposition parties have been encouraged, and ethnic tensions have been eased. Most stunningly, the country has abruptly ended the longest war in Africa - a bloody border dispute with Eritrea that dragged on for two decades. Lou explains why hope is on the rise in the region even though serious problems remain.

Wait. Eritrea wasn't part of Ethiopia until 1941. when Italy was defeated and British government came to Eritrea and colonized Eritrea for 10 years until 1952and British handed over to the Ethiopian government at that time and they put Eritrea as part of Ethiopia .the only time Eritrea was part of Ethiopia was from 1952-1992 .not before this time thanks.

Of course Bahire Negash was was part of Ethiopia along with Tigrai and the Amhara regions starting 3 thousands years ago. And We all spoke one language Geez, and later today's languages developed. What you did is: separate a people who lived in peace and harmony for centuries. We know the outcome of your so called libertarian. Fact is, over 1million have fled, a country without a constitution, no higher learning (Asmara university is closed) a brutal dictatorship and no economic development at all.

its a very religious country, if it wasn't for their faith, the former government who ruled for 27 years stole a lot of money and killed and tortured many. Dr. Abiy is considered as moses who was sent from God to set Ethiopians free. Many of the former goverment officials are still in power and the past 2 months or so they have been trying really hard to cause doubts on him, by evoking ethnic conflicts in many regions. This is all because their love for power and hate for the rest of the people.

    • @eho6380

Ethiopia isn't religious. It's a Secular Nation and was since 1974 ruled by a Leninist-Atheistic Government, till 1991 of course. But it's still strongly secular and religious parties are forbidden.

In addition to the flights resuming,
    - The flights are now regular every Wednesday from Addis to Asmara on the Dreamliner.
    - The Ethiopian government is also repairing selected roads that lead to Eritrea.
    - Private TV networks are doing sort of a reconnection of lost families by giving contact addresses free of charge.
    - Eritrean ports are being repaired by the Ethiopian government to expand and bring up-to-par for use next year.
    - Ethiopia is brokering/mediating a peaceful solution to the Eritrea-Djibouti border dispute.
    - Alongside Eritrea, Ethiopia is supporting the lifting of sanctions by the UN on Eritrea to speed up the peace process.
I don't have much info from the tightly controlled Eritrean government about what they are doing about the peace and reconciliation process, so that's why the info is about what Ethiopia is doing.

My friend, politicians will always be politicians. The people are different. As far as I can tell you about many people here, including myself, have always been praying for this peace between us. PRAYING, not just wishing. I come from three different ethnicities (amhara, gurage, oromo), I'm Orthodox by faith and i was honestly in tears when i saw the Eritrean people in Asmara when the prime minister went there. I believe we are the same people, born from the same lands. Even now i refer to the red sea as Eritrean sea just as it is written in the Bible, if you saw it. I believe just through complications from historical happenings, politics, and politicians' issues, we came to be two nations. That's how i see Eritrea and Eritreans. The ports are not my problem or my issue.

But the new hope is the Eritrean people are woke and realize the situation, the Enough Is Enough Movement is moving like a wave throughout the Eritrean diaspora population who fled from the oppressive regime and the New Sparkling Eritrea will be a full fledged democracy.

War is a state of armed conflict between states, societies and informal groups, such as insurgents and militias.
It is generally characterized by extreme aggression, destruction, and mortality, using regular or irregular military forces.
Warfare refers to the common activities and characteristics of types of war, or of wars in general.
Total war is warfare that is not restricted to purely legitimate military targets, and can result in massive civilian or other non-combatant suffering and casualties.
While some scholars see war as a universal and ancestral aspect of human nature, others argue it is a result of specific socio-cultural or ecological circumstances.
The deadliest war in history, in terms of the cumulative number of deaths since its start, is World War II, from 1939 to 1945, with 60-85 million deaths, followed by the Mongol conquests at up to 60 million.
As concerns a belligerent's losses in proportion to its prewar population, the most destructive war in modern history may have been the Paraguayan War.
In 2003, Richard Smalley identified war as the sixth biggest problem (out of ten) facing humanity for the next fifty years.
In 2013, war resulted in 31,000 deaths, down from 72,000 deaths in 1990.
War usually results in significant deterioration of infrastructure and the ecosystem, a decrease in social spending, famine, large-scale emigration from the war zone, and often the mistreatment of prisoners of war or civilians.
For instance, of the nine million people who were on the territory of the Byelorussian SSR in 1941, some 1.6 million were killed by the Germans in actions away from battlefields, including about 700,000 prisoners of war, 500,000 Jews, and 320,000 people counted as partisans (the vast majority of whom were unarmed civilians).
Another byproduct of some wars is the prevalence of propaganda by some or all parties in the conflict, and increased revenues by weapons manufacturers.
