As well as a BMW iPhone integration solution, it also comes with built-in Android Auto for even greater flexibility. If you're looking for a way to get your favorite apps into your vehicle, check out how easy it is to DIY install our BMW CarPlay upgrade. Awesome video. I do have a couple of questions, i have both android and iPhone, which is a better deal when purchasing the MMI. The iPhone version or android version?
Also, can I have both devices paired at the same time (android via wifi and iPhone via USB)?
Screen mirrowing, does this work when the vehicle is in motion? Would this work with UA-cam videos for kids?
Can this be paired to headrest screen for back seat passengers?
Satellite radio, I have existing subscription, does this continue to work as normal?
Tx for addressing these questions.
1) CarPlay MMI Prime and Android Auto MMI Prime is the same retrofit, 2-in-1.
2) Yes, you can have 2 devices paired at the same time.
3) Yes, screen mirroring works while driving. UA-cam is not guaranteed. Last time we checked it worked but it might not work in the future. BMW block streaming services like that.
4) No, it can't be paired to headrest screen.
5) Yes, your satellite radio subscription will work as usual.
*BOOM* just done this, followed (almost) to the letter. There 4 screws in THE Head Unit, and the OEM video cable was wrapped in tape, which needed careful unwinding. Its not that easy to shove the unit down behind the head unit - but when I was done - about 2 hours later - all working and a great upgrade to my 2016 X5 M50 !! THANK YOU.
Thanks pal! Glad it all worked out well :)
Was it easy?
I installed this in two hours watching step by step. Thanks guys!
Great to hear!
If you have an F25 X3 with NBT, make sure you buy a 6 Pin Car LVDS Video Line Extension because the OEM cable from the NBT head unit to the monitor does not extend at all. Your only option at this point is to mount the MMI box behind the monitor which is something you do not want to do. There will be extra heat generated by the monitor and the MMI box. Buy the extension cable and install the MMI above the glove compartment where it has good space to mount it cleanly and neatly.
was it difficult? not in the mood of opening up my dash and fumbling through tons of cables,
@@sexylawyer8228 honestly. Not really. The extension cable will give you more installation choices.
Hell yeah! Thanks for the thorough video, I'm about to pick up a F15 M package X5 and wanted to do this mod right away! I'll def be linking your video to the video I end up making on my channel. Thanks! 🙌🏾
Thanks for that!
Just installed my MMI prime, short cables on my X5 , but with some patience it worked great, thanks for the detail instructions
Great to hear!
how is the sound quality via AUX is that like previous mmi?
amazing tutorial. had a couple questions. do the front , rear and surround cameras still work as they did before the mmi install? does this void warranty?
Hi! The system is designed to integrate with your factory park assist cameras. For example, when you shift into reverse, CarPlay will automatically switch back to your default iDrive view, so you'll see the view from the cameras exactly as you do now. It also won't void your warranty when properly installed, and installation is 100% reversible, too. Thanks!
Do the reverse cameras come on automatically when the car is in reverse? Also if I press the 360 surround cameras does it automatically pop up?
Cool install instructions! Thinking about the upgrade for my F15 but a few questions:
If you use the wireless wifi connection do you have to repair the wifi connection each time you start the car or will it remember the wifi connection and automatically connect without having to constantly re-pair?
You'll only need to complete the initial pairing once. After that, everything's remembered.
The video is great and very detailed, but I have one more question. Does the head up display work while carplay is in use? is the navigation displayed in the head up when googlemaps is used?
Hi, thanks a lot! The head up display will work, but there will not be any information from the MMI displayed. It is only able to show the information from the OEM BMW screen.
Awesome products and great efforts like always! Keep us posted with those precious videos! Thanks a million!
Hey Guys, thanks for the detailed video, I have a 2013 f10 with NBT where I already installed a unit. And now looking to get one for my f15 X5 so just trying to familiarise myself with the process. I noticed no wiring harness going to the mic port above the driver, the Idrive port, or the aux input on your video. Is that not necessary on the F15? Im sure I had to run the wires on my f10.
Hi,
If your vehicle will need the mic harness and the aux input will depend on your vehicles model and head unit please contact our sales team with your car’s VIN so we can answer your question for your specific vehicle ;) www.bimmer-tech.net/page-contact
Is there a trick to remove the trim around the cluster? I can't seem to get it out. Great video.
Thank you! Our Support team have already contacted you about this, please check your email
Very well done video, thank you.
Glad you appreciate it, Bob!
Thank you for your video, i have one question, when you are in the carplay interface, does the oem reverse camera interface jump out automatically when shifting to reverse gear?
Thank you
Yes, it does.
Thank you for asking (and answering). This is something that I was very much interested in but couldn't seem to find clarity on elsewhere.
Great tutorial, very easy to follow
Thanks! We appreciate it :)
Good video. If I don't use the included USB cable, can it be set up and used with an iPhone wirelessly (while the iPhone is being charged by the BMW USB in the armrest console)?
Thank you :) Yes, it works wirelessly. You do not have to use the cable from the set. It can be charged and used simultaneously.
Awesome video. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Great video! Would be the same installation proceed for X1?
Hey Jesus!
We've done installation for X1: ua-cam.com/video/FfG2OlW_-z0/v-deo.html
If you mean newer models, you'd have to wait for it, but it's coming :)
Awesome instructional video. Thanks much. On question though. Where do you take out the USB cable through? I can’t find any potential slit or hole in the front panel. Thanks much!
Thanks a lot ;) There is no hole for the USB cable itself, it comes out in a spot where the trim pieces connect
@@bimmer-tech Okay I will try. Hope either the trims or the cable won't be damaged. Thank you.
@@bimmer-tech I came to comments to ask this same question. I did the mod on my 08 E70 and was able to snake the USB into the glove box. Wonder if that's possible with the F15.
Does it use the factory microphone for voice commands?
Yes, it's completely integrated with the factory hardware.
So you have to use the usb supplied to plug your phone in correct? Can’t use the one in the arm rest?
If you're using this over a wired connection, yes, you have to use the dedicated USB socket, not your BMW's existing one. We know some people have added an extension to the CarPlay MMI Prime USB cable so they can thread it to the armrest or elsewhere in their vehicle, but it's still a separate socket
@@bimmer-tech If anyone has a solution and how they added an extension to run to the armrest, would appreciate their comment.
Well, I use Apple. After setting up wired and then wireless, I have never used the plug in again. I have it per the BT video, hidden just outside the console tucked and you cannot see it.
Hi, how to fit the box inside? I try but all the cable is hard to fit. Is that enough room just push it inside or need to put on specific area?
Hi! You should be able to fit the MMI Prime in the cavity between the head unit and the glovebox. The easiest way of access is dropping the glovebox.
@@bimmer-tech okkk, thank you. I tried to put it under the HU and it make me frustrated.
Hi! After turning on the car, how long does it take to recognize the phone wirelessly and show the carplay interface automatically on the display?
Hello, it depends on the factors such as: MMI software version, phone model, if the car was fully locked, or it was in standby mode, if the phone will be trying to connect to another device at the same time, etc.
It normally takes about 7-10 seconds to be able to move to CarPlay, after full lock of the car.
I have a BMW F15 2014, with the small 6" screen. Is it possible to upgrade to the 10.25" screen and also retrofit CarPlay?
Here's the product, but I recommend you ask our sales team if that will work in F15 X5: www.bimmer-tech.net/products-10-25-inch-idrive-screen-adapter-f30-f32
It is possible by replacing the whole system. We do have NBT EVO retrofit in our inventory :)
how is the quality of the sound?
Hi I have a question. Is there a need to swap the factory display cable for your one? It seems like it would be easier taking the cable out the back of the head unit and then connecting it to the mmi box introducing the bypass there? Seems like it would make one less step and no need to remove the display.
Hi, no there's no need to do it. The installation should look like on the video.
Great how to 👏🏼 🙏
Glad you liked it!
@@bimmer-techjust a quick one but do does it cause any issues disconnecting & reconnecting the battery, as in, do you need to re-register the battery or clear any codes at all? 🙏 thanks guys
Hi, I installed it following the instructions included and now almost everything works. Thanks. Have a couple questions about the phone calls. When I have an incoming phone call I can’t answer neither using the buttons on the steering wheel nor using idrive knob. I can choose between the answer and decline buttons on the screen but when I push it nothing happens. Can only answer using my phone. How can I fix it? Can’t find any settings for that.
Another concern is incoming calls appearing. When I’m driving using the navigator and got the call I only can see the call screen then and can’t return to the navigator until I ended that call. Is there any way to fix it? I mean like splitting the screen between navy and phone, or getting calls on a background.
Thank you in advance for the answer.
Hi Igor! If you have that kind of problem, please contact our support team - support@bimmer-tech.net. Equip yourself with your car's VIN and describe the issue.
After all, please let us know if the issue is solved :)
Cheers!
Did you get this solved?
Did you connect the AUX cable? Regarding the video you didn’t. I didn’t connect it as well and have no sound
Hi Igor! Sorry to hear that? Did you follow the instruction attached to the product?
@@bimmer-tech I followed this video
Hi looking into buying this for my 2014 X5, and so I've taken out my head unit to get an idea of the logistics. I don't see/feel the space where the MMI box can go. What am I missing? Thanks!
You might need to take out the glovebox compartment in order to fit the MMI Prime module in the cavity between the head unit and the glovebox.
hi daniel, did you figure that out, i am thinking to get one and I have the 2014 x5
i have a 2016 BMW x5 40e Hybrid. do i need to disconnect the high voltage battery or just the 12-volt battery?
:If only the 12V battery is disconnected, the vehicle is not de-energized due to the auxiliary battery. Both batteries must be disconnected so that the vehicle is completely de-energized.
Is it compatible with BMW X5 2015 model?
Sure, but compatibility depends on your iDrive version. You can go here: www.bimmer-tech.net/category-bmw-carplay-mmi-retrofit and put in your VIN to check whether it's going to work in your car. Thanks!
can you still access car service history after installing this device?
Hi,
yes, the MMI will not affect the service history.
Can the dealership do this?
yes, we have an installers web, so you can choose one that is closest to your place :) www.bimmer-tech.net/page-installers
Is it possible to listen to the factory XM/Sirius radio once this is installed?
Absolutely, you can toggle through your factory iDrive menu and the MMI by long pressing the menu button.
After installing, my AC control and audio control underneath are not responsive. Any tips? I made checked the blue and black connectors and they are connected properly.
Feel free to head over to www.bimmer-tech.net/page-contact to get in touch with our support team. They'll be able to help you check everything's been set up correctly Thanks!
Hi! I have a f30 base without the combox. Can this still be retrofitted in the car?
Yes, this retrofit doesn't require a combox.
Will the mmi for f20 also work with a f10
Hi Willie! It really all depends on the head unit from both vehicles. If you are willing to swap MMI Prime from F20 to F10, it would be best to contact our support team: support@bimmer-tech.net. Give your car's VIN and describe the situation - our team will help you out :)
Cheers!
Is there any way to have apple CarPlay startup straight away every time?
Once you pair up your phone with CarPlay, it should start up every time it recognizes your phone anywhere near it - even if it's in your bag or pocket.
@@bimmer-tech thanks bimmer tech... premature question before testing it out a few times...
@@bimmer-tech How do I get spotify to resume playing music automatically? right now i have to press play everytime (phone or car), whether car has turned off for 5 minutes or over night
I have a 2015 BMW X5, XDrive35i, will this work? If so, how much is this mod?
Whether it works or not will depend on your head unit, but with your car it will most likely work :) You can check your compatibility and the price for your specific vehicle here: www.bimmer-tech.net/category-bmw-carplay-mmi-retrofit
@@bimmer-tech Are there any professionals here in the Austin Texas area who can do the install?
@BimmerTech - I just purchased this device for my 2016 BMW X3 xDrive28i. Do you have a similar video for the device's installation in an X3 as well please? Or do I just follow this very video?
Unfortunately we don't have an installation video for the X3 F25 model available yet. The X5 installation looks pretty much the same. Additionally we'll send you all the instructions in pdf for your exact model.
Where do i buy the MMI kit? thx
Hi! Here you have the product page: www.bimmer-tech.net/category-bmw-carplay-mmi-retrofit
Hi I just installed the MMI unit and my music seems to skip/lag, also my phone doesn't seem to consistently switch over to the car speakers, and responsiveness when scrolling/ navigating is unreasonably slow or completely unresponsive at times. Is there an update or a way to address this? I was willing to pay the premium beyond some of the other options on ebay out there/ other chinese solutions because typically these are the types of issues not worked out by products on ebay and the like (and because of the reputation of bimmertech), so I'm hoping this is addressable.
Hi James, sorry to hear you've been having problems with your unit. Feel free to head over to www.bimmer-tech.net/page-contact to get in touch with our support team. They'll be able to help you check everything's been set up correctly and you're running the latest software version. Thanks!
Does it use the oem microphone?
Yes, it's fully integrated with your hardware.
any help with microphone? my mic doesn’t work for calls/ siri functions.
In that case you can check the microphone harness and its connector if there haven’t been any damage. To use Siri, the newest version of the MMI software is needed. To check whether there is an update available for your MMI please contact the BimmerTech support.
Please note that using Siri in cars equipped with the BMW Voice Command will prompt both Siri and Voice Command at the same time and might cause problems. In that case, we recommend not using Siri or getting the Voice Command coded out of your vehicle.
volume control does not function as normal. It increase and decrease volumes but does not show the volume level
Hi Sammy! if you have issues with our gear, please contact our support team - support@bimmer-tech.net. Equip yourself with your car's VIN and describe the problem!
@@bimmer-tech no there’s no issues . Was just wondering why the volume does not show although it increases & decreases as desired
2016 X5 with NBT Have purchased and installed. I moved the fiberoptic green cable over and started up. Car play is on screen but no sound. I cannot get the AUX to set to be used for sound as I try to highlight and select but will not do?
Hi Bruce, in some vehicles it's necessary to reprogram your iDrive to activate the AUX input, but if you're seeing it on the menu, that probably isn't the case for you. Your best bet is to head over to www.bimmer-tech.net/contact and drop an email to our support team with your order number. They'll be able to check your vehicle specification and let you know if anything else needs to be done. Thanks!
But I never got the screen mirroring to work whether AirPlay or USB. It just says to connect android device. Which I have an iPhone but it still doesn’t do anything. And when you try to AirPlay it tells you to disconnect “CarPlay” which seems odd, and then connect to WiFi. So I do but it does nothibg
Hi, please contact our support team with your order number: www.bimmer-tech.net/page-contact. They'll walk you through the process of enabling screen mirroring and check what might be the cause of your problem.
Did you ever get it to work?
Does this work it’s ID4 on a 2014 X5?
We'd have to make sure by checking your VIN. Please send the last 7 characters of your VIN to our sales team and they'll check the compatibility: www.bimmer-tech.net/page-contact
Hi, will this work on nbt evo units or only nbt units? Thanks
Mark, the only NBT EVO unit will work is the ID4. It does work on every other NBT, Entry and EntryNav head units too.
BimmerTech hi thanks for the reply, so just to confirm as I have id4 nbt evo the module will NOT work with this?

Hi Hugo, was this issue ever fixed? I'm looking to get this unit, but want to make sure I can still pick up calls when connected to bluetooth device in the car.
So I installed a different brand retro carplay in my wife's 2015 BMW X5, and the phone call feature sucks! There is no EQ setting that will allow the caller to hear you properly without feedback from the speakers. Is there any way for this head unit to be installed and used for maps and media on the display unit while still allowing phones to run through the BMW native iDrive? Or does the mic/speaker eq in the Bimmer Tech MMI work flawlessly? Im looking to put this unit in my 2016 X5 with the 360 park assets cam Front and Rear factory cams along with cooled seats. any thing there that might trigger it not to be compatible? Thanks!
It seems like you're having echo problems in your car. We can check if that would also appear after adding our MMI, but we'd need your VIN for that so please contact our support team at support@bimmer-tech.net and tell them about the issue. As for the MMI Prime itself, it will definitely be compatible with everything you have in the car and won't be invasive for other features.
I don't know what to do, I have a bmw x5 (f15) from 2015 and it has very bad fuel consumption ... between 18mpg and 22mpg (driven in the city) But when I type on google the combined fuel consumption looks totally different (between 41.5mpg and 47mpg) which which is not good at all (the car doesn't seem to have problems and I don't understand why it consumes so much....
Hey Marius! There are two options - either your driving style is very sporty or you should go and visit your BMW service.
Take care! :)

BimmerTech its only the music and Navigationfunction of the headupdisplay. I think there is no solution
Hi, did you fix the problem? I'm thinking about to get one, mine car has head up system also.
Edison C no
@@bimmer-tech Is this expected, or should the HUD continue working as usual? My Car also has a HUD and I would hate not having all its features enabled in exchange for CarPlay. The way I see it the MMI module should be an addition to, not a tradeoff. Please confirm.
many say that the sound is degraded because it goes through the AUX connection.
Audio quality is as you'd expect through the AUX connection, no different than any other unit that connects in the same way. That's more than good enough for a lot of people, but it might depend on your usage (whether you want navigation directions, podcasts, music etc.) and how discerning your ear is. You could always try connecting whatever you have to the AUX port and seeing how you like the sound.
If the quality of BMW's AUX input isn't good enough for you, then your only real option is switching out your iDrive unit for an NBT Evo ID6, because anything else is probably going to need you to run the audio into your iDrive through the AUX port. If you've got any questions about this or other solutions, get in touch with our team at info@bimmer-tech.net and let them know your VIN, so we'll be able to check exactly what we can do in your vehicle. Thanks!
@@bimmer-tech I have Harmon Kardon and the sound is very good through AUX connection. I have asked people on phone calls and no issue also.
Maybe a great product, but the price is not too attractive
When getting our CarPlay you're not only getting the product, but also the broad technical support to help you with the install and further use. Hence the price :)
Is this wireless CarPlay?
Yes its wireless CarPlay, or you can choose to use the wired option, plus it gives you Android auto if you have an Android Phone
