I realize this is kinda of a vanilla take on the camera but I missed the $5,495 price tag which would have undoubtedly tainted my enthusiasm. Also, technically, the Logmar S8 Chatham camera was another modern Super 8 camera but they only produced 50 units in 2015. They're the ones who designed the original version with Kodak some years ago. I will probably buy the camera just to cover it on the channel and see if it has any redeeming qualities. I have some theories as to why it's priced over $5K, but we'll get to that in the review! Get on the reservation list: www.kodak.com/en/motion/page/super-8-camera/
@@adzbasslines268 The inflation theory is one that I debunk in my latest video: ua-cam.com/video/lB38g20Fj30/v-deo.html
Only $5,495 how generous of Kodak
Wow, they are going to flop HARD. You can get movie quality cameras for way less. I've seen 100ft 16mm movie quality cameras for like $700 to $2000. As for old Super 8 cameras, the most I've seen them go for is $300. This just isn't worth the price for what's being offered.
yaaaah, Damn damn ! 😂😂😂
I guess the briefcase costs $5000… then you have the camera! 😅
@@metal6948 You can get decent 16mm cameras for
There's a coffee brand called Fellow that makes kettles and grinders and they have a pelican case that fits all their appliances for $1,000 @@pramitmitra
so it sat on the shelf since 2016 and looks like they haven't changed a thing since then. And limited quantities means they don't think this will sell so why mass produce. This reminds me when Kodak made that crypto mining device. This camera will follow the same path I imagine
Only 5495 bucks???!!!!.....I will take three!!!
What a bargain!!!
Lol
🤣😂🤣😂😉
I was so excited about this until I saw the price. I couldn't afford half of this camera.
Check these out: www.pro8mm.com/collections/super-8-cameras
I’m a Super-8 (film, in general) enthusiast myself and sell refurbished and film-tested cameras on eBay and locally. Gotta say - LOTS of options out there that are far more economical and interesting for shooting S-8.
And honestly - it’s the vintage aesthetic that most people like about the format, so sound sync really is not a feature that warrants spending thousands more. You want sound and cleaner footage, shoot 4K+ on your phone or a m43 (for a lightweight setup and fantastic lenses) or DSLR if you don’t mind a little more weight.
You could buy 2 or 3 good, tested vintage super 8 movie cameras and enough film stock (40+ film cartridges, processing and transfer bundles from Pro8mm) and have enough footage for a feature length film and STILL be spending $1000 less than just the Kodak camera… (close to $6000 after tax).
And… have to say, whether it’s super-8, 16mm, medium format stills… it’s a great experience using vintage equipment. Some of it is just art in itself.
That said, kudos for Kodak for trying. It may not be for everybody (6,000 bucks), but pros and wealthy enthusiasts can use it and perhaps with volume it’ll come down a little in price over the next few years.
‘Til then, so many fun vintage cameras to use… and for a fraction of a fraction of the price…
Long live film! 🙂
Price is too high 🤦🏿♂️🤦🏿♂️
classic kodak move with the price. they almost purposefully sabotage their business
The final price point isn't 100% their fault. I'll have a video on why soon.
@@joshmcdarris fair point,... But with Kodak's current commitment to manufacture film set to expire in 1029, potentially that only gives a few years of using this camera. If I were Kodak, I would do everything in my power to get people in to film as cheap as possible. Most projects don't require s8 footage and this is more for nostalgia. My two cents...
that shit is going to fail hard..... especially at that price..... as a filmmaker....this is laughable. At that price and quality point.. just use my phone and apply some filter and get much better results. Fuck nostalgia at that price point... seriously. lol
😂😂😂 Fuck nostalgia
Lol Nostalgia is nice, but the price has to be realistic. I posted a reply elsewhere but you could get 3 nice/tested vintage cams and enough film/processing/transfer for a feature length film and still be spending less than what Kodak is asking.
And I believe (myself included) a lot of people enjoy shooting the format on vintage cameras - that’s part of the fun/appeal.
Yeah, I love S-8, but will never, ever spend that much on a s-8 cam.
No doubt. People keep rediscovering film. There's a reason we burried it once digital came out.
Not with its target audience, it won't. Kodak knew just who they were marketing this to: anyone who would otherwise be looking at the Pro8mm Classic. This is not meant for the average hipster doofi that would buy something like this just to be ironic. As for putting a filter on your iPhone footage, it's gonna look just like that...iPhone footage with a filter on it. I'll take the real thing everytime.
Damn I was so hyped for this thing when it was first announced 😔
me too
For sure. If I can get my hands on one I'll be discussing pros/cons, why it's so expensive, alternatives, etc. I'm talking to Kodak's media team right now and there's definitely some drama behind it all.
Weren't we all. But luckily I have my Rollei SL83 thank you very much. Stopping into
b and h to buy a few film cartridges for it today.
This is such a baffling marketing position from Kodak. Super 8 cameras were a consumer product, but this camera is priced in the same range as professional cinema cameras while only having enthusiast connections (3.5mm vs XLR, micro HDMI vs SDI).
As it stands, this is a really bad mish-mash and it’s hard to see it succeeding. I’d love to see this start some sort of film revival in the indie space, but I don’t see that happening.
I think most people buying this camera are going to be production companies who need/want the super 8 look for a shoot. Film alone is way too expensive for consumers unless you're into expensive hobbies. I like the addition of the audio input but I'd probably only use it for a scratch track and record separately. Micro HDMI is a weird choice though, for sure. Needs to be at least full hdmi if not SDI. I think they'll sell well initially but probably be discontinued in the near future. Won't be worth the costs.
No one will buy it.
@@drsjamesserraagree. Won't even sell well initially. It's just too expensive for what it is.
From a consumer's point of view I would not touch any camera hardware at all. Throughout the last 3 decades their hardware product portfolio was always badly managed and badly developed. Their marketing department was not functioning even when they were at the hight of innovation. It continued to be like that after they filee bankruptcy.
Kodak remains a fuck up.
Kodak USA only owns the facilities.
Kodak Alaris of UK owns the rights to manufacture films and the distubution network. KODAK Chemicals have been sold off to to Chinese Sino Promise, a cimonay that distributes Printing Machines in China. The Chemical Branch was sold to fund the UK Kodak pension scheme or something.
Since analogue photography is soaring again, and it was forecasted, I wonder why it was sold anyway to China?
The only thing Kodak could do right is manufacturing films. They are one of very few companies who can do that on a bigger scale.
Anyway, in my opinion, Kodak remains a fucked up company.

‘Til then, Kodak… keep making great film stocks. And we’ll keep shooting it!
Buy Arri and fix it in post, way cheaper. Just saw this: A standard Super 8 cartridge holds around 50ft (15 metres) of film, good for 3600 frames At 24fps, this means about two and a half minutes, it will cost $50 to develop the film, then you have to wait and you have only 15 seconds of usable footage. Nobody will buy this!
If you want a good scan you can actually do something with in post you're looking at $100. But then Kodak originally intended to bundle film services to make it easier (not sure about cheaper) for people to get into film and share footage online. Hopefully they sell enough of these cameras to get back on track with that vision.
Really dissapointed with Kodak. The Super 8 camera is just unaffordable, and I sooo DISLIKE the odd video style camera body. No real film viewfinder either? Kodak team, what on earth were you thinking? You're supposed to make the Super 8 camera and film affordable for all, not put people off. Take note of all the comments across social media, it might help you. Here endith the lesson :)
Not even a backwards group like the Taliban would use super 8. There's a reason we abandoned that year's ago.
You can buy a mint condition finely working Bolex 16mm for around $2,000........buy two of those instead
It's not the super 8 look, but yeah. I feel ya. If you want crystal sync though you're going to have to upgrade your camera. For super 8 you could go with a Classic Pro from Pro8mm. Still going to cost more, but it'll have more useful features, IMHO, than the Kodak Super 8 Cam.
Buy film stock and process for the rest of the money.
I threw a mint condition one in the garbage once digital came out and never looked back.
Man, I'm glad you sent them that email and finally got them going. Thank you.
Yeah no Kodak can stay in the dark we don’t need Kodak
What is the price of film
bhpho.to/47wmqQc
On the average, forty bucks a pop for the Vision3 negative stocks, maybe $30 for Tri-X black and white, and almost 60 for Ektachrome 100D.
Only took 10 years
😂
I really gotta wonder how much of the delay was because of Logmar's throwing all their attentions elsewhere. It'd be interesting to see how much of their original design is still in there.
@@cubdukatyou don’t know what you’re mumbling about…
I use my Canon 1014 XL-S camera with crysatl sync upgrade. Much better lens and features than Kodak super 8 camera.
5 grand.. tiny spool to record like what.. 2 minures of footage.. arm and a leg for development... what a bloody joke..
If it shoots in 16X9 will it still run on my 1980 Sankyo super 8 projector?
Yea, but may not show all the frame. Lol
@@VintageVantage79 You'd lose part of the right side of the frame, since the gate extends into that area where the magnetic stripe used to be.
US$5,495. It's a joke, Kodak is riding the retro wave with this one, they're going to take on water!!
If anything, this whole analog re evolution is a love letter to yesterday’s future generations. While I don’t think 8 track players are set to stage a resurgence in the audiophile world it’s only because record players were never unseated. Cassette players are attempting to make a play so to speak. Common sense is likely to prevent super8, Betamax , 8 bit and other such vernacular to be relevant to developing technologies. If Kodak wants my money they will license their terminology and likeness to Olympus and I will fall in love with the girl I never met. Joe Walsh wrote desperado for the eagles but this particular line was considered too depressing of a thought. Changed from the queen of hearts is the one you’ve never met to the queen of hearts is always your best bet. The next big thing is usually something different than what has been but not always and not always for the better.
There are different reasons for analog comebacks. For instance there’s a cult following for VHS but it’s purely nostalgia. Vinyl records are more of an audiophile thing. Cassette tapes, again, pure nostalgia. I feel like the Kodak super 8 camera is somewhere in between. It looks cool and has a nostalgic feel to it (vhs or cassette tape) but the price tag isn’t really worth the quality of footage you’re getting out of it. And unlike vinyl where you buy a record, player, some speakers and you’re in business, you have to jump through a bunch of hoops: buy, shoot, develop, scan and color correct, etc. In a world where everything is instant, not that many people want to deal with that for nostalgia sake alone. So only professionals (and the independently wealthy) who have the budget to try a new camera and play with the format are going to use it. My advice: get a refurbed camera from Pro8mm or something off eBay if you’re not afraid of (potentially) refurbing one yourself.
...I don't know, I'm not convinced by this. I mean, it would have been ideal
that when recording on tape, immediately
can be digitalized on the memory card, so there
would be no need to have it revealed...
better off with the big brother 16mm, interesting nonetheless
Unless you just want the kinda choppy, low-res super 8 look. Otherwise, yeah, just go 16.
@@joshmcdarris why pay 5 grand for super 8 tho, when there’s a plethora of super 8 cameras available on eBay. This is excluding development cost which is a constant. Nice review nonetheless’
Yeah .
But at a cost of around 5 to 6 thousand dollars.
Digital vs FILM
No thanks
It seems like a nice video camera. but I fear that this product will never be marketed in my country (the Netherlands).
It's not a video camera (though it does offer a 'video preview.') It is loaded with super 8 motion picture film.
Hi Josh, is there any similar alternative to Super-8 that is not so terribly expensive for hobbyists (film material, development, digitization)? What I like about it is the authentic analog film look. It doesn't have to be so grainy or pastel-colored. But also not as home video-like as VHS.
Not really. Super 8 is about as cheap as it gets for motion picture film. You can find pretty inexpensive cameras on ebay, buy film in bulk directly from Kodak to save money, and do some looking around on Google for less expensive processing/scanning packages. Best alternative is to find some good plugins or tutorials to replicate the film look if you just want to shoot digital and still get a similar look.
Make it digital, make the new digital bolex, that is all we want!
I'm curious to see how this camera is and what filmmakers think. It's not an option for enthusiasts starting out, but considering how expensive some mirrorless camera's are nowadays, it's not totally far fetched the price. I think this could be a possibly great option if you're making a short film or hey, maybe even a feature, you have a budget to accomodate the cost of the camera itself, buying and scanning film etc. It has features that could make it much easier to work with.
S8 has very limited use cases compared with say, a mirrorless camera. If you want the film look you can get a Blackmagic camera for around $1200. S8 has a great look for the right project though, if you can wrangle the budget for film.
@@joshmcdarris That makes sense, it definitely wouldn’t be a camera for all kind of projects. It is nice to see a modern super 8 film camera that has features to make it easier to navigate in today’s world. Film has a unique quality and for certain projects it would be great indeed.
their pricing is crap. Buy is for 5.5k then sell is for 8k
Can we add monitor on this camera
Yep. With the hdmi port.
