I love Super 8 despite its limitations. The only reason that keeps me from shooting more of it is the price of purchasing the cartridge, the developing process and scanning it. Paying about 100€ for about 3.5 minutes is just too expensive for me.
That’s why I’m focusing more on VHS and Mini-DV even though these formats are still entirely different

I find it amazing how a camera and format that seems obsolete to modern media could have features that you’d never expect

This is the best Super-8 camera review (for any camera) I have ever seen. So organized, covers everything, and best of all it's loaded with actual Super-8 footage from the camera.

I love it when you make those Super 8 films. There is really nothing quite like it. I have my own project still in the planning phase, and seeing how the footage looks in your videos makes me super excited to start filming. But there is still a lot of preparation to be done. Still, thanks for the inspiring work!

Nikon has the odd habit of dipping briefly into a product segment and producing some of the best gear of all time. I use my R10 in macro mode most of the time to take advantage of the reflex viewfinder and leave wider compositions for 16mm and regular 8mm.

I have a R8 model. You really don't need a functional auto exposure to work with those model of cameras as the AE is broken on mine. Just use the manual exposure dial below the lens and your phone's light meter application.

Cool! I had a Nikon 8X Super Zoom (already old at the time) when I was a teen in the late 1970s -- and yeah, not very feature rich, but it did have a very good lens and felt solid (compared to the contemporary plastic Super 8 cameras at the time). If you are getting tired of your R10 -- you can send it my way!!!!!!

Thank you, great video(/Super8)! Yes that reminds me of my Bauer A508 which had pretty much the very same full feature set, including rewind and cross-fade. Was a pleasure to use for many years and many reels. The lens was never as sharp as my earlier Zeiss-Ikon camera for 1/4 the price. These days my favorite camera is a stereoscopic 3D Full-HD digital camera, 60 FPS, and it looks glorious with 3D-projector on a 260" white wall. The fun continues.

One trick I heard of for reverse motion filming is that you can rotate the camera upside down while filming, then in post. You cut that bit out, rotate it back to correct orientation and splice it into the edited reel. The film will then go in reverse. Though, as I type this out. I do realize that, that trick was used mainly on film that had perforations on each side. Like standard 16 and 35mm. Super8 being single perf on one side means it can't be rotated cleanly like that. But... I guess, if you rotate the film AND flop it so emulsion is on the other side, you can get reverse action with the caveat of the image being mirrored. Mag stripe soynd track wouldn't work, I guess. But noone sells film with mag tracks for filming. And if you put the mag track on in post, you can still do it on the reversed flopped footage.
If course, this is all academic at this point. As we do post in digital form and it's just a matter of a right click menu setting in most NLE's. But IF you REALLY want to do a full 100 ft reel of slow mo reverse action that you can project in a super8 projector... You technically can... Providing you can accept the mirrored image 😂

Man, I picked up an R10 in about 2009 at Goodwill for about $5, and then gave it away in about 2011 because there wasn’t much in the way of Super8 resources back then.
Wish I had hung on to it.

Although I have yet to finish shooting the test roll for my Nikon R10 I have to agree that it is one of the most delightful prosumer-grade Super 8 cameras out there! I personally find the hefty steel frame more of a comfort than a nuisance since it leads to more stable handheld shooting as well as being more drop resistant than cheaper, plastic cameras. The only major complaint I have is that most of the screws are hidden under the leather patches, making repairs more difficult and time-consuming if the need arises.
In regards to sound recording I was unaware they sold audio tape that amounted to a Super 8 film base coated with iron oxides. I had assumed there was an adapter cable with the flash-type connection on one end and a more typical audio output on the other, that way one could simply plug that into the mic input on a compact cassette deck and record audio alongside a sync pulse (should be relatively simple to Frankenstein together such a cable). The proprietary Super 8 tape recorder you showed might not be necessary to get at least some form of playback off of the tapes you have; it should be possible to play it on a regular reel-to-reel machine made for quarter-inch tape. This approach will almost definitely not play the recordings at the right speed and the arrangement of the sound heads probably aren't ideal for capturing the whole area of the tape, but it's an option. I hope this helps!

p.s- gotta find a compact steady solution to shooting with Super8 which is not a tripod, and could still help you get rid of those small jitters.
Those to occur because of how small this format is, and how you could zoom in so much. Even if you're steady- shots don't come out so steady compared to on a full frame DSLR, say [just for comparison].
Thought of mounting it onto a Zacuto Enforcer [still not gonna get rid of all of those jitters and shakes]. Maybe only a shoulder rig with a counter weight could achieve that...

I'm a total newb to super8, i purchased a Nizo S128 and bought some pro8mm 200T film to test out while at a comic con next month. My question is how do you read the light meter in relationship to the film stock? With batteries in my camera, the meter does move depending on how much light is pointed toward camera, but I wonder if I should just set it manually since i'll have bright even lighting on the show floor...just don't know which number to lock it in on for the type of film I have.

Great video Noah. I’d love an R10 one day but really don’t do nearly enough with my Eumig 128XL already to justify buying a second camera, let alone one as costly as the Nikon. Most drug habits are more affordable than dabbling with Super 8 😅

I have a 6080 which has all of the features you mention in this video + 25p mode, which is why I picked it up ✌️it also is powered up by 6 AA rechargeable batteries, including the meter 😉 as far as I know many “newer” Nizo models don’t need the Mercury battery 😇

Pozdrawiam
