Dare to Be Different in a Datsun 240Z

- Owner Dave Scholz, shares his connection with a Japanese cult classic that could easily be regarded as the 911 of Japan. Its iconic beauty, modular mechanics, and desirability inspired Dave to heed to Datsun's famous racing campaign of the '70s, "Dare to be different."
American heads spun when the 1970s ultimately snuffed out their beloved horsepower-drunk muscle cars. As the world watched them squirm for performance, Japan was busy developing the 240Z to bring a new thrill to American roads using balance, harmony, and technology.
"Datsun didn't invent the overhead cam engine, or disc brakes, or independent suspension but it has a habit of incorporating these sophisticated systems into brilliantly conceived and easily affordable cars." (Car and Driver; June, 1970)

Had to come back to hear it again
And again, and again, and again....
What is it that makes his car sound so good? Is it the Rebello engine or the exhaust?
+raife1218 I'm asking myself the same thing. Its probably the best sounding vehicle I've ever heard :)
coming back for the sound every few months
raife1218 the exhaust is a straight pipe, so that's what makes it loud but it's the engine that makes it sound good as well. they make a nice noise at high rpm and it helps that his is bored over and pretty much a built race motor.
and again...
Hard to believe it's been 8 years but I still come back to listen
Yeah, it sounds great
How has your life been, got any cars you dreamt of?
@@anjr6282 I'm overdue to watch it my life has gotten a lot more busy I've been dealing with cancer issues for the last 2 years but I still love the sound of the car I'll never own electric could I'd rather drive a slow car that makes a good noise and anything that sounds like a damn vacuum cleaner
So am i
Probably about the 20th time I’ve watched this exact video, the sound brings me back every time
I come back once a month just for the beautiful sound the car makes
mzondi1970 Man, i just come back every week, i want a 240Z so much ...
Sadly like a lot of the Japanese classics the prices are climbing. Findin a decent one will be tough
They're climbing like the prices of all the classics today, no ? Or only Japanese classics in particular ?
anything from the 60s and 70s are climbing. The world has finaly caught on that old Japanese cars are collectable
+mzondi1970 buying one in japan would be cheap right?
This was the first video by Petrolicious I watched and I was 15 at the time. I started saving money and looked basically over the whole US on craigslist. A couple weeks ago I found the perfect Z down in Tennessee and had it shipped up. 2 years of saving and now I have an awesome 78 Black Pearl.
That sounds like an awesome story. Enjoy your project.
Enjoy it, and please drive it, don't keep it in the garage
+10mars6pa Realizing what your dream car is and buying it because of Petrolicious? Damn, this channel should feature your story of having your car.
+10mars6pa I too saw this video at a prelicense age, 14 I think. It inspired me to scour the upper United States looking for the perfect Z. I ended up finding one in Nebraska which is about 7 hours from Minneapolis, convinced my dad that I needed this car. We drove down that Friday night to pick it up on Saturday morning. The 72' 240Z is a perfect California car. It pains me to write this up as I am in the last week or so of drivable weather.
+10mars6pa +Mitchell Wagner Im gonna join in with you guys as well and say that the same exact thing happened to me because it did! 15 years old when I saw the vid, searched for months until I finally found the perfect one here in Texas. 17 now and I own a 1972 lime yellow Z :D Pretty cool how powerful a video can be.
Still watching this video 5 years later. This is why you don't put an LS in a Datsun this sounds so fantastic
i love that you’re still commenting. this really is one of those videos that you gotta keep coming back too.
@@teddyn3051 certainly is. On the so important in the driving experience for me in this car sounds incredible
Love to see you coming back. I come once or twice a month...this is my favourite car ever
This is a lovely sports car. Sounds glorious, looks sexy and has a great story.
Me too buddy
7 years later.. Because of this video, I finally own a 240z. I still watch this video regularly
Woah i might buy one soon :0
If it still exist...
I'm still looking for one... They are like $50k+ in Austalian now...
I love petrolicious videos but I keep coming back to this one . The sound is incredible
same.
mzondi1970 dude, I've been back countless times for the sound. It stirs my soul more than anything else.
Still coming? I am
Still coming back? I am!
@@jockey101 Yup! me 2
a year ago I watched this video and I wanted a Z more than anything. This vid lit some kind of hellacious fire under my ass and I set out to find one. After about 6 months I found one. 1977 z in 411 yellow.... I'm a broke college kid and ended up selling my 2001 Jetta and took the money to buy the z.... and I've never looked back since. Thank you Dave for causing me to make one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Chris Laswell wow thats very inspiring looks like there will be 2 broke college students driving the z pretty soon
As a 52 year old, (who owned a ‘69 & ‘72 TR6, a ‘67 MGBGT-cars that were killed by Datsun’s 240Z as well as Triumph’s GT6/Stag & who has driven a 240, 260, & 280 Zs, Porsche 911, HiPo Honda Civic Si, Mazda RX7, & other, more forgettable sports cars all before breaking my neck skiing), who hasn’t driven anything but a wheelchair for about 3 decades, I sure enjoyed this video & all of the interesting comments. Thanks very much🙏🏼.
I would love to hear this in person
Still monkeying around with this car and loving it! Hello there 1M views, kinda cool! 👌

good man, thanks!
Where can I get that jacket
Dave Scholz thanks for sharing Dave, based in this and my neighbor growing up having one, I just bought an '85 300Z
I had a Rebello powered '74.5 260Z as my daily driver from 1987-1993. Widened, lowered, well over 300 HP, and insanely fun to drive. I come back to this youtube video from time to time to wax nostalgic and remember when all I had to do was walk out to the driveway if I wanted to hear this sound. The owner in the video's description of the lag below 5000 rpm is spot on, the backfire and flame throwing is also accurate. Irrespective of the sound, the thing I miss the most is getting in, turning the key and driving off in the morning. Even if work sucked, driving that car was a daily pleasure that I never took for granted. I lived in a condo complex and would get notes on my windshield from time to time from my neighbors who didn't appreciate their 5:30 am wakeup every weekday. Funny, none of them ever complained to me in person on Saturday or Sunday. I wonder why? For some reason, I have no pictures of the car, so all I have left are the memories, this video and the license plate I am looking at: Virginia - 1 QuickZ.
I'd be quite thrilled to be woken up every morning at 530 by this sound.
I remember messaging Dave on Instagram back in 2014 after buying my first 280z. We kept up here and there on social media. Years later on a whim, I told him I’d be making a road trip out to so-cal with a dear friend of mine. On a perfect summer day in 2019 we drove up his driveway and he met us with a couple of cold Lacroixs and showed us his Z. To make it even better he offered to take me on a spin around the block. He ended up pulling off and tossing me the keys to drive it back. I reminisce now back to that day. Dave is such a cool guy and yes - the emotions you feel watching this video are 10x more enhanced experiencing it in person. One of my favorite memories.
This car.
Sounds.
So.
Damn.
GOOD
niceprince that the first thing I liked about it ! Thing sounds beast!
15 years ago i fell in love with the early Zs. Few years after that i found this video and of those 1. something million views i bet its my fault for around 300k of those. Today FINALLY i bought one. Never saw one live until today, just pictures on google and this video mainly, honestly the car needs some stuff. Bumpers, exhaust are the main thing but i will get it sorted. I just wanted to share my hapiness with everyone and to whoever is like me 10-15 years ago, dreaming of owning one, keep working on it, one day you will have one! Dont give up!
Back for my monthly view
+mzondi1970 zdream real dream car
Yeah, same here.
+mzondi1970 back again lol
It's like a ritual
bi-daily ;)
I watched this video every year.. never have been so in love with a car.. now a proud owner of a 1978 280z. Thank you for the inspiration!
I recall watching this video about 10 times over and telling myself that one day I'd have one. After years of saving up, I finally acquired a 1977 Datsun 280z :). Thank you petrolicious. Thank you Datsun.
Same dream here. Now own a '78 280z! Congrats!
Sometimes I get tired of wrenching on my '72, then I come here to watch / hear that 3.0 Rebello scream... all good to go again. That is all.
Ken S Holly shit! Me too, I wrench my 73. Just dropped in a 79 280zx 5 speed tranny.
Dude same, Iv'e got a '72 as well and as you know there is always something you've got to do for her. But at the end of the day when you're behind the wheel of any Z, your'e in for the ride of your life!
How much for the setup
There is nothing like an old sportscar. It truly makes someone alive when they drive one with the smell of petrol, the looks of the car, the feel of its handling and speed, and the noise. Whether it is a muscle car, an old japanese or european sports car, these type of cars are timeless.
I come here to get inspiration to finish my 1971 240z. I’m almost there. Hopefully this will be the year.
3:43 OMG... THAT SOUND!!!
Perfection. It's quite literally perfect. I love everything about the way he has it done. Beautiful 240.
My favourite car of all time
That exhaust sound is perfect...one of the best vintage 6 cylinder sounds I`ve ever heard!!! Amazing car dude!!!
3:43 my favorite sound track
Gabriel Rosales I got asmr from the lol
Love this video, love hearing other car guys talk about their loves. I recently bought a '72 240 from a tow yard for next to nothing, not running, all original. Put in fresh gas, messed with the points, and she fired right up, burned tires through all 4 gears. Got her up to 90 mph and she kept pulling. What a great car.
I watched this video when it camed out, I still come back to it, dreaming of owning one someday, absolute dream of a car. And godamn, it sounds so good!
My great aunt used to do costume design in Hollywood back in the '60s & 70's.
Back when they came out she had a choice between the 240Z and a Porsche. She chose the 240Z (It's not what I would have done, but It's not like either is a bad choice ). Pushing 100 years old and she still raves about it. To this day, whenever I visit the first things she wants to know ishow my car (280Z) is doing.
Not many cars these days inspire that level of passion.
BEST EPISODE EVER !!!!! The 240 Z is the best Z of all time & that noise is phenomenal :)
Petrolicious may have stopped making videos, but I haven't stopped coming back to this..
Probably watched this 100 or more times over the years. Can we get a follow up, “where they are now” with Dave and that amazing Z?
I still credit this video with raising the price of Zs, I have a 71' and I feel like things really blew up after this. Before this video I had no seen prices move much and never really heard people hunting for them. And I'm sure Rebello must have doubled it's business at the very least.
The most beautiful Z car ever made. Period.
I learned to drive a stick sneaking my dad's 73 out. It was so loud and that straight 6 had such a distinctive sound I didn't dare start it in the garage and wake up my dad. Fortunately, it was so light I could easily push it out of the garage - after disconnecting the garage door opener and opening the door slowly by hand. My folks had the perfect driveway for this clandestine activity. I could roll back into the street, that had a slight downhill slope. With a little push, I could jump in, let it roll a couple blocks down the hill, and then pop the clutch to start it. After driving around the neighborhood a while, I would kill the ignition a couple blocks up and coast into the driveway and the garage with the lights off. I never got caught.
The car is gathering dust at my brother-in-law's a couple of miles away from my folks' (now my mom's) house. I hope he restores it one day. If I hadn't moved overseas I would have fought him for it and restored it myself.
that N/A 6 cylinder sound!!!
eargasm
One of the best by Petrolicious ✌😎
0:13 & 3:46 I got goosebumps here, no joke. This is the kinda guy I'd have a beer with, mad respect.
I've been coming back to this video periodically throughout the years. It's what made me a car enthusiast the first time I watched it at 13, and it gives me the same feelings of awe and inspiration now, 8 years later. I look forward to many more years of watching this, and hopefully one day I'll have my own Z.
Nissan needs to build these again.
FR-S is the closest thing to it you can drive. Its practically a modernized carbon copy of the S30
Not till I can get a 76! Then remake them. Because they will Rocket up in value. Need to purchase mine cheap. And never let go of it.
FRS will never sound like this...
Its a Z. It would be like saying "I wish they sill made corvettes". They do, its just not the same car and for a lot of good reasons. The 370z really is some of the best bang for the buck you can get today. 330 - 350 hp right from the factory out of a naturally aspirated v6 with a warranty. Not to mention better engineered for handling and the like. But good news, if you really must have a classic fairlady...you can buy them all day on craigslist. I just don't know why a car company HAS to build the same car unchanged for decades. Then it becomes nothing more then a beetle or ford focus. When everyone has that car, it doesn't really stand out. Also, that is terrible when it is suppose to be a competitive sports car.
leftcoaster67 ... I do agree ! Very very good idea ! (I had 3 amazing sporty Nissan and Datsun yet ,I have kept the 6 on line one (Skyline), now ready to buy a 240z with 0 kilometers ,carbu if possible And 6 on line of course, around 1200 kg max for the closest body replica ,atmo ...or turbo (why not) ,and please... No electronics Gremlins inside !!!) . And about the price I have an idea myself : Ask to some economist to calculate the actual price from the 1970 price (1,08 x 29600 Francs = 31968 Euros (Dollars)) ,easy to do ,and it will be a doble marketing world blast ! The best global advertising a car manufacturer could imagine ; And Nissan is The manufacturer able to do that if it exist one ! (Nissan Directors ,call me I can do all the marketing plan if you make the car ).
Absolutely stunning! This car is just loaded with style and character.
Video brought a tear to my eye. This was my first car. I loved it. Yours is so awesome and the sound is magical. I would love to just sit in it and feel 18 again.
This is my favorite Petrolicious video so far. I have watched many of them more than once but, I keep coming back to this one. Great video, such a cool car...that exhaust and engine sound are amazing! Congrats on your cool 240Z!
the exhaust sound gives me chills
I watch this video every other day, not many cars can be this aggressive sounding but at the same time satisfyingly so! You can imagine the smells exactly and the sound of it on cam, such a good build. I feel inspired to get my own project finished (not that they ever are).
Well some nearly three years after first watching this video I've finally done it. I've just purchased my very own Series One Datsun 240z in the USA. Waiting to sort out the minor details before bringing it back to Britain to let the fun begin. I'm sure there will be a long road ahead, however thank you Petrolicious, you've inspired another young petrolhead who's now got a proper classic! Also thanks Dave, your car is awesome and has been an inspiration :-D
Bought mine in the US back in 08 - its now over here in the UK
@@SAXONWARLORD1000AD Nice, where in the UK are you? You don't see many around...
I bought my dads 240z, 30 years ago for $1200,dad is gone but the cars still sits, proudly in my garage.
I came upon this video 2 years ago and it inspired me to buy a 240z. I m so glad i watched the video. The 240z is so much fun to drive and to have.
I want to restore one someday. Beautiful car, great work.
Goosebumps @ 3.46 ... that sound
People kill for parking spots at my university, whenever I take my 76 280z, people literally wave to me and surrender the parking space that they worked hard to find. Respect.
sure they do
I love every single on of these videos because just simply the stories and the cinematography is just simply unbeatable; keep up the great work lads!
This is what a like about old sports cars. They have this special thing that normal cars of today dont have.
I mean , its connected to you ..
I should prefer this above a Lamborghini or a Ferrari ..
Petrol Head if u have money million dollar lambo or Ferrari n old school abit cheap.mustang or camaro quite nice n cool.
you officially are a "Petrol Head"
Ok petrol head how about comparing to a "real" sportscar like say an Austin Healy 3000, Both 6 ycyl, both RWD The Healey gonna eat that Z for breakfast while being a generation older. Get real a 240Z is roughly comparable to a 1953 MG.
seen this vid like 40 times and everytime i watch that opening i smile...
Sounds better than anything available in the market right now. That sound is simply love
Been coming back here every few months for the last 8 years!
Love the video! Love the car! The design was refined from others to perfection, like the samurai sword becoming its own unique beauty.
Wanted a z since high school 2003, saw this video when it came out, now I’ve got one and am enjoying decking it out!
This thing sounds incredible.
Some retired factory workers or designers are watching these videos and so glad that their work is still being respected by their children's peers.
I’m good friends with Dave and he still has this Z in his possession. My true inspiration is this video to get my 240Z done one day
Does he have an Instagram I could follow the car at?
I've lost count how many times I've come back here to watch this video. Simply stunning....
Amazing. My 280Z gets a story from everyone over 40. I never understand some of them, about 1/3 have wrapped the car around a tree, pole, etc. The car is so driver friendly, to me, the harder you drive it. The sweeter it gets.
Brad Riley same with my 280zx
My dad had one back in the early 80's , I didn't even know off, but by chance I found a picture of a 240z and really liked it, now I have my own 1971 240Z ( series 2 ) that I restored to original, and I am using it in the summer and on weekends. I love it. Gr from The Netherlands.
I had a '71 240z back in college. At the time I bought it the car was ~11 years old. Unfortunately, it was from the rust belt, so some rather nasty rust spots started showing up not long after I bought her. Regardless of that, it was a great driving little car! I raced it in a bunch of SCCA solo events. I'd love to have a fully restored one some day (with A/C). Well, now I'm driving a '94 RX7. In a way, it's has a lot of character that the 240z does, but it's got a lot more power and you almost never seen and they are pretty darn rare these days.
1 million views! Congrats to petrolicious and Dave for the video that has inspired many!
1:46 I hope he repaired that front-bumper. that thing is all over the place.
It looks like it's missing a bolt on that corner.
I can't tell you how many times I've watched this video now. It's done so well! Can't wait to start working on the '72 240z I just bought!
Great video. I am a very seasoned Porsche builder from the 80-90s and mercedes guy. I am laughing while watching your video because I just acquired an 82 280zx. Not really the classic but my first z. I had never paid attention to these rice rockets until now. Today I am eyeing a total ratsun 240z 1-1971 production sitting and rotting in an avocado grove in San Diego. Its 99.9990 complete and green. I will see what happens. I plan to de-rat it and see what's up with a semi stock looking Rat-Rod. It has a lot of rust but the dam car is calling to me. Thank you for the inspiration video.

Maybe the 20th or 30th time I'm seeing this video.
I discovered the Datsun 240z when I was 16 years old and I felt directly in love... that kind of love which never let you.
I'm actually 29 years old and I know I will cry really soon..... because 11 years after, I'm waiting for my first love, coming from California for my native south of France.
car's love is a strange and awesome think :)
Thanks for your video, mine will be exactly like yours..... Can't wait !!!!!
lucky guy. I like and understand his love for his car.
Nice video, I love background stories on how people get these classic rides back into shape like they came out of the dealership just yesterday.
240Z > all other Z's..
Zzzzz for the other Z's
Agreed. I had a '72... My brother had a '75. Another guy in my hometown had a '73 with a L28 block with L24 head. That Z could hook up!
@@michaelmurray8295 Is it turbo?
From one S30Z owner to another - Great video. Makes me miss driving mine. Hurry up summer.
You could start doing a "revisited" series where you revisit people who starred in a Petrolicious film 5 or more years ago. It always sounds like they're not standing still, constantly evolving their skills & collection. Just an idea I thought I'd share!
Great idea!
This channel has some of the best content on the internet.
Not long ago saw a beautifully restored white Z smashed to shit in downtown SF. The other car was a junky Volvo 240 GL.
The owner walked away, but the Z is beyond recognition. A damn shame.
Ultra80s volvo 240aint bad lmao
Rarely do I find videos on youtube that I come back to on a regular basis, but this video just keeps showing up on my recommended list and I can't help myself from watching this video again and again. I can't wait to buy my z.
I had no idea these could sound so mean and nasty. OK, I'm in on these, haha. What a nice build. This is one of my favorite Petrolicious productions, as it has inspired pure automobile lust.
This is outstanding. About a week or so ago, I found a picture of this car online. Made it my desktop at work, across all 3 screens. Always wondered what it sounded like, pictured it driving. Then I found this.
The designer passed away.
This state of art will remain forever.
Power, Passion, Mechanical Music, and History. Thanks for sharing!
better looking than an E-type to my eye
kleinbottled79 I completely agree with you.
Just bought a '76 Datsun 280z, and it is unbelievable to look at a car and smile so much. Doesn't even run! That's when you know you found you're perfect car, to where it can be the most run down, rusted, dilapidated example of it and it can still make you smile.
i love the datsun's and when i tell someone that i love datsun's then they look at me like what the fuck is a datsun:(
you're hanging out with the wrong people.
true they are not car people and they cost money!
+max vloger i feel ya! same here man :/
I've got a '66 Datsun roadster that I love. Still want a 240, though.
This video brings back memories. I was introduced to Petrolicious and subscribed on this video.
It feels like the 370 will never be "THAT" car compared to a 240z.
the 370z can’t compare to the 240z if it can’t even compare to the 350z
Of course not.i have a 280zx i think style of this cars is just beautiful.but after this they dont look good.my opinion

Oh ok
man after watching your channel 5yrs ago i felt in love with the z i went out and got me a 72 240z the same color it run amazing i have it for 2 years but something came up i have to gave it up for dirt cheap i’m still regretting but now i’m back and still have the feeling for the game i got myself a 75 model yrs but that is ok it a good car loving it
I could have had a late 69 240 if I'd been more forward when I was in high school, never had the balls to cross my old man by buying something for myself though. still regret it.
That would be a seriously valuable car today if it was kept out of the rain. Your dad would have eventually would have become proud of your smart investing acumen.
Came back to rewatch and I still have my 1973 240z that I bought after being inspired by this video
where can i get a jacket like that?
lolol I was thinking the same thing
Never gets old, forever love Z cars (I’ll spare you the stories, lol) 😍
If I met you I'd want to tell you my 240Z stories, but there are too many...and they're all nuts. My interest in cars was ignited by the 240Z and led me into a 74 Triumph TR-6, a 74 Porsche 911S and finally a V12 95 Ferrari 456GT
LOVE your collection. Especially the 74 911 S and the Triumph TR6! The TR6's are so cool and very easy to add a hell of alot of power to. I'm currently just getting started at 32! Got an '06 Porsche 997 Carrera 2S with a very rare spec and low miles (got it with 27k miles last September!). Also got a late 2017 BMW F80 M3 Competition. Looking for a Ferrari now. My other half wants says it HAS to be a Ferrari lol. So it's looking for the right one. I like the 550M/575M. Still quite affordable. In an ideal world it'd be a 360 Challenge Stradale. But there's no sound as glorious as a Ferrari V12 at high revs; other than an air cooled tuned flat six wailing at 7,000RPM of course! Plus the 911S will offer the most rewarding/challenging driving experience.
Just popping back to watch this again, car, look, sound is awesome...
