Using the Test All Valves feature on a sprinkler timer

  • Step by step instructions for using the Test All Valves feature on a lawn sprinkler controller.
    Test All Valves is a feature on newer timers that allows you to test all of the stations on a sprinkler system in sequence regardless of what program they are on in one step. Note: Only valves/stations with non-zero watering times will run with this feature. Test default run time in minutes for the valves can changed to any number desired before running the test.
    In this video I demonstrate the Test All Valves feature using a Rain Bird ESP Series 4MI indoor modular controller.

    My Rainbird system stopped working for 3 zones recently. When I tried to test the watering time on for those zones, it says "No Mode 1". What does it mean? Do you have any tips on troubleshooting this issue?

    • @Iscaper
      @Iscaper  5 років тому +1

      Sounds like you may have a bad module. Try removing the wire from the station 1 terminal, then take one of timer wires out of the module (station 5, 6, or 7) and connect it to the station 1 terminal. Hit the manual start button and see if station 1 waters. If it does I would replace the module.

    I love all your videos! I noticed on my RB ESP Test all valves when I select the Manual Start button it goes right into testing the valves. I get no "Valves Active" message. Nor do I have to set the dial to auto. It just goes. Is that normal? I have the same controller.

    • @Iscaper
      @Iscaper  3 роки тому +3

      Yes. Here's the instructions from the manual:
      The ESP Modular controller has a built-in test program. This program automatically runs each valve that has a non-zero watering time assigned to it.
      1. Turn the dial to “TEST ALL VALVES.”
      2. The display shows “TEST” and the default run time of 2 minutes.
      3. To change the default run time, press Up or Down arrow .
      4. Press “MANUAL START / ADVANCE” to begin running the test program. Then turn the dial to AUTO.
      5. While the test program is running, the display shows the valve number currently operating, along with its remaining run time.
      6. The controller will run each valve in numerical sequence and then return to AUTO mode to await the next scheduled start time. Any valve that has been set to a 0 run time will be skipped during the test program.
      7. To advance through the valves faster, press “MANUAL START / ADVANCE.”
      8. To cancel the test program, turn the dial to OFF for three seconds. Then turn the dial back to AUTO.

    I am trying to find a leak in our system because the water is running at low rate continuously even when rainbird system (same you’ve shown) is off. I had to turn off the water at the main valve, because even with the rainbird switched to OFF, the water meter was slowly moving showing usage. No visible water present or super soppy area in the zones that I could find. I’m thinking a valve is not closing entirely? Maybe solenoid stuck or debris? Any thoughts?

    • @Iscaper
      @Iscaper  Рік тому

      I think you're right, it sounds like a seeping valve. If you pull off the valve box lid and listen closely, you should be able to hear a valve if it is seeping. Another possibility is a leak in the supply line or the valve manifold.

    I have the same controller and when I test voltages, I'm getting voltages (27-29v) on all zone wires. I am running it manually and it doesn't matter which zone I advance to, there is still voltages on all 7 zone wires at once. Bad controller?

    • @Iscaper
      @Iscaper  5 років тому

      When you check voltage, you should have the black probe on the common terminal, and the red probe on the station that is running. If you take the red probe and test other station terminals other than the station that is running, you should show no voltage on the multi-tester. If it shows voltage you may have a problem with the controller.

Everything was working last year when he turned everything off and when I tested it today that's what I got. Voltage on all 7 zones at once. Thanks for the reply!

      Trying using manual start. Just press manual start to water station 1, press again for station 2, and so on. If you get the error message on the display when doing this there is a problem with that valve.

    I tested all valves doing this and now it won't turn off.. I unplugged the AC, and turned off the main water line.. waited a for 2 hours and turn on main water line, plugged back in the AC. all valves stay open now that are all stuck open

      That doesn't make any sense. As soon as power is removed from a valve it should shut off. Were the valves off before you ran the "test all valves"? Have you checked that the solenoids on the valves are in the off position?

    Test all valves function works but when I set a timer for the sprinklers to turn on auto they don’t turn on? What’s the issue?

    • @Iscaper
      @Iscaper  Рік тому

      When you turn the dial to Auto, the timer won't water until the next start time. If you're on program A make sure you have a start time, days you want to water turned on, and run times on the valves you want to water on program A. Turn dial to Auto and press manual start. The timer should water through those valves.

      @@miranda2789 Looks like you'll need to do some troubleshooting to isolate the problem.
      1. Check that you can manually open a valve and it waters.
      2. At the time take a multi-tester and check that each station/valve is getting 24-29 AC volts.

      Turn the dial to OFF for 3 seconds then turn back to AUTO. Skip the test valves feature and just push Manual Start/Advance. This will start the Station 1. If you want to check the other stations simply push Manual Start/Advance again to go to the next station. I use this feature instead of the Test All Valves.

      iScaper1 that is the process I went through but no valves came on. When I did my neighbors, once I pressed the manual start, it said something like ‘test in progress’ and when I went to auto, they turned on. Mine never says test in progress after I push the manual start and when I go to auto, it goes through the cycle, but none of the sprinklers ever turn on. When I go back to test all valves, the timer just blinks. It is not showing any alarms.
