- Today we look at what chameleon to get for your first chameleon. I explore the things you should think about and compare the three most common species: the Veiled Chameleon, Panther Chameleon, and Jackson’s Chameleon.
I have just launched a Chameleon Academy line of enclosures specifically for giving your chameleon the best home. Check them out here

"Want to make your chameleon happy? Walk by his cage and pretend you didn't notice him". Reptile comedy gold right there.
While it is true that reptile comedy is in its infancy, it has to start somewhere!
Þ
So true! 😂
Hilarious
"We are not owners, but care takers." Wonderfully put!
That's exactly how I feel with my pets. More like a steward and/or family member
Love this!
And it's wrong. I'm not a "pet parent" or other such nonsense. You are the owner, that is simply a fact. Check your local law if you are in doubt. No amount of touchy feely thinking with your heart and not your head will change it.
@@mikefranklin70 you should behave like a caretaker though
Elizabeth Ochoa we’re the fathers. We take care of them and nurture them. I’m a parent!
“They were born being fed by hairless apes” that... is the best part
:)
Heyyy! I have hair 😠

“We’re not owners, we’re caretakers” that’s what has to stick in your head when considering getting a pet
I am currently undertaking an animal management course at college and for the last week i had been listening to a podcast series about chameleons for my animal training subject. Today i watched this video and then went back to the podcasts only to realise you are the one who made the podcasts. Thank you so much for literally every video and podcast because they are helping with my studies so much.
Thank you so much for letting me know the podcasts and video has been useful! I am now working on more videos to keep that streak going!
Jackson’s chameleons are my absolute favorite. I was first interested in Panthers for their gorgeous colors, but I decided they weren’t for me. And then at a reptile expo, a vendor was selling Jackson’s chameleons. I was immediately in love. That vivid green was mesmerizing. I bought a male the next day. He’s been an absolute angel.
Amelia Reid they are my favorite as well!
TThey are my favorite from all chams
@@ChameleonAcademy Jackson's chameleon because of flick
Same I love them they usually don’t change colors much or mine doesn’t but it loves to hide but it tries to sneak up on me sometimes I act like I loose him and let him climb on me I never grab I let him choose if he wants to come up on me he is an amazing companion
Hands down the best video on cham choices. Very informative.
Mike M_VB Thank you very much!
I'm very impressed with how well this video was made. The information is great for a beginner. Kudos.
This guy is a real teacher and this has to be the must informative video I have seen on UA-cam
Thank you very much!
A chameleon seems to be the socialphobia-type of reptile, nice. We have something in common xD
Konan Kami same here.
I didn’t know chameleons we’re supposed to be that skinny.
Abigail Thompson it is amazing how chameleons are mostly air! And when they want to they suck it all in and hide behind branches! Although they seem to have large shapes they need to be healthy to really be a chameleon. Too much weight in them and they are challenged to move and live like a chameleon should.
Admittedly, I tend to overfeed my animals because it's so fun to watch them eat. Maybe other people are that way too.
@@duybear4023 Its not healthy to do that, even if fun to watch, you can kill them by overfeeding.
I got my first chameleon, a 10 month old veiled male a couple weeks ago. His first family was moving and their new landlord found out they had a chameleon (he didn't care about their dog or cat), he told them they couldn't bring him. The family had listed him for free for over three weeks, but they live in a rural area so they had no takers. When we contacted the family they were so grateful that we agreed to keep in contact with them they gave us EVERYTHING they had for him (including a temp gun). I did upgrade his UVB and added more enrichment items to his enclosure, but she had most everything covered. We named him Jupiter, he's my pissy boy, but that attitude just endears me to him even more! He's been an amazing addition to our family! I feel so fortunate to have him in our lives! I hope to give him long, happy life with us!
Tara Bytez I am very glad that there was a happy ending to this story! I remember when I had to rehome a couple chameleons and having a good home for them to go to meant everything!
Hope he has an amazing life and I hope your chameleon has a good long life
My Rex is about 2 years old and I adopted him about 7 months ago.
He has gained weight and his tail looks better than when I got him.
Always vary the food a bit and do buy calcium powder.

I've seriously thought about getting a chameleon or other reptile lately. I kept a female veiled chameleon a couple of years ago and I loved her so much. She was one of those rare veiled chameleons that were extremely friendly and It at least felt like she bonded with me super well. She just exploded into blue and colorful greens whenever she saw me and she loved to sit on me and with me as I did schoolwork.
She was the sweetest and I loved her so much.
Just seeing videos like this where the chameleon is climbing around on sticks and branches just fills me with pure joy and nostalgia, it reminds me of her so much.
I miss you a lot Molly
Welcome to the channel! I have a lot about chameleons and there is nothing wrong with casually getting up to speed on the latest in husbandry discoveries (there have been a lot - especially with Veileds) while waiting for the perfect window of opportunity to jump back in again. I am glad this was able to bring back some good memories!
Excellent excellent excellent video ! I'm into reptiles keeping for 10+yrs and I never ever found such a serious and explanatory video as this one !
Your dedication in putting on so much precise and helpful info is astounding. I THANK YOU VERY MUCH. As an experienced keeper myself I still learned much things here. Your video should be a "sticky" on YT ! lol.
Now i'm going to move on to the other vids you provide. You made a new subscriber out of me !
Keep on the excellent work ! Greetings from Belgium.
I have never had a chameleon before I have started doing research and wanted to speaker with an experienced owner to assist with more info.
@@nikayllaaugustinos7678 Hi ! I think if you listen to the numerous podcasts recorded by Bill, you would be blessed with tons of invaluable info about those little critters. I never found anything even remotely close to that quality of torough information... so my only advise would be : listen to them, it's just amazing ! Best of luck!
Reno D I just wanted to thank you for sharing your appreciation and helping out Nikaylla. Feedback from an experienced reptile keeper like you carries a lot of weight!
@@ChameleonAcademy My pleasure ! Thank you for the kind words. You make a wonderful work !

I would like to see more content. Perhaps a tour of your indoor and outdoor enclosures or just a GoPro of your routine.
I have a veiled chameleon for my own. He loves sleeping on my shoulder and won't go away so it's really hard to make him sleep in his terrarium :b he's 8 months old ^^ and his name is Fluffy (dont ask)
Exactly adorable❤❤❤❤❤😍
Aawwwwwwee I understand cuz like there feet feel like some type of fur not scales, but my Cham hates me😞
Sorry for replying after 1 year, but your comment gave me some hope! I've been watching tons of videos regarding chameleons because I have the chance to buy a veiled chameleon, but in every video they say this kind is super fisty and grumpy, and I was close to giving up. Wish you and Fluffy a nice day!
@@tomasgomes8793 Thank you! Ofcourse Fluffy also has his grumpy times but it can get better! Read their body language, don't touch them if they back away, feed them from your hand, give it space and a big home. Those things will make it trust you eventually.
I would recommend getting a 4months old chameleon to raise it from the start and let it get used to you.
have a nice day as well!
What in the world did i just watch!!!??? I had never seen such a well put explanatory video on chameleon education!! You went through everything, congrats!
My first ever chameleon was a Jackson’s, and they’ll forever be my favorite species. I have three Veileds currently, one of them is a piebald. They’re my favorite reptile, but they aren’t for everyone.
This was great! Thanks! If I ever get one, I think the one for me is the female panther chameleon. The one you showed was beautiful! Thanks for spreading that attitude about cage size, them being living beings deserving of care and respect, and that we are caregivers of our pets - everyone should be that way.
This seriously helped me. I have not heard of some of these crucial tips from anyone else; I now have a better understanding on chameleons and I cannot thank you enough.
I purchased my first juvenile vailed Cham and I would love a long lesson and lots of advice from this guy. Very experienced and informative!
This video helped me a lot on my decision on getting a chameleon😁👍

Thank you for a very informative look at chameleons as pets.
I saw a veiled chameleon in a pet store today, and, of course have seen videos where they appear to be enjoying their human interactions.
A big thank you for clearing that up! After watching your video, I decided I'd be miserable with a pet who didn't "like" my attempts at companionship. You saved a chameleon from a miserable life! Your honesty is appreciated.
This is one of the best comments I could get! Finding a pet that matches our needs and expectations is critical to a happy life together! For example, as much as I adore cockatoos, I could never provide the emotional needs they have. They is nothing wrong with me or with cockatoos - we just aren’t a match! I am very happy you were able to learn this before getting the pet!
@@ChameleonAcademy It really is a wonderful video! I'll probably visit again just so I can enjoy seeing you with your friends. :)
I just want to say I appreciate everything you do for the chameleon community. I bought one of your enclosures and now I’m just filling it in with plants so I can put my panther in. He’s going to love it.
nuclearpeacex I am very glad that this outreach has brought value to both you and your panther chameleon!
Wonderful presentation!! Thank You so much! I'm very happy to comment that I learned a lot today. I currently care for 2 Veiled Chameleons, both rehomed to me at about 2.5 years old. I am looking forward to obtaining my first Panther baby. I'm also looking into the Pygmy and Parsons Chameleons! I find that the Chameleons have interesting behaviors, personalities. Very conducive to meditation which is a big plus for my husband and I! I really do Thank You!
Thank you for such a well put, and informational video, earned a thumbs up and sub

I found this a very informative video
Thank you for saying the truth! I loved how you talked about expectation of the animal☺️
Loved this video. Very informative for newbies.
My first cham was a triceros quadricornis female that I stumbled upon in the pet section at a hardware store in Germany many yrs ago. I had her for about 9yrs before she died. She laid a few infertile clutches...she started crawling around on the floor and I placed buckets with dirt all around(she was somewhat free range) and she picked a bucket, laid and moved on.
Thanks for the vid, totally cool.
Hey there I love your videos.
Very informative, i do appreciate your effort.
I have just bought a veiled cham.
I've had an interest with chameleons since I was just a kid. They are very fascinating creatures. They remind me that the creator is the the most awesome and mysterious giver of life to have made suck a creature.
I've got 2 species of chameleon.
I've got a beautiful common Mediterranean chameleon. Very even temperament easy to handle and can be trusted.
Also have a male veiled. The polar opposite of what i said in the above..
But stunning to look at.
Great information here and I'd look forward to more videos. Thanks chameleon academy!! 🙂
Wow excellent video. I felt like I was in a class. Thank you for this! I've been wanting a chameleon for awhile now. I love the Panther Chameleon.
This is super helpful. I appreciate an honest take on their behaviors and will probably seek another pet. Thanks for the info!

This showed up on my feed randomly and very pleasant to watch. Very cool to learn about chameleons.
I am glad you enjoyed the video!
Absolutely amazing I am learning very much as I go and this video is such an extension of my knowledge, thank you!
Person I am very glad you found it useful!
Excellent video. I have two Veiled males and the older Ziggy is so friendly and hates being in his vivarium and literally runs out onto your arm when you open it. He can still be a grumpy guy though. My younger boy Frodo is a more shy and prefers to be left alone.
Yep, each chameleon has their own personality!
This video helped me decide which species was perfect to start with and when i actually went to the Reptile Store, I felt educated enough to purchase all the things my new Veiled needed! He seems to be acclimating quite well to his new enclosure but I'm still worried about his temperature and light schedule. can we get a video about proper lighting and how long to keep the lights on etc. ? Love this channel and I just started listening to the podcast as well!
James Stout a proper lighting video is in the works! I am very glad to hear that this video helped so much!
The video is really nice! I enjoyed watching it and learning new stuff about chameleons
Amazing video Bill, I really appreciate the message you give out in the video; husbandry and pet keeping wise.
I'm not a chameleon guy but I enjoy watching your videos because of your keeping philosophy :)

Beautifully made video! Well organized and your voice is like Nat Geo quality! I enjoyed the video a lot that I watched it two more times and took notes. I am new at this and currently making the transition from aquariums (yes! Another expensive hobby). I was set on getting a veiled since the research plus what you video covers for being an “easy” species. Your video has me now thinking to get a panther cham. My plan is to set up the cage and foliage and let it get established. Once I am happy with the cage, I’ll pursue a male panther from a reputable breather. Again, great video and really learned a lot. Sub’d
I am very glad you enjoyed the video! And your strategy of setting everything up and letting it run a while before introducing your chameleon is perfect. That is just one of the habits learned from your aquarium years that will serve you well into your chameleon years!
What I get from your presentation with the ivy is that something like a standard greenhouse size would be appropriate for a chameleon. This makes sense from an enrichment perspective, as it gives them a lot of different foliage and vertical space to inhabit. Makes me think that if I want to have a chameleon as a pet, I should probably move to a climate more amenable to their natural needs.
Edit: I suspect that having an enclosure and accompanying foliage that are above a human height will help establish comfortability in the chamelon.
Excellent video for newbies, thank you for your time.
I am glad you found it effective!
You're Killin it Bill, thank you for the top notch chameleon info as always man! My first cham is a male veiled I reluctantly purchased from Petco and two months later ordered a male panther from KK. Both are growing like weeds!

We were gifted Cami for Christmas. She is a veiled chameleon. I really thought I would absolutely hate having a reptile in my house and I couldn't have been more wrong I absolutely love her!!!
She was meant to be for my sons but I feel me and her get along very well as she won't go to them or with them but she comes out willingly to me. She will also let me hold her and walk around the house with her where she seems very uncomfortable with the children. Great video!! Thank you so much for the advice I will be looking for a bigger enclosure for her 😀
Also wanted to say Thank you for your very informative video. Look forward to learning more
Thank you for letting me know!
Hello from South Mississippi! I’m a second time chameleon care taker and both times I chose a veiled. I just love how they look with their big crests. I’d also like to thank you for putting it out there that the females shouldn’t be looked at as solely breeders and brought light to the fact that they aren’t as scary as everyone makes them out to be. Before I watched your video I was scared to death of the females because of people saying they get egg bound. And I love love love how you said we aren’t owners but car takers. Very nicely put. You’ve got a new subscriber here!
I am glad you enjoyed it!
Every time I hear all these reptile experts say you shouldn’t hold chameleons, I die a little inside
Marco Zamudio it would be wonderful if reptiles would be as close of companions as dogs and cats (or even just a little). But the best way to respect them is to acknowledge what they are and not try to change them. I do have to say, though, that letting go of everything I want them to be and opening myself up to learning about what they are has opened up a whole new world for exploring. They have an amazing world and I can’t see spending my time with them in any other way than figuring out the absolute best way to give them what they need to be as natural of a chameleon as they can. It has become a life long fascination!
Chameleon Breeder it has to be very rewarding knowing you have the abilities to keep your chameleons happy and healthy.
Would like a Kenyan Jackson’s if ever they’re available.
First time i see one of your videos. Congrats for this great work !
I am glad you found the channel!
Do you already have a chameleon, looking to get one, or just enjoying the interesting hobbies one can find here on UA-cam?
Very informative; straight to the point. Not a bunch of babel like so many other vids.
I recently got my first Veiled Chameleon. I was wondering how much I should feed my chameleon. He’s about 1.25 months old. I feed him about 6, 1/4 inch crickets once a day. Is this too much or too little? Thank you!
Feed him as much as he will eat until he is full grown (6-9 months) and then ease off to five food items every other day or even every third day. Obesity is a big problem in veiled chameleons so remember to ease off when adult size!
Hello! my name is audrey i am really wanting a chameleon but i have a big problem. i live in anchorage, alaska where tempuratures* arent the best and my house tempurature is kinda low and its very dry here although i do have a humidafier*. i am also 12 am i too young to own a chameleon should i wait? i am going to be vet when im older and i want animal experience. i want to work with reptiles. i own 2 dogs and a parakeet. is that a problem? what chameleon is best for alaska standards? if i get one and cant provide the temps for it and it dies am i a bad person? please answer if it is not a good idea to get one please let me know i dont want to make a chameleon suffer.
Audrey Groat a very active member of the chameleon community lives in Alaska. It is very challenging, but it can be done. The challenge is not just the chameleon, but making sure you have a constant supply of food! Low humidity can be taken care of by humidifiers and glass or solid side cages. Artificial lighting technology is to a point where even the long nights won’t be a problem. But it will definitely be expensive. Just how expensive depends on what kind of environmental conditions your house provides and you would be the best to know that. You might consider working with Pygmy chameleons as they are smaller and it is easier to create a total custom environment for them. You could do the same for the larger chameleons if you have the space and funds to do it on a larger scale. The pygmy chameleons might be a good first step to work out all the things you need to do to make it work. There are many things you will need to take care of to keep chameleons in Anchorage. It really will depend on how much of your time and money you want to devote to making it work. But it can be done!
I do recommend waiting thoughlas chameleons are hard to care for in some ways and it will limit your college search
You should care for more "easy" animal at first, like beardead dragon. I wanted chameleon but they are kinda hard to keep alive and happy. So I bough berdead dragon. I know they don't look like chameleon and they are not that charming but it's good for the start speccialy if this is your first reptile pet.
Thank God there are half a million views of this. Important info.
Thank you for your information. Very helpful.
I had my first chameleon when I was an army brat in Hawaii and it was a Jackson chameleon that my dad help raise and now that I am older I want to accompany one as well but I think I will go with a panther chameleon to start out because the females are beautiful.
