    Jesse you did a great job of explaining a concept unique to Okinawan karate!! I am a black belt in Isshinryu karate and was taught the principle back in 1974.It us easier to demonstrate than to explain!! You did a great job doing both! By the way thanks for being the karate need.You always have good insights and explanations of your studies.

    I did this kind of stuff when I trained in China to learn the roots of goju, white crane. This principle is one of the key components of Sanzhan their sanchin.

    Jesse I find this concept of Chinnkuchi similar to "follow through" cross in classic western boxing as executed and explained by Joe Louis. You even let your back leg to come near your front foot to pass all your body weighy exactly as Joe used to do.

    This is exactly the essence of Chinese martial arts.We call it zhengjing in Mandarin Chinese or Chengen in Cantonese, which means using full power of the whole body, with the flow of 'qi'.It is also emphasised by Bruce Lee under the name of 'inch punch'. Many styles for example white crane,Taichi,Xingyi and Bagua are using this wave like power and to practice the power, we actually imagine ourself like throwing a ball or be 'like a wave' and throw our all body mass. We also use stance practice with meditation and also slow motion exercises like yoga (we call it qigong)with intention to nurture the power.
    The linkage between Chinese kung fu,Okinawan and karate is demonstrated here.

    Thank you for great explanation! For a very long time I was puzzled feeling there is something missing (or rather wrong) in a way modern karate teaches strikes with hard kime. I lacks fluidity. In fact when I watched old clips of Gichin Funakoshi perfroming kata, I had impression he is not moving the way they teach today. His technique seems very powerful (as old man) but without this excessive tension we observe today. I never before heard about chinkuchi but you made me clear what I was looking for!

    Great Video! I can really relate to the terms you said like "atipa" (not sure if the spelling is correct) since I've been practicing okinawan karate. Chinkuchi means to flow where "atipa" comes in, while kime is focused power. Thanks and keep making videos for the karate community!

    In Chinese martial arts this is called fajin (or fajing). You must be supple/relaxed but not limp. Power is released without telegraphing or loading if done correctly. The whole body strikes goes into this.

      Any topics : As mentioned in your last video, I would like to hear something about IBUKI :)
      I think everyone got "his" kata. I think it´s called *Koshiki no kata* ^^? Mine is : *SANCHIN* and ibuki is a big part of it. I´m trying to "bring my sanchin to perfection" I do this kata every morning and every evening, countless times but still my ibuki feels "weird" ^^°
      So yes, that´s some topic :) philosophical input is always welcome too :D
      :3 I´m always amazed by your chinkuchi answers. They always hit like a train. BAM!

    Like this seen many wrestling style exercises for kettlebell. In Switzerland the cattle always had bells around their necks, when removed mud got stuck inside, it was discovered to be a good exercise tool. Russia seemed to be the first to pick up on this, everyone else to be slow on the uptake. Good to see it can be beneficial for striking and technics.

      The reason behind tucking thumb right under is so that the thumb knuckle joint does not get injured in contact sports or fighting, some people get a fear of injury to themselves whilst throwing a punch, also the quicker you open the fist after a punch the quicker it gets back in to speed mode.

    Your explanation of chinkuchi is important and right to the (or better one of the) point(s) here. And damn ... i LIKE IT A LOT, and i LIKE YOUR EXERCISE!. BOOM!
    The word "kime" i think is a little .... now well, lets say, it also focuses one point only. The suddenly "stop" through musclecontraction. In other words, the explanation reduces kime to special part of physical technic (the moment of impact). Ki can mean lot of things, such as "Power", "Energy" and sometimes even "spirit". "Me" could be understand as something like a tip/spike, something like this (right?). So Ki-me means (for me, of course) to bring "energy", "power" and spirit (represented by will, sense/awarenes, thoughs, also emotions) all together to "one point", releasing suddenly maximum striking power. Musclecontraction is only one part here. "Chinkuchi" is in my opinion a deeper explanation of a lot of factors to achieve a good, strong or lets say "real" "kime".
    Maybe the missconception of "stopping" is a result of modern sports karate, because punches and kicks have to stop right before real impact? Anyway if we have a look on "chinkuchi" (by cecking, what actually masters have to say about it) and all the little details and hints therein, and if we think a little deeper about the physical and philosophical ideas of "kime" - now there are a lot of points of contact here. I think, without the old uchinaguchi-words its not possible, to understand "kime" in its full potential. We (or maybe only I for myself) need the old terms to understand the basic principles of real karate a little better.

    I don't think that kime is just the contraction at the end of the movement. I don't remember where I heard this or read this but kime is considered as a way of decision. Meaning that it's more a spiritual state. Certainly there is something to see with the word itself. In any case, nice video as usual Jesse san

    Chinkuchi can only be achieved with properly utilized Gamaku. If you "sneeze" with your arms only, or even with some Koshi, you will not achieve the destructive power that the concept of Chinkuchi provides unless Gamaku is used to generate it.

    • @Silverhead111
      @Silverhead111 6 років тому

      muhammed sajjad
      No, because the punch should be coming from every muscle in the body, from the legs to the hips up to the hands. Your elbow and hand should be locked to prevent that

    • @senseisajjadbudokaimiddlee7296
      @senseisajjadbudokaimiddlee7296 6 років тому +1

      Imagine youbare throwing a stone I think you should need to strighten your hands while you are shooting. So your elbow will get the strain. So if you are using big stone how do you feel and where you will feel the pressure. And a punch you are throwing to forward and if you are using weight for punch you will get the strain on your elbow right?

    • @nyhyl
      @nyhyl 5 років тому

      The elbow should of course be locked when it reaches a certain degree of extension. But this only seems to be contradicting. The relaxation doesn't come from the elbow joint. It the whole body, your weight that is allowed to (slightly) follow through. It's about putting your weight into the punch, letting yourself sink into the punch in fast, controlled but also heavy, inert way. Just like you don't overly extend your elbow, your don't overly expose your whole posture. Relaxing into the punch doesn't mean to completely collapse into the direction your moving.

    A lot of us are forgetting this type of punching. I saw an Okinawan Master that said, "Karate is not a sport,
    and when you punch imagine you are breaking bones." You have to have this type of punching for you could save a life some day. (I'm going to have to try the "spring up push ups."
    They look like they would be fun! 😀 Back in the early 1980's, I went to a game place with my Sifu and I did a 6" palm strike to the punching machine. It registered 300 pounds. Is that good, average or weak for a strike? I never asked a lot of people for it would look like I was trying to brag. I'm just curious about it And U still am.
