Maybe Your Dreams Won't Come True (and That's Okay)
Вставка

- Disney has been telling us for decades that dreams do come true, but recently, a select few Disney/Pixar films such as Soul, Monster's U, and Tangled have asked the question: what if your dreams don't come true? Or, what if they do? What then?

9:42 can I ask what is your dream?
Loved this. I remember after Monsters U thinking "wait... his dream didn't come true but he found joy and fulfillment in something else. Woah..." and the same with the barber in Soul. He didn't get his dream, but he loves life as a hairdresser. Great video.
Oh man, should have included the bit about the barber! But thanks!
Soul was just a complete surprise I definitely did not expect that kind of a plot development but it was an excellent subversion. The idea of just enjoying life as it comes felt real. As a 20 something I always feel pressured about not having met certain expectations like "oh shouldn't you be doing this, having a house or something" and a lot of these goal/dream oriented movies kinda reinforce that idea and of course chasing and achieving dreams are great but Soul was one of the few times where I felt like a film or work of art was specifically speaking to me saying "it's okay, slowdown and just enjoy what you have right now, remember the memories that have built you up, torn you down, just enjoy existing" and that to me was more powerful than anything
Right? Honestly it was just what I needed.
Torn you down. I always thought those painful moments were a waist. Embarrassing even. But I can see so much beauty in it as well.
It’s so crazy my whole life I was told , “believe in your self, put the work in… and your dreams come true” and I am a first hander to say that was a bold face lie .. I spent countless years thousands of dollers on a dream and it never came true to the point I had given up now I’m so completely lost in life and contemplating suicide… and also traumatized idk if I want to dedicate time towards anything in my life any more because I might not succeed in that as well and wasted my whole existence
Hey, are u there?
How is your life going?

Damn that hit me hard
As someone who got really stressed following my dream. I can confirm that dreams don’t come true. It’s only luck. And I’m thinking about giving up.
I hope you are doing well.
@@yellowpete79 thank you. I am doing much better. Thank you so much.
It's stuff like this is one reason why I don't have the heart to watch Soul
Like it's showing me a what if, where I somehow achieved my dream and I still feel... Empty, purposeless, and so on...
Thanks for the shoutout to Monsters U. It kinda gets lumped in with the “Pixar Sequel” bunch and it often gets ignored but I think it’s highly underrated for its mature story
Totally! That ending really sets it apart
WOW! Is that what Soul is about? (I haven't seen it yet) That is absolutely incredible and apt. It's something I keep trying to impress upon my fast brain that's always dreaming about the future or ruminating on the past, seeking new adventures and new perfections, and then forgetting that right now I have what I dreamed about for so long, and that all I wanted to do back then was just sit in the moment I'm experiencing now. It's tough to do and keep in mind for me sometimes, but how amazing to have an illustrated reminder for this very same concept!
I'd highly recommend checking it out!
Wow... Just wow dude.
You never seem to disappoint.
Thank you!
Holy crap...I agree
@@Obiwone1234 Thanks!
I was so immersed in this video until you said “a delicious slice of pizza” as he eat pecan pie (😅 just kidding, that video was well written & entrancing). Hope you got a chance to see Wolfwalkers
Oh no, I totally saw that and that is it a Chicago style deep dish 😅 hoping to see it soon!
This was way more than I thought I’d get when I typed in “what if your dreams don’t come true” in the search bar … thanks for this video
My nephew Tyrone is angry over broken dreams he won't hear me...he hates Reality some people get lucky in life and he gets resentful..
That was inspiring
Needed that, thank you for your hard work

Beautiful, I needed this! Thanks so much for your work, subscribed!

This really made my day, thank you so much !!
Ben, you have outdone yourself this is an exceptional video and beautifully sewn together. Wow

Beautiful and well written! Another great video Ben!

I really needed to hear this today. Thank you so much Centre Row.... you’ve eased my heart after a rough day. 💖🙏
I'm so glad, thank you for the kind words!
I rewatched this video again and wow It made me tear up. I just love this movie so much and you described it perfectly. thank you.
As someone who's failed more times than I can count... I think you might be onto something. Thanks, bro.
Thanks!
Your scripts are the best. The way they match the visuals and vice versa is an ability which a few video essayists possess. Your videos hold the viewer's attention and they flow naturally. Nothing feels jarring. Nothing is overdone. Only Nerdwriter1 is the other youtuber which, according to me, has this ability. This skill is pretty under-rated but so crucial for the viewer's experience. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much!
I’ve been having a hard few days. But this made my heart warm. Thank you. ☺️
Thanks for watching!
I just survived a suicide attempt. Life's good man
Glad you're here ❤
That's true!!🙂
The movie “Soul” REALLY explained that!! And I'm starting to understand that in my life!
For me, I ALWAYS wanted to do something with drawing/painting. And I'm gifted in drawing & painting! But it actually turned out that I HAVE a gift in being SUPER motivated with powerful positive words!!😊❤️
So yes, we DON'T always get what we want in life! But, it's what our “soul” gave us to do in our life!😌
Some ppl aren’t built to enjoy the little things in life … the little things don’t necessarily satisfy everyone …. Just like big dreams don’t satisfy everyone … it really depends on you
Yeah u gained a new sub man, what a beautiful vid!:)
Thank you!!!
this is a serious rude awakening for many up-and-coming's. Was a tough pill for me to swallow 20yrs ago. But today? Sooo much worse, and each generation lazier and increased need of unearned gratification, which will not come. Good job on the cut here though: showing whats important; cause its all we're goona get - and it really is enough
Thanks!
the result of the expectations movies like this, tv shows, and movies instill is pretty deceptive. We are taught the underdog rises above all else, becomes the rockstar. Like the movie Carrie, I want to tear these things apart. People can end up very bitter. If you ask me life is full of ironies, when people get told they can't do x they automatically want to do x. A lot of people conform to expectations too. A lot to unpack, a lot to critique.
I'm bitter right now over broken dreams..
You are really good at making videos. I find them very entertaining.
I appreciate that!
Great as always! :)
Thanks!
Monsters U is a much better film than people say it is, and I think that's because it's lesson is a very mature one. I actually did a speaking engagement about this topic last year and used the film and Pixar as a whole for that talk. Glad to see you give it some love. It's not Pixar's best, but I'll stand by that film!
Right? Very underrated
An excellent video on an excellent movie! I do feel like in some ways the movie bit off more it could chew - it seemed to skim over things like the details of souls before earth and the fine line between being 'in the zone' and being a lost soul, but it still did a great job for what it did!
Thanks!
Once again, you are the most underrated youtube channel ever.
I appreciate it
So good. Thank you for this 🙏
Thanks for watching!
Watching Soul reminded me of a short story "Easy Living" by Richard Lupoff. Maybe anyone here wants to check it out.
i needed that movie that message to my life in this time and your video is awesome nice work
Thanks!
Man, this video is beautiful 👏
Thank you!
Brilliant, as always.
Thank you!
@@CenterRow keep up the great work man.
The other thing worth acknowledging is that as we grow up the dreams we had are told to us to be childish and naive. It’s hard to achieve your dreams when everyone tells you they weren’t worth having in the first place. True, dreams are not everything. You make great points here and I agree with ALL of them. But the whole “you can’t crush a soul. That’s what life on earth is for” thing? The widespread belief that those who achieve their dreams (ESPECIALLY in the entertainment industry, oof) are EXCEPTIONS rather than a kind of Proof of Concept is, in itself, an extremely damaging concept. We are expected to give up on the things we love to be “realistic”. Not enough people question WHY dreams seem foolish to have, and say “maybe things could change”, and “maybe we could live in a society where we don’t have to put our heads down and pretend things don’t bother us.” I’m not naive, I understand how hard it would be to do that. But the more people believe it can happen and work towards it, the more possible it becomes. Instead, in about middle school we begin to get reinforced with the idea that life just kinda sucks and there’s nothing we can do about it, and that anyone who can do something about it is an exception and we shouldn’t try to follow in their footsteps. So no, dreaming without living isn’t good. But being taught that dreams aren’t worth having because the world is cruel and you’re powerless to change that isn’t a great lesson either. We must find a balance. (Side note: The original Monsters Inc actually taught us that things CAN be changed for the better and what’s more that they SHOULD be. Mike may canonically may have wanted nothing more than to be a scarer since childhood now, but remember that when the system was changed towards a world that valued individuals over profit Mike got his chance to be the one going into the doors). Just saying, Monsters University was Pixar owned by Disney, a company that preferred the Status Quo-the original when it was purely Pixar sans Disney influence was more interested in challenging what is widely accepted as the only way to succeed.
I totally agree! Hope is necessary for survival.
wrong spelling of your-

Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying
That's very true.
Just because you didn't achieve your dreams.... doesn't means you are a loser.
Sometimes... it could be bad interpretation or some sort of dream that doesn't exist in the real world.
For ex: kids wants to meet a real Easter bunny making eggs.
In reality, Easter bunny is not real just only kid's imagination while staring a man dressed as the Easter bunny.
Another Example: Having the perfect woman, or the woman of your dreams with short hair, blue eyes, good looking structure face and who can speak Italian or has 100% Italian Blood.
in reality... the perfect woman or the type of woman doesn't exit in real life.
It is Fictional and often your own imagination.
Dreams are not perfect neither,
and sometimes it could be awful or annoying that some way.
Dreams are not important but more like..... a recommendation to you to achieve your goals in this world and enjoy life.
what it matters the most is happiness than success.
Cuz the truth is... success is NOT always happiness.
Better to listen to yourself, than those Celebrities or motivator speakers who always criticizes you for not achieving success.
Often these greatest successful people or greatest billionaires are lonely people and wishes to commit suicide.... ALWAYS (Not Joking)
So... is not your fault if you don't achieve it, you can try other alternative path or other goals if something doesn't worked out as you planned. Do something what makes you happy, not what the world tells you to do.
This is YOUR life!.... NOT theirs!
You are the ONLY one who has the control.
Don't give up!
Everyone on the comment section, I pray that your dreams will come true, but make sure to appreciate your life the way it is right now. Doing that will make your life truly fulfilled. God put you in this 🌍 for a reason, so be thankful for your life, regardless of how big or small it is.
Soul is genius, rarely do I come across such a meaningful life lesson in a film.
It's so good!
Love this channel
Love this comment
You used La La Land as an example of movies where dreams come true and I just don’t feel like that is the correct summation of that movie. Love the content thank you!
1:29 Lol can't blame Disney for inventing love at first sight, though it might be some of the first aggressively marketed to kids. I saw that mentioned in Don Quixote. X,D And I'm sure many more. The "woman-so-beautiful-you-have-stolen-my-heart" is so old and so used I can't think of a culture I haven't read something with that idea in it!
I feel they get unfairly blamed since they adapted a ton of fairy tales that already had that trope
I think telling stories of dreams come true is more acceptable because they help us dream. And as Veritasium said in his video "Is Success Luck or Hard Work" the advice is paradoxical "You must believe you are in complete control of your destiny, but secondly that you have to know that that's not true for you or anyone else and that luck plays a huge role in it." XD We know that sometimes you get what you're going for, so these kinds of stories make sense, but it's so important to talk about "What about when it doesn't?" that I'm glad that this is being explored in mainstream media, too. :)
Precisely! Couldn't agree more!
beautiful work
Thank you!
Finally a realistic message
Yup!
Thank you for your videos

Seems to me some portion of people have net negative lives and probably would have been better off never having been born.
There is a ton of suffering in life at least for most - there are good things too, but whether or not those good things make enduring the bad worth it I’m not sure - for some the answer is probably no.
If it were up to me I would legalize physician assisted painless suicide for the people who do conclude that it’s not worth it to press on/their ratio of bad to good or the severity of the bad is too great. Acquaintance of mine shot himself and lived, just as a vegetable - that’s even worse and could be avoided if we legalized the painless medical way out.
Not everyone wants to be a wage slave and work their life away as a peon at some job they hate never having money pretending to be something they’re not only to end up shitting their pants in some nursing home waiting to die and for what? Don’t even get me started on how terrible aging is - death itself is usually very painful (heart attacks and cancer hurt a lot for example).
Many people don’t have the lives they dream about having where they’re important and successful and finically stable and the people they want to love and admire them actually do and they dont suffer from medical conditions /don’t have to work a job they hate (etc). If I knew what my life would be and got to choose whether or not to be born, I’d just as well rather stay in the void to be honest.
Good things exist - hobbies, delicious food, relationships if you’re fortunate, but the ratio and severity of the bad is often too great for those to make up for seems to me. I think it’s also relevant if people had the means to change their circumstances they obviously would, they don’t because they can’t or because the risk is too high and would probably lead to a worse life for example.

I think it isn’t ok. Chasing a dream can ruin your life and you may not know it until you’re desperately despondent.
