The whole point of animation is to do what can't be done in live action. When you remake a classic animated movie into live action, you're taking away the whole reason that movie was made in the first place.

I feel like the live action versions count on you having seen the original movie because then you automatically fill in the gaps for yourself. You know why the live action characters are doing something but only because you remember their motivations from the animated original. That's why everything is so rushed and flat; they count on nostalgic audiences to see it more as a retelling than an independent film, but still market them as the latter.

It’s interesting because I had never seen the original movie since my parents bought very little “classic” Disney movies for me as a kid (I just always watched the new ones when they came out, except for maybe two or three older movies we actually had at home) but I went to see the remake with a friend who wanted to see it because she’s actually Arabian and I absolutely loved it. I didn’t really feel like there were any gaps or motivations I didn’t get. Same goes for my family who I showed the movie to later (who had also never seen the original). I didn’t really discuss the movie with people who had already seen the original except for the Arabian friend I mentioned and she loved it too so I never got any other perspectives on it.

@ I'm in the same boat. Only saw the first one when i was very small. I thought the live action was very good-- not a mind-blowing work of art, but a solid movie with excellent actors. The sets were beautiful. Some people have legitimate points about why the first was better but i think a lot of people's opinions were warped by sentimentality

One reason I dislike these remakes so much is because they are banking on everyone who watches the new movie to have also seen and loved the old one. Because of this way of thinking it causes them to cut or not use elements that are essential in building these loveable characters so that they can cram more "original" elements in so that they will get praise for "reinventing the movie" when all they have done is make a heartless copy. These movies are not made to last, they will be forgotten in 5, 10 years while the originals will live on because they were created with such love and passion, these are a quick cash in on the nostalgia of their once great creativity.

Gaming Galaxies No, the kids _wouldn’t_ want to go back to the original, because the only idea they’ll have of the movie is the boring live-action version. They won’t bother to see it again in the animated versions, because they’ve been told the animated versions are the same exact thing but crappy, sexist, and childish, because that’s what all the marketing is trying to tell people the animated versions are like. Children aren’t magically going to know the animated movies are any better unless their parents tell them why. And the kind of lazy parents that would take their kids to the live action cash grabs and make them sound like the same great thing as the originals, probably aren’t going to explain _why_ the originals were any better. So the kids won’t bother, because why would they? They think they know the story and it wasn’t _that_ good. And they’ll assume the animated version is a worse version of the new, modern one, because that’s what they’ve been told, and their parents won’t explain exactly why the originals were better.

@@CenterRow The titles of your videos can be improved. You need to state more what you're saying in the video, and if it's to do with Disney, put Disney in the title! A better title for this that I believe would increase viewership would be "How Disney Live Action FAILS at Character Introduction" Or something similar. Bit more click-baity, says a bit more obviously what the video's thesis is, mentions Disney, fails is also a very strong title word especially with all caps. Slightly more attention grabby.

Regarding Aladdin and Jasmine's first meeting: the fact that Jasmine goes along with his plan so quickly and is so good at hoodwinking the merchant shows brilliantly how compatible Jasmine and Aladdin are, despite their wildly different backgrounds. They just *get* each other. Jasmine is daring and a quick thinker just like Aladdin is, and it's further reinforced in the scene where she pretends to seduce Jafar to distract him. Both Aladdin and Jasmine are slightly different characters in the remake, so I understand why some things were changed/cut, but I don't think there were many scenes showing the unique and instant synergy their animated counterparts had.

The fact that this is the case for every disney remake is really really bad. If you do a remake usually it's to improve or refresh the story. Not be completely reliant on the old story. The only exception to this is with the new spiderman movies and that's bc the origin story has been done to death that we don't actually need to see it anymore. @@kavyasundar7240 I strongly disliked the Aladdin Broadway musical and loved the life action and animated versions. When Aladdin on Broadway massaged Jasmine's shoulders during a whole new world scene I felt so creeped out. I totally felt the same way about the character introductions when I watched the live action, but there was one particular moment that did it for me. That moment when the prince (original)/guard (new) tells him: “You we’re born a street rat. You will for a street rat. And none but your fleas will mourn you.” (Or “no one” or “nothing,” I don’t remember, but you get the point) The emotion of that scene in the original was POWERFUL not because it was a complicated scene, but because there was a pause, and in that pause, we got to FEEL the emotion that Aladdin felt when he heard someone tell him the things he’s trying not to believe about himself. I feel like Aladdin’s introduction didn’t get the weight it deserved at all, but I especially felt cheated out of that scene. So, anyways, thanks for the video!

“You were born a street rat. You’ll die a street rat. And only your flees will mourn you!” I totally agree. That line was so powerful, and it led into the one jump ahead reprise (don’t know what it’s called but it goes “riff raff, street rat, I don’t buy that. If only they’d look closer...” I felt like the power and emotion of that song and scene was so lost by it not following that prince scene. Honestly the worst part of the live action Aladdin for me was the beginning. When I realized they had gotten through 20 minutes of the original movie in five minutes just to make more screen time for Will Smith, Genie’s love (at first sight) story, and the new original scenes that involved jafar not turning into a snake, I knew this movie didn’t stand a chance.

Straight away, I was not happy with the rushed introduction of Aladdin and jasmine, call me sappy, but I like romance so I felt that the "chemistry" between Aladdin and princess jasmine was overlooked in the beginning. In the cartoon, it was love at first sight for Aladdin, in the live action, it's a rushed-emotionless chase scene. Love your stuff, I subbed.

Honestly, while I mostly just want more 2D animated movies to be made again, if Disney simply HAS to give a movie a live action remake, then a neat one to tackle would be Treasure Planet. Unlike some of the incredibly well known and iconic movies like Aladdin or Lion King, this one isn’t as well known and can actually be really cool in terms of special effects and all when made for live action. Do I think it would be as good as the original? Probably not, but it WOULD bring attention to an underrated movie, and those who like the remake enough may want to see the original because of it. Though I would much rather we just get new stuff, if they simply have to continue their remake streak, I’d rather it be a movie that’s not so well known.

I think Disney might be controlled by vampires because of the 4 remakes I have seen (and the Star Wars franchise and some characters in the Marvel movies) ; Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Lion King, the life and soul of the originals have been sucked right out, leaving a withered dusty husk that wisps away, leaving a longing for the originals.
Which I did. I rewatched the original Aladdin and the memories and the feelings of the remake just washed away like a badly built sand castle slowly disintegrates by the sea of forgetfulness , leaving no trace of its existence.
On a side note: I did notice something I never saw before. In the animation, the shop keeper at the start and the genie are the ONLY human characters that have three fingers and a thumb, proving that the shop keeper was the genie. It's these nuances that make a great film magical. What did we get in the remake?, a blatant spoon-fed 'the boat guy is clearly the genie' no discovery, no fan theories, no "10 things you missed' UA-cam video. The intros basically gave us all we needed to know about the rest of the movie and it’s summed up so well in this video. Aladdin as a character is overall much more likable and charming. While the new Aladdin acts like a common thief who’s a bit more greedy than just starving. He’s more of a con man and harder to get behind as a protagonist. The differences are so loud, in their mannerisms, in their personalities, and even in their voices. When Aladdin gives his iconic line, “Do you trust me?”
Cartoon Aladdin actually sounds like you can trust him. He sounds genuine and sweet while the 2019’s Aladdin...sounds like the kind of guy your dad tells you to stay away from. And not in a cutesy bad boy way but in a stalker, creeper way...

I sincerely thank you for actually showing why while the ideas are there, the execution is very poor. Sure on paper those 2 characters are identical in the beginning, but how they are portrayed through the events of the movie really makes the difference. As you said we saw Aladdin1s daily struggle for food and survival while also showing him having a good heart when he gave his loaf of bread to the orphans and even show us how he actually feels and want from life in One Jump Ahead Reprise scene. It's only a few minutes but establishes the character really well.
We have none of that in the remake. He has no struggles, to him running away from the guards is just fun and he really doesn't seem to really long for anything or even anything under the surface. What you see is what you get and how the movie presents him, he's really just another thief you would see everyday. Kinda baffles me they went that way because with this change, why should we believe that he's a diamond in the rough? In the original him only stealing food and still being good to others showed he's not just some low-life thief as most people would think, while in the remake only clue we get him not just being a low-life thief is when he gave those dates to the kids, but even that felt rushed.
Plus for some reason they decided to give this whole "you are like the villain" arc to him, which in my opinion was really not needed and honestly they couldn't even execute that properly. During the whole second act where we should have noticed the changes in his character and actually greed taking over him, we get nothing but him being an idiot and having next to no charisma. The only time in the 2nd act he admitted liking to be a prince, was when after his date with Jasmine. Are you telling me that Jasmine was the cause of him actually "drink from the cup"? Wow, great message. Love makes you bad. Oh and before anyone telling me that he only wanted to remain a prince for Jasmine... Aladdin never brings her name up during the break up conversation with Genie. IT's Genie who does bring up and Aladdin simply dismiss it by saying he would rather keep lying to her as he thinks this is the new him...
In the original Aladdin did not want power at all. The only reason he wished himself to be a prince was so he can get a chance with Jasmine. Sure he tried to act like any princes, but after some talk with Genie and how Jasmine reacted to that, he quickly reverted to himself. Heck even when the Sultan told him he would be the next ruler, he started to become uneasy and confused, showing that he only did this for love, not to get power. Even when he breaks his promise to Genie, you can tell he's actually feeling bad about it and wish he had another way to do this, but he simply did not believe in himself be able to pull this off alone. The whole 3rd act is about him making up for his mistake and prove not only to others, but to himself that he's actually worth something.
Oh yeah, 3rd act Aladdin. After pulling this "hero is like the villain" trope, there's no actual character change, no actual change of the heart moment for Aladdin on screen. After Jafar steals the lamp, we only get to see normal Aladdin again, basically being reverted back to how he was in the beginning. That's not character growth, that's just the creators throwing away their own subplot, because they still followed the original movie and their Aladdin never had this stupid subplot.

Jasmine is a downgrade imo. Like you said not only we did not get an actual introduction for her (and mind you in that introduction we actually got to know her, what she wants and how she feels in her own life. They even show that through the caged birds scene) but in reality she's all tell, don't show. She keeps talking about how she trained herself to become Sultan, how she has to rule because only she cares about the people of Agrabah (nice disrespect to your father, Jasmine) and how she's being silenced nonstop. Yeah, too bad we get the total opposite of that through the actual events and actions of the story.
Jasmine stealing loaf of bread to kids and doesn't know she has to pay for stuff. Yeah, supposed best option for ruling doesn't know that money is a thing... In the original the reason she did not know about money was due to her being isolated and "locked up" in the palace, not really know much about the outside world. There's not a single excuse for why the supposed booksmart princess doesn't know what money is.
The new have the whole being silenced part: only Jafar doesn't listen to her while everyone else does, including her father, the guards, Dalia and even Aladdin. And the song while it's nice and sang well, it has no real effect on anything since 1, she's not silenced for the most part, 2, she sings that in her head only 3, she gets almost immediately silenced by Jafar after her little speech to Hakim.
And personal complain, but does Jasmine really thinks all she needs for ruling is making people happy? I know Jafar is supposed to be the bad guy, but even he has a bit more sense on actual rling, such as knowing that other kingdoms may not like them and would attack them, therefore having the army prepared and actualy defendign the borders are necessary.
Once again good idea,s but horrible execution. For ho much they say Jasmine just wanted love and did nothing in the original, she was way more active and actually stood up against Jafar numerous times, heck she even seduced him just to help Aladdin out. True bravery and shows that she still loves him.

Let's talk about Genie. Warning: personal bias might come up here. While I understand most people praises Will Smith for making the character his own, I couldn't help but dislike this Genie. None of the things he made me like Genie in the original was in Will Smith Genie. Instead of a sad clown who despite him being mostly treated as a mere tool, still remained kind and helped to people, we got a typical jaded genie. He's dismissive towards Aladdin in the whole second act, to the point he tells him he couldn't be his master and to go back to his room, so he can't ruin his fun at the party. Even his dream to become free that meant a lot to him in the original, in the new he barely cares about it. Instead we get a subplot of him wooing away Dalia, because apparently he fell in love with him at first sight (guess to this Genie how the actual person is in the inside doesn't matter). Not once did I believe that they actually became friends in the live-action, not even in the 3rd act where they tried to show Genie as sad and caring as possible.
"But Zita, he's clearly mroe caring and selfless. Look at how he reacted to Aladdin' when he broke his promise" yeah no. You see, people usually call out bs and get mad, especially if it's about their friends and family. Genie had all the reasons to be mad at Aladdin in the original, as he felt betrayed and once again feeling like he's just being used as a tool. And mind you there Aladdin was still good, just unsure if he can do this without Genie. There's no excuse why Will Smith Genie acts so calmly and tells him how he's friends with him and breaking his heart when not only he showed barely any kindness towards Aladdin (he was mostly berating him, only help to woo Dalia and he mostly boasted his own ego) but Aladdin actually was a big jerk there and should have been called out on his bs properly.
I get that they didn't want to copypase Robin Williams, but was it necessary to change the character entirely? Both Dan Castellaneta and Jim Meskimen could pull of the character well and personally I think Jim Carrey could have been a really great choice for Genie, so why they just made Genie into Will Smith with genie powers, instead of Will Smith actually playing the character? Sorry no offense to Will Smith, but I simply disagree with this choice about Genie.
Lastly the themes. If you paid attention, you can see I mentioned the characters feeling trapped and wanting to get out of their situations, why pretending to be something you are not is wrong and show that they are more than what meets the eye. All these elements show what the themes of the original movie was: being trapped, be yourself and freedom. Simple but important themes even today. Yet the new movie threw all these away just to give space to the new ones such as the villain and hero are alike, Jasmine wanting to become sultan and Genie...well, he's more busy with being in love with a girl he just met a moment ago.
Issue with this desicion is that the new creators forgot that the themes actually what connected the characters in the first place: Jasmine and Aladdin start to fall for the other because both feel trapped, both feel like there's more to them than what society says and both wanting to get out of their current social position. Genie and Aladdin become friends because once again they both feel trapped, both wanting freedom and both can understand that there's more to other than just the surface.
Without these, the characters in the new movie don't feel connected, as all 3 of them wants something else. I not once believed that Jasmine actually loves Aladdin, because the only time she warmed up to him was when he praised and agreed with her being the ruler would be the best. If anything here it feels like Jasmine only marries him, because he would let her do all the ruling stuff without a single word against it. And I already talked about why I never believed Genie and Aladdin became friends here.
In short, my issue with the movie is that it took away stuff from the original that were actually important, adding new stuff that they couldn't be bothered to actually execute it properly (Genie romance subplot, the whole Jasmine want to be ruler and Aladdin's changing into bad guy stuff), adding new plotholes in thanks to all the removing and adding changes and giving us characters that on paper may be just like the originals, but in execution they are just shadows of their formel selves. I feel like the people who say this is as good as the original or even say it's better are a bit blinded by nostalgia or simply never actually looked at it beyond surface level. Aladdin is a very dear movie to me and it saddens me to see how the new creators butchered so many elements of it and riding on nostlagia, while claiming they "fixed" the original's issues...
Anyway, that's all from me. Sorry for it getting this long and writing this comment this way. Had to split it into 3 parts to actually save my original comment.

In the original Jasmine sees a small child reaching for an apple and didn't understand that payment was necessary, it just looks like the kid couldn't reach. There doesn't seem to be that kind of a misunderstanding in the 2019 version.

I watched the live action remake on a field trip with my entire grade, and you have no idea how talkative the theater was. Do you know why?
*because nobody really found it that interesting or tense*
Note: I feel really bad for Will Smith, I think he did a good job as being a genie, he delivered the lines and did a good job acting. It’s only really the script and the rest of the movie that dulled down his character.

The problem with remakes is that they're trying to one-up something people consider in their minds to be *perfection.* You can't. Even if it's not perfect, it's perfect to the fans.
Also, requiring someone to watch the animated version to understand character motivations is a big no-no. It only shows how glaringly obvious your film's dependence on that original animation is and makes it look like a cheap knockoff by comparison, no matter how good it may be in other aspects.

The toys that made us series on Netflix makes a really good point in the first episode that totally applies to what Disney is doing. We will probably never get any new or original ideas ever again because it is much harder and much more expensive to create and build a new idea up for mass marketing than it is to rebrand and remake an old idea that is known and loved.

I think I’ve pinned down my problem with the live action Aladdin- it isn’t memorable.
The animation brought such great flair to this film- it still is my favourite Disney film- and all that is lost with the live action.
I think that problem especially shows in the musical numbers. Granted, it’s not the jungle books ‘Bear Necessities’ being half mumbled for maybe a quarter of a scene, but it still doesn’t have any of what made the originals great.
Jasmine showed up, stole the bread. I went neat, okay, that’s Jasmine. She got her bracelet stolen, ran, and I forgot what she looked like or who she was supposed to be.
Aladdin is better in that regard- mostly because he has a goddamn monkey hanging off of him- I’m fairly certain if Abu wasn’t there I’d forget him too.
And that’s to say nothing of the Genie...

The reason why the Aladdin 2019 introduction didn't connect with people was because they portrayed him as a theif instead of a street rat. In movie we see him living a decent lifestyle with nice clothes similar to everyone else and an apartment with teas and a gituar. We don't see him struggle with anything and seems to be doing fine on his own, so when he gives the children the dates it feels like he's giving away scraps that he didn't want, also they only mention once that he's a street rat only in song but they refer to him numerous times as a theif. How are we supposed to feel simpify for this character only when they sing it to us, a perfect example of show don't tell.

I was so incredibly confused when I watched the remake of Aladdin because I had never seen the original. I knew there was a guy named Aladdin and a girl named Jasmine, but that was ALL I knew about it, so those few opening scenes were extremely confusing for me. It took me a while to recognize that the girl in white was Jasmine, and then once I did, I was confused as to why she immediately just stuck with Aladdin and had a bit of a crush on him. The ONLY endearing part about him was his good looks, everything else was a bit disturbing (he was obviously a thief, wouldn’t give her back her bracelet even though he was a “good guy”, seemed to have too good of a good reputation with all the ladies of the town, etc.)
Now that you’ve explained it, it makes sense why I was so confused and why I didn’t like Aladdin, they took out all the parts that make you root for him!

For a person who is more critical of film or who has more specific tastes than just "i just wanna be entertained by something", it's hard to justify going out of your way to watch these, especially when the og films are available, are more guaranteed to be liked by you and friends, and are much shorter (the fact that all movies feel the need to be over 2 hours doesn't help the remakes either). Not to disparage you or the op for enjoying them, you're well within your right to do so, but I think it's a bit unfair and thoughtless to just say people should suck it up and be quiet about them just bc you like them. Iirc, "all this for a loaf of bread" was a reference to les miserables, because the singer for Jasmine was most well known for her work as Eponine at the time. Although, searching this now I cannot find a good source for it, but I can confirm that Lea Salonga did play both Eponine and Fantine.
Either way, great video. I was surprised when my coworkers really loved this movie and even more baffled when I saw it myself. I mean, the movie had entire scenes that accomplished nothing. I'm no filmmaker, but I really feel like that's a basic rule of constructing a film, because I consider it a basic rule of books, which I'm more familiar with: every scene should accomplish something, whether it furthers the plot or establishes something about the character.
The introduction of Aladdin really threw me off as well. He came off as unsympathetic, which is also half the actor's truly atrocious acting and complete lack of charisma and half the fact that he was stealing jewelry. Why would they make that choice?

I actually quit watching the movie when Aladdin and the genie were in the room being introduced and the scene is beyond awkward. My problem with it was two fold, first because we don't get the story he spins to save Jasmine all we know about him is that he is a pickpocket.
In the animated movie (plus some of the original source material, but that's a lot darker so not as important), it is established that he is a bit of a con artist, important to help make his survival despite living on the streets this way more believable. That fact, would mean he would not be nearly as awkward lying to officials, we could assume he's had to lie his way out of trouble and he's not done anything wrong this time.
Sure he's a little awkward, I mean he really likes this girl and wants to make a good impression, but while in both he thinks of the wrong things that would impress her, his delivery is beyond painful in the live action. I didn't feel like the Genie derived to be freed (he was belittling, and does little to win us over in his introduction either), I didn't have attachment to Aladdin he just seemed like an okay person not a "diamond in the rough", and The king wasn't as... eccentric which I think really sold his blind trust of Jaffar better.

I felt Aladdin 2019 was two different movies. A musical is what the studio wanted and a Guy Ritchie interpretation of the film. I love the music from the 1992 film. What I enjoy about the live action is the layers of MidEastern instrumentation, which brings a richness to it. As a musical, the numbers were flat and one dimensional. Even Prince Ali was hyped to be this BIG scene and it wasn't. Maybe Guy Ritchie is used to grittier films and signature stylings (I don't think I've seen a Ritchie film) but it didn't work here. I think if Ritchie could have not made it into a musical, maybe it would be different? Its hard to say, as a whole. I feel its either one or the other and not both.

One of my main problems with the Aladdin remake is that they said that Jasmine now has a goal. And when I saw that, I thought "How did Jasmine not have a goal in the original?" Her goal was literally to leave the palace and live her life, even if it was just for one day. But for some reason in this they made it that she actually wants to rule Agrabah but do so independently. So I don't know if Disney did this to look 'wOkE', but when you look at what they did to Belle in that remake, it wouldn't surprise me.
