It is impossible to discuss the rise of Tanahashi and how he revived NJPW without Giant Bernard. Tanahashi is not athletic as Okada, Omega, or Ibushi, but his best game is the ability to take punishment and come back stronger (Tanahashi himself admitted that Kenta Kobash inspired him so much). Unlike Nakamura, Tanahashi needed someone to help him shine. Giant Bernard was the right man: Matt Bloom's juggernaut presence helped Tanahashi establish his tencaious style. Bloom is arguably the greatest gaijin wrestler in Japan. He was not just an agile big man: his versatile style, ability to sell, and outside-the-ring charm really brought fans back to NJPW. Before the Bullet Club, trust me, people went to NJPW shows to see and interact with Bloom - such a sweet gentleman.
Yeah, he was so well loved in Japan, i honestly have no idea why he went back to WWE, glad he's now just a trainer and producer instead of being misused even more.
Honestly Big Van Vader and Giant Bernard were the top two Gaijin wrestlers in NJPW pre-foreign explosion with the rise of Bullet Club (because after that it gets a bit tricky to rank). Prince Devitt would be a third place for me
@@Noobie2k7 He was supposed to get a push as Lord Tensai, but the public simply didn't care. That and, I guess, him wanting to be closer to home. But at least he's in a good position now with NXT.
Dream match: Tanahashi vs Eddie Guererro. I first saw Tanahashi in 2008 after defending the IWGP Heavyweight title vs Kurt Angle, which was amazing to see.
Tanahashi vs Eddie would've been amazing. Especially considering the clashing arrogant personalities. I've always thought Tanahashi and Cena would be a true classic. The top wrestlers of their respective companies during their primes.

No Tanahashi and New Japan might not recovered from the dark ages. With both All Japan and Noah on the decline by 2010, it would have meant a huge blow to Japanese wrestling. If The New Japan boom from the 2010's does not get ignited by Tanahashi this could means a lot of things too: No Okada because he never gets a matching rival No US expansion No Bullet Club No indies boom in the US because of the Bullet Club, wich could have also meant: ROH doesn't grow as much No NXT No AEW Did Tanahashi saved Wrestling in the 2010's? He just might have done it. He's truly once in a century.
A big part of his look that night was storytelling. In his redebut match earlier in the night his clothes were a little bit too big and didn't fit him right and while he won it was a far cry from the legendary Okada matches that he can seemingly have with anyone. He seemed awkward on the mic when he challenged Tanahashi and it was clear Tanahashi was mostly humouring him by accepting his challenge. But at New Beginning, Okada was a different person. While Tanahashi played the crowd and did his usual shtick Okada just stared through him and you could see Tanahashi was shook by it. Then the Rainmaker teared down the once in a century talent by scouting all his signature moves and reversing them into what would become his own signatures. Everything was done with the sole goal of setting Tanahashi up to take a fall by making him underestimate and it worked beautifully. It's a great example of risking fan support for the sake of storytelling because fans of many other promotions would of saw it as way too soon and being pushed more because of Gedo's influence than a natural build of fan support and talent but NJPW trusted it's audience enough to trust them enough to have a plan.
THIS shows how bloody brilliant NJPW's long term booking truly is. Even if its not planned that far in advance they weave history into every aspect of their booking, its genius.
These are unbelievably excellent. I appreciate Kevin Kelly for helping put these together because they are a wonderful recap for newer fans of NJPW such as myself. They do such a great job of showing the highlights of some incredible years for the company.
I appreciate the fact that new japan makes up for the fans by improving the character of the one being chosen as the IWGP champ , to make it not look like he's being rushed in the position.

That make's it clear that NJPW fans doesn't get tired of watching the same match between the same stars and watching the same person winning the same title again and again
There is a beauty to the long term booking which I love here. There is a respect and weight given to the records for example the number of defended record. It was treated as a prestigious thing and having Tanahashi tied to Okada’s 11th defence, plus all the other history behind it, even just from listening to this talk through makes you appreciate the richness of new Japan’s booking
Wow, this is awesome. I wish I would've watched all this as it was happening. I might still track it all down. Is there NJPW streaming service? This is amazing storytelling. My first glimpse of Tanahashi was Forbidden Door
Love the recount. I love pro wrestling i grar that if we here in the us don't get the Japanese wrestling on a regular basis we will be stuck with sports entertainment.
The Question is..... Will Hiroshi Tanahashi win the G1 Climax xXx this time? But with a different scenario, this time against the Death Rider Jon Moxley. Not for the G1 Climax Briefcase, but for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship in order to do the Double Gold Dash Part 3 (Since Part 1 was Masahiro Chono the NWA World Heavyweight Champion vs The Great Muta the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, & the Part 2 was Kazuchika Okada the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion vs the Ungovernable Tetsuya Naito the IWGP Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship) on the Finale of G1 Climax XXX. History of Suzuki-Gun next please?
We also need History of L. I. J.
👍
Just Suzuki himself would be a great series
Most of it would be probably storylines from other promotions notably NOAH. LIJ is still pretty new and Showbuckle already made that.
