350Z Manual Swap Pt. 2 - Clutch Switch Wiring, FAQ
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2020
- This video is a follow-up to my 350Z Manual Swap video. I wanted to show the process I used, as well as for other model years, to wire up the clutch interlock switch in order to get the car to start. I also installed the final interior piece around the shift knob to complete the transformation and answered a few questions regarding the swap. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the solid input on the swap, ive been looking on here for months and havent found any solid videos on doing this. And forums havent really been of much help either. I'll definitely be gathering swap parts for my z here soon!
so helpful bro, I've been looking for a video like this for ages.
Thank you for the explanation and links! Helped a lot!
Dude thanks for all your videos ima swap my g35 here some time soon and you have a wealth of knowledge I appreciate how you explain things keep it going
I really appreciate that, and I'm happy I can help in some way. Good luck with your swap!
I just watched both your videos and found them to be extremely informative especially since I just went thorugh the worst day my motor gave out on me and if I'm going to swap my motor I should just go ahead and do the manual swap as well :/ thank you for puting these videos together
Sorry to hear, man. I definitely agree with swapping both at the same time since you'll have everything apart already. Let me know if you have any questions about the swap, and good luck either way!
Thanks for the video, It was helpful.
Great explanation and you deserve wayyyy more subscribers
Thanks for the kind words! I don't disagree 😉
This helped me a ton thanks my guy!
Great video thank you again
you helped sooo much dude, thank you i thought i botched it!
Swapping auto to manual hope to finish up today.
Hello, kinda late to this but really hope I can get a response, I’ve got a wire hooked up to wire 53, and running that into the cabin, the clutch depress sensor has the two wires ones green and the other grey and red, the grey and red wire is the same color as 53, I have the red and grey wire hooked up to the fuse “put it into the o2 sensor fuse”and the green wire hooked up to 53 coming into the cabin. When I go to start the car it won’t start and has the park up shift light on, my reverse lights are also on, any clue on what I’ve got wrong ?
So this eliminates swapping ECUs and removing NATS but you lose reverse lights if you keep the 5at eco and harness?
I need more videos brother!!
Working on it!
Hey bud great work so here’s my issue the dealership put a new ipcdm box in and I can’t figure out which wire to use do you think you could help I’ve had this car for a few years and still can’t get it running?
Great explanation again! Thanks for the help from part 1 as well. But I was thinking:
By reading this video's comments and a little research, if I am using the 6MT ECU and 6MT harness, I can skip this step and the reverse lights will work?
From the research I've done, yes I think you're right. The 6MT harness should have all connections to the the transmission, which includes the reverse position switch (the thing that signals the IPDM to turn on the reverse lights). This should also keep your cruise control active if you have it, which is only allowed if the neutral position switch is wired. Given the point of my build, I didn't need either of these options.
Dillon, thank you so much for sharing this detailed video! I have a 2004 350z, can I still do the swap without changing out the harness and ECU? I'm assuming you have a 2006 350z. So it works the same for the 2004 and 2006 model, everything except the clutch pedal?
Hey, thanks for the kind words. You're right, the swap should be exactly the same for your 2004 apart from the clutch interlock switch wiring. I will say that a lot of people (but not all) are getting a code if they stick to original harness and ECU due to the TCM being disconnected. Do with that what you will, but it wasn't an issue for me since I already have codes for lack of EVAP system, cats, etc... For what it's worth, mine didn't trigger the U1000 (TCM non-communication) code.
Where did you buy the male part of the clutch pedals wire? I can’t seem to find it
What if i got mt ecu and bcm but couldnt find the wiring harness for mt ecu and bcm if doing this will it work
Thanks for the information, really appreciated. For the newer models, HR, will this sort of follow the same concept for the wiring part? I've noticed that you have a DE engine. Thank you in advance!
Yes, from a quick glance it looks like the wiring is the exact same for an 07/08 as it was for mine. Even the wiring at the fuse box is the same from what I can see.
Oh, and you're welcome!
Hello. I am planning to execute this task in Korea. So I have a question. What number should I connect with 53 in ipdm to start without stepping on the clutch pedal? Have a great day!
Would the wiring be the same if you change out the a/t harness to m/t?
Where did you get the safety switch pigtail?? No manual g's in my local pick n pull yards
Is there a way to check the gears before installing the trans
where could i find that connector for the switch?
Thks video was great! I'll be buying a manual g35 next week for 1200 as a parts car to use for my 350z swap, then going to sell the engine and chassis for it when I'm done and make some money back, I believe it's an 03 g35 so won't be the cd009 :( anything I need to check before hand?
The main difference between the CD009 and earlier models was synchros, which are pretty hard to check without driving the car haha. Otherwise, just check that the driveshaft doesn't have any obvious impacts or cracks since it's a carbon composite and you don't want it exploding on you.
buenas noches!!!
como convierto un 350z a automatico, es facil, cual seria procedimiento son modelos 2003
These videos are exactly what the Dr. ordered but I have one question that I can’t seem to find answers to. Is there a way to check the transmission before I buy it? Like make sure the gears work ect before installing
You can manually spin the input shaft (or with a large drill) in each gear to check for any unusual feelings while watching to see if the output end is rotating. Aside from cracking the thing open that's pretty much all I'd do. If you buy from a salvage yard or shop, you can usually get a 30 day warranty or something like that.
Hello i have 2005 Infiniti g35 coupe the wiring is the same right?
Your videos gave me the confidence to tackle the swap thanks!
I have a 2004 G35. My IPDM setup looks like that of 2004.5+ models even though it has a manufacture date of 10/03. Based upon how my IPDM looks would you feel safe to proceed with wire 53?
If it has the layout of an 04.5+ then it should be wire 53. If it's the correct wire, it should be grey and red. Probably not a bad idea to test it out with a multimeter before fully committing to the wiring.
Dillon Smith yeah it is a grey/red wire so that fills me with confidence. Will test before splicing as I’m in no rush to do this twice.
@@DillonSmith1 she fired right up!
So it’ll be the same wire for the 07?
Do the transmission sensors just connect from the auto ?
Hey I'm in Nz and I'm about to be doing this on my 05 track in about months time and I was wondering itll be exactly the same as yours I'm gussing
I can't imagine why it wouldn't be. The wiring harness changed for the '04.5 model year, so yours should definitely be the same as mine. I would recommend running a jumper wire from a 12v source to the #53 wire and seeing if it starts before doing any cutting/splicing. I always like to test my wiring, if possible, before doing anything permanent just to minimize the workload. Wiring is my least favorite part of any job.
It’s been a couple months since you did the wiring and I just wanted to know if everything is still going good with the 5AT harness and ECU?
Everything is great!
hey im looking to do this swap to my Z as well just started collecting all the parts i need. I've seen people saying that you will need a new ECU with NATS deleted did u get a new one or is there a bypass for this? thanks! awesome videos btw!
Hey bro I was wondering the same thing have you figured it out
@@Mohammed-lw7bm hey sorry just saw this. I finished the swap back in Feb so wat i did was jus wired the parking sensor switch to a switch to power fuse all in the ipdm i didnt need to get a new ECU
Hi, could you please point out which power switch you used to connect the park position sensor and sorry to bring back a 1yr old message
Sorry for the ridiculous question but I have a 2007 that I wanna do this swap to, what all would I need besides the obvious stuff, like would I need anything different than you? What kind of wiring would I have to do as well
As far as I know, the only difference is the transmission and clutch will have to be for an HR car, unlike mine. Clutch interlock wiring looks to be the same as mine. I'm not an expert though, so research is definitely your friend.
Awesome video man! Question. Where do I get that plug with the greenish and orange cable? Is that from a manual harness? I have the swap parts but I have no idea what to plug on the clutch pedal switch.
*pigtail
I pulled this clutch pedal from a manual car in a salvage yard, so I just cut the pigtail and kept it with the switch. If you can't find a car to get one from, you can probably order the pigtail through Nissan or a parts store
Dillon Smith omg your video helped a lot for my g35 project! I just got the car today and the swap was SUCCESSFUL!!! It runs like a different fun car! Thanks for the video and tip once again!!
Thanks for making these videos, Ive been watching your 6spd Manual conversion videos daily for about two weeks now while I source all of the parts to perform the process. I have everything I need except for the clutch pedal assembly to perform the swap on my '03 Z. Are you from Alaska? Ive been to the Moose's tooth when I visited 20 years ago. Anyway, cheers and thanks!
Hey Rob, thanks for the comment! I'm not from there but did live in Alaska for a while (actually drove this car up there from Texas and back). Moose's Tooth was and is still one of my favorite pizza and beer places, though I haven't been myself in a few years. Good luck and have fun with the swap. I hope these videos will be of some help!
@@DillonSmith1 Studio Movie Grill in Monrovia California comes close to the Moose's Tooth experience, but not quite as good. Again thanks for these vids!
quick question for wire 53 for the tcm do you wire the blue wire to the clutch and the harness back to the male conector to the fuse box
Have you figured that out yet cuz I’m wondering too
Hey sorry to comment so late lol but why do people say you need the manual ecu and manual wiring harness to do this? Is it because they don’t want to do the splicing or what do you think haha?
From what I can tell, some people just want it to be as close to stock as possible. So yes, they want it to be plug-and-play. In my case, that just didn't make much sense.
i love your chanell i ned hellp iam swap g35 and the lite revers is not work waht inet tow do?
I didn't bother wiring mine, since it's just a track car. But there are links to the FSM's in the description that have wiring diagrams. It should be a pretty simple jumper wire to get the reverse lights working.
Hey I'm going to be doing this on my 04 where do I get that long blue wire and the fuse wire ?
The blue wire was just some spare wire I had leftover from an amp install. Any automotive wire will work. The fuse tap can be found in any parts store.
Awesome videos dude!! I got a couple of questions for my 350z. Was there any modifications to the ECU for it to acknowledge the swap of the AT to MT?( does that apply to this car?) Also, my end goal is to take my Z to the track, is there other components I should keep in mind for that application?
Hey, glad you like the videos! To answer your first question, no I didn't have to do anything to the ECU when swapping to manual. Once I wired up the clutch safety switch, it starts up and runs perfectly. I can't speak for everyone that has done this swap, but for me it works perfectly. As for the track use question, that's a whole other topic that won't fit in a UA-cam comment, haha. There are plenty of forum threads that have served me well on track prep. And if it helps, I'm in the process of getting my Z set up for track use too, so stay tuned for more videos on that soon. I'm editing one right now, in fact.
Hey bud, i have a G35 that was swapped to a 6 speed and the clutch pedal feels really loose as it is disengadged. Is that normal or is there a way to rebuild or fix that?
That's a tough one to answer with limited information. When you say it feels loose as it's disengaged, is the play in side-to-side motion? Do you know if any extra reinforcement was added to the clutch pedal mount, or did they just leave it with only the two bolts from the master cylinder? The firewall is made of pretty thin metal so it has a tendency to flex a bit if that's the only mounting surface. If the play is in the in/out direction, I would start looking into the pedal linkage or maybe the previous owner of the clutch pedal removed the assist spring (pretty common mod in G's and Z's).
i did a manual swap on my 08 HR 350z (i also bought ecu and manual harness) & now a check engine light p0850 comes up and won’t allow me to use cruise control, any tips?
If you want cruise, you need to wire up the neutral position switch. I never did since I swapped steering wheel and it's a dedicated track car that needs no cruise control.
How different would doing the swap be if got to do it on a 370z model since I have a 2011?
Not having tried, I honestly wouldn't know exactly what would be different. From a quick search, it looks like you may have to either swap the ECU or re-flash yours. Mechanically, I'd assume the job would be quite similar.
Alright so i used manual 08 year ECU along with the Manual harness for my 2007 350z. Everything starts the only problem is reverse lights don't work and PNP code P0850 turns on after a while. I reset it but still 10miles later it turns back on.. SInce i used manual ECU and Harness everything was plug and play but my question is do i still have to wire the NSS and Reverse lights. I literally checked every forum and i can't fight the wiring instructions. I got to do smog in 1 month and this is not good atm lol
I've heard that the HR cars have been more difficult with the codes, but the fundamentals should be the same. It sounds like neither your reverse position switch or neutral position switches (both on the transmission body) are hooked up to anything. So if the harness swap didn't give you the plugs for those two sensors, then yes you'll need to wire them.
You can find wiring diagrams in the FSM links in the description, and those will tell you which pins on the auto connector to run to the switches.
@@DillonSmith1 I digured out how to wire up the NSS but the reverse light idk man i can't find it in the FSM. do you know where exactly i wire in the reverse lights too? Really happy im not throwing that NSS code :)
@@projectz5394 did you ever figure this out? i am currently going through the exact same problem! i have an HR with the ecu and harness both manual and now p0850 pops up for me too!!
Do you actually need to do a video on how to hook the wire harness up to the fuse box so the car starts that’s the video I wanna see
Idk if your still on here but question cuz I can’t find it anywhere else, are you able to remove the neutral safety switch code ?
I'll be honest, I don't really have an answer to this since it's not something I was worried about. If I had to guess, I'd say you'd probably need to run a manual ECU or reflash yours as a manual to get rid of it. Might be able to have an uprev tune or something like that to clear it out but I really don't know
Hey man, did you use the factory ECU or did you have to buy one from a manual car?
you can get your automatic one flashed, it’s better and cheaper to find a manual ecu
Will the car still pass smog easily after doing this or would that be another issue?
In my case there are no codes that weren't already there (mine has codes that are unrelated), so I don't see why it would have a problem.
Hey i noticed you said in the first video that you didn't know if the swap would affect the traction control on the car. Did you end up finding out if it did mess any of that up or no?
Nope, traction control still works fine.
@@DillonSmith1 Alright wonderful, I just bought my first Z and am planning on swapping over to a manual. Thanks a ton for the video's they are gonna be all kinds of help.
@@mcnichristian awesome, good luck and have fun with it
Hey man I did this and I just got a u1000 code . Any thoughts on what it could be!
This is a pretty common code due to there being no TCU for the ECU to connect to. The car will run perfectly fine without it.
So i did the swap and now its throwing a U1000 code? Any suggestions why its happening? The car is a 07 350z
From what I understand, this happens on some cars because of the lack of communication with the TCM (which is no longer being used). I didn't get any codes, but it looks like people have just had the code cleared by someone with an OBD II scanner and gone about their day.
@@DillonSmith1 i cleared it and it comes up still
I used the manual engine harness also did not swap out my ECU
If I had to guess, it's probably because you used the manual harness with the auto ECU. Probably a pin that the ECU is looking for that isn't there anymore. Shouldn't hurt anything, but if it's keeping you from getting registered or something then you can get your ECU flashed to get rid of it.
Even figure out how to wire up NPSS for cruise control to work, and also the reverse lights to work?
You can find the pinout for the transmission harness connector in the FSM and wire the neutral and reverse switches accordingly to get them working. I didn't bother since I didn't need them, but I may post a video in the near future detailing at least the reverse lights wiring since I've decided to register the car and will need reverse lights.
Dillon Smith from what I’ve read on forums, the reverse lights just need to be extended with extra wire since the AT harness has a reverse connector already on it that plugs into MT reverse sensor. Not sure about the cruise control. I heard it was pin 102 on the ecu that you can splice into and have that work as well. Can you confirm or add to this? I would think that these wires would indeed be on the AT main connector and could splice into those instead of having to run it to the front of the car and mess with the ecu?!
Dillon Smith I finish doing the swap today but I have it the (at check light) in. The slip to
Should be the same for a 2004
g35?
I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure the years align pretty well with the 350z. The process will be the same, but the TCM wire is what I'm not sure on. If you can find the service manual for your year G35, you can be sure before you splice.
My 350Z is 2007...
Can I swap transmisión 2003?
No, the HR Z's use a different transmission, so you'll need one from a 2007 or newer.
I know this is late but where did you get the pigtail from
It was on the pedal when I pulled it from the junkyard car.
@@DillonSmith1 do you know if they sell it somewhere? Or would I have to do the same thing
Does your traction control still work or does it stop working?
still works
@@harshi.z3353 do you know how to turn it off? because I did manual swap on my Z and it works too but I want to turn it off the tracción control for fun but the button doesn't work
@@JoseDemetrioGonzalez there should be a button that says tcs off above the fuel door button
cant i just jump the wires so i dont need to engage the clutch either?
yes
Do you have any lights pop up?
Nothing related to the manual swap, but I have plenty of lights on. Haha
Did you get any lights on the dash
u will have a check engine like since the automatic trans harness will not be connected but the car wont need that harness to run. although u lose your reverse lights.
How did u get Speedometer to work
The speedometer uses speed sensors on the differential, not the transmission. I didn't have to do anything to get the speedometer to work.
@@DillonSmith1 oh okay thank you
What year is your 350z
2006
Why not simple short the switch?
I had it that way to begin with. I let people drive this car and I don't want the liability of having someone try and start it without the clutch fully engaged while in gear.
Can you do one on how to wire up the reverse lights?
Originally I had no plans to mess with reverse lights, given that it's life will mostly be spent at the track. Now that we all have too much time on our hands, thanks to COVID-19, I might actually get bored enough to play around with reverse lights. I'd say stay tuned, but I can't promise anything.
Please show this, not all manual swaps are done on race cars and still need to pass vehicle state inspections. Hopefully this swap does not illuminate the check/service engine light
I would also really like to see an explanation of this.
Alright, hang tight and I'll see about getting a video up this week.
@@DillonSmith1 has the video been posted? Really need it
Can you swap my z if I pay you???????
Lol I would probably charge you more than a typical shop to do it.
Too bad we could not see the wire connection you made under the hood.
