this beta is cool but IMO it doesn't really fit what half life was going for and also this map was originally gonna be set in a dystopian Seattle only for half life 2 to be set in Europe and have america completely gone! (look at the globe in hla, the usa is just nonexistent)
Hey dude, i wanted to thank you. Why you ask? It's because when i've watched this gameplay i stumbled upon your comment saying about 1984 and i got interested and read it, and i understood and enjoyed it very well though i was only 13 at the time. But anyways thank's for showing me this great masterpiece and author, Orwell is great i've read most of his books, and the best part is because of you, you are the reason why im now smarter than i was before, my intelligence is high but it got better when i've read the book, alright. Thank you! ❤
@@KaNofbeans In terms of actual content the retail version is obviously better because it's finished, but the Beta's atmosphere, overtones and plot could've developed into something better than the retail version.
It would have been better, but its too ambitious, it would take many years to fully complete the original 2001 storyline, and also some things like the long city 17 walks and manhack arcade were just a waste of time, making it into a walking simulator. It's good they shortened the starting and just jumped straight into the shooting, to make it more replayable.
I think in some cases these concepts could be use in an Opposing Force situation with Adrian Shepherd in an industrial district of City 17 or a new city all together.
I find the 2001 beta truly the most fascinating. Just played through it today and there's a lot of stuff I never knew about, even though I thought I've already seen it all.
When the devs made these locations, they made it as a starting point for the world of HL2, what's interesting is that they are even more mesmerizing than the ones in the actual game. Maybe it's because they are lower in detail and more congruent with Half life 1's environmental storytelling - long corridors, huge chasms, lots of verticality in design. The lower fidelity might even add to imagination factor, and the fact that barely any people are seen in these maps- it adds to the lonely and oppressive vibe.
Is there a map of the Air Exchange Refinery in this build of the game? I believe in the book Raising The Bar it talks about you having to make your way to the tower seen at 35:22 and that you're supposed to climb to the top of it. When you get to the top you're supposed to battle a helicopter and then jump down into a pool of chemicals below. Afterwards you're supposed to make your way to a map that goes by (If I'm wrong, please correct me.) airex_03040506. In there if I can recall you're supposed to secure a control center with rebels. After that I'm unsure what happens.
Hey dude I watched almost all your half life gameplays (and everyone did)....I wanted to say please don't switch to fortnite and start showing us half life mods(IDC if it's a half life 1 mod or hl2 mod) and thanks for reading my comment
All the mods for half life/Black Mesa were the resonance cascade happens it show us how is the mess in black mesa from different perspectives, but I don't know a mod were it show us the mess that the resonance cascade leave outside of black mesa, like in a normal city were we are a citizen and the cascade happens,i'll like some like that.
Well the resonance cascade is implied to only take place in Black Mesa, with most Xen wildlife in HL2 probably having been bought over by the Combine to make things all the more dangerous outside areas not under their control, it certainly fits their low maintenance, mostly hands off occupation of Earth in retail HL2. So the premise doesn't work.
@@peppermillers8361 Which could only have happened due to the Combine invasion of Earth (presumably the Combine invasion caused the portal storms somehow), since there's no way the government could even try to cover the Black Mesa incident up if the whole world's being infested. And that's assuming EVERY government tries to do it, and not just the United States. Which just isn't going to happen. And since the government tries to cover up the existence of the aliens in Half-Life (or more specifically, their part in bringing vicious alien wildlife to Earth in the first place) the resonance cascade happening anywhere but Black Mesa can't be the case.
@@DarthMcDoomington The portal storms and the resonance cascade are what attracted the Combine to earth. The only portal storm the Combine created was when they destroyed the citadel.
The HL2 Beta maps are very eerie and creepy, there are barely any npcs and if there are they are dead silent, The only sounds in the map are ambient noises and the whooshes by reddit users, only thing really cool about it are the weapons like combine guard gun and the npcs like combine guard and the combine assassins, and the return of houndeyes and bullsquids
Unlike the retail we all know until now, it's said that most of the plots of HL2 was meant to be completely dark before the leak incident, just like feelings of the Ravenholm. 😨😱😵
I think they're talking about the overall vibe of the Half-Life 2 Beta, as well as the concepts like the Air Exchange, Weather Control, and child slavery. (Though personally I think the suppression field is more dark than that.)
someone should recreate the original half liufe 2 ideas fully in the half life 2 engine, just to see what tehy were like. the main reason being that they werent bad ideas at all, hell, this idea in my opnion is amazing for a game to follow up on half life. i mean, look at what happened in half life! when they said the world went to hell that day, they meant it!

The retail version is considered lighthearted compared to this. HL2 Beta was pretty much 1984: the game
literally 1984
1984
that says a lot

america is just 1984
I will forever associate "HL2 BETA" with just walking around an empty city except for a few scripted sequences.
that was literally what it was since it was just a prototype, but even still i see so many people say "Hl2 beta is better than retail"

Dark Interval does a good way to prevent c17 from being a walking simulator by adding puzzles and Npcs to interact with
