  • This cyclist manages to do a wheelie across the 1.3 mile long Brooklyn Bridge. A major tourist attraction in New York City, cyclists commonly encounter pedestrians walking in the bike lane or taking photos. By announcing himself in advance, the cyclist makes his presence known and makes it across the bridge.

      @SpartasEdge 5 років тому +58

      Bikes are just as entitled to be on the road as cars are, cars don't OWN the roads! lol unless its a motorway of course . Historically, bikes have been around longer than cars, if you really want to go there, its cars that have come along since, so should respect the presence of something that was around before them, just like any decent road user respects horses and so forth, its all about basic respect, and at least bikes are not polluting the atmosphere, damaging the roads or creating noise.
      In the interests of fairness though, i will say that bikes have to and should obey the same rules of the road as everyone else, such as stopping at red lights etc.

      My take away as well. Don't blame humans for human nature, just make spaces that accommodate their nature. If the walkway is too small, and bikes are infrequent, pedestrians will walk in the bike lane. Instead of treating them like they're wrong for following their nature, just abide by their nature and widen the path.

    • @Ibnboulos
      @Ibnboulos 6 років тому +16

      Clinton Leonard do you think New York was formed through nature. Sure it was developed through and through with human nature involved but when it comes to a lawsuit because some brain dead guy didnt get out of the lain where a 70 pound vehicle is designated to go, problems arise for those that are in the only place that is allowed for them. It only starts to be an issue if someones health or money is at risk and as you can see a lot of the people dont even try to step out of the bike lane when this man comes.

      I have an issue with that all the time. Go for my morning walks and cyclist will come up behind me on the sidewalk and yell at me to get out of the way, in spite of there being a bike lane. I don't move for them. I point at the bike lane and tell them to get their ass in it.

When you blow the horn/ bell which I have both of, lol they just turn looked at you and continue their pose/selfie. I’m like really. So now what I do I wait just until I get about 2feet and blow my loudest horn. Lol you will think it’s a stampede. But I’ll do the Manhattan bridge any day where the lane is literally yours and, where is has one side for pedestrians and the other side for cyclists.

    You can see hundreds if not thousands of pedestrians on the bridge, and maybe 10 cyclists. It's not exactly surprising that pedestrians will expand out of their lane into the bike lane. Here in Seattle though, where cyclists go by every few seconds, nobody walks/stands in the bike lane because you'll get clobbered.

      I have absolutely no issue with people using the full width or the road, they abviouly are more in need of it than the number of cyclists at that traffic situation, BUT if a cyclist asks for his lane they step off it without any issues - if that happens I see absolutely no reason to make any problem about it.

    • @emissarygw2264
      @emissarygw2264 5 років тому +2

      I can definitely understand being annoyed when a lot of pedestrians don't even realize they should move, but I think again that comes down to the fact there are few cyclists around - awareness is a lot easier when you get reminded every few seconds.

    Bike lanes need better markings to deter ignorant pedestrians. In addition to marking it as a bike lane it would be good if there were markings stating " No pedestrians allowed " in the form of a person walking ,with a circle around the person and a red diagonal slash through the circle.

    • @g13flat

      Teeon Highhill The barrier doesn't need to be as wide as the line painted on the bridge, as long as there is a physical divide between the two together with the warnings at either end it could work.

      That's just the thing. People will complain about cyclists or some cyclists being 'entitled' for space designated SPECIFICALLY for cyclists when peds regularly break the law of 'obstructing traffic' walking moronically for no reasonable cause in a bikeway whether as part of the road or other.
      Yes, fair enough if a cyclist crosses on a red light with heavy cross traffic -- I'd consider that entitlement and reckless. However, allowing cyclists to simply go STRAIGHT on a road with a space specifically for cyclists with no necessary obstructions isn't entitlement on the cyclist's part at all! Motorists only regularly have to deal with peds at intersections. Cyclists on the other hand must deal with peds nearly every few feet mid-block in addition to intersections and in addition to motorists who have deeply ingrained car culture in their heads.

    • @lightdark00
      @lightdark00 6 років тому

      Around here where bike lanes are just painted on the road, you get joggers/runners that like the road better(there's a sidewalk), and at intersections those going right block off the bike lane entirely.

    I don't know how to feel about those parents pushing the baby's pushchair in the bike lane. I get that they wouldn't get very far very quickly if using the pedestrian side as it's so densely populated, but one hit to the pushchair from an oncoming cyclists and that baby could be dead. Seems like a horrible bridge in general.

    • @davey1577
      @davey1577 6 років тому +3

      Bithor Gaming
      I believe it's a horrible bridge due to it being narrow, well populated, and has obstructions in the form of metal bollards/pillars/lampposts in and out of the bike lane that have to be avoided. I also said that there was an element of risk in using the bike lane for pushchairs, but acknowledged the potential reasons for doing so. I didn't change any 'argument'; the two points coexist. I'm saying that both the bridge and actions are questionable; rather than just blaming lack of common sense.
