Not going to compare it against the X as the X is a luxury phone and the 8 is just as modern but without the added luxury.
With inflation, that's about the same price. So iPhones haven't inherently gotten more expensive throughout the years, but I guess the latest batch of iPhones, the XS and XR, are the most expensive yet.
