Following Seas -- Better Fishing and Gilded Gloat Boat

  • Small update this week, but still some new things to show.
    Fishing always seems to be a major part of any game with boats. While it was functional, I felt there was a lot of room for improvement, so I've iterated on the system in a number of ways.
    I've added some progressive damping to the camera, so that it's easier to keep an eye on the water during extreme angles, along with visual improvements to line placement, and the position of the rod.
    I have also substantially overhauled the behavior of the fish, to allow for a more engaging fight, with diving and more aggressive movements.
    I've started on a loot system, where provision items can be found in the world, and added to your ship stores. This is still pretty early, but you can get an idea of how this is going to work.
    Lastly, another ship that has been absent for a few videos.
    The Saettia.
    A lot of changes have gone into her, and there's a lot of work to do yet. I wasn't happy with the previous model -- I want the largest ships in Following seas to be multi decked ships, so I've increased the draft by about 50 percent to allow for two enclosed decks. I have also rebuilt the stern to be more ornate, and retextured most of the hull. I expect technical progress to be somewhat slow on this ship, as I am currently focusing on getting the smaller core ships fully functional to prevent getting stuck in constant refactoring of tons of hulls every time I make a tech change -- but I've had some questions about this ship -- so I wanted to show a brief update.

    A crew and the interactions, stories etc would also be great, in due time of course but hiring, firing them and having their skill be a real effect on the ship would also be excellent.

    Good lord, this game is gorgeous. This is right now one of the main reasons I am planning to upgrade my pc. I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to this!

      Thank you. Always room for optimization, but currently it doesn't need too much. Target system is equivalent to a steam deck, but moving up to 1440 will need a bit more

      @@2eightnine I'm currently on a very old 1050 ti and an i3, so I need an upgrade anyway. They don't even meet minimum specs for most new games nowadays. I couldn't see my rig running this without spontaneously combusting!

      I mean, right now it's a bunch of reversed normals and see through polys -- so you aren't missing much.

    Is it common for lateen rigged ships to have shrouds on only one side? I'm not overly familiar but it seems odd. Love seeing more sailing games, hope development continues smoothly

      Thanks for the comment. :) To be honest it's more of a concession for reliability. Proper double shrouds either result in a ton of clipping, or too much difficulty with bunching and collision in the sails. For gameplay simplicity I don't want to simulate the painstaking process of tying up the sail and moving it outside the shrouds each tack.

      @@2eightnine That's fair, lateens are known for that extra complexity, and I looked it up and did see some ships with only one set of shrouds. Shrouds or no, it's still one of the best depictions of a sailing ship in a game I've seen
