  • Yes I know. Lightmode. The horror.
    Based on a couple comments I got, I would like to clear up a bit how the sailing system works.
    I've locked the hull in place for this, so that's why were not moving.
    In some similar games, the control of the sails is fairly rigid, meaning, if you control the position of the sail at all, it's a matter of rotating the sail or yard until it's positioned optimally to the wind and your done. Please don't take this as critisism towards these games -- I am just looking to build a system that feels a little different.
    In this game you have both more and in some ways less control, as you must control the ropes and lines rather than the larger parts of the rigging. The position of the yards for example, can not be controlled directly by the player. Instead, the center mass of the sails will attempt to align themselves with the force of the wind, assuming that there is enough slack in the ropes to allow this.
    Also something other than lateen sails are in the works.

    Great as always!
    This kind of sail control is exactly what I miss in many other simulations so far.
    It's the way I trim the sails in reality.

      Thank you, very much appreciated. I aim for a degree of realism, but while I've spent a lot of time around ships and boats, I've never actually sailed.

    Fantastic work. You are very productive. I'm always torn with how much feedback to give you. I'm an out of work game designer with a couple titles released (none related to sailing). However, I have raced sailboats for years and lived on a sailboat for 5 years. I'm excited to see you including a junk rig. This should make square rigs easy to add, once you have junks sorted. Did you ever play the very old pc game Taipan?

      Thank you, much appreciated. I of course welcome any feedback, even (or especially) constructive criticism. I've spent many years around boats, but have never actually sailed, so I lack a lot of the know how from practical experience. Never actually heard of Taipan -- I adore the look of old games like that. The games that made me want to build a game like this was (despite its faults) City of Abandoned Ships, and more recently the wonderful Sailwind -- which I play occasionally, but just happen to bear a strong dislike of the survival mechanics.

      Hi thanks for the comment. At this point I intend to pursue Steam early access, hopefully somewhere in 2024 but we shall see.

      I like Sailwind, but you're ship models are absolutely stunning! Hoping you're able to make headway on bringing this project to fruition. I can't wait to invest in this world you're building! @@2eightnine
