I got my shiny Totodile on VC Crystal from this guide while I have been hunting for Arceus on BDSP for about a week or two… I believe I got mine in ~300 SRs on day 2. I also noticed that the HP val for shiny totodile never changed when it came to other peoples hunts. Thank you greatly.
I literally started my hunt yesterday and few SRs after this tutorial I got my Totodile at 151 SRs lol thank you for the tutorial! Had no idea about the HP stat so that saved me some seconds for sure :]

Im using my Gameboy colour that i got as a child about 11 or 12 years ago, my mom bought it somewhere and now as an adult i was able to repair it and get a fresh copy of Pokémon gold (unfortunately it is not original because original copies work out to be quite expensive with the currency exchange rate) and these optimizations are really helping so thank you. A word of advice to anyone who wants to repair a Gameboy color, if you're able to, try and replace the screen with one thats backlit.

I watched your optimal shiny hunting method for chikorita and you said that it could have 19 or 20 whereas in this video you stated it could only be 20. Hey, thanks for the question! So, all Pokémon are going to have different values that you're looking for based on their base stats. All three starters have different HP values which correspond to having the shiny DVs. If you're hunting Totodile, you only have to check males with 20 HP. For Chikorita, you need to check males with 19 OR 20 since Chikorita has naturally lower HP than Totodile
actually it's not optimal to check for the gender. yes, you do save about 26 seconds, but roughly once every 8 times if you choose to not give a nickname you save about 10 seconds, everytime. so if i SR 80 times and check the gender everytime, it would take me about 57mins but if i choose to skip giving nickname it would only take me about 48mins for 80SR's Time for 1 SoftReset when checking for the gender: ♂️46 seconds, you SR at the summary screen ♀️20seconds, you SR at the nickname screen 7/8 ♂️ = 7×46sec = 322sec + 1/8♀️ = 1×20sec = 20sec = 342sec. doing that 10× would be ~57min (from 80SR's 10 are female) Time for 1 SoftReset when not checking the gender: =36seconds. doing that 80 times would be ~48min so yea. its better to not check the gender if you want to safe roughly 15HRS in the end (1 in 8192 chance for a shiny in this gen)
What a bummer ⅞ male pokémon can't have female shinies in GSC, does the same happen for pokémon with a ¾ gender ratio? Also concerning 2:13, I checked on my physical game and you can press start to skip to the end too, maybe X is mapped to start for virtual console?
Other gender ratios have their shiny odds affected when breeding, but not when encountered in the wild. For example, Miltank is 1/8,192 in the wild, but as high as 1/64 when breeding. I believe 7/8 male is the only ratio where one particular gender can't be shiny. I believe you're right, since X also opens the menu iirc
I think I'm at my 30 reset by now, I lost count already. This is my first ever shiny hunt for a starter and now I understand it feels to hunt for a starter. Besides the Totodile being Level 5 always, needs to be male and HP at 20 to be shiny. I am getting hp 20 and being male but it does not appear shiny. Does the attack and defense could also help at knowing the odds? Because I'm using Gold right now, crystal I need to replace the memory battery later.
Just because it's male and has an HP of 20, doesn't mean that it's going to be shiny. That's just part of what you need, but the other stats need to line up, too. The odds that you get a shiny on any given reset are 1/8,192
Wouldn't the actual optimal way to do it by breeding it with the Red Gyrados, as I beileve they are in the same egg group or if not breed the Gyrados with something that is in its egg group and totoadiles egg group, till you hatch a shiny male of that Pokemon in totoadiles egg group? Then use that shiny pokemon with the shiny dvs and breed with a female totodile or use a shiny ditto of your lucky enough to get one? As the odds are even lower than modern day mesuda method?
Do you know the specific stats for the shiny totodile? I’ve been trying to find a specific answer but there’s been some with 13 attack and others with 12, and I don’t know if that’s a thing. If anyone could help out that would be appreciated. Thank you!

There's quite a range and not just one specific answer, since the attack DV can be one of 8 different values and still yield a shiny
