    My mam was born in 1930 and lived in pierson street, knocked down to build a66! She told us lots of tales of growing up and things that went on. A little girl who was about 5 drowned in the stream, she said it was tidal, her hat blew in and she fell in when she reached down for itm she told us about how the little kids were luck outs for the local Bobby to warn the lads he was coming who were playing pitch and toss in the streets. Of how they would play marbles in the cobbled streets, and everyone would go in the ladies house down the street who played piano for a sing song! She was evacuated with lots of other kids from lawson school during the war to Lastingham, near Hutton le hole. Lots of lovely memories from there too. I could go on and on with the things she used to tell us.... Happy memories! Rest in peace mam, love and miss you so so much!

    Stephen, I must congratulate you on the musical accompaniment; always beautifully low-key and appropriate. Thank you!

    The Victorians had it nailed; glorious buildings with character. Now every building looks immediately dated without any character.

      I have to agree, what might have looked nice, shiny and modern 40 years ago today looks tatty and dated today. Whereas well maintained Victorian or Edwardian buildings retain their character and show the optimism and ambition our small town once had.

      Yes, interesting how the benefactors of benign Capitalism built towns with pride, quality and class only to have them destroyed by the new Socialist Utopian 'visionaries'. How lucky we were to see them... but how far we have fallen since then in a short 60 years or so. Tragedy!

    The amount of architecture we've lost in this town is depressing.

    I do lament the 'going' of Wright's Tower House. Less imposing now, sadly. Great video Stephen... thank you!

      Thank you, I'm glad you liked it, Tower House was a lovely building with character, surely it could have been re-used the same way that the old Forbes Bakery was ?

    I have only recently become aware of your many wonderful videos. Now I have lived in the South East for over 40 years and much of Middlesbrough is totally unrecognisable. Middlesbrough is a Victorian New Town, or was, most is now modern low quality replacement. I particularly liked your Pubs now Missing. Middlesbrough was dominated by the Council Estates and it is only when moving south that you realised how dominant the Council Estates were. Could you also show all the Schools that have gone?

      Thank you Trevor, the missing schools is a good idea and one I'll definitely gear in mind.

    The planners over the years have well and truly destroyed Middlesbrough took away some beautiful buildings and replaced them with motorways and car parks

    • @BigMack1959
      @BigMack1959  4 роки тому +1

      Sadly Andrew the same can be said of many towns in the UK, there should've been a different solution to the rise in ownership of cars.

    Good buildings being destroyed? No progress but for money.
