I love the old pic of Middlesbrough. The buildings had so much character.
Ironopolis: Middlesbrough, built with love and care by the Victorians... destroyed with vigour by post-war paid Vandals. Your good work is keeping many of the images alive still Stephen... thank you!
Thank you Ken.
My home town revised a few weeks before Christmas was a sad experience. So many changes and few for the better. Stockton is having an extensive re branding on top of previous hideous makeovers . someone is making a fast buck no doubt.
Thank you for making me realise that my town had a history better than i imagined
You're welcome Leilani, thank you for this nice comment as my reason for making these videos is to show in the simplest way the changes in our town especially for younger people who had never seen some of these buildings.
Poor old Middlesbrough, my family originated from there. From Cargo Fleet. Moved to Nunthorpe then up to Billsdale. Remember watching Middlesbrough play at Ayrsome Park.
Would love to have felt nostalgic after that, but am thoroughly depressed at the vandalism that has happened to my home town...
Sorry that my my video made you feel that way but the camera doesn't lie :-(
The royal exchange building could have been saved, the A66 flyover could have been built further back toward the dock area, mbro' council have vandalised most of the town. nice pic's & memory jogger though,
I could not agree more, there are no photos on any of these series of videos that show Boro better than it was. Some beautiful buildings demolished, the whole character of the place has been removed. Criminal.
Aw i do love Boro
So many fantastic buildings gone mostly replaced with car parks shocking however thankyou for taking me down memory lane
You are very welcome Lee, i guess these changes have happened in many towns across the country over the decades but when it happens to our town the changes are more personal.
My Wife’s from Scarborough, she’s always amazed by the amount of beautiful buildings we’ve lost in Boro. We have a grim running joke, that if there’s a beautiful old building anywhere in Middlesbrough, it’s only a matter of time before the council notice it, and replace it with a bleak glass and steel monstrosity.
It certainly seems that way doesn't it ?
Thanks for that, I have no connection to the town but this is typical of the vandalism which has been obvious across our country. I live in Aylesbury and we have suffered the same and it still continue today, so sad!!!!
In the '60's there seemed to be a a backlash against Victorian architecture and a drive by local councils to replace them with modern buildings with no character which have ironically aged worse than the buildings they replaced. I'm sorry to hear that Aylesbury has lost as much of it's history as Middlesbrough has.
This is a real treat for me seeing these brilliant videos of my birth town. Great work, sir.
Thanks JohnPaul, I'm happy that your enjoying my videos.
@@BigMack1959 ... I am Stephen, very much so. I was born in Willow Street in 1960, not sure if it still stands, then moved to Deepdale Avenue in Grove Hill when I was barely a toddler. Went to St.Joseph's infants and juniors then onto St.George's in Acklam. I left the town in 1983 and moved to Bedford where I am still. It's been emotional viewing all the footage.
JohnPaul I'm a year older than you but stayed in the area and a few years ago decided to make the Then & Now videos so that people like yourself who moved out of the area and younger people like my kids who never saw "old" Middlesbrough have the opportunity to see the how the area has changed over the decades.
@@BigMack1959 ... And i for one am very grateful, you've brought a tear to my eye, lol. You've captured The Boro in its essence.
@@popazz1 thanks for those kind words, it's nice to know my videos are appreciated.
Outstanding Stephen! Thank you!
Thank you minceandgravy1953, I'm hoping that by posting these videos here it'll keep the memory of old Middlesbrough alive.
Happier days then
Hi Stephen do you remember Romar Parishes the Toy shop on Linthorpe rd..My brother & I would sit there for hrs watching the trains back in the 60s...Once in a blue moon, my father would treat us & go in...Wonderful memories..Thank you
Yes Marc I remember it well, I seem to recall the had a working model of the Transporter made from Meccano as a window display. I'm happy you're enjoying the videos.
I love these now and then videos and you have done a fantastic job of the editing and getting it exactly right. Thank you so much for this series Stephen x
Thank you, I have a few more planned but it's getting the time to make the videos that's the problem.
Love you channel Stephen!
Thank you Dave 👍
Absolute recoil watching what the Hugh Bell School morphed into!
That's understandable Simon, an impressive piece of local architecture turns into a concrete cube.
Shame that they demolished the Royal Exchange building to make way for the A66 flyover.
Yes, it was an impressive building which due to neglect was in a very poor condition before it was demolished.
Excellent job Stephen, once again thank you.
Thank you Pam I'm glad you like it.
Kin terms of uniqueness of character and architecture. Nothing in this town has even remotely changed for the better. Hum drum and dystopian us two words that come to mind.
Ant p retired uk Teacher
Wish someone had some footage of bertram ramsey school or pictures loved my years there however thankyou for that fantastic stroll down memory lane
Hi Lee, sorry but I don't have pictures of that school but I'm glad you enjoyed what was here.

Sad to see what they did to Boro , did the same to my city , Portsmouth to.
It's happened in many towns and cities in the UK.

The first before and after is heart breaking! What are you doing M’boro council!? What a disgrace!
North riding hospital I thought was a registered building ...Sadly another part of our heritage gone forever...
The big Wesley church had a lot of steps you showed the picture of the Avenue Methodist the avenue Linthorpe
