I came upon your videos as a writer. Part of the story I am working on at the moment is set in North Ormesby in the years following the Great War. Your work is very helpful and inspiring. What counts is not just facts, images and objects, but the complex of meanings they bring to the fore and continue to generate, and you have your finger on the button, alright. My Grandmother was Mrs Leopard, she owned houses in Cannon Street and Calthorpe St. which she rented out. I can remember going to collect the rents with her on a Friday. My Great Grandfather ran the Royal Oak, on Dacre Street, in the 1800's
We lived in King George St. by the Newport Bridge. We were as kids, safe as houses. Lovely People, hearts of gold. Pitchers and Gollogly’s we lived at Nr 8 and my great Nana lived at Nr17. 1959 we moved to Guisborough.
My grandad lived at number 5 canon street about 1905 and great grandad had an allotment I think it was just over the river and he let gipsies put their Van's on it. One of the gipsies was a horse trader who purchased ponies for the mines and the other gipsy had a pickles business. Grandad often went to Stockton railway station with the gipsies to collect the ponies then they would walk them along the wilderness road through the night and keep them in the allotment area until next morning . Next Mr ing was Sunday and the ponies had to be walked to Eston . The route they took was up Marton rd and they would have gone along the trunk rd which was a toll rd owned by the church and was closed on Sunday so they had to go further up and along ladgate lane. He told me the ponies were paid for following inspection with gold sovereigns. He said it was the first time he and got grandad had seen gold. I hope the details are correct I can only reflect on what grandad told me.

I'm not associated with Cannon Street, I was raised in Grove Hill from 18960/1 until leaving the Boro in 1983, but as I've been viewing archive footage, here and on Facebook, in the last couple of weeks so many memories have come flooding back, most of them happy. It's a joy to see how so many former residents of this area of the Boro have come together to share their recollections. Long may it continue.
You wouldn't recognize the Boro now. Looks like Mogadishu now. Government uses it as a dumping ground for immigrants. We've been invaded thanks to treacherous politians..
@@dandixon7400 To be honest, Dan, I couldn't tell you. My Dad was John Robert and he had brothers named Arthur,(George), and David. There was also Joseph but he was lost at sea when the ship he was on was torpedoed in WW2. I think maybe my paternal grandparents were from over the border but I couldn't swear to it.🙂
As folk who lived outside the boro about 9 miles away in a small market town, we were often warned if we were planning on going down boro for a night out , dont go near cannon street you wont be seen again if you do, it had a reputation for villainy and toughness ( wether warranted or not l still dont know to this day lol ) so of course we would have a look, early summer you got stared at straight away, kids on bikes would follow you, depending on how many of us there were usually about 6, say if just 2 sometimes some lads would come up and warn us we would get our heads kicked in lol, we never did tho, later we would meet some of the lasses in boro pubs and get to know em. Great place great days, they calked us wooly backs and we called em townys, mostly affectionately. 😂
I knew Tom Cronin and his son John, also the Hall family Geordie and Fred, all came from Cannon Street, I was demolishing Gjeers Mills Blast furnaces in 1966, used to cycle up to Newbold's butchers on Newport road for pies every dinnertime for the lads on site, working for TW Wards demolition at the time some of cannon Street was getting demolished then
Absolutely brilliant video I was born at 14 Glebe Road I would love to see a old photo of the street as there's a park there now myself and my siblings were baptised at St Patrick's RC Church. My parents left middlesbrough in 1964 to live in newcastle if anyone has any photos or memories of Glebe Road I would be very grateful 😊
This is fantastic! My mother and her ancestors came from there and had a store on the corner of Cannon St. Thanks for doing this. My cousin is an oral historian who was hired to speak to the people who lived in London before Canary Wharf was built. Beverley Anne Batten Simpson.

Just played this to my mam who's 80 and now lives in Redcar. Mam did live in Harford Street near Ayesome Park. She remembers so much of what your video shows. You've made an old woman very happy.

We lived on Lowe Street and my mam use to put me outside in my pram and my brother swopped me for a davey crocket hat my mam was running around the streets trying to find me then the boys mother brought me back
“It was poor but not a rough area” well I’ve heard plenty of stories of the Cannon street riots around early 60s if I’m not mistaken. People of the area rioted, forcing mobs to get anyone of colour and immigrants. All true and all in the archives. Bunch of people who didn’t like change, but change got them, wiping the area away. I love the history and old architecture of this town but history like that is ugly, and it’s not only this town with it’s dark history.
I have family from here some of the hardest lads you would meet,im now a best selling Author bringing out best selling books on the hardest men to walk on teesside guys xx
I was born in 68, not from that part of Boro but everyone from Middlesbrough knows about Cannon Park. Great film, gave me goosies watching it 👌 😢👍

Jack knaggs was a family friend and was what i would call an old school working class gentleman . Im honoured to have known him .
My ancestors moved from norfolk 1880s, lived in cannon St for about 25 years worked in the iron foundries, Elmers and Kents,
My ancestors too came from Norfolk to cannon Street, working in the iron works - the Tolliday family.

My relative Patrick Hand had a shop on Cannon Street in the 1920s, but he always referred to his occupation as shoemaker!
