The Provider (May 2021) for Choral and string orchestra ensemble
This piece
is based on the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac when God tells Abraham to sacrifice his son
Isaac. Being obedient to his God , he takes Issac and prepares him to be sacrificed. He ties him
up and puts him on the altar, and Isaac is obedient to his father. Right before Abraham is about
to strike his son, a voice speaks to him and tells him to stop, and when Abraham look around ,
he sees a ram caught in a thicket by its horns and he takes the ram and sacrifices him instead
of his son.
While composing this piece , I was in the middle of a crisis dealing with financial problems
where I didn’t know how me and my mother was going to pay our bills with rent and etc. I was
then lead by the Spirit to play and came up with a melody that has stuck with me till this day. My
goal for this piece is not only the listener to be reminded of the name of the altar Abraham
made ,“Jehovah Jireh” which mean the lord who provides, but to feel the heart of the essences
of the encounter Abraham had with God, which is one of the many symbols of what Jesus did
for us on the cross, for he is the ram that was stuck in the bush. He is our substitute for our just punishment.
