"Courage: The Sword of the Lord" is a fully orchestrated three-movement composition that narrates the Biblical story of Gideon, (Judges 6) who transforms from a figure of fear and doubt to a courageous leader chosen by God to save the Israelites from the Midianites.
The first movement, "Fear and Doubt," employs winds and strings to depict Gideon’s anxiety and his divine calling through an encounter with the Angel of the Lord. The music evolves from a melancholic reflection of Gideon’s struggles to a hopeful resolution, symbolizing his growing confidence in God's promise despite his fears.
The second movement, "Destroying the Altar," illustrates Gideon's internal conflict as he obeys God's command to dismantle his father's altar to Baal under the cover of night, highlighting the bravery required to act against societal norms.
The final movement “Worship and Battle”, captures the climactic battle against the Midianites, marked by themes of worship, divine instruction, and the reversal of fear as Gideon’s enemies confront their own terror. Together, these movements emphasize the journey from anxiety to faith, reminding listeners of the strength found in The Lord and the importance of standing firm in one’s convictions.
“I find the story of Gideon to be very encouraging, as I find myself many times struggling with fear and all of the different types of it . In particular, fear of doing things that I know is right in the sight of The Lord Christ but wrong with the world. Reading Scripture about Gideon reminds me that there will be times of uncertainty following after his way and the road paved by him , but just as the horse is uncertain on where he is going , he knows the one who he belongs too , and just as how so many things can confuse and often turns in to doubt and ultimately fear, we must remember who holds the strains of the universe , remember who goes before us as our defender , provider , and rescuer. This is why out of all the parts of these movements, the ending part of movement one is my favorite, because this is where Gideon is revealed these things and remember of the God of his ancestors who they worship.”
