- In scads of self-help books and a ton of TED talks, grit is presented as the golden key to happiness and success. But what if we've had it all wrong? What if the secret to a better life -- and a better world -- isn't perseverance but a pause and a pivot? Join Dr. Julia Keller as she explores the cultural history of our negative view of quitting, and how -- paradoxically -- the road to a more just and tolerant world runs through surrender, not resolve.
Julia Keller, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, novelist, and screenwriter, is the author of an eight-volume mystery series, a three-volume science fiction series, as well as co-writer of the screenplay for the feature film "Spider & Jessie." Recipient of a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, she has taught at Princeton University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Notre Dame. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Sometimes quitting is more scary than continuing on even when you know you are in the wrong track.
Give us examle I didn’t get the idea
@@Zohra-lu5tg like for example quitting a marriage exp if you have kids. You might know it's the right thing to do but it's so scary that many people will hang in there
@Alexandre-sz2jb stop your spam, reported.
It’s important to note that she’s not saying just to quit. She’s also saying that sometimes you need to stop doing something you’re doing, for your own sanity. That can mean taking a break from it. That can mean keeping going.. but doing a certain task differently, so you quit an old task.
This video came to me like magic. Ive been thinking about quiting my job for months but the fear of not having a way to survive is stopping me.
And watching this I was thinking about all the moments people told me that "you need to last at least a year in a job to be taken seriously as a professional". But in my opinion, if we all quit what we consider not rewarding enough (like my company, which is super toxic), people's needs would be valued more and as Julia says, there could be more justice and respect, without people who take advantage of others who hang in bad situations because of fear or need
You are not alone.
I feel like an outcast in a place where the environment is toxic and the energy is spent.
I know what you mean, I took a step back from a toxic workplace and glad I did so... I took 2 weeks off to reflect, learn from my mistakes and others and thank God found something better and feel fresh again.
Grit is necessary for success most of the time, but it's helpful to know when you're putting too much energy into the wrong direction. You could dedicate your life to building a barrier to keep the tide back, but the ocean is going to win every time unless you have a truly massive amount of resources and thousands of other people with the same goal and dedication. I hate quitting, but once I was doing a teaching position where I was pouring all of myself into my work for a tiny bit of money, but almost all of the kids were not interested in participating in class and the administration and parents were all over my back, so I quit and I was glad I did.
same here, quitting teaching
The greatest inspiration you can derive is from your inner self and from a heart that knows you are on the right path.
Absolutely!
It is time someone told everyone in this country that times have changed and that we all need to revise our outdated views on personal success.
That was awsome! Yes, "when summat doesnt feel right, you have the right ro quit". Oh yes.
I quit too late amd burned both my brain and self esteem. She has very true advice
Great video! Follow your intuition and get out of toxic situations!
I recommend this video to anyone out there.
This is the dopest video alive.
This is very, very good. This talk helps me immensely to make a desision about what to do next. Thank you from my heart.
I had aspirations of going to a prestigious music institute as a bass player and eventually becoming head of a music department. Long story short, school just wasn't and isn't for me. That and the fact that my skill set didn't justify me going to school for it. Someone would say that I "gave up" but I have a pretty decent job now and I'm cool with that.
@Alexandre-sz2jb I appreciate the kind gesture but I'm agnostic. So I'll pass.
Beautiful presentation, thank you so much 💖
Getting where we want to go by other means, i love that. Because god forbid our different unique lives show others that we all can’t possibly pursue the same over-trodden path to the same dreams

Thank you. Your words made me think and came at a good time.
Great presentation. Thank you.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Exactly what I’m experiencing in my life now! I arrived to exact same conclusion, recently. Thank you for the nice talk.
quitting as strategic manoeuvre I like this 🎉
Good minutes spent🎉 ❤
Thanks Mrs. Keller
Good talk, it helps quiters quit course, not goals, though.😀
As an American I have to point out that that is such an American way of thinking. I get it, but I think it’s a little more complicated than that.
Giving up is sometimes the healthier option because it frees us to pursue other, better suited but overlooked goals.
Quitting when things are difficult is probably not the best choice, but a wise person knows when their time and energy is best spent on other things.
@TElmgren a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.this means that there have to be some challenges.correcting directions, changing tactics in order to reach goals (objective ones)is the right thing to do. quiting isn't the right word l think🧐👍
Thank you for interesting talk that we have need to hear theme of to this nature❤🌏🫠
At this moment of mourning my young son's loss, i feel guilty that he should have opened out his feelings, an Asian in an American soil, unable to quit despite economic independence.
Fantastic talk, Julia! 🖤
I Interpret Anti quit bias as driven by the economical growth agenda by powers that be. Growth and speed at any cost, even your life. I quit their agenda years ago, decided to reset my agendas to fit me, and now my life is serene, peaceful and still financially abundantly sufficient.
What exactly did you do, if I may ask?
@@ElliBeenie I had an awakening of sorts and later I read an old book by Robert Ringer “Looking Out For #1” which has a title that is misleading. It has a great philosophy on living one own’s life without harming anyone but not being controlled by an agenda that I disagree with. The other powerful moment happened almost 23 years ago in an Al Anon group when I discovered the power of surrendering taught in the 12 steps. Hope this helps.
I can’t even quit reading a book I don’t like and I don’t know why! Maybe it’s the Finish what you start Intellect or the Clean your plate syndrome. I’m almost 70. I don’t have to eat my peas! And I don’t have time to finish things that do not bring me joy or a sense of fulfillment!
Very inspiring since l am wondering to reset my career path ❤
impressed! great speech!
Great speach ❤
إذا لم تستطع شيئا فدعه
وجاوزه إلى ما تستطيع
amazing
I want to like this talk. I agree quitting isn't a bad thing in many instances. But she gives very little explanation or reasoning as to why. It's mostly her saying animals know when, films and books say not to, but doesn't really explain why the books and films are sending the wrong message. I feel it is an important message but for those who are in place with people around them that are finding hard to make that decision need why's, not just is can be good
Great perspective
Good opinion, thank you so much...
I quit my job after watching this video. Now what?
@Alexandre-sz2jb lol
Brilliant! 🤓
this was a great speech, but it could've been more inspiring if she provided examples of her statement
thank you so much for the video really l'm enjoy in the video
l hope watch part second inchalah
Quitting while you're ahead is not the same as quitting - Chinese General in American Gangster
Sometimes you have to quit to realise your doing it wrong
Annuals 🌿 give up every year, sacrificing themselves to our salads 🥗. Carnivores have so much compassion for them that they bury them instead of eat them
The Taoist principle of Wu Wei.
It's never too late to give up 😂
I was going to watch this. But I decided to quit it. That’s enough.
❤❤❤
Only wise person has courage to quit, because they always have plan B.
You have to be in sync with your body. Quitting is a personal decision based on your body signals. Asian culture and philosophies are far more superior then west, as quitting is a spiritual process according to many Asian cultures.
I was going to write a really good comment but I just gave up.
Nice choice, nice choice 😊
Mayo didn't quit because he didn't have anything else to believe in, not even himself.
Just wanna know how to get the offer to speak out there
You mean in a TEDx talk?

The 60's baby bommer geenration had some incentive not to be quitters. They had pension. Quitting is a natural instinct. There is only a limited amount of energy in our body to invest. Our body gives lot os clues which we are unfortunately trained to ignore. You don't need a scientist to tell this. We need to balance Energy expenditure Vs our need to survive.

Says a quitter
Yes. She stopped, took a break and then went on and did her PhD , just in a place and a time that suited her best. She didn't just quit and just gave up, she did a manoeuvre to do it in a way that didn't make her miserable. And you hardly call someone with a PhD 'a quitter' at the end of the day.
