The Original Cylinder Arm Sewing Machine for Leather Workers and Leathercraft.
Viadango
Welcome to Viadango. In this video I will be reviewing the “Original Cylinder” arm for leather work that Singer sold called the 153W103. The video covers how much leather you can potentially sew, various things to look for when buying a machine like this on the use market, and other resources for obtaining parts and directions.
Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe for more Sewing Machine videos!

When going back a few stitches for locking the stitch, you either can go back one stitch at a time or go back several stitches and then cut the long stitch back. Do not back tack with a leather needle, it cuts the thread. A leather needle has knife edges to cut leather and a fabric needle has a round point/egg point to push between the fabric seams and does not cut the thread on a back tack to lock the stitch.
True, leather point needle will cut the thread. That's why I always use round point fabric needles 135×17
I am in the process of setting up this machine now! Nice to see such a current video on this- thank you!
Thank you! I have a 153W103 that is bound up. That’s the best way I can describe it. It will only spend about 3/4 of a turn at the fly wheel on the machine.
It is always hard to know exactly where the binding up is taking place. We use wd-40, and also hair dryers to get stuff unfrozen. I would start in the hook area and move up towards the take up arm assembly .
Mine had the same problem and fixed it by adjusting the needle bar because mine was way of and it will turn 3/4, the top of the needle bar was hitting the body of the machine.
Thanks! Your feed-dog is not shot, you have a special feed-dog and end-plate for sewing in tight spots like the nose of leather bicycle saddles and old motorcycle pan style seats. I have been looking for a feed-dog and end-plate like yours with no luck for quite some time. I would be interested in your parts if you convert over to a larger feed-dog and end-plate. You just cannot change your feed-dog only, you have to do a conversion. Take care!
OMG. This is why I love UA-cam. I started to realize this as well about the feed-dog, but I had not researched it yet. I just knew that it was very different than the one in the manual, but I did not know exactly why.
Hello. I was lucky enough to purchase one of these machines this summer. I just completed replacing the original motor with a servo. Would it be possible for you to make a video on how to properly thread the machine? It would be a tremendous help. Thank you
The reason you have to change the stitch length like directed on your cover plate is because the original stitch length adjustment shaft became too brittle over the years and breaks. The original stitch length adjustment shaft is located in the center of your hand-wheel and it breaks, it can be pounded in all the way and then the stitch can be adjusted like directed on your cover plate.
Yes, you are right and I suspected this was the case all along. I still need to take a closer look at the set up. Do you think my parts could be duplicated to fit your machine?
The parts cannot be duplicated easily. I have looked through all of Singers, Consew cylinder arm parts with no luck. The parts probably were made for a Singer 153-SV or 47 -SV model and transferred over to your machine.
❤Amazing sewing mechine
Can you post a video of how to adjust the stitch length please. I can't figure out by my self 😅
did you make the top plate? i've never seen the vintage machine with holes for mounting newer attachments.
I’m trying to figure the top thread, bobbin thread, and needle size for my 153w102 & 103 - the 102 does not seem to work with industrial needles- any advice? thank you!
. Qual valor dela? . Tem no Brasil?
Great video!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Any videos on how to thread this machine. I think I did it right but now the bottom thread won’t come up and I can’t see anything pls help
Make sure you are threading the needle correctly, or if the needle is in position correctly. I believe there is a PDF version of the instructions online. I have not used mine recently, but I recall the thread going from the left through the needle to the right. Not picking up the bottom thread could also be a loading issue in the lower shuttle. I will consider making a video of threading soon if you can't resolve.
Saludos, donde puedo conseguir los repuestos
What needle do you run in your machine? I just picked up and earlier model and am having trouble finding a needle size
Nice Video
Thanks
Nice
Thanks
Very informative video. Where did you find that manual? Im looking to purchase one of these machines but would like to locate the manual first. I'd even be willing to pay for the manual online or even pay you a small fee if you would share yours. Thanks.
The manual is a reprint pdf file that I got off of the internet. There are some sites that will sell these manuals. If you look around, you might find one you can simply download. If you want a hard copy, people do sell reprinted hard copies on Ebay.
@@viadango I'll take another stab at it. First time around searching online really didn't turn up anything.
How much price
where did you get your smooth feet?
Awesome
Thanks.
