Affordable Leather Sewing Machine
This is a review of the TuffSew, AKA: Thompson Walking Foot Sewing Machine. I was not paid for this review and this is done purely for information purposes around these machines. I made a complex leather bag project with the machine, plus go over the accessories on the market for these machines and the various names they are often marketed under.
TuffSew's website can be found here: tuffsew.com/
Leather sewing machines come in all shapes, sizes and prices and this machine is more affordable than most. However, that affordability means that might not be as powerful or have the same presser foot clearance, or even harp space. Even so, depending upon your needs they can be a great option so therefore the machine is absolutely worthy of consideration.
The TuffSew is a portable walking foot sewing machine that has a small speed reducer that has a belt system that attaches to a bolt on domestic sewing machine 1.5 amp motor.

Crazy Upcycle Ideas

Straight up, this is one crazy upcycle leather messenger bag project. In this short video I take you behind the scenes into the construction of a leather messenger bag using unique upcycled items such as an old Ohio License plate from 1969, a 1950 Mercury Hood Ornament, various vintage materials and upcycled denim jeans. The goal of this project was to create a radical messenger bag that had al...
Long Arm Quilting on Leather

I had an incredible chance to actually quilt on leather using the Innova Long Arm Sewing Machine. Jim is a sales representative for the Innova Long Arm Quilting Machines out of Yuba City, California and I met up with him at Sacramento Quilting Show and Festival on March 25th, where he provided me an incredible chance to demo the machine. Not only did I quilt on leather, but the machine easily w...

    Have a question concerning my 111w151 if anyone can help would greatly be appreciated. The bobbin case clasp rubs on the bottom of the slide plate giving me bird nest of the top thread as it makes the loop. Have know idea if there is a way to lower the case or if it had the wrong bobbin case in it when I bought it. Works great with the slide off. Thank you!

    This is a domestic machine with some bells added. The real question, what’s beefed up inside? Leather on the Kenmore these look like will wreck the timing. I just want to know the differences…

    Any videos on how to thread this machine. I think I did it right but now the bottom thread won’t come up and I can’t see anything pls help

    • @viadango
      @viadango 8 місяців тому

      Make sure you are threading the needle correctly, or if the needle is in position correctly. I believe there is a PDF version of the instructions online. I have not used mine recently, but I recall the thread going from the left through the needle to the right. Not picking up the bottom thread could also be a loading issue in the lower shuttle. I will consider making a video of threading soon if you can't resolve.

    Hello. I was lucky enough to purchase one of these machines this summer. I just completed replacing the original motor with a servo. Would it be possible for you to make a video on how to properly thread the machine? It would be a tremendous help. Thank you

  • @astheru
    @astheru 11 місяців тому

    Your tension needed adjusted and may need to use a different needle with the heavy thread. That glue may have messed things up too. Everything has to work together.

  • @danwoodson2384

    What motor do you have on yours for such good control (and so quiet)? My 111W155 still has it's original motor, from 1951 so far as I can tell. It's a single speed 1725 RPM American Safety Table Co. (AMCO) 1/3 HP motor with a built in clutch controlled by the pedal, so the motor is always running full speed. Why do I think the motor is that old? Because just the motor alone weighs in at a whopping 60 pounds! (It sure sounds cool winding up to speed though when you first turn it on!)

    • @harryballsagna4549
      @harryballsagna4549 11 місяців тому

      Can’t speak for the one in the video but for my industrial machines I usually buy an Enduro servo motor off of Amazon that pretty much bolts directly to where the original motor does. Super quiet and very controllable

    • @viadango
      @viadango 11 місяців тому

      I have worked with an original motor, but it was on canvas to make tents in a workshop other than my own. The older motors are not only heavy, but learning to "feather the speed" so to speak is a real skill. When you add into that equation working on leather, I think it is a tough job. Not impossible. I am using a modern Servo Brushless Motor on all my machines.

    I used to use a 16-188 everyday in my uncle’s Upholstery Shop…it’s a very primitive Walking Foot; definitely a few classes below the 111W. From my experiences, The Singer 16, 17 and 18 all could’ve used an extra pre-tensioner to comfortably use #92 and #138. They seem to get inconsistent results with those gauges with just one beehive spring to run through.

    • @viadango

      This explains EVERYTHING. I never thought of that as the problem but it makes total sense to me now.

    • @mollycasey39

      I just serviced one and added a small tension so its tension would do better with heavier threads (Theory; if you spread out the tension you aren't crushing the thread at one spot, then it shreds at the needle.). I also have made spool holders that sit on the table with an auxiliary tension. Works great! The simple way is; I bought this Juki part that looks like a spool holder with a small adjustable tension on it. It taps nicely into an oil hole on top. And it pulls back out, or you can reach what needs to be oiled from the access door in back. Works great.

      I wonder if modern threads, say any after, oh, 1980, simply produce less friction especially when using 18+ gauge needles compared to the linen threads that were common when these stalwarts were produced?

    My 111W-103 was made in 1933. I just gave it to a non sewing belt maker. Came here to look up more info. I was given it from another neighbor that never really used it or forced used it. A son in law of my next door neighor was over when we were putting new flooring in my sewing room and saw it sitting outside. We are in California and he makes sails on the east coast. He tuned it up or me but he said something about hard to set. I know why now. I had not realized it was also missing the knob to adjust presser foot tension. I had gone to an industrial supply and they had a cobbled together manual for these older machnes, so he has a part list but a bit hard to tell which machine. This helps some!

    I picked up a TuffSew 9" zigzag used earlier this year off facebook market place for 250. I was hoping to find a used sailrite but none seem to be around. All Sailrite stuff works with the TuffSew. I upgrade my machine with the WorkerB motor. I printed the stitch length switch plate from thingiverse. I added a light inside over the foot. I threaded the holes so I could add the swing away binding attachment. It also seemed to be missing a spring for the stitch length lever so I popped a spring back in there so the lever would bounce back to the up position. I was one of those people who had only a couple of projects in mind. I figured if I found myself using it more than I thought I could upgrade later to a real sailrite. At this point though the machine works really well. I am very pleased with what I got. The last thing I might do is put it into some kind of table but I really like that I can pack it away when I won't be using it. To call it portable.. is a bit of a stretch. It is super heavy and current lives on my kitchen table. It is a pill to pick up and put away. Your video was lovely.
