I just started playing MGS on an Emulator and the entire time I'm thinking about how amazing this game was. I wouldn't change the graphics from the original, the music was amazing. I only appreciate this game more now that I'm older. The moment you get to the top of the elevator in the beginning and you step out into the snow left such an impression on me at such a young age. It was a game like this that helped inspire me to become an illustrator.
@@ethanplacella Excellent write up. I had a Japanese translation demo cd of the first level of MGS that came with a video game magazine before its release in ‘98. One of the few games I preordered and picked up on release day. I still have it in a box in the closet.

Man this brings back memories. MGS and FF VII. Two of the greatest games ever made for its time. I feel sorry for any 90's kid who hasn't played them. The graphics, the storyline, crying when the sniper wolf girl dies, figuring out you had to switch controller ports to beat psycho mantis, everything was just pure perfection.
For me it was when you're told Meryl's codec frequency is on the back of the CD case. Spent hours searching every accessible area of the game trying to find a CD case. Failed. Eventually went systematically through every possible frequency until I got through to Meryl. Months later realised that the code was on the back of the physical game case. Shook fist in the air at the audacity of hideo kojima. 10 year old mind blown.
Words can't describe how awesome this game was when it came out back in '98. There had never been ANYTHING at ALL like it, the atmosphere, the graphics, the gameplay - it was all bananas. My dad hated video games by this time and even he used to sit and just watch me play the game for a couple of hours because he said it was like watching a great spy movie. It really was insane. I knew this term is overused as hell but "blown away" is the perfect description for how we felt when this came out. But it's still not going to have the same impact because there have been so many great games since then - but THIS ONE was the one that started it all.
Got to be the most revolutionary game ever. Crazy to believe i played this game when i was 10-11 years old. It really made a huge impact in my life, not to even mention the fact that it made me learn english, i used to play it with an english dictionary on my side to understand it, since im spanish speaker. The amount of dedication it has put into it, it was literally a game changer (pun intended). Thanks Kojima and his team for releasing such a gem.
To those of you who weren’t around in ‘98 to experience this masterpiece on PS1, this game is going fine and normal military action until psycho mantis part. Once a super natural element is introduced there, the game goes nuts up crazier and more fun.
@@anasbakhit4303 Yes but since the game was developed by a (at the time) Nintendo owned developer it couldn't be brought over to other consoles. The entire reason the game was even made was actually due to a conversation between Shigeru Miyamoto and Hideo Kojima.
Thanks. Saved me a good 8 hours. I have a Gamecube but just the console, no plugs, my controller is at my dad's in a bag somewhere, I need to get my cube up and running. And I NEED to know what I was missing in 5th grade. 💢
Nah cutscenes are too over the top and cheesy, but it is expected since twin snakes is not directed by kojima only produced by him, overall mgs 2 controls in this game feels pretty smooth
@@donkeykongisytpooping3002 Kojima has a unique direction skill that none of the director has , that makes every half an hour cutscene interesting to watch
What doesn't is the direction of the cut scenes though :/ Snake missile jumps 4:36:48. Even 14 year old me thought this was incredibly stupid back in the day. It's like Metal Gear Bollywood in this shit
I agree, a lot of people rag on Twin Snakes but one thing I think we can all agree on is there's an excellent attention to detail in the texture work and lighting. Really makes the most of the simple geometry.
I didn’t know there was a remake. This game was an absolute masterpiece. The psycho mantis fight was my absolute favorite. Making the controller vibrate was a nice touch. Great play through but dude USE THE CHAFF GRENADES FOR THE CAMERAS lol.

@@nicholassimko4640 That’s because the original English translation made a lot of changes without Kojima’s approval. Many lines have a different meaning because of this. Twin Snakes is more faithful to the Japanese script.
@@donkeykongisytpooping3002 even if more faithful though the voice acting seems more dialed in than the original dub. Not a fan of some of the VA changes either.
@@mikeg2491 The removal of the accents was done because it was a mistake done by the voice director. As for Gray Fox they gave him a separate voice actor because his original one sounded to much like the DARPA chief. I find his new voice actor fits the character’s face more. Since MGS2 the voice acting has become slower and not everyone is constantly dramatic like in MGS1. Twin Snakes is just following the same pattern with its voice acting as the later games.
My god. I've never seen someone struggle so much with the PAL keys at the end. Room temp, cold, hot. Probably the most specific the MGS series has ever been and this dude was totally lost lol
He struggled most of the game 😂 😂 so many alerts, bad aim, lots of continues, pal cards, this more a lets play than walk through 😂 thought this was his first run 😂
Play this game back in 98 after not really hearing about it but playing it through demos. There was nothing like it not even close, I fell in love with this game because it was the hardest game I've played as well! No online to help or save you😂😂😭😭🤷🏾♂️! Sniper wolf still gives me nightmares!!!
i played the OG demo to death in the 90s. when the full game came out i must of played it non stop for months, such a good game, it will always be my favourite video game.
This game is the first true game classic on par with movie classic's, it just holds up in every way!!! Like a good film the dated graphics like dated cinematography of a old film adds character.. utterly perfect...
Even after all these years, Snake talking about Adamska having his arm cut off like that at 52:47 still makes me laugh to tears. I think it's the hand gesture. I don't know if it was intentionality meant to be funny but it just hits a note with me for some reason 🤣
What's funny was when they fired a rocket at Snake he does a flip jumps off the rocket and somehow while still in the air pulls out a rocket launcher on each hand and fires both rocket launchers still in the air. The funny part is he's wearing a skin tight suit, the rocket launchers just appeared from out of no where while he reached for them behind his back.
Metal gear solid has always been a game that everyone has been talking about ever since I was kid. Gaming was not popular where I live when I was a kid, I owned a ps2 when I was 5 but I never owned a ps1, so when I played this game I was really envious of people born in the 90's who experienced this game right when it released, I can never appreciate the game like they did but I still loved every second of the game
1:55:46 the oldest trick in martial arts, Gray Fox thought that Snake is going for a high kick, but Snake saw an opening in Gray Fox's leg, it's an effective move

You do know this game does have the beginning and the song at the end for some reason this video just doesn't show it but they are in the game so play the game
yes one of the best. the main story, plot twist (eps the ocelot n the president), character story (even the enemy story makes me kinda sad, talkin bout gray fox). if konami wants money n comeback they rly shouldve an MGS remake.
I was a sophomore in HS when this came out and this masterpiece was way ahead of its time. I wish the current had this story/movie type progression between missions. I found myself spending more time exploring the open world trying to extract everything instead of completing missions lol.
Honestly, most of the VAs sounded bored here. Then again, can’t blame them given that they don’t feel like doing the same thing again. Honestly, they sounded better in the original.
@@donkeykongisytpooping3002 Even then, the VAs in 2 had more effort than Twin Snakes. The only time I would say are good would be Rob Paulsen’s Gray Fox, and a few quotes like “Liquid! How the?” and “Why did you disguise yourself as Master?” sounded better in Twin Snakes than in the original since in the former, Snake was more surprised there, and in the latter, Snake sounded pissed.
@@justinesun631 There are many characters that sound better in Twin Snakes and some that sound better in the original. Many characters do a good job delivering their lines. I’d only say a few characters sound bored at times. Naomi sounds bored in most codec calls but it does closely resemble her MGS4 voice and nobody had any complaints with how she delivered her lines in that game. Mantis, Ocelot and Liquid I think are better then the original due to the actors putting in emotions in that fit in the scenes better like when Liquid crashes his Hind. He sounds more calm in the original while in Twin Snakes he sounds very upset and frustrated. In the end I think it mostly comes down to personally preference.
Maaan! This triggered some of the deepest memories i have. Only those who played in the golden era of 32bits know how much revolutionary this game was. Thank you for the upload, fox!
Still confused why the president only had level 2 security clearance when the engineer had level 4 lol. Wouldn't the president have like a master security card allowing him to monitor anything and everything
The story, the characters, the game play, the cinematics...but some fo get to also give huge credit to Harry Gregson-Williams. His score for the series has been unmatched til this day.
I remember playing this when it came out. It was definitely advanced for its time. I liked that it was a two disc game and the boss fight with psycho mantis was intense. David Hayter does a amazing job as the voice as snake.
Kojima is a genius. It's sad that we will never have another Kojima Metal Gear :/. RIP Snake RIP Big Boss. Which one is your favorite? I'm torn on it. I really like the phantom pain. But I think I have to go with 4. The story is just so good.
This game could look even better. There's a 4K texture pack out there that makes it look sharper and with Dolphin you can play it 16:9 without stretching the screen. I've try to play that way and trust me, it's waaaay better.
look, there is a video fo someone using literally ps1 textures over the GameCube ones, if the graphics of the ps1 version of your game is giving you a run for your money, you know you are doing something really fucking bad.

That's awesome, thanks for sharing your story :)
Still waiting for next gem syphon filter as well
To those of you who weren’t around in ‘98 to experience this masterpiece on PS1, this game is going fine and normal military action until psycho mantis part. Once a super natural element is introduced there, the game goes nuts up crazier and more fun.
5:47 Liquid: "I know you're here, brother..."
I think it was a mistake not releasing this game on the ps2 as well back then, all the install base was on the ps2 and the freaking ps2 was on fire.

Probably the most specific the MGS series has ever been and this dude was totally lost lol

i played the OG demo to death in the 90s. when the full game came out i must of played it non stop for months, such a good game, it will always be my favourite video game.
Same here and i still remember it. The game was something else, classic
This game is the first true game classic on par with movie classic's, it just holds up in every way!!! Like a good film the dated graphics like dated cinematography of a old film adds character.. utterly perfect...
Do you think this is MGS1 from 1998?
Can you not tell it’s a remake?

Honestly, most of the VAs sounded bored here. Then again, can’t blame them given that they don’t feel like doing the same thing again. Honestly, they sounded better in the original.
At least PC can mod in the OG dub
@@MoreEvilThanYahweh Only good thing would be Rob Paulsen as Gray Fox, who I think is tied with Greg Eagles.
They sound identical to how they sounded in MGS2.
