    Extremely lucky person to have a daughter that wants to hunt it's a true gift not very many kids want to try and hunt let alone be successful at it.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  2 роки тому

      It takes a ton of time, as Jordan is learning (and I am re-learning) to be successful with a bow. We take so much of that learning curve for granted since it happened so long ago over so many years, but there are still beginners that struggle with the same stuff Jordan is struggling with (consistency past 15 yards) and how to set up stands where the shots are that close. It is worth more attention on our end to help these beginners. It is something we will devote ourselves to over the coming years. Thanks for the support.

    Congratulations Jordan! Way to go! Bill I am a walk in guy myself because I have witnessed the bigger deer not deal well with ATV noise. As a matter a fact I do not take wheelers on my place a month before the opener for bow but that is here in Wisconsin. Also do not use wheelers for recovery I use a cart. Just my thoughts.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  2 роки тому +1

      I think your deer must be more sensitive than mine or mine are more used to 4 wheelers. I used to recover deer with four-wheeler on the farm in southern Iowa (have not shot enough here on the new farm to have a sample size) and I would hunt the same stand the next day and the deer seemed to be just as natural as if I had never been there. I would tend to think that walking in with a cart would leave a lot more scent than driving in with the ATV right to the animal. You are going to blow them out anyway even with the cart, so may as well get it done and be gone with as little scent as possible. Also, back in the day, I would shoot 30+ does every season (some years many more than that). Some evenings I would have four on the ground by dark. There was no way I was going to cart that many. That also showed me that gut piles seemed to mean nothing to deer as I would sometimes hunt those same stands the next day and deer would still be acting normal. I can't argue the point of walking in, but I think you would have to use a cattle prod to get me to use a cart take out a deer I had shot. I am glad I hunt Iowa and not Wisconsin. I would need joint replacement by now if I had to cart out that many deer! Good input. I always appreciate your thoughts.

    • @RushOutdoors
      @RushOutdoors 2 роки тому

      @@bill-winke I can't disagree with the thoughts you have laid out Bill for sure. I agree 100% with the gut piles they have never seemed to have issues with them at all. I only have 72 acers so I might be a little sensitive about sound and the deer at least on the property. The road allows ATV's to be run on it and the deer just seem to watch them as they drive by but in the thick cover. I might give it a try for recovery's next year and see what happens because I am not getting any younger either. Lol!!!! Thanks for your thoughts on this. I will see you at ATA if you are going this year. Have a GREAT DAY!

    Bill you said you expect to see a restart in buck movement. My question is and I know it's a tough question, but I have an opportunity to bow hunt some private ground in southern Iowa the week of the Nov. 28th., what should I expect to see as far as deer activity ? there is plenty of corn fields and some turnips.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  2 роки тому

      Thanks Richard. To answer your question, they should be going to food pretty hard by then. Afternoon hunts will be better but mornings near bedding areas might produce. Just don't bump the deer in the mornings that you are hoping will come to food in the evenings. Good luck. That can be a very good time for shooting a good buck.

    The only road access to my property is from the south & I hunt the north end. Wind is usually from the W or WSW. Walking thru the property I spook deer. Illinois first firearm season was this past Fri - Sun & I got permission to walk in thru the neighbor's from the NE. That trail is so hilly my knees were hurting pretty bad, so the next 2 days I resorted to driving my truck thru my property with the windows closed, parking on the far north end & walking 150 yards SE to the blind. I figured one of our trucks is driving thru the property at least once a week. Not sure if it was the thing to do or not as the weather was so bad very few deer were moving & I didn't get anything.

    Hey Bill, you and I have "chatted" about this before.
    I am one of those that due to age and health will drive my side by side to within 30 yards of my blinds.
    I am also one of those that drive my woods often, cutting wood, working on the habitat, or just checking out the wildlife and plants and such with my wife.
    So the deer are pretty accustomed to the vehicle going through the woods.
    Now some will say "But you won't kill the big bucks doing this!".
    I beg to differ as we have killed some pretty big bucks doing this.
    I have literally had deer walk right next to my side by side, and thought they had their heads stuck inside the cab! Seriously!!! lol
    Two weeks ago I shot a nice buck that was only 70 yards from my RTV.
    In all cases I will park behind a brush pile, or in between some cedar trees to "hide" the RTV.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  2 роки тому +1

      Excellent input Lonnie. I think for anyone else reading this, the most important part is that the deer there are used to ATVs. Won't necessarily work like that if they aren't. I remember hunting one big farm where the deer rarely saw or heard ATVs. A friend of mine told me about how he drove to his stand and never spooked a single deer. I was set up about 400 yards away that afternoon and when I heard the ATV I looked in that direction and there were at least a dozen deer running in my direction. I didn't have the heart to tell Larry.
      So after that lesson, I am not going to use ATVs in areas where the deer aren't used to them even if it seems that I am getting away with it. Good luck.

      No, I wish. Logistics have worked against me this year. Jordan is not really a morning person and the places we have had to hunt to fit into her limitations regarding range and controlled encounter have kept us off the open ridges, for the most part. I will hunt mornings again more aggressively next year. This year has been all about helping Jordan figure this sport out and hopefully enjoy it while having success. Good luck.

    I can't count how many times we have seen deer, including mature deer, standing within 20-30 yards of our atv when we have come out of the woods. I have 2 older friends that drive their 4 wheelers to the stand and constantly kill deer. I do believe it is situational.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  2 роки тому

      Definitely situational. You have to do whatever is necessary to keep from tipping them off. That can range all the way from driving to your blind or stand or spending the night in the woods and everything in between, depending on the situation and what fits the natural order that they are already tuned into. Good input. Happy Thanksgiving.

    Wow...what an episode..so much to comment i try to keep short...1st...congrats to jordan..1st one is special and shes doin way better than i did..lost the 2 first does i shot 35 years ago..very nearly never hunted archery again..wich brings me to my most important comment in a long time... had no mentor or anyone to ask bout tuning, form, gear..all i had was folks like you and randy, chuck adams writings..so i read and re read every thing you guys wrote to help with shooting.. what saved me was a commitment to myself and the animals i was hunting to not shoot another deer past 15 yards until i started hitting them exactly where i wanted to...then i moved my range out 5 yards a year after that and held until i hit near perfect shots .then add 5 more..strictly..no exceptions ..ever..no matter how big he was...i let some of biggest bucks ive ever got close to walk cuzz at 22 yards and not 20..and i swore to myself id never shoot another quartering to shot until i was just pro level shooter...the result was i went 32 years shooting many deer a season without loosing one again...the way your starting jordan out is how i start out my newbies...they learn the discipline it takes to let a bad angle or range walk early..stick to high percentage shots..and hopefully you go a whole carreer without ever feeling the pain of loosing an animal to a slow death..some folks it doesnt bother and more power to ya...but it hurts me bad and i never wanta feel it again..plus they get the benefit of honing their skills at gettin close to them. How ya move when ya move..how to spend time with deer within 20 yards without gettin busted ! Part of bowhunting is understanding how quickly it can all go sideways between the time you hit full draw til arrow finds its mark..and having the discipline to stay focused thru the entire shot process..while every ounce of you inside is screaming "just shoot ! Now ! " and ya can rarely get a do over...and i hope people take notice...well done brother..an awesome example your setting for our sport...could talk bout atv stuff to...but long enough comment now..thx for the experiment..

    I’ve killed way more deer right after being dropped off with our regularly used mode of transport to the stand(s) than any other method of getting to the stand. I harvested one of my biggest bucks to date after getting dropped off by a riding lawnmower

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  2 роки тому +1

      The drop-off is a really good approach because the vehicle/ATV, etc. never really stops. Deer are most wary if/when we stop and shut the vehicle off. That's when they start thinking, "What next?" Good point.

    We keep using a four wheeler all year on the ranch. Even getting within 250-300 yards of the does favorite hang out. That works on several of the places where we have tree or ladder stands. Like you say they get used to particular vehicles. It works as last Saturday a really awesome 10 pointer was arrowed and killed. The ride was parked less than 100 yards away in drainage wash. He was in the stand about 1 hour. He shot at about 1pm. Deer will pattern people very quickly. I know a guy rifle shot several deer, some were awesome, from riding his tractor and seeing these deer several times just standing watching him.

    Hi Bill I have watched Midwest Whitetail since its inception, and read all your articles on Petersons Bowhunting. I love this new show and getting to follow the process of hunting, managing your new property. I also LOVE the fact that your daughter is on the show. I have three daughters that I take hunting, the oldest being 14, and it gives me hope that one of them might still want to hunt with dad after they are all grown up. So great to get to watch your hunts again. Best of luck for the rest of the year.

    Great topic. I’m not big on driving ATV’s in areas where mature bucks live. We will drive ag fields because the deer are use to field noise. We try and give all the deer habitat areas that are human free, and try and kill them in the ag/food plots. We have killed more 4 to 6yr old bucks since we reduced are amount of time in the bedroom. Obviously, not everyone has the same options. If we do go in the timber…it’s between Nov 1 and Nov 10 with certain conditions. Also, it’s good to think about what your neighbors are doing…do they apply a lot of pressure or not.

    Do you mind to share the recipe for the jerky? I like to try something different every year.
    If you have signal and the budget , I’d load the farm down with cell cams to watch reactions to atv traffic. I’ve noticed it pushes mature bucks closer to cover but has no great affect during the rut. Mid and late December is when I notice deer get bothered by atv or vehicle entrance. Congrats to Jordan on her first bow harvest.

      That makes sense Jay. I really see a huge difference in behavior on my farm after the rut and into December (after the gun season). Even though we don't gun hunt my farm (the one I sold) the deer were still much spookier in December. Much harder to kill. Good luck.

    Great job jordan, keep up the good work! You know bill, i have been reading your articles for 25 years, as a young bowhunter you encouraged me and taught me, now i am teaching and encouraging my kids, as you are yours. Thank you. My 13 year old son killed a nice seven point this year as a result of us setting a stand together, i will never forget it, great job passing the torch, not only to people like me, but to your own kid as well.

    Congrats on your first deer, Jordan! Great job teaching her too, Bill. I was wondering if you had talked about Jordan’s arrow set up or if I missed it somewhere. Also, any reason for not using lighted nocks. I think they can be a great teaching tool for new hunters on shot placements. Love the content you’re putting out.

    • @bill-winke
      @bill-winke  2 роки тому +1

      Brian, we did a video on how to build arrows that kind of addressed her arrow choice but we never got into the tradeoffs that led us to a specific choice. That is definitely something to consider for the SetUp series soon. We should use the lighted nocks for the purposes of the video, but otherwise I am not a fan. I don't want to get into the habit (especially when practicing) of watching the arrow. I want to focus on the spot until the arrow hits, but for the purposes of video, they are really good. Have a great day.

    Bill, I'm so glad I found you again! I started watching Midwest Whitetail about 15+ years ago when I first started bowhunting in my teens. I learned so much from you on that show. You definitely have had an impact on my hunting success over the years. I kinda lost track of the show as life got busy for me and many life changes happened, but I did notice that you had sold your farm and moved on from the show. Needless to say, now I watch these episodes with my two young boys who will hopefully be bowhunting as soon as possible with me. After watching your episode on what you put in your hunting pack, do you have any suggestions or brands of packs that have held up for you? I’m in the market for a new one. God bless from cold and snowy MN!

      Man, I really appreciate all the support. To answer your question, I have tried several over the years, but I do really like this Insights pack I am using now. It is their Element pack: insightsoutdoors.com/products/the-element It has a lifetime warranty so that speaks for something regarding durability. Good luck.
