- It is hard to tell a three year story in one episode so I didn't even try. Instead, in the Classic version I focused on the day of the hunt and spent a good bit of time on the blood trail that finally led to this great buck. I am sure I will never hunt another buck like this one. Man, what a deer!

Awesome story Bill, if you’ve now hunted long you know the emotions you were feeling. The buck hadn’t been dead long when you found him, he wasn’t even stiff yet. Congratulations!
What an absolute Monarch!! Those big boys don't just fall over unless it's perfect! He must have been one crazy fighter seeing all the bare patches of skin on him.
He was a super tough deer. We actually video of the fight where lost a bunch of that hair. He got routed, but it was late enough and dark enough we couldn't tell much about the other buck.

As soon as I saw the hit I thought two issues: he's hit far back (probabbly liver and then no pass thru. Then didn't give him enough time. I say this from painful personal regret. Fortunately you are on a big enough piece of land, and had a good blood trail. Glad you found your giant!
Yes, it was dead square liver. It looked better than that on video. He only went about 150 yards total though. Not very far, but he was tough and lived longer than I would have liked.

I like the subtle teaching to your son about tracking instead of busting through your getting your son involved to know what to look for. Tracking a deer can be a tough task when the blood trail gets sparse. Great hunt and mentoring Bill!👍 Cant wait to see some new vids but these older vids are great

myself, I love the continuing chase of the same deer over a period of years. There’s just something about it that I really enjoy. I’d love to watch a Jim Shockey The Professionals type sit down show where you talk to all your old cameraman and hunting partners. I think people would love it.
I sure could fill a few volumes of videos with stories from all these hunts. What a great way to live! All the best.

How much stress and pressure did you have to deal with during your Midwest whitetail run? I can’t even imagine how hard it was
So many deadlines and so many people who I had to interact with each day. It did wear me down. I think adrenaline is the only thing that keeps you going sometimes. It's getting to be that way again now, unfortunately. Something I was trying to avoid.
I really like Bill Winkle's attitude toward hunts. how many yards was that shot?
Thanks Wayne. I appreciate it. That shot was 50, but I had been practicing a lot of long shots that year and I was good out to 60. The main thing with shots past about 25 yards, though, is whether the deer will move when the arrow is in the air. That is really the big x-factor. In this case, if you look at it closely, the buck started to take a step as the arrow was in the air and that resulted in the hit that was slightly back (liver). It is hard to tell people what their maximum range is, but like I said, it is more related to the animal's movement than to the archer's pure ability. That is something to consider on every shot.
@@bill-winke Yessir I believe that too. I did in fact notice the deer step forward. i've been doin saddle public land bow hunting for about 11 years now and ive realized that deer in open areas have alot less predictable movements than a deer in thick side-covered bedding areas so my maximum range i trust varies. I practice to 60 yards max comfortably, my sight goes out to 100 yards but I don't bother with it unless I'm in a controlled inside environment to train stability. Regardless, hitting a 4" circle at 60 yards I can do comfortably but I'd take that shot on a buck who's less tempted to move while sniffing around head down in one spot in bedding areas. However in an open area like yours, I'll trust myself to 40 only as theres so many distractions and attractions that can cause him to move after that yardage. most times if I can take a buck without bleating at him I'll do it. as they don't hear the release on my Mathews. If I stop them I'm afraid any sound after that may encourage a twitch so have never tried it. Good job brother.

What Broadhead did you use to shoot him with
it didn't look like you got good penetration, were you shooting a mechanical head? 15 or 20 years ago i hit a big 9 pointer in the liver one evening, i knew it was a liver hit so i left and went back at first light and found him right away but unfortunately the coyotes found him first. my friend had a pet mountain lion so she got the meat. the coyotes started eating at the anus and tore the buck up pretty bad. that was the last quartering to shot i ever took.

Chad, I think that had been planted to beans that spring but we had a drought that year and wiped most of the spring planted plots out. I believe it was some kind of volunteer grass that he was eating. Not sure what it was exactly.

Midwest Whitetail is just not the same without you big guy
I appreciate that, but I do think the guys that are operating it now are doing a really nice job. I still watch it regularly. I like it better than any other whitetail content on the web.
Was u shooting rage expandable when u shot this deer?
No, that was a very small cutting diameter (1 1/4 inch) Rocket Steelhead. It hit the offside and bounced back slightly. I was a pure liver hit - center liver - so I am not sure why it didn't break the skin on the other side. It was a really big bodied buck, but it should have fully penetrated.
@@bill-winke good job. Really enjoy your content. Has very bad experience with rage in my past. Seems like they eother baisically cut the deer in half or don't deploy at all. I'm staying away from from them things for now on.

203 and some change if I’m not mistaken. World class frame.
