The rumor that they want to shut down those community projects comes from the takedown of the TF2 Source 2 port. This is false. TF2S2 got taken down due to it being unlicensed used of TF2's assets that was potentially being widely distributed, Valve was in their legal right to take it down and the creators of the project knew this, so they weren't upset when it actually did happen. These other projects from what I know are not making such unlicensed use of the assets and are also transformative enough that they stand out from TF2 in how they play, which is why I think people at Valve actually like those projects.

TF2 Classic (from what I remember) had contact from a Valve lawyer to shut the project down but would receive future aid to put it on Steam. After radio silence on Valve’s end, the TF2 Classic Team released an email that was a notice toward Valve that they would continue development as long as Valve didn’t respond. The best thing we can get out of this is the arrangement with the TF2 mods and the 64-bit update but that's because we already knew that so I don't have much reason to expect anything else to happen at all this year.
Which is an entirely fair thought to have, considering Valve's track record for the literal 7 YEARS since Jungle Inferno. I try to focus on the positives and be at least hopeful about the future, because this game's pretty much my entire life.
Hearing about a "spread thin" workforce at valve is mind boggling when they have all the money of the PC gaming market at their fingertips. They could hire a small army if they wanted but just don't. Makes even less sense when they can and have outsourced huge parts of game development to the community, who are more than happy to help. The community is far better to TF2 than TF2 has deserved in a while.
From what I know of, Valve is very stingent and closehanded when it comes to hiring, only hiring those that are beyond talented. It still hurts that Valve doesn't hire at least some contracters or (god forbid) ask some help from the community...

I've said this for a while now, but the ideal scenario is going back to old actual content updates like love and war, end of the line, invasion, gunmettle, etc (but this is obviously fantasy). What I'd be happy with is if they'd just do weapon balances/reworks maybe 1-2 times a year and actually consistently compete in the hackerbot arms race. In my opinion with how their casual servers have been for years, it is disgusting how they seemingly do nothing but slap together a workshop lootbox full of random stuff a couple times a year and sell a bunch of lootboxes without actually improving the bot problem. I will give them credit with some fixes in the summer 2023 update, but it still shouldn't have taken a mass community outcry after years of waiting for the amount of work that was actually done. I know they literally have 1 dev and a contracter for the game so they cannot do much, but it reflects terribly on the company that they refuse to outsource tf2 projects when there is a massive community constantly making content that valve profits off of.
I really hope Valve hires on multiple people who are as passionate about TF2 as Eric is to the TFTeam, or find some way to make TF2's development remote work compatible.
4:03 Perhapse they mean they playtest some maps when there is the manpower to do it. Otherwise I guess its good faith in the map makers that they dident f up somewhere. Thats just my guess.
There are so many programmers, artists etc who are really passionate about the game who would gladly work on this game, but valve apparently no longer following their own values. There was a time when Valve hired modders and indie developers to work in their company. It's like the company grew too big for its good due to how successful Steam gotten, as well the economies of their games that turned out to be huge successes, but on the other hand it kept too small and understaffed to be able to continue releasing new games and to maintain their releases. They are severely understaffed to be able to maintain TF2 as its becoming more and more evident. But the 64 bit update is a welcome one (although it's no Source 2, but even CS seems to be a challenge to replicate in Source 2 for now.)
What dimension do you people live in? Talking about new maps, possibilities of a new weapons, community project support. HELLO? GOOD MORNING? GAME IS ****ING UNPLAYABLE HALF OF THE TIME DUE TO BOTS? Why this is not a priority? 5 years have passed already. Why they did not asked questions about it?

I highly doubt that they will port it to source 2. TF2 is not the kind of game that would play better or be more fun in source 2 imo, not compared to a more realistic shooter like CS. Plus, with 64 bit, it feels like a double down on trying to maintain the current version of source. As for the game, it’s just Fallout 4, but I REALLY REALLY REALLY modded it to be more realistic and survival, it has like 500 mods in it lmao
Eric has always been super helpful when I had to make a fix to a cosmetic. Sadly I tried E-mailing them about some new case models I made to see if they would be interested in using them. Ghosted lol
Where is the information about them adding weapons? Or them wanting to change weapons? I looked through the document and couldn't find it. I might just be blind but I'm not seeing it
No you're not blind, it's not in the document. The info about them possibly adding or changing weapons is from personal experience and contact with Valve employees in the recent months. Don't get too excited, now, just because it's something they want to do doesn't mean they will. But I do still have hopes. I was thinking they might do a neat spring cleaning update, but that's more my own ambition.
I dont know anything about making, fixing, or testing a game. But does it really take up to 4 years to find a solution to the bots, or cheaters. I know hes one guy but like, you think there would have been solutions or attempts at them now. Idk though
So, I read through the original thread and the botting/cheating problem WAS addressed, but quite unremarkably. Best to read the thread yourself, however the TL;DR is that Eric is more than well-aware of the bot problem. However, as Valve is a major company with only ~350-400 employees and several high-priority projects, live service games take a backend for new projects as Valve likes to stay small in its workforce. So, needless to say, there is no focus within Valve to implement any anti-botting measures; at least, for the forseeable future, but they are aware of the problem.
Eric and Joshie are the only 2 people who kept the whole game alive. No wonder why bot problems seems to be hard for go away. Which leaves me a question on, why Valve didn’t just hire more people? Heck, I can dare to say many TF2 community literally willing to work on TF2 even if it’s for free.
The notion of "choosing" is a lot more complicated. Yes, they could work on tf2, but it wouldn't further their reputation in the company, and typically there are still project leaders that will move you to different places. Don't quote me on this, the valve structure is SO difficult to understand.
@@casaclub988 Yeah, I wish it were as simple as just moving on over to tf2, but unfortunately the title is pretty low priority compared to big ticket projects like the steam deck or cs2
So, I found out post-video in a discord screenshot, apparently he did ask eric, and eric responded with essentially “the issue is complicated” which sounds kind of cop out
I think Valve (Or at least some) actually do care about TF2. But I think that, in a way. They see TF2 as completed. To them, they might feel like it's a finished game. They might feel like it doesn't need anything more done to it. (Apart from seasonal updates for new content). I can see where they come from about this. Whatever plans the few people working on it have; Those are most likely gonna be smaller things. Stuff that wouldn't take a lot of development power. That doesn't mean the game doesn't need updates. It does. However, I think TF2 for the most part isn't Valve's overall highest priority. Even if it does have big problems.
4:05 if they do exist. then my heart goes to the blind and deaf playtester and designer who work on tf2. also not sure if people don't get it. tf2 is not back until Valve give it full real team.... we will get dota 2 source 3 before that.
Basically, employees at Valve get to work on whatever they feel like, with their usefulness to the company being determined at "peer review" meetings. Unfortunately, this creates the situation where people would rather work on stuff like Half Life: Alyx than volunteer to fix TF2. Both because it's a lot less interesting and because it's genuinely risky to try and #SaveTF2. Even if you set out to fix the bot problem, there's a very real chance you wont succeed, and then you'll have to explain to whoever conducts the peer review meetings that you spent months trying and failing to fix the bot crisis.
From this, it sounds like there is a tiny part of Valve that gives a shit, but it's nowhere near enough for them to actually do something for the game. Let alone fix the bot problem.
Here is a full list of my mods! This is slightly outdated by a few weeks but should be the gist of it. docs.google.com/document/d/1MDpRcp3KksCD0DnU4hPhbJH2BgLhQuo1rWiUT2SdWYM/edit
I wonder why the community cannot volunteer with helping in the coding process. The community is passionate enough and even though the community is already helping with making maps, I feel like more could be done with a dozen more hands doing some of Eric's work because they know TF2 spaghetti code.
The issue with hiring the community is the risk of security. Remember the code leaks we got awhiles back? They are why bots and cheaters are so rampant right now, so giving access of the new code to community members runs the risk of making it worse (at least I believe in my opinion).
I don't trust the "community". the "community" don't represent the needs and wants of the average tf2 player. did we forget the invasion update ? did we forget MYM. did we forget how every "community" runned thing end up. Also why VALVE is out of the equation when we talking about tf2 needing more support. WHY we don't DEMAND from Valve devs to work on tf2. the flat structure is a lame excuse and sadly. only Valve dev can help tf2 ( i hope so)
5:55 Respect to him but man, tf2 is not one or two man job. no matter how good you are. tf2 needs more hands on decks if we want things to get better. you know. like solving the bot and matchmaking system (Give us Quick play back)

Don't get too excited, now, just because it's something they want to do doesn't mean they will. But I do still have hopes. I was thinking they might do a neat spring cleaning update, but that's more my own ambition.
IS THAT THE MORBIOUS HUD????
IT’S MORBIN TIME
5:02 LOOK AT CHAT LMFAOO
I airshot this spy ONCE and he immediately started spouting comments like that lmao
I feel bad for Eric.
Wait a minute... did I hear the two words "new comic"?
5:16 i came to hear tf2 news and i ended up seing a sentry buster with an uber medic on it.
Good content bro
Before we get new spells we need to get all weapons in australium form and stranges.
so all those meme's of only one guy working on tf2 were true
Nice, they gave the plant a name
I dont know anything about making, fixing, or testing a game. But does it really take up to 4 years to find a solution to the bots, or cheaters. I know hes one guy but like, you think there would have been solutions or attempts at them now. Idk though
ERIC THE GOAT!
No news on any kind of anti-cheat or anti-bot system?
So, I read through the original thread and the botting/cheating problem WAS addressed, but quite unremarkably.
Best to read the thread yourself, however the TL;DR is that Eric is more than well-aware of the bot problem. However, as Valve is a major company with only ~350-400 employees and several high-priority projects, live service games take a backend for new projects as Valve likes to stay small in its workforce.
So, needless to say, there is no focus within Valve to implement any anti-botting measures; at least, for the forseeable future, but they are aware of the problem.
He should have asked about the bot problem
what's this viewmodel animation rework thingy you got?
It’s a collection of animation overhauls from Gamebanana, I believe the creator is Kylul?
Eric and Joshie are the only 2 people who kept the whole game alive. No wonder why bot problems seems to be hard for go away. Which leaves me a question on, why Valve didn’t just hire more people? Heck, I can dare to say many TF2 community literally willing to work on TF2 even if it’s for free.
"balance changes" and "new weapons" uh huh, sure
Eric is a legend
I literally just came here to see if one of the questions happen to be about the bot crisis and none were so I don’t care
I dug around and he did actually talk about the bot issue, I found out after the video. Check out my latest community post on it.
i know that workers on Valve choose were to work in there or smth
i refuse to believe that there only 1 guy that wants to work on TF2
The notion of "choosing" is a lot more complicated. Yes, they could work on tf2, but it wouldn't further their reputation in the company, and typically there are still project leaders that will move you to different places. Don't quote me on this, the valve structure is SO difficult to understand.
@@cipherlock oh ok i guess that makes sence
@@casaclub988 Yeah, I wish it were as simple as just moving on over to tf2, but unfortunately the title is pretty low priority compared to big ticket projects like the steam deck or cs2
Should have stole the valve
if we get even balance changes then i will actually loose my mind
Love this interview but WHY was there no Questions About the bot problem!
So, I found out post-video in a discord screenshot, apparently he did ask eric, and eric responded with essentially “the issue is complicated” which sounds kind of cop out
@@cipherlock oh damn ok then
"All the updates" ?? Updates? Yall see any?
good, so im not the only person still using the morbius hud since that video
it’s morbin time :)
Is Eric authorized to ask help from the community or something?
I cannot ɓelieve youre still using morbhud
REPENT AND CONVERT TO MORBIUS
why didn't he ask about the bots
I dug around and he did actually talk about the bot issue, I found out after the video. Check out my latest community post on it.
@@cipherlock dang. it should be top priority imo. the bots invade half of the servers in stockholm and Australia and Germany servers.
hope we can get the real source 2 sdk
as a valve employee:
As a heavy update:
As a sex update:
And how u play the 64 beta for tf2?
Currently you can play the beta when you open up the launch options for tf2. Note, servers do not run 64 bit yet so youll have to play it solo
@@cipherlock oh okay Ty man
4:05 if they do exist. then my heart goes to the blind and deaf playtester and designer who work on tf2.
also not sure if people don't get it. tf2 is not back until Valve give it full real team.... we will get dota 2 source 3 before that.
valve makes BILLIONS of dollars (look at cs2 revenue from cases opened each month) how do they not have enough man power? just hire more staff?
Nah it's clearly not enough, we need to unbox MORE MORE MORE
Basically, employees at Valve get to work on whatever they feel like, with their usefulness to the company being determined at "peer review" meetings.
We love Eric 💕
From this, it sounds like there is a tiny part of Valve that gives a shit, but it's nowhere near enough for them to actually do something for the game. Let alone fix the bot problem.
Im sorry. But I'll believe it when i see it, till then its more empty words.
I wonder who decides the new items for each update
me :)
no me :) @@cipherlock
@@EmanS117no me I do that :)
whats the mod you're using?
Here is a full list of my mods! This is slightly outdated by a few weeks but should be the gist of it.

good video as always, (:
So you're telling me about 3,000 people have been harassing two programmers for the last few years? That would explain why nothing's getting done.
im still a bit scared 4 TF2 im just worried and idk :(
I'd love to join valve to just work on tf2 xd
Eric leaked the heavy update is coming out with 64 bit, trust me Joshie is my ex husband.
WHY we don't DEMAND from Valve devs to work on tf2. the flat structure is a lame excuse and sadly. only Valve dev can help tf2 ( i hope so)
I think the biggest news for me is that there is acknowledgment of the comics
5:55 Respect to him but man, tf2 is not one or two man job. no matter how good you are. tf2 needs more hands on decks if we want things to get better. you know. like solving the bot and matchmaking system (Give us Quick play back)
tf2?
