  • To go along with my "How to build a garden room" series i am going to show you how to design your own garden room using free 3D modelling software Sketchup.
So much of the problem solving can be done in the comfort of your own home helping to make the actual building of your garden room easier with less costly mistakes.
Each week i will show you how to develop the structural components of your garden room so you can then go off and develop your own room to your chosen size.
    I hope you enjoy.

Thx for this, have enjoyed your series and these sketch up videos mean that I can put my pencil and ruler away. Very helpful.

Hey, just a big thank you for these videos. I used sketchup in college with the OU but never thought of it for a project like this. My planning has started. :)

Thanks for the video as I am looking into a similar garden room project. I would so say that for a beginner with sketchup(as I am) the best thing to use is a 3 button mouse and in stead of going to the orbit tool, pan etc. Just click the scroll wheel for orbit, shift + scroll for pan and scroll for zoom. This instantly makes sketchup more fun. Also learn the common shortcuts like r for rectangle, p for pushpull etc.

This is gold dust for me. I’m just starting to design a room for my son. I’ve already watched a few of your vids and I might use your idea (or was it your dads idea) for the concrete pillars. Keep up the great work.

Hi thanks for the video. Just to clarify where you space the centreline of the joist for a sheet of ply / Osb (18:23) Should this be 1220 mm not 1200 mm ?

    HI
Firstly thanks for your videos, i'm just starting with the first of the garden room videos. In the video you mention that we are going to be using the free sketch up version ! I am using the free version but can see that my layout is different from yours, I've also noticed differences in how task are able to be completed, the first I've just found out that my version is different to your's in that in your video @ 12:00 you mention clicking on the nearest corner & push the alt key !! this will make a copy ! Whilst in my version I've just found that I've in actual fact got to select the object that's to be copied 3 times on the Right mouse button then go into edit and under this i have to copy then past it on the page.
I'm worried that i'm in fact using the wrong version and would if possible like a link to the free version that your'e using.

Why aren't you just using a square to create a section then extrude to the depth. This is so around the houses.

It's not around the houses though is it. Extruding a solid section upwards would create a solid flat base. This is showing how you can create the underlaying structure with actual joist timber sizes. Always blows my mind why people trash free content. Anyway.
