Great video, try hitting each edge twice in the same direction before turning your knife around to get the other side at least until you get your bur, it keeps you from flipping your knife around so many times. Great system as i have used it for years, my only slight problem is getting my fillet knifes so razor sharp is that when i am filleting a crappy i sometimes cut right through the backbone because my knife is so sharp at least on the first side of the crappy because the first side doesn't sit as flat on the board as it does on the back side of the crappy. This paper wheel creates a hollow ground edge which i like on my knifes and tools.
Thanks. Yes, I still love this method and I’ve gotten better with it. Developing a burr on each side is a game changer, and this gets it done quickly. Gotta love a sharp knife!
Nice video! It would be much easier and safer to sharpen your knives by having the wheels turning away from you, not towards you. That way, you get better control of the angle at the top of the wheel. For better precision, a "Tormek" type railing system used with a dedicated knife jig can be mounted at the front of the bench grinder. Extra cost obviously, but the difference is noticeable if you want perfect knife edges. Also advisable to wear a face mask. Metal & paste particules are not compatible with lungs.
Really enjoyed the video. There was a guy at a gun show a couple of years back that had this system. Wives sent their husbands to stand in line to get their knives sharp. I was amazed and always wondered what it was...until i saw your video. But this is exactly what he had. I have bought mine and looking forward to testing it. Thanks for the great video.
gave up on regritting the mdf wheel, made an 8" plywood wheel, glued on 240 grit emery sandpaper, lasting over 50 sharpening and still going without any signs of failing!!!!
Use both hands to control the blade. This is true of using bench stones as well. Do not use force to accelerate the sharpening. A final strop is in order and then periodically thereafter. 80% of your sharpening needs can be handled with a good strop and stropping techniques.
One additional comment, i have a strop belt with green polishing grease on it that i hit to remove the bur after you have polished it, this keeps you from having to chase the bur back and forth until it is removed. Great video, please be safe.
Great video AP! Wish I had room for a grinder. The future home of Boomer Ranger Ron's Reloading Bench is the old furnace room, and both Harbor Freight work benches will be made out with the DILLION 5500 and other cartridge making devices. That said, I'd love to have all my kitchen knives this sharp!
@@leafinitup1 I'm sure I can squeeze in a grinder on the bench! The BIG issue is that UA-cam is cracking down on gun videos! I'll send you some startling information and facts on this segment!
Turn the grinder so it rotates away from you. Then you can place the knife facing away from you, and use the top of the wheel, simply angling the knife at the correct angle. Much more stable and safe.
That’s what the directions say, but I didn’t like having to reach over the wheels. I’m more comfortable/ secure. The way I had it. Thanks for the input though. These wheels are absolutely fantastic.
I find it hard to believe that after trying out other sharpening systems...that you've never been able to sharpen a knife to the point it will shave hair
Great video Andrew! I'm bringing my fillet knife out to your place the next time I'm out on Long Island! I'm still sharpening all my knives by hand with a stone and oil. Seems to work just fine for me, but I'd love to know how to sharpen broadheads. Wished I had the space for a bench grinder but all my tools are in the construction shed! And the post Covid-19 haircut looks good too!
LOL. I’m done with the hippie look for the summer. Bring your fillet knives, and bring a striped bass for us to work on! Thanks Ron! Recognize that black knife? I love it.
I think you may have done the serration blade incorrectly. It looked like you kinda introduced the serrations into the wheel’s edge. Te way I believe it is to have been done was to only use the wheel to the non serrated sides of the blade and then the side opposite the serrated entirely to the polishing wheel and the serrated side to the polishing wheel. JUST THAT POLISHING WHEEL WILL BE ENOUGH TO “TWEAK” THE SERRATIONS. The way you did it you’ll run the risk of running your serrations. It’s your knife so it is absolutely your choice, I’m just trying to help you out.good luck.
I wouldn’t recommend using this particular system for the broadheads. For knives it’s incredible, but the wheels can grab the broadheads and toss them. The Iron Will website /UA-cam channel has a good video on the best sharpening method for them.
Have you checked out the guided knife systems I got a cheap knockoff and some quality stones from edge pro and am getting best edges ever ( stones that comes with the cheap version really terrible quality and not even worth trying those)
I agree that the cheap ones aren’t worth it, And I couldn’t justify the price of the better ones. I think the better ones may be good for sharpening broadheads as well.

Why buy 2 wheels of this crap @ $87.00 when you can go to any HD and get a 3/4 inch 2 X 4 sheet of this stuff for $27.00 and make 8 or 10 or more yourself! This company must be making a killing .... Every one has a jigsaw.
Because if it’s the slightest bit uneven and not perfectly round, it will become a weapon spinning at 3500 RPMs. It also has cut outs for reduced vibration and to keep the knife cool. Not impossible to cut your own if you have the appropriate tools, skills and time.
@@leafinitup1 That's why you put it on the grinder then use some 60 or 100 grit paper to make it flat first. Plus, I don't care what that bozo said in his instruction, you need a variable speed grinder and use it on the slowest speed. Right about 1725 RPM
