I sharpen wood chisels a fair bit. I have some results videos but they really take a toll on my wheel so I sigh when asked to do them. I usually trot out an old worn out wheel when I'm doing them. Have only sharpened maybe 3 hand planer wheels but they're very sensitive and if you get them wrong are a misery to use. I prefer to stick to my lane, knife sharpening, although I'll sharpen anything that fits in my jig and do enjoy sharpening garden shears by hand.
If using the angle guide , i and most rest the edge end on the bevel ( using 14 degrees ) prior to the actual cutting edge ... What is the actual cutting edge angle ? I know the angle really doesnt matter near as much as most think 👍
True, I've proven many times that angle isn't as crucial as many people think. Hundreds of thousands of years of knife sharpening without Tormeks and angle guides can attest to this. The Tormek instructions state that the bottom of the angle guide must be at the junction of the wheel and the knife so I place it very close to the wheel without actually touching the wheel which wears out the guide very quickly.
do you have a link to that huge rest of yours thats amazing i have a knockoff tormek and its rest is even worse than the standard tormek. Where the heck can a canadian get kangaroo tail leather i see a lot of places selling not tail, but no luckso far
@@jonannett wait until I get an export permit. I'll know within a month or two. The big test is called the US430. Sold by Tormek. It's not only long but extends high as well, for cleavers.
I disagree. I think it's much worse. It wastes too much time for no extra benefit. I can check the angle in less than 1 second. That thing will slow me down so much I'd end up throwing it over the fence on day one. I lost the will to live after watching the first 15 minutes of the instruction video. Had to turn it off and walk away shaking my head.
G'day Rod. Thanks for stopping in but nah, I'm not a fan, looks like a waste of time for me. I'm talking from ignorance but it appears as if I can get exactly the same job done with the WM-200 in 3 seconds. I only use and need one wheel and don't have time to spend mucking around with that trinket. If you're constantly swapping wheels of different diameters I can see that maybe there might be a luxury use for it and a man can't have too many toys but it's not needed in a professional outfit where time is of the essence and the current tool works perfectly well already.
Since the beginning I have the problem that it's not possible to get the same edge angle on both sides of the blade of a knife. On the one side the edge of the blade is higher, on the other side it's lower. When I set the angle - it fits on the one side, but when I turn the knife - it doesn't on the other side. And that's the reason why the edge is higher on one side. How do I solve this problem?
@@elbuggo true but that's only really an issue with extremely thick knives. Most kitchen knives are fine on the old better jig. But other factors affect the size if the bevel such as fired of travel and pressure plus the knife might be offset ground to begin with so alternate grinding won't help there. Each side is its own grind but again this is usually an issue with very thick hunting knives so I'd need to see the technique to properly diagnose what's going on.
We don't have Walmart down here but that aside, I don't really know much about EDCs or which are popular. What I need to do is put more production value into the shorts to make them more interesting. That one viral I had was a freak because I've made dozens of almost identical videos and none have pushed far at all. Viral videos are largely a mystery to me. If I had the formula I'd follow it because that was an extraordinary event that literally changed my life. I'm about to hit 50,000 subscribers today almost entirely on the back of that one little video alone.

All those years of video sharpening presentions using the Tormek finally paid off in views and subscriptions. BRAVO! You are the Tormek guru on UA-cam and an inspirtation to the rest of us users. Cheers, eh.
Norm 🇨🇦🍻
Thanks so much! I can't believe you remembered!! It's actually next Tuesday but close enough! "Just be yourself, be genuine, be helpful, don't waste their time and they will come" they said. This weekend has been jaw dropping. The stats are insane. Still getting 120,000 views an hour on that one short, my subs tripled in one weekend and people are now watching all my other clips.
@@iSharpen Just proves, Baz that incidental but very important topics about sharpening command a wide audience. Find more such topics of universal interest and you're OVER THE TOP!
Wow! Fantastic tutorial! That edge is beautiful. I learned a lot.
I would love to find a kangaroo tail strop. Do you have a recommendation to buy online with US shipping?
Thanks, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Just this evening I finalised my application for an export permit. Kangaroo is a native species and so protected from commercial exploitation so they require a permit from anyone who wants to sell them. It's going to be a few weeks before I find out if I've been granted one but it's looking promising. Once approved I'll be selling them internationally and you can buy one off me.
@iSharpen very cool, thank you! Hopefully it gets accepted. I'll definitely buy one.
great vid, thanks.
Excellent video. Would you ever do one on sharpening a functional long sword or arming sword? The overall edge length, different angles depending on the target (hard or soft), and being double edged make it a challenge for us novices.
@@kevinc3751 sharpening swords is questionably legal down here. My lane is typically chef's knives and domestic blocks.
Awesome video and very informative. Big thank you 🙏🏻
@@jani8362 happy you got something out of it. You have a T8?
@@iSharpenI ordered one yesterday much thanks to your inspirational videos. So now I try to learn as much as possible before I get it delivered. I have always liked knifes and axes so to learn how to sharpen them seems like a natural progression.
@@jani8362 So cool! Send Tormek an email telling them I influenced you to buy a T8. My aim is for them to reach out to me and then for me to convince them to donate one for me to give away. I have more Tormek T8 videos on my channel than anyone in the (known) universe but I've not heard anything from them. They don't like to sponsor or discount or do giveaways but hopefully if we all pitch in we can change their minds on this one day.
@@iSharpen Will do 👍🏻
Hi Baz another great in depth video, 👍and looking forward to the next one well done mate
Thanks Bob. Got any requests?
@@iSharpen I think you’ve covered most things, I just need to practice more on my T4 to get them as sharp as you do 🤣 it’s a hobby thing for me doing friends knives as well as my own
@@bobcambridge8870 Let me know if you have any specific questions. Everything I say here also applies to the T4.
@@iSharpen will do , Have a good day
Hello Baz, I’m thinking of buying a T8 to sharpen my own knives etc, where do you buy the plates from to give the stone the different grinding coarseness and green bar for close to finishing the honing. I’m can’t seem to find what they call either
@@noeyedeer5813 great choice! Dont forget to send Tormek an email to inform them of my influence.
Diamond plates are found on eBay. Just search for diamond sharpening plates. Buy the ones with a thin black foam backing. They seem to last longer.
I use the Veritas chrome oxide wax bar.
Thanks!
@@johnclarke8180 WOW! Thanks John!
Greetings, nice video! Do you ever sharpen hand plane blades? A video on that would be good, also wood chisels! Thanks!
It's not only long but extends high as well, for cleavers.
congrats
Why do you blunt the blade before starting the grinding?
@@thomasstapel6824 to prove that its blunt. Otherwise trolls would be crying that I just "sharpened" an already sharp knife.
Are you making the blade blunt first just for demonstration or is there another reason?
@@dab. no, just for the demonstration to prove its blunt af.
Big ups
OG IS COLD WITH THE BLADE WORK.
I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Is cold a new word for good?
Hello. Very beautiful
Рай перфекциониста)
That's a big compliment. Thanks.
The new Tormek angle jig is much better!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You seriously need to invest in a ks-123. Absolutely worth every penny!
Fair enough. I find personally that I can set up a knife in half the time of the wm-200 days myself@@iSharpen
Fair enough. I personally find it to cut my time in half for setting up a knife@@iSharpen
Do you have a Tormek?
@@iSharpen Yes, a T7.
Are you using the new KJ-45 jig? It is supposed to solve that problem.
Idea for another viral short is to sharpen a popular edc knife. Everyone else does. Must be a million shorts on that orange Wal Mart knife.
Everybody's face at 2:27😬😱
Knife beater! 😂
once I'm past 4 in counting gloves and socks off.
Baz, what brand are those soft backed diamond sharpening plates? Have searched both eBay and Amazon but no success. Maybe not descriptive enough, though the English us a hoot! Thanks.
They're on eBay, they're all made in China. Search for "diamond sharpening plates" and get the ones with the thin black foam backing. They seem to last longer.
