Making a Silver & Brown Renaissance Gown | Vlog | Part One

- I'm happy to be introducing you to my "simple little weekend project" that turned into a 10 day project and has more than 150 pieces in the sleeves alone.
(And yes, the fact the grain on the paned portions is wrong will haunt me forever. The worst part is I did tests to see if it had a directional grain and decided it didn't because it was less prominent in artificial lighting.)
Also - there is no mention of recent events in this video (though recent events have really just sparked a discussion about problems plaguing the US for centuries). This was filmed over a month ago - and I ultimately like my content to be an escape from the rest of the world.
I’ve never used the community tabs on youtube before and thought it would be disingenuous to start now. However I've been pretty vocal about my stance on instagram - I don't think people should be treated differently because of the color of their skin. Black lives matter. Police brutality is wrong. I have nothing but respect for protestors and have donated to numerous BLM and police accountability charities. And would encourage people to do the same - here is a link! secure.actblue.com/donate/ab_mn
I don't tend to talk about politics on social media, but this isn't a political issue. It's a human rights issue. In the same vein, I also want to make it clear that I support people of all orientations, genders, ages, races, religions, etc. and hope one day we can all be treated equally. Because none of those things change your value as a person, or how deserving you are of good things and happiness.
As long as you don't use your beliefs or preferences to put down others then I have nothing but respect for you. This is a channel about making historically inspired clothing, historical beliefs or values have no place here.

it's always fun gauging how long angela spent on a project by how many different nail polishes she wears
Take a shot everytime Angela has a new nail color
LMFAO ikr
Actually she talked about it once and she just changes her polish when it chips so it really causes an illusion of time that isn't necessarily there
Title: "Making a Brown Renaissance Gown"
Me: * can't stop seeing it as black and silver * well maybe there is someone in the comments who also see it black * look at the comments *
Comments: * nobody talks about it *
Me: ... Ho no
It was black and silver in the most clips for me too 😂
For me it's black and silver too ^^
I see absolutely no brown. Maybe it’s how the camera picks up the colors?
Yep - looks black and silver/grey to me too...
Thank you for validating my recurring thought through the entire video!
"This is a channel about making historically inspired clothing, historical beliefs or values have no place here." 👏👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤❤Thank you Angela❤❤❤❤❤
Me, a statistics nerd: the top of the sleeve pattern looks like a normal distribution curve! Cool!
Your work is impeccable, i am a grandma who loves to see you work. Never had the time, took care of two boys and a girl. Now i will sew for my granddaughter a grandson. Take care of yourself the TRANSFORMATION and i just LOVE LOVE LITTLE WOMAN. im 66 and have seen most of the others. GOD BLESS
You are so amazing and wholesome and she needs to see this
Wholesome/10
Yeessssss I love the renaissance and I'm so happy you are doing this! The sewing community is very Victorian-centric and it's so nice to see other periods being explored!
Agreed! I am not at all interested in any part of remue Victorian era!!
"Swedish is such a beautiful language" 😂. Swede here and I think we sound ridiculous most of the time (in a funny way) but maybe many people feel like that about their native language.
Johanna JF don’t worry, Swedish is lovely. It’s Danish that is wonky! (Crossing my fingers that no Danes see my comment 😉)
i think it was sarcasm 😂
I love that 'moo' sound in your language.
German here and sometimes I can hear myself doing certain sch and ch sounds and its painful to the ears. And my throat. Tf came out of my mouth?
Swedish is a beautiful language. Very musical! Love singing in Swedish. 😁
I love these videos because i am never going to make anything. I just enjoy watching people make amazing garments ❤️
You can learn!
LOL I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one.
I follow a lot of channels like that 😁. Like Cold soap process, love those.
Your attention to detail is exquisite! I would love to see you make Glinda's gown from The Wizard of Oz!
Alternate Title: Angela Being Ambitious And Letting Her Projects Get Away From Her For 30 Minutes Straight.
Seriously it did come out absolutely lovely, I remember seeing wips of this on your Instagram! It has so much texture
I've been drafting and sewing a simple bucket hat for 2-3 of hours today, and I am so tired already. And it is not even finished yet. Seeing your video definitely helps! Such big projects make my small projects seem so much more doable😘thank you!
Such elegant and detailed work! The very dark colours just makes me think of a rich widow! The beading is lovely as well!
You are fabulous! All of this materials you are using in this project, are materials that I personally woulf never ever use. And at the beginning I was wondering, how this could ever be pleasant to my eyes? And then... you put them together and create something new, something that mirrored an Idea from an long gone age. An idea that maybe is catched exactly in this special decision for materials, because in every age a hunger for "new" and "different" could be the point of exclusive and precious dresses?
Whew! Can't believe how complicated the sleeves turned out. How you figured all of the pieces to fit together is well, I'm speechless.
This is going to turn out beautifully, cant wait to see the finished project!
This is a beautiful gown! You’ll be the belle of the ball when you wear it to an event! Fabulous job done! I’m still making face masks and circle skirts, but ya gotta start somewhere! Lol You’re very inspiring!
Go you with your masks and circle skirts! Masks have details and long seams/hems can be challenging to sew straight. I’m cheering you on for your work and efforts!
I want MORE Sewing Through The Decades 40s & 50s editiions
I love the Vlogs! I love being able to see the creative process, problem solving, and decision-making that goes into the costumes!
Oh this gown's design is so beautiful. I love the color. My goodness is that fabric gorgeous. I love all the texture💙🥰 The two drawers of embroidery floss is so perfectly colorful.
I just started sewing and it sure can be confusing. I'm learning as I go. You are amazing at it. Love all your gowns/dresses/hats/coatumes. I'm in awe. Lol.
please don't stress yourself, dear angela!! quality is definitely more important than quantity, and your health matters most of all. as a patreon patron, i can confirm that i'd rather wait and know you're ok. you're worth it!!
I love it when you do projects inspired by a particular artist, especially since each artist would really do their own impression of fashion at the time in their paintings. It’s so cool to see what you decide to do with fabric choices, trims, and structuring to get the look you’re going for. I love it.
Lovely to have you posting a vlog again. I'm really looking forward to the next part of the vlog for this and seeing the finished garment on you - especially the sleeves.
I'm already subscribed and will definitely wait to see the 2nd part! I follow this channel because you do such beautiful work and always deliver something unexpected (colors, fabrics, embellishments, etc that I never would have thought of). I enjoy your style and watching your creativity. Thank you for sharing!
I love how not even a pandemic will stop you nor does making your garments complicated on yourself hinder you creativity. I wish I had your resolve.
Holy crap, those sleeves are crazy complex! Kudos to you, Angela 👏👏👏👏
What a project! The detail and level of skill on this project really reflects your goals for more quality. Can't argue with the results of your labor either! It's the Little Black Dress of the Renaissance for looking so dark and mysterious on camera. Overall quite an enjoyable video, I can't wait to see how it all comes together and view the final fit!
This dress is gorgeous, this the darkest fabric I’ve seen you work with is beautiful I love the sheen.your an awesome seamstress.
Great, a new vid. I have been catching up on your old ones. Love your channel. 💕
You are "off the charts" talented Angela. Thank you so much for sharing all that you do..
You have taken the simple project to a whole new level! I love the tone shift as you see it from different angles. The dress is stunning! I'm eager to see the next half. Thanks so much for sharing your talent.
This dress came out so pretty, I enjoyed watching how you put the sleeves together.
What a beautiful dress!!! 😍 😍 😍 It's always stunning to watch you putting a garment together, starting with only some reference pictures, a daring fabric choice and your vivid imagination! The result is truly fabulous! 👍😊
As a side note, the name Cranach sounds a little different in German. The ch-sound is like the last sound in the Scottish word for lake, loch. 😉
I had to go back to hear it again to understand she meant Cranach :)
Trying to tone down my green eyes for all the awesomeness that you can afford! Lol I did finally get a dressmakers dummy! I’m so excited! It makes designing and sewing my own clothes SEW much easier!
It’s looking great! Going to watch part two! Keep inspiring young lady!
💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚❤️
Just gotta love when progress gets progressively more complicated. It's like making a mess and having to clean it up😂
I know these videos take a long time to make and they are probably really difficult, but I appreciate how much time and effort you put into your work. You are so inspiring to me and I love watching your videos. They are the highlight of my month.
love love love all the puffs!! this dress is seriously georgous!!!
Beautiful work! Looking forward to part two 🤗
Before even watching the video, I just want to say how much I miss your videos! You are so fun to watch.
Looks lovely!!! Cant wait to see how it all comes together!
Amazing skill! So impressed by the complexity of the detailed sleeves.
I love fabrics like that poly faille. I just want to glitter and glow where ever I go.
Those sleeves!! You're amazing ... can't wait for Part II 💚💚💚
I was so excited to see a new video. You are adorable I love everything you make. Thanks for making my weekend awesome 😊
Wish I could see the true colors, the garment is gorgeous! Happy Birthday! Thank you for sharing your talent with us, I am over 65, so still quarantining. Your video is much appreciated.
WOW! It turned out so, so pretty. It's so much fun to see you do more Renaissance wear again.
What a grand dress! Looking forward to seeing the end result, it's sure to be stunning!
Thanks for such great details! It is an adventure to see such a big project go together. I enjoy watching without doing all that trial and error. My little projects seem a less daunting after seeing that sleeve. WOW wonderful job.
Dear Angela, thank you so much for sharing. So much work....I have a huge respect of all of your projects.
I think it looks quite metallic, almost in a knight in shining armor way, almost like it could be steam punked too. It almost doesn't even look real. The final shots of it on the dress form I thought were pictures, not the actual gown. This dress has a very magical quality to it! I can't wait to see it modeled! 💜 Angela is a pure visionary! Truly a creative genius!
Ah, the dress is so beautiful. I can't wait to see it on you. Please keep inspiring, you are so talented. Your future is so bright. Stay safe.
Yay! So glad to see you're here. 💞💞 Was wondering where you've gone!! Also... Anyone else wonder where all these magnificent gowns get stored?? Angela I think you should do a closet tour!!! ::Drools::
These sleeves are most definitely my kind of sleeves
The end result is just stunning!!!
I love that Angela is also down with Jeremy Wade, I got obsessed with that show and used to watch it to fall asleep to lol
that is extraordinary. i love the fabric, but i especially like the silver trim. cannot wait for part two.
I love all your videos. And it was wonderful to hear from you in this vlog!! I love the color of this bodice!! It shows up a cool tone grey on my phone so when you said brown I was like ah....sure lol 😂 can't wait to see part 2!
One of my favourite sewing fairys on the internet ♡
I had a look at the paintings of the gowns and wow, you are right they are so different from the styles in other countries at that time. So cool! I really like them.
I loved looking through the links of the art that inspired the design!
Wow Angela, that dress is GORGEOUS!! 😍😍😍 The textures and colours are next level, I love it!!
I love that you let yourself get carried away sometimes. It pays off 👍💖🎩
That dress looks like a black and white picture, but in real life idk if that makes any sense haha
I love love love the color and textures going on in this dress!
This is so cool and involved and impressive! Your videos are amazing! What you do is so satisfying and so cool to watch. I struggle not to scrub through videos because I’m impatient and bad at sitting still but your videos are so jam packed with the good, good knowledge that I never do this.
Also, Angela, you’re so stinking cute! Your hair colour and your colouring in general is so niceee and with your eye colour too /chef’s kiss/ you’re stunning! 🥰
it is so beautiful. the color of the dress is amazing, and the amount of detail is staggering. can't wait to watch you finish it :D
This is so beautiful!! I can't wait to see part 2!
WOW! That’s some serious work. The result is outstanding.
Wow - what a beautiful gown! You are amazing.
It's gonna be amazing 😍
Amazing work and such a beautiful gown.
So, amazing...just looks wonderful....thanks for sharing...
fantastic Ms. Clayton! can't wait for you to finish this then the peacock dress!
Amazing! Off to watch vlog part two!😊🌟💥💫💜
Wow!! So beautiful !
I can’t believe I haven’t stumbled across your channel before! You’re such a bad ass goddess. Thanks for all the details and details!
Thank you for posting this up. I love your vlogs.
Just love this gown, so elegant. I’m also a massive fan of River Monsters😂
Dear Ms. Clayton, Thank you for showing the sleeves. I didn't think to do different strips of fabric to make sleeves. I will so have to use this design.
It’s surprising how quickly a project can go from a quick one-day thing to spending over a week because of something not working as planned. I was making a circle skirt and the waistband ended up being a little bit small, so instead of a zipper I’m doing laces and that’s a lot more complicated for a beginner like me. But hey, I’m having fun with it 😄
Was watching this whilst sewing pockets into my dress. This video was making the process much more enjoyable :D
About five minutes in I checked my playback speed settings because I thought it might be set to 1.5x or 2x but nope, Angela actually speaks that fast and has that much energy! Beautiful dress :) Reminds me a little of the one the Catherine of France character wears in Civilization VI!
The silhouette is so nice! I actually thought the two fabrics Were a bit gaudy, but they work really nicely all together in the project!
Stunning dress. Been hanging out for a new vid from yourself. Always wonderful to see your work.
Hehe my mum is obsessed with river monsters 😂
i have been hand-sewing tee shirt material onto my short sleeve tees so that i can run around outside without sunburning my arms, and i love reality tv for hand-sewing--it's entertaining to listen to, but you don't have to watch-watch to enjoy it.
So beautiful!! Reminds me of the court dresses at the start of Orlando
Simply incredible!
it's gorgeous! i'm looking forward to part 2 :)
I love River Monsters!!!
Looks good Angela!! 💕
AHHHHHH THIS DRESS! I'M SO EXCITED!
Love the dress and wow what a lot of detail!
OMG it's soo gorgeous I love those sleeves
so gorgeous! you are so unbelievably talented!
What luscious fabric!
Nobody is gonna talk about that STUNNING jeweled/glittery/sparkly spider piece at 9:28?
Goodness how lovely!!!!!!!
Sewing with Discovery shows in the background, a favorite habit of mine too :)
Happy Early Birthday! Thanks yet again for sharing your creative process with us once again. Your design sense is always amazing to me, who has very little. It’s always enjoyable to see your creativity and the skill with which you bring that creative imagination to life. I feel I learn just by watching you go through your process. I am always happy to make use of else’s creative process and use a pattern to make things. I do better just following instructions and making minor fitting changes as needed.
Also, what is your favorite part of making a costume, item of clothing? The design, the draping, the trouble shooting, the actual sewing, etc.
If you’ve already answered this question, please forgive me, I’ve gone through many of your videos, but not all. What would be your favorite places to look for fabrics in the NYC garment district. Specifically for lightweight cottons, coating wools, linen, and insertion lace. I have projects to do when we get back to the US, and we may end up flying into New York. It would be virtuous to support the garment district after their shutdown, no? Of course, the garment district may not be open by then anyway, so it may be a moot point.
