NIL should only be money a player can make from endorsements, appearances, merchandise sales, etc... no money coming from the football programs. The portal should allow a player to transfer only once in his college career without sitting out a season. If he chooses to transfer a second time then the player must sit out a year.
Agree 1000%. These kids are screwing themselves in the long run by transferring every year. It won't prepare them for contractual obligations at the pro level either. Your solution seems a good middle ground.

At least Alabama can always claim that before the degradation of college football and the “pay for play”, we had the 2 GOATS of all college coaches ever. Sad how college football has gone downhill.

Funny how my interests change. I held NBA season tickets for 5 years. Relinquished em when Jerry Sloan was done. Took a big step back from the NFL when the kneeling became a thing. College football has been my final interest in sports. I'm not an Alabama guy, but I have been impressed with Coach Saban and his willingness to bring in "cast off " coaches, mentor them, restore their credibility and send them on their way to success. Outstanding leadership. I don't envision continuing allegiance to college football. The Big Media influence is souring my sports experience.
You had no issues, I guess, for all these years that they paid the kids peanuts under the table only to make millions off their backs, only to return afterwards and penalize them for doing so. Coaches leaving for new opportunities when they got ready, but the kid had to sit out a year if he transferred to be eligible. Nick sure had no problems then, and neither did you. Those universities, the NCAA, and all of you who cosigned the modified slavery of the archaic college football system are complicit in the molestation of college athletes bodies and their families. Glad he is gone, because the game has changed for the better, and it can only do that if the poison is cut out.
Paying college players will result in an escalation of salaries and an increase of tuition costs for average students. College has been a football factory for years but this will destroy colleges as institutions of higher learning
At Al and I would think most of the schools, the athletic dept is mostly independently from the school. Things like new buildings or enhancements can be joint efforts.
17-18 year old kids with no life experience no special skills other than they can catch or throw a ball, are so entitled to think they deserve millions of dollars, a free education, and the opportunity to continue throwing a ball for the next 10 years for millions more. This is entitlement at its fullest !
I believe DeBoer got 10 million to come to BAMA. A Tide fan myself, I've never been more excited for A-Day & this new season!! So much to be excited about with this newly assembled staff. I've got no problem going into this new era of Alabama Football as the perpetual underdog. Bring it!! We got this. RTR4LIFE 💪🐘🔥
Along with the reasons Nick Saban gave. There are other reasons that deals with the NIL and the portal he did not dive deep into. Now Alabama and other colleges are having to re-recruit players, sometimes on a monthly basis. Just because the players agents get higher offers from other colleges. No coach wants to deal with that. A head coach and the staff already spent a lot of time and effort recruiting. Now recruiting has turned into a 24\7 365 job. At some point any coach has to weigh quality of personal life vs the job. It's one of the reasons you have head coaches stepping down to take lesser positions, or seeking to go into the NFL as assistants. Simply because they do not want to deal with the extra stress and headaches head coaches have to deal with now with the NIL, portal and players who are simply worried about how much money they are going to make now vs later in life. Either in the NFL or in the private sector with a college degree. I will say now the percentage of players receiving a college degree will go down drastically. Which only hurts them later in life.
If you are Kalen Deboer from South Dakota, where do you want your family to be in this upcoming tumultuous time? A dying, liberal Godless Seattle, or a growing Tuscaloosa in the heart of conservatism and the Bible Belt? The decision was easy for a father with young daughters.
Coach Saban adapted and overcame every change and challenge that happened to college football during his tenure at Bama. He retired because he is 71 years old for heaven’s sake and wants to enjoy his time that he has left with his family. NIL wouldn’t have pushed him out if he was 20 years younger. Father time is undefeated. RTR.
I once was a season ticket holder to Nascar prior to Bubba rope ,once was a avid NFL fan before the kneeling, a life long college football fan roll Tide I'll never buy another ticket nor waste my time supporting 18 yr old pampered millionaires. Like Saban I to in my small capacity am OUT ! "GONE FISHING " !
Mike Norvell probably stayed at FSU bc the NIL is in a better state than at Bama. I think there wasn't enough job security for Norvell at Bama either. With NIL still underdeveloped at Bama and the fan base being so demanding, staying @FSU where you know you can secure a raise and extras in a new contract, at a place where you've already won over the fans, Boosters, AD, and President, and where you have already laid all the ground work, seems like the better option, especially with the potential conference change on the horizon. I guess we'll never really know though.
NIL above $200K should just go in pool and spread it to the team. No one is poor. No one is making 10x what the assistant coach they don’t feel like listening to that day. College football has always paid players. I am trying to finance my son’s college education I sure wish he was a good enough athlete to be “exploited” and get a free education. Getting a free college education IS getting paid.
NIL and the portal ushered in a new era of entitlement. Some kids used to go to college to get away from their home environment. Now in some instances, the family and friends hound the crap out of them for money.
Good for Saban for not allowing the tail to wag the dog. The transfer portal will be the undoing of college football and basketball. Student athletes need to be held accountable for their decisions. Same with the coaches that recruited them. What happened to commitment and loyalty? BTW I didn't know that the coaches could pay the NIL money.
He got to a point where NIL and transfer portal was changing the game. It’s all about the money now and that might be a good thing. College football is more popular than ever. We shall see if it continues under the current environment.
You can lock assistants into contracts and not allow them to leave. Give me 3 years would be my request. After that you can take a promotion out of the program. If they wanted more money it would be ties to staying extra years.
Mr Calvin C saying Alabama hasn’t been dominant for a long time speaks about your level of understanding what is in front of you , however your team that you coached is the best, which team is that?
Asking a lot for a 73 year old coach to have to deal with all this new crap. I still think players should have to sit a year to transfer if they have not yet achieved their degree.
How many times is this dude going to assume things based on zero factual evidence. He assumed Mike wasnt a serious choice. Wrong. Dude cant say "I dont know"@@J2415J
Fig this was reason assumed when retired. This was the main reason Saban in the NFL was so short and went back to college at first chance to bolt back.

That's where Sabans rehabilitation coaching program started. Then Kiffin got fired before the Natty Sark was an assistant under Kiffin then ended up Coaching against Clemson when Kiffin was let go. Then Sark ended up getting the Falcons job . Then Saban got NYG head coach Deball he wins a natty leaves back to NFL because of he hated college football. Then Sark was hired from Falcons after he was let go. So, yeah, I believe Saban went after Kiffin to learn hurry up concepts and spread type game. Then Sarks saved after being a drunk in USC (Both) and Washington!!! So not true bud..
Saban mentioned the fact that a scholarship was a contract and that recruits wanted guaranteed playing time and NIL money it they would transfer a couple of days after he retired. It was no secret.
Saban cares more about the big picture for a player. He cares more about making more than just great players. He cares about making great MEN that is why this stuff probably bothers Saban more than most coaches. I am not a Bama fan. But I can appreciate not just what Saban done on the field. But giving his players much more than football.
Norvell is cry baby and the way his players acted speaks volumes. NO ONE sat out when Bama was screwed out of the playoff in 2022. Instead of losing by 60, they destroyed the Big12 champ to prove they were screwed.
A lot of high end college athletes are essentially football or basketball or other sport majors Collegrs should be honest and design ‘degree’ programs in the specific sport. Under these conditions athletes should be treated like students in any other academic major. If a student in other majors could ran NIL type money they certainly would. No college guarantees a student a job in their chosen major. Athletes would run the same risks. I think we would all be better off to acknowledge that these kids are fegacto majors in their sports and build degree programs around that concept. I recognize there are problems and difficult irs in implementing this across the board but it should be discussed.
The biggest problem in college football right now is the NCAA, conferences and refs are controlling outcomes of games. Lets not pretend we dont see whats happening right in front of our faces.
those of us old school fans saw this comming at least 5 yrs. ago. we have gone from in my lifetime getting scholorship for education first (never hear that anymore) loyalty and love of school and teammates.. well you have to agree this stuff means nothing anymore. like so many things in todays world people are burning down there own houses. for greed. 18 and 19 yr olds now only look and how much and how fast when if they are good enough the money comes in nfl by 21 . now we have players in college making more then there coaches . we have nfl players making 25 million a year or more. im not saying this out of envy but the sport will not be here much longer and it allready is not reckognizable, it is a SHAME what is gone on and it is not coming back now. it really makes me sad. i am 69 retired actually on disability and i still loved following game now who ever your team is you will never know who is on it . sad sad days
It’s not the NIL killing college football yea it is a nail in the coffin. But college football is dying because of the pampered, self important players. There is no team concept anymore among 70-80% of the players it’s all about me. I quit watching years ago, because of the BS that goes on in the games. Players dropping the ball at the one yard line because they are too busy strutting for the camera and watching their end zone celebration on the jumbo screen!! Players pulling away from teammates so the camera is only on them. From grade school up football has created a bunch of narcissistic athletes. They are coddled from the day they show any skill at the game and the further they go in the sport the worse it gets. That’s why IMO college football and the NFL are unwatchable.
"Student" athletes on scholarships or receiving any compensation from the university should be required to achieve their degree or pay back all the money that was spent on them while at the university. Or maybe the universities should be requiring a percentage of the players' future income as they helped to develop and make players professional player material...much like a spouse receives in a divorce for paying for and providing support so their spouse could go to school to achieve a better future career/salary.
That’s ridiculous. No other student at the university is required to repay scholarships or compensation they receive from the university if they don’t graduate. You do know that students work on every university campus and they get paid. Why can’t athletes that generate millions of dollars in revenue and publicity for their university?
Sports and other companies are all about the short-term monetary gain rather than the long term, which is made very clear nowadays. Their are no more discussions about how this will affect the long-term monetary gains only about how to make the quickest buck right now. It's the "get in, make as much money as possible, and get out" mentality that's destroying sports (especially collegiate sports) and every major company right now that's tanking.
@mas5867 the great thing about college was it was an amateur sport. Yes, there were periodic under the table money bags, but for the most part it was young men trading there football talent for an education, and possibly improving enough for the NFL. Your team matter. The players who chose your school mattered. Every Saturday was important. Like I said above, now it is becoming a semi-pro league, which is the NFL with worst players. Through in the new tournament playoff system, and now every game during the regular season becomes less important.
@billybubba8344 the players will still care bec they know they are still being evaluated. Now, I totally agree with your comment about the 12 team playoff ruining the importance of other games in a season. There are teams ranked around the top 10 that don't deserve to be in playoffs. Esp since on any given play, a better deserving team can lose a crucial player in one of the meaningless 1st playoff games. And then that deserving team's hopes are ruined and for what. I gave up football in 2023 after TN's 2 ridiculous 4th down calls. I was gonna watch through the end of the season, but that was enough for me.
Why on earth would he stay with Washington? His team played the game of their life and Texas played the worst game of their life and it still took absolutely perfect passes to beat Texas. Then they got their asses handed to them by Michigan. Teams on the west coast cannot compete with the rest of college football on a weekly basis.
Prediction! NIL in college sports will destroy the games and the Colleges. I believe Black athletes will head the demise! It’s all about money now not about education. How many of these athletes even passed classes and or got a Degree is mind-boggling! My guess is 60-70% of players/athletes did not earn those degrees?
No…NIL contracts will go a long way to fix it. NIL will create more parity and a better experience for everyone. Most athletes do earn degrees and NIL will actually encourage players to stay in school 4 or 5 years. A player getting $500k a year might decide to stick around instead of heading to the NFL early. Maybe they should get 6 years of eligibility, so they can earn their degrees and maybe graduate ones. It is nearly impossible for football players to take a full load of classes, particularly in the fall.
Saban is full of shit. Like anyone at those colleges care about the education of those young men? Those players care about money and playing to showcase their skills.
Saban acts like he’s the first person in his mid 70’s who didn’t like that an industry moved on without him. Saban thought he WAS bigger than the business of CFB. He isn’t. Saban has an ego and insecurities just like anybody else. He enjoyed driving around campus in his 6 figure cars.
Absolutely we are living in the time where college athletics that we know and love has died!!! In none of the conversations we are hearing is anyone talking about getting a degree!! The importance of an education!! It’s gone
use your own brain instead of regurgitating what Saban said.. Saban made 10 million year with absolutely NO risk from an injury ending everything. Of course the players want money now.
Football players at that level are lucky if they have years in their craft. They should get paid. They are the ones risking their bodies (and minds) so you can be entertained on Saturdays for 4 hours. Pay them what they are worth!
@@MrTdubb641 Then he was an absolute idiot. Florida St is stuck in nowhere land in a lost conference. He should have jumped all over the Alabama job. I hope something just as good comes up next year for him because the ACC is a financial dead end.

Right now Nil has no rules same for the transfer portal which to me is dangerous for the athletes. Are the players signing contracts with these boosters or companies what guarantees do the players have. Remember these are really young players as for the portal this will happen. A player jumps from Bama to Texas for more Nil then arrives at Texas then finds out the sponsor backed out of the deal. What about boosters going after jr and high school players right now thats legal u got to have rules to protect the players and the universities. Everyone is afraid of lawsuits use my Bama to Texas example what if the player sues Texas for breaking agreement because booster decided to back out of the deal. Hopefully all this gets worked out in a few years.
A lot of adults make decisions solely based on financial raises then tell kids to not worry about money. I understand we need guardrails and rules for it. Just very weird messaging the way it’s said
How dare the players want to make the most they can. cuz you know the coaches don't ever think of it that way. When something's making multiple millions of dollars off of your success you deserve a piece of the pie.
I'd love to hear a source for the Norvell to Bama claim. That's not been floated from any Nole pundit. Too easy to make such assertions without the evidence.
The league has cheated for Saban for at least a decade, but NIL made it harder putting other teams on equal footing. He knew to save his legacy he had to quit soon.
I just don't know how teams build culture and consistency with the revolving door of players transferring every year chasing money. I figured Saban would be done after last season. There will be more resignations to come under this new wild wild west of NIL and the transfer portal.
All they had to do is designate the players as employees and pay them a fair wage. Instead they fought it. Now we have NIL and they have lost control. When change is inevitable and you choose to fight that change instead of helping craft change don't complain about the outcome.
Free education, free great food and snacks, free medical, free housing at any University is not cheap and most students wish they had the perks atheltes have. No, we pay them and they are like any human, I'll go to wjho pays the most and then transfer if I don't like it. Make them sign a contract like paid Professionals have to. You are paying them, they are Pros now.
So Nick had the upper hand bc Alabama paid huge money under the table for years to get the best and now other teams can match or outbid Nick...go cry me a river Nick. How many times did Nick move to another job for the money and it was all about him.
Both can be true and are, kids come to the coach now and it's a hassle, kids are spoiled rotten/selfish, on the other hand Nick never had to deal with why Alabama had a top 3 recruiting class for the last 20 years. He must be the most loveable person to have ever existed.😂😂😂
Why didn't he say what really happened, NIL leveled the playing field. No longer was Alabama guaranteed 4& 5* just because the school name was Alabama. Now they are gonna have to come out of pocket like everyone else just to compete. He was smart to jump ship before they became irrelevant.....
I think if there not passing their classes or even going to class then they should lose their scholarship and have to pay their own way with their NIL Money.
Mike was the choice. You assumed Mike wasn't a serious contender. You were wrong. You are now assuming again. It sounds so tough to admit, I understand. But you're just making stuff up at this point. Its okay to say " I dont know" instead of talking in absolutes. Since when is it hard to recruit at FSU? Logo recruits itself.
I soo love LK!! I don’t understand why my Bama didn’t hire LK? This guy is soo in over his head!! I really think Greg Byrne thinks this guy is such a great coach or winner that he can win with less talent than everyone else? He is Bryan Harsin 102….I don’t understand why my fellow Bama fans & Bama media thinks that Greg Byrne is an elite AD that just hires a coach in less than 72hrs ( his cocky promise) & it’s gonna work out? I think Bama fans think because he hired a great out of the box basketball coach that makes him qualified to replace the GOAT? LK would have been the right & only choice for me. But Mike Norvelle would have been a better safer choice than this guy!! And despite the fact that he has a 5-0 record against two guys Bama may have wanted, how did he fair in the NC game against superior talent & coaching? Did we give him a pass because he was at Washington?
Mr Pony Boy Curtis both Saban and Irban Meyer went to coach in the NFL and failed miserably while in college they are the all time great, if you asked yourself that then the answer is clearly what Saban said in the retirement speech, I can’t compete on even level field, saying I am not a coach, I am a manager of a football team

He’s not gonna play this weird game of “coach better not yell at me or I’m gonna be transferring” or “I’m gonna need to get paid more…”
I guess you could say Saban was a bit of a naysayer
Milrod asking for money. That's Theivery.
False. He admitted it partly had to do with Michigan beating him and the way his players handled losing with no class.

Saban and Dabo were several years ahead in NIL. It was ok when he was handing out cars to recruits and he was making 10 Mil a year but when players need a cut? Sorry but I don't feel sorry!
It’s interesting that Chip Kelly said screw it and just went to OSU as a coordinator. It’s probably not a huge pay cut and the NIL stuff isn’t his direct problem anymore.
No, he said screw it because he was at a crappy 💩💩💩 college and can’t win. He can’t hang. I digress carry on with that stop 🛑 it. Will you give yourself .. a break if you don’t give us 🤣🤣🤣🤣
At least Alabama can always claim that before the degradation of college football and the “pay for play”, we had the 2 GOATS of all college coaches ever.
Sad how college football has gone downhill.
You had 1 GOAT. Bear Bryant's tenure was full of ridiculously claimed natties amidst other considerations.. Example: He retired 0-4 Vs Notre Dame
Saban was 0-8 against AU teams that finished with 9 wins which is way worst to AL fans than being 0-4 against ND.
If you believe those "goats" weren't paying players long before NIL came along........................
@@mas5867 so, we're just saying anything these days, are we? How many legitimate titles did Bear have again? I'll wait
@@mas5867 7 national titles in a 15, 16 year span is bananas. There's no statistic you can pull out of your rear-end to deny that Saint Nick is the GOAT and it's not even close for that matter.

Great stuff guys. I agree with all your points regarding Coach Saban, NIL, and the things that should be important. ROLL TIDE!!!
Paying college players will result in an escalation of salaries and an increase of tuition costs for average students. College has been a football factory for years but this will destroy colleges as institutions of higher learning
The genie is out of the bottle
At Al and I would think most of the schools, the athletic dept is mostly independently from the school. Things like new buildings or enhancements can be joint efforts.
17-18 year old kids with no life experience no special skills other than they can catch or throw a ball, are so entitled to think they deserve millions of dollars, a free education, and the opportunity to continue throwing a ball for the next 10 years for millions more. This is entitlement at its fullest !
Not just education...Housing, Special nutrition, coaching, strength and conditioning. All for free

The paying to college players killed college football. It just doesn’t know it’s dead yet. Saban knows this and is leaving before it gets worse.
A big Amen sir.

NIL is killing college sports.
For who?
Yeah, much better that everyone else involved make the money than the guys that put their personal health on the line.
@@dr.markevers8331guess all the likes disagree with you😅

The SEC has been paying players for a long time. Now he's crying because everyone else gets to do it?
NIL above $200K should just go in pool and spread it to the team. No one is poor. No one is making 10x what the assistant coach they don’t feel like listening to that day.
College football has always paid players.
I am trying to finance my son’s college education I sure wish he was a good enough athlete to be “exploited” and get a free education. Getting a free college education IS getting paid.
NIL and the portal ushered in a new era of entitlement. Some kids used to go to college to get away from their home environment. Now in some instances, the family and friends hound the crap out of them for money.
Too true! Plenty kids get shitty harmful advice from greedy family and friends. But no one wants to talk about it
Good for Saban for not allowing the tail to wag the dog.
Everyone said Saban was whining when he warned us all about NIL and the transfer portal.
Only morons said that
You can lock assistants into contracts and not allow them to leave. Give me 3 years would be my request. After that you can take a promotion out of the program. If they wanted more money it would be ties to staying extra years.
Maybe we need two "leagues" of college football: athletes who happen to be students, and students who happen to be athletes.
It's coming
Mr Calvin C saying Alabama hasn’t been dominant for a long time speaks about your level of understanding what is in front of you , however your team that you coached is the best, which team is that?

What ? You're wrong about Saban ! Saban Hired Sark and Kiffin both after they had horrible incidents and were at failing problems. Both were young and both had issues.
When money is a college football player's main reason for playing, game corruption/bribery will become quite common.
I guess you work for free
You must be new to watching college football
Contracts are coming
How do you take what one person says. How many players did you interview?
Saban cares more about the big picture for a player. He cares more about making more than just great players. He cares about making great MEN that is why this stuff probably bothers Saban more than most coaches. I am not a Bama fan. But I can appreciate not just what Saban done on the field. But giving his players much more than football.
Norvell is cry baby and the way his players acted speaks volumes.
NO ONE sat out when Bama was screwed out of the playoff in 2022. Instead of losing by 60, they destroyed the Big12 champ to prove they were screwed.
Just like Georgia beat the crap out of FSU. They had something to prove instead of whining
Woke is destroying these kids minds. I agree with coach. They are just like entitled karens, which come from the woke idea.
I think college football needs a commissioner Saban would be a good one but there needs to be some organization and rules to go by.
Nil and wide open transfer portal have ruined college football. Its just the nfl with worse players.
How? after the dust settles, how was football ruined for any given year. Everything levels out.

NIL has made more parity in college football. It’s fantastic .
Saban the best, is gona be missed and he is right.
I miss the real voices of Nashville on the radio and airways
Saban is full of shit. Like anyone at those colleges care about the education of those young men? Those players care about money and playing to showcase their skills.
Saban acts like he’s the first person in his mid 70’s who didn’t like that an industry moved on without him. Saban thought he WAS bigger than the business of CFB. He isn’t. Saban has an ego and insecurities just like anybody else. He enjoyed driving around campus in his 6 figure cars.
Wait until schools start making trades mid-season.
UW offered KD as much as Alabama or real close to it
I don't think there's anything shocking about Saban's comments about why he retired.
Absolutely we are living in the time where college athletics that we know and love has died!!! In none of the conversations we are hearing is anyone talking about getting a degree!! The importance of an education!! It’s gone
Players look at short-term not long term.
use your own brain instead of regurgitating what Saban said.. Saban made 10 million year with absolutely NO risk from an injury ending everything. Of course the players want money now.

They decided on Deboer because norvell sits when he pees. He’s in a class with Ryan Day and Lincoln Riley.

FSU has always done more with less resources. Mike knows what’s coming when FSU will be with common resources.

So you can leave your players at any time but they can't make money they can make sense

I agree
Mr Pony Boy Curtis both Saban and Irban Meyer went to coach in the NFL and failed miserably while in college they are the all time great, if you asked yourself that then the answer is clearly what Saban said in the retirement speech, I can’t compete on even level field, saying I am not a coach, I am a manager of a football team
