I do. The morons say he "gave up" or "quit" but that's plain dumb. Coach Saban doesn't quit, he kicks butt and changes things 😂 he knew he could not actively do anything while being a coach because the same morons would accuse him of bias and only being selfish. Someone will profit from the name, image, and likeness of a college athlete. The question is, should it be the university OR the athlete? Which one? Which one already profits from ticket sales? Which one already profits from tv? Which one already profits from donations from the alumni to the endowment fund? People aren't asking the right questions here. And Coach Saban, no matter how much I respect this man, did not dignify those questions.

Coach Saban wasn't coaching out of the kindness of his heart, but was extremely well compensated for his labor and rightly so. Why was it acceptable for those entities to enrich themselves? I’ll meet you halfway and agree the universities should be spreading the wealth more than they do. But those “pennies” are worth about $80k. My non-athletic kids will be paying student loans the rest of their lives, and they didn’t have the benefit of personalized therapists, nutritionists, doctors, tutors, or handlers to guide them through the day to day complexities of cultural and academic life on campus.
Even the back-up kicker who rode the bench all 4 years gets those basic perks, plus a college degree worth more than my house.
Knowing how difficult it is for first-gen students to navigate all of that by themselves, and to pay for it for the next 30 years, I’m pretty damned angry when someone wants to pretend that isn’t valuable and call it “pennies”.

We aren’t against players being compensated, or making money via NIL. What’s happening now is pay for play. These collectives are paying players just to commit and play for that team. They have absolutely no value with it comes to NIL as they haven’t played a down. If you are really for the players you would be on board to, because when they come in and underperform that money is no longer available. They don’t get payed millions up front, they get payed over three years in most cases. Not living up to the hype? The collectives just won’t pay and you will have to find a better deal or settle when what you’re actually getting. These contracts are drawn up in a way to where NIL is based around performance in a round about way. On top of that, when a player signs a $4 million deal it’s worded in a way where they have the “opportunity” to make “up to 4 million”. They just aren’t given that money. The Athletic posted several NIL contracts the past two years and every one of them has an out. The current system is bad for teams/coaches and terrible for players. Every player deserves millions IMO for putting their bodies on the line, but they are being screwed in this current system as well.

First of all, this is the hustle. College athletics is a monetary aspect of college. Yes, it has changed the game. It has allowed athletes to have financial rights to their image and likeness. Colleges have used this to their advantage forever. It is not set up to create opportunity. It is set up to create monetary gains. The athletes can now be represented and own part of the value they bring. The table is bigger and the seats are more. Some athletes will make money when they never could have before and it may be the only time for them. Others will be more successful and that financial aspect may grow for them. This is the new way. The old guard has to speak against it because they have held the cards for so long. But make no mistake some athletes get judged by coaches and may NEVER start a game. In that way, the coaches contribute to the LACK of opportunity.
    Great roundtable discussion.

But too much money in the palm can quickly corrupt a person if not tempered with wisdom and discipline. Although everyone wants more money, obtaining large sums quickly can and has also ruined lives. Woody Hayes once said that discipline implies "disciples", those who provide discipline help guide young student athletes to become better people, in life beyond football. Coach Saban has been a disciple to many players over the years, but he may just make his greatest impact on student athletes for future generations with his efforts after retirement. Excellent work. You're missing the point. It's a matter of developing future leaders of the nation. Not just professional athletes, these rules have an affect on all student athletics and most of these athletes will become leaders in business and politics. Did you hear what Saban said about the athletes becoming more entitled and less coachable due to the current rules? Do we want future generations more entitled and less coachable? On top of that the transfer portal is causing the graduation rate to drop. That's exactly what our country doesn't need, future generations of lazy entitled uneducated adults. And these are the college educated leaders of the future we're talking about.
If Congress can make changes now that have a positive impact on future generations of college athletes it will have an overall positive effect on the country as a whole. It's not just for college football. Although that's the sport that has been affected the most. And when was the last time Congress did anything positive for the country. If they can agree on something like this maybe it could open their partisan eyes to see what's possible when they work together to improve the country instead of fighting all the time.

Total BS comment. If you can’t see the difference, then you’ll never get it. Universities hire people to teach. Ideally, they develop people to become professionals in their chosen craft. In the case of college football, universities pay head coaches significantly to develop players to do more than just play football, especially since a pro football career might last four years or less. Plus, football brings huge income to the university, especially for winning programs. Players already receive a free education, free food, free room and board, free transportation, free clothes, etc. They are not professional athletes. They are teenaged students. If on their own away from the university if they could sell their name, image, or likeness I see no issue with it. But there should be no assistance from the university whatsoever.

@@josephroberts6865 Your argument doesn't stand up to basic Economics 101, Workers are paid in labor markets based on the value they bring to the firm (their marginal product of labor). Saying they receive free edu, room and board and should be happy with that doesn't hold up when the value they bring is potentially worth several times this amount depending on the player. Workers who are sign contracts more than certainly consider the wage offer when making a decision, not simply due to greed but in order to improve the standard of living of their family and themselves. Concerning your potential conflict of interest argument, this is no different from an employer of, say, Goldman Sachs who uses his knowledge to engage in related entrepreneurial activities while still working for the company. There are no conflicts of interest concerning the current state of NIL deals, i.e. athletes are not receiving money to get inside information concerting other teams. Engaging in entrepreneurial activities while in college is legal and beneficial concerning ones personal development. Ultimately the question of its impact is an empirical one that should be tested with data using econometric techniques that establish casualty. Id be happy to read the results of your findings if you choose to pursue such a project.

The education fee must be paid before the player is eligible to transfer via the portal.

Or tie it to a multi-year commitment. You want this nice contract, you have to stay at the university X amount of years to get it. Where in the world can you get lots of money with no commitment? Don't fulfill your end of the contract, you nullify it and get nothing, that includes going to the NFL early. Hell, even early sign-on bonuses at jobs require some kind of commitment, like a year commit or you pay it all back. What are we teaching these kids nowadays, you can skirt responsibility when you feel like it. The world does not work like that, especially not the NFL.

All parties make revenue consistent with their performance. Recruitment and retention should follow suit. Clearly, there is a lot left to determine.
