To Malta by Aeronca C3….. well, sort of

  • I recently had to go to Malta for recurrent training. I dislike driving to and from London regularly, the Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police dislikes me (due to my enthusiastic driving style) and there was a rail strike on the Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I decided to take the Aeronca to White Waltham and leave it there whilst I continued to Malta.
    This is not clickbait. I rode for a total of 5:30 in the two dreadful Airbus(es?) and 7:50 in the mighty Aeronca, so the Aeronca flying was far more significant, as well as being enjoyable and far safer due to the proper control systems.
    For the odd amongst you who like statistics;
    The journey to White Waltham took 3:30 and used 36 litres of fuel. The journey home took 4:20 and used 40 litres of fuel. The difference in burn is countered by the amount of lift I was able to find by flying on the windward side of ridges in the strong southerly. No wonder Jack Parham's glider conversion flew so well!
    Average groundspeed home was 41 kts, so 19kts headwind all the way.

    Thanks it is amazing these days to be able to ride along on UA-cam in aircraft like this. It used to be just magazine photos and artcles on what it is like. Laurie. NZ ❤❤

    Pity the donglers didn't find you a nice temporary hanger space. Epic trip in the C3 and she seemed to cope very well with the famed billiard table smooth surface at White Waltham we all love so much!

    Adorable Aeronca. It must have a spectacular glide ratio.

      Yes, spectacularly good. When the crankshaft broke and the propeller detached (in 2015, there will be a video about in due course) it took some minutes to get down from 2500 feet and I had to spiral to loose the excess height. Watch the Jack Parham video for more Aeronca glider action.

    Those trees looked a little close for comfort on take off!

    • @FlyingForFunTrecanair
      @FlyingForFunTrecanair  Рік тому

      It looks close but there's no sense in pulling the nose up any higher than absolutely necessary; the speed will quickly decay leaving little margin for error. 'A miss is as good as a mile' is the best way, with a bit of excess speed rather than unnecessary clearance.

      Will probably do similar this year if the weather forecast is reasonable. Home via the Isle Of Wight for a couple of days exploring 🙂

    Great video although I've got a bit of catching up to do. Is it mandatory to have ADSB for entering controlled airspace in the UK or can you phone ahead for clearance without?

      I avoided controlled airspace completely on that trip and generally do; the only regulated airspace at all was at White Waltham and Compton Abbas on the way home. I believe ADSB requirements are different for the various classes of airspace.

    What engine is on the C3? How many horses?

    • @FlyingForFunTrecanair
      @FlyingForFunTrecanair  2 місяці тому

      It’s a two cylinder, 1860cc, Aeronca-designed flat twin, 36 horsepower at 2400 rpm.

  • @tennesseered586
    @tennesseered586 Рік тому

    What's the empty weight? It seems to perform adequately well although the first takeoff was a bit hair-raising. I heard the rpm increase toward the end of the TO roll. Carb heat left on? Looks like a lot of fun.

    • @FlyingForFunTrecanair
      @FlyingForFunTrecanair  Рік тому +1

      The carb heat is always on, there is no provision for cold air. Prop unloads as airspeed increases, thus increasing RPM, which is normal for any fixed pitch propeller. That take-off was on a hot day with no headwind and lots of kit on board. Magnetos are working perfectly too.
