Flying For Fun - Trecanair
United Kingdom
Приєднався 11 вер 2015
This channel is mostly about pre-war flying, motoring, railways, transport and whatnot. It regularly features my Aeronca C3 and Vauxhall 14/40 and other projects. Flying For Fun is a book written by Jack Parham in 1945. It recounts the amusing tale of flying an Aeronca C2, G-ABHE, before the war. The BBC made a short TV film of the book in 1986 featuring the Aeronca C3 I now own. I saw it back then and it started a lifelong admiration for the two cylinder Aeronca. I'm recreating Jack's Aeronca and have several other projects - aeroplane and motorcar - underway.
The channel is (hopefully) a miscellany of delight and features a variety of subjects that interest me, generally prior to the Second World War. Don't expect to find anything very useful or particularly serious, although I try to keep things factually accurate (except for when I need to make things up).
Trecanair is our family company, formerly based at Trecangate Farm. I've been flying since 1988.

"The Next 'Plane's Gone!" The Flying Life Of Will Hay
Will Hay was a comedy actor and probably most famous for the 1937 film "Oh, Mr Porter!". He was also a keen pilot and astronomer. I was recently given access to his logbook and various papers, this film is the result of that enjoyable afternoon in London.

The "pou" flea were dangerous. SEARCH: Flying Flea Followed my own advice: Wikipedia: Mignet Pou-du-Ciel Mignet Louse of the air After French phrase for Ford Model T Louse of the road. " When on approach to land, the pilot would push the stick forward to gain speed for the flare and landing. As speed built up, the rear wing, operating at a greater angle of attack would gain lift and pitch the aircraft's nose further downward. The pilot's normal reaction would be to pull back on the stick. This action would increase the angle of attack on the front wing by lowering the trailing edge of the wing. Because the trailing edge of the front wing was close to the leading edge of the rear wing, the front wing's downwash would accelerate the air over the rear wing and cause it to gain lift more quickly than the front wing, resulting in an ever-increasing nose pitch-down and flight directly into the ground. Mignet had not encountered this problem during his testing of his prototype, because he could not afford a large horsepower engine. When builders started putting larger engines on them and expanding the flight envelope, the wing interference problem surfaced. Following a fatal accident ... Changes to the airfoil section and wing spacing prevented aerodynamic interference and later Mignet Flea designs incorporated these changes. By 1939, there were many improved Flying Fleas in the air, but the aircraft never completely overcame its dangerous reputation. ..."
Thank you so much for posting this informative and entertaining ‘short’. My dad introduced me to Will Hay’s wonderful films when I was a child in the 60s and I grew up loving them and him. My sons are now both fans and love watching his films. I knew of his astronomy achievements and his unsuccessful attempt to become a Conservative MP, but you have shown me more about Will Hay the airman than I previously knew. Well done and thank you.
Thank you for introducing this man to me . I shall try to find any of his films .
Click on the film description, there are links to several Will Hay films on UA-cam.
I suppose a white spot on Saturn is less of an irritation than a red spot on Uranus?
@@loomisgruntfuttock Oh that’s very good! 🤣🤣
Excellent piece on someone I have admired as a great old school comedian, like so many of his generation a truly amazing character.
Thank you.
Alton to Basingstoke line, He was a good flyer and astronomer

Amazing, I had no idea. A true British adventurer
WILL HAY THE VERY FAMOUS BRITISH COMEDY MOVIE STAR??
The term ‘The Austrian corporal’ gave me a giggle! Another nice video, thanks 👍
Thanks for that information. Watched all his movies. Amazing life
Really impressed what an inspiration their is a house in Ramsgate with a blue plaque to him
What an absolutely fascinating story. Thanks for sharing
Another fabulous video, thankyou 👍
What a lovely, nifty auto. I liked the price which was about the same as the Chilton monoplane. Again thank you for sharing
Fabulous,very talented
Obviously a clever man!
I wish my dad was still alive to find out this! He loved Will Hay!
👌
I love "oh mr Porter" to this day...looks like he had a great life
How fascinating! As an actor and schoolmaster myself in a previous life, obsessed with aviation since I was a small boy, I am very familiar with Will Hay as the actor, but had never known about his great flying exploits or his other intetests and passions. I imagine he would have been a wonderful man to be friends with. Thank you for this lovely film. Great research and very nicely presented with so many wonderful photos and clips. 😊👍🏼
How very interesting, one of those ‘not a lot of people know that’ videos👍
Only 60 years old when he died. That's no age at all these days. He packed a lot into his life but dying at 60 is leaving early.
Lovely video thank you.
Loved all his films, still watch them when I need cheering up, something innocent and childlike about them. I only recently discovered his acievements in aviation and Astronomy. It's probably telling that when the war came, he was drafted into an educational role with the Royal Navy. His film work would have been a huge boost to morale and his talent as an astronomer would be useful teaching astro-navigation to cadets rather than risking him in a flying role. Altogether a remarkable man.
Love Will Hay! Now I love him even more! Thanks for the vid!
I wonder why he suddenly stopped flying?
@@davidwil58 There’s no clear reason although I suspect the closure of Stag Lane played a large part in his decision.
In the early days of automobiles, when new ideas abounded, Trojan seems to have filled their car with ingenious new ideas, none of which would go on to become commonplace.
@@madbrowndog4887 The epicyclic gearbox (the basis of automatic transmission) and a stiff monocoque style chassis with soft springs are both commonplace. Both pioneered on the Trojan.
I can't say I like his style of comedy but I found that very interesting. A man of many talents.
Barney Rubble wants his dynomometer back. Great job on getting her running.
Abiding memories of Oh Mr Porter, which I watched at my Prep School in about 1961 😅
I watched lots of Will Hay films for research purposes, was most entertaining🤣🤣
Congratulations 🎉
Thank you for posting this. My late father worked at the Gainsborough studios building sets and mentioned these films to me as a small boy. My mother enjoyed Will Hay. I did not know what a adventura and skilful man he was.
Nice one 👍 thank you 😊
What an interesting man, I must read more about him. Excellent video.
Well done Nick and thanks for getting in touch, this was excellent.
Thank you, had no idea of Mr Hayes's aeronatical achievements.
What a man, no sensational headlines other than flying, making people laugh and scientific discovery, he wouldn't get a second look nowadays(I say that as a compliment) 😊
One of my favourite actors - great daft fun
I had forgotten about Will Hay. It's interesting that he was so much more than an actor. The backstory is more interesting than I could have imagined.
i've lived 10 mins away from his sw16 house for most of my life and never knew it was there....
Enlightening.
As always fabulous. Here living below zero, for months ! simply waiting to my yearly prillgrimage to the Pietenpol reunion at Brodhead WI each summer. To see and hear the model A running and flying in various Piets , It is truly magical . Well done a fine achievement.
Teaching the Blackman to play the white man isnt mentioned i see!
@Jools-j2l many things are not mentioned, the film is primarily about Hay's flying.
