Ignoring the root cause of edema could lead to bigger health problems down the road. Find out more about the different causes of edema.

    0:00 Edema
    0:58 Potential causes of edema
    2:11 Diabetes and edema
3:00 Don't ignore the root cause
When someone has edema, you can tell a lot about what's going on in their body based on where they're holding fluid.
If the right ankle and foot are more swollen, the problem could be with the liver. If the left ankle or foot is more swollen, the problem may be with the heart. If both ankles and feet are swollen, the problem may be more of a blood sugar situation, like diabetes.
But there are many other potential causes of edema, including:
    • Chronic venous insufficiency
    • Lymphedema
    • Kidney problems
    • Advanced lung problems
The most common causes of edema in the ankles is diabetes or prediabetes, or the person is low in potassium and has high sodium. In this situation, I don't think you should cut down on your salt. I do think you should increase your potassium by consuming more greens.
In many cases, when people go to the doctor with edema, they're given a diuretic. But, this is just treating the symptom and not the root cause. When you hide the symptom, you're lowering the awareness that the problem is still there.
It's crucial to investigate and figure out the root cause and correct it, so you don't end up with a bigger problem.

I want to cry because I’m 48 yrs old and been dealing with swelling of my left foot since I was in my 30 ‘s and now both feet swell . It took watching this video to understand why or get some information to help myself try doing something about it. NO DOCTOR HAS EVER TOLD ME ANYTHING JUST GAVE ME DIURETIC AND MY BLOOD PRESSURE MEDS.I will definitely change my way of eating and eat more greens . Thank you Dr for the info wish you lived close by

I agree with you! I have had a right swollen ankle for over 10 years and no doctor could ever give me any reason it might be swollen and not the left. I did find one source on UA-cam that randomly mentioned it in another information filled video, but Dr. Berg definitely gets detailed with his explanations.

My right ankle and foot swells up most days, so wearing a right shoe is painful. I hadn’t been told about potassium, or about eating more greens. I was told to keep my foot raised above my heart as often as possible which often made no difference. I do eat salads using a variety of greens including pea shoots, raw broccoli etc. My ankle and foot slimmed down every few days, now I know why! Thank you so much Doctor Berg. 😍

Every day I juice one avocado with 2-3 celery stalks with xylitol & unsweetened almond milk. I noticed positive changes in a matter of days and now several months on I have greatly reduced the swelling and the discomfort in my feet/ankles. Im not fully healed yet but I'm improving every day. I decided after halfway through the first Covid year, I was at 208 lbs! and had some elevated blood pressure, to go on intermittent fasting (well started with a water fast, 5 days) and low carb, it worked, actuallly the first time, I have tried excersise, all kinds of diets, etc. been over 150 since my 2nd and last child, had really difficult fibroids, was anemic, had to have hysterectomy, which helped that...but had not been able to lose for years, now I have lost 29 lbs! and still working on it, just not as extreme on the low carb as I was, but still at least staying at 177-180 and trying to get down more, need to go more on the veg and low carb. but still, it has really helped a lot...I feel much better most of the time, still have some edema in ankles though, which I have had a long time, have had sprained ankles, and was told I have anterior tibial tendonitis from having a very high arch...so there is that.

Exactly, Took my mother to the Physician Assistant at the VA and she gave us diuretics and sent us home. Both legs and feet were swollen. I left my Mom with the caregivers and the swelling would come and go. I returned to live with her for 6 months, changed diet and started walking with her every single day. Her legs are back to normal and I'm afraid to leave her again. Diabetes runs in our family I'll have that checked next, thanks to you!

I was hit with serious heart issues in my late 30s, and after being on CCBs for awhile I developed edema… in my right ankle. I was then put on diuretics, which helped for about two days. But they had me on them for quite awhile. Long story short… I’m no longer a participant in the ridiculous corporate health system now. I learned this about my edema myself while researching about a year ago… that it was being caused by my liver. I wish I would’ve known a lot sooner! Thank you for the confirmation.

Thanks Dr Berg - Think you've earned your PhD many times over Doc - much of what you've mentioned has helped me enormously on the path to better health that most GPs in my area don't even seem to care, much less 'understand' about, and as you say, they seem to prefer treating the symptom rather than the cause. I know I have a long way to go yet to iron things out, but I feel so much better than I've done the past decade. Thanks :) Do you know anyone in South Wales who can help further?

Super helpful GBU.I would like to know more about veinous ulcer since my mother is suffering from it.The ulcer is as big ,like 3inch diameter sitting on another sore patch like 6inches X 6inch.Then the wound is weeping. We are at a loss as what to do.My mom is 72, still walks with the compression bandage my brother changes 3 days once. She is not a diabetic and it's only on her right leg.Is there a way for this ulcer to heal. She rarely eats meat, takes rice, oats ,no animal fats, no msg, less of everything.I been giving her ACV, and keto diet she won't do.exercise with the pain she's in is impossible.will burdock root work and will wheatgrass supplements help.Thank You.
