This song is actually the longest running #1 hit of the 80's. I was 10 when this came out, and I remember our music teacher wouldn't let us play Physical on "bring your own records to play" day. That teacher brought more attention to it than necessary. lol
@dustinjones8887 we are about the same age. Similar scenario except our teacher played it without comment and i don't think we kids had any idea it was something we "shouldn't" be hearing lol
@@todddepue681 - Right!! Just let it play. "Lets get physical"......it's not like the Kiss song "Lets put the X in sex". lol. At 10 ys old, I literally thought this song was about exercise, until the teacher made us think.
This is the first song I remember LOVING as a kid. I was like 8 when it came out and I remember singing it one day and my much older cousin was like you don’t even know what that song is about! I remember yelling back yes I do it’s about exercise!! 😂😂😂😂
This was about the time Jane Fonda and Richard Simons started doing their exercise tapes. It was just a fun video and the play on fitness craze. We got the song but the video was just a riot.
I remember listening to a countdown of the top songs of the decade. I was old enough to sing along, but young enough to have no idea what the song was about when it first came out. I was surprised that it was the #1 song of the decade, but was informed by others that I just didn't remember how huge it was when it came out. MJ's Thriller was #2, to put some additional perspective on it.
This is the song that was #1 when i first became away of songs topping the chart. for a couple months i thought this song was like the be all and end all of music itself
The fitness craze, I was part of it jogging and bodybuilding, at 13 turning 14 at this time this song coupled with Olivia sure would "inspire" me. Thank y'all very much, it takes me back to memory lane. Thank you for reacting to this video.
The song was originally pitched to Rod Stewart who turned it down. Then it was offered to Tina Turner who suggested they give it to Olivia. ONJ knew it was going to be a hit but then panicked due to the song’s suggestive lyrics and called her manager to pull the song from release. He told her it was too late that it had already gone to radio so she suggested doing the video to kind of off-set the sexual tone of the lyrics. Ironically, the video ended up being even MORE suggestive and the song became the biggest hit of her career.
This song spent 1o weeks at number 1 on the charts. It was also the biggest hit of her career. You will also have give Olivia a chance to tell you, I HONESTLY LOVE YOU. It is breathy, sweet, and one of her best songs. MAGIC is also pretty good, too. Keep going
Hopelessly Devoted To You was also in Grease ("Sandy" stepped outside at the sleepover for her little musical number, pining over "Danny"). Great song.
"Physical" was banned in a few states/radio stations here in the US. It was considered provocative back then. However, Olivia began to change her image in 1979, with the hit song "A Little More Love". That's the next one you should do of hers...
I remember when this came out. My Dad enjoyed it 😅 I loved Grease so I do enjoy Olivia. Hopelessly devoted to you Yes please. Sheena Easton Morning Train is a must. Great reaction and Peace out ☮️ ✌️ 🙏
Physical was the best selling song of the 80's, 10 weeks at number one, Olivia became a legend after that song You need to check many of her other songs including "Twist of fate"
Yeah, I think your point about viewing things now and how shocking it can be even to you with what is currently considered acceptable, plays into the perspective back then when Olivia Newton John first released this song and video. Looking back something like this seems pretty quaint now, but compared to her image just a few years before, it did seem like an almost night and day change and helped contribute to the "controversy" around it.
Her “image” was well behind then, because the steamy album “Totally Hot” should have done that in spades which came out in ‘78, well before this. She seemed to continue the sexy Sandy image from Grease on that. Maybe because this song and MTV gave it more presence than Totally Hot album.
I'm old enough to remember this song on the radio and don't remember seeing the video until much later. I'm still legit surprised that they included the part with the dudes walking out hand in hand in '81. The gayest thing on TV back then was Charles Nelson Reilly on Match Game.
Great reaction. Such a reminder of the TV show "20 minute workout". I'm sure anyone from the 80's remembers that. Hopelessly Devoted To You, was from GREASE too (You mentioned the show and the song separately)
The end of this video always cracks me up. She was done asking if you've ever been mellow, and wanted to add some spice to her music. It was a bit scandalous at the time but we fans couldn't care less. Xanadu.
Great Reaction Sam & Phil! As a big fan of Olivia Newton-John who actually was a Country Bumpkin whose first song was If Not For You in 1971 and I believe song that Sam was talking about was considered Country and one of my favorite Collaborations was with John Denver Fly Away! Then went through a Disco-like phase with Xanadu then she got Physical! Although I never could get into Grease! But I liked Grease 2! Go Figure! She was able to do a little bit of everything! 🙏🏻
Interesting Easter Egg...the model seen at the 8 minute mark was Jon Erik Hexum,,,He went on to headline his own action Tv show, called Cover Up, which was a ratings winner straight out of the gate. Unfortunately, he accidently deleted himself while horsing around on set with a prop gun that was unknowingly loaded. It was big headlines at the time. Regarding ONJ, I always felt that her 80s stuff, like Physical, Make A Move On Me & Heart Attack, was the best in her catalogue. She reteamed with John Travolta for the 1983 movie, Two of a Kind, which included in its' soundtrack not only another duet with John [Take A Chance[ but also 2 tracks that, to this day, are still my favorites, Twist Of Fate & Living In Dangerous Times,,, we miss you Olivia!!
This song debuted on the Billboard hot 100 on October 3, 1981 and it peaked at number #1 for 10 weeks and was on the charts for 26 weeks and this was her biggest hit out of her 41 hits this was her 29th single.
@@plutofreak Yes, it lasted 10 weeks at #1. but once it fell off, it went down fast. Furthermore, "Betty Davis Eyes" #2 longest song at #1 is remembered more than this song when recalling 'Top 80s Songs". Lastly, most Gen-Xers or 80's music fans don't put this song on their Top 10 (or even 20) Iconic Songs of the 80's" list. "Waiting for a Girl Like You" by Foreigner also spent 10 weeks at #2 and is remembered more than this song. These are also facts!
@silverlobo2135 Those are your opinion buddy boy. Physical went to #1 in over a dozen countries and has been used in more than 30 TV series or movies since in 17 countries. All actual facts. If you just don't like the song just say so. It's OK everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. (Poor as it may be)
Yes, The movie Grease changed her image. She was known as a country pop MOR artist before the movie but afterwards she changed her image to more edger pop style. Check out " A Little More Love".
One of the more "controversial" points of this video is the overt gay aspect to it, which was not common in videos of the time. The fact that all the hot guys walked out of the gym together, leaving her with a flabbier man, was quite titillating for the 80s.
I think the issue here was the suggestion that going the gym, whether for body-building or maintaining athleticism was...gay...which is funny for a song that helped build-up the gym culture, which is all encompassing.
Lol!that finale!Seems the "flabby" guy won by chance and had the last laugh. And Livy's facial expression was kinda "hmmm...why not? We'll have a lot of interesting things to talk about, won't we?"I just love the humourous breath in this clip.
I posted in my own comment that "gay=funny" was seen fairly often at this time. Portraying gayness may have been "not common," I'll agree, but whenever it was portrayed, it was typically for laughs-very demeaning to the gay community. I cite the instance of "Three's Company," but you don't have to look hard to find many other examples. Yes, the video ends with that gay "controversy" but it is "safely" ensconced behind a veneer of humor.
It's hard to describe how BIG this song was at the time. It was the #1 song for 10 weeks-TWO AND A HALF MONTHS! Can you imagine anything in today's world being the top song, album, movie-anything-for an even ONE single month? You are correct that the song captured the physical fitness craze that was just reaching its peak at the time. Richard Simmons became a household name. Jane Fonda's aerobics videotape was a huge, top seller. As for the controversy surrounding the song, I think a lot of it came from the normally "sweet, innocent" ONJ singing about carnal desires. The video playfully suggests it's simply about getting in shape, which certainly fit the tenor of the times. But listen to the lyrics alone, it's not at all about being fit. Lastly, I'll say the video doesn't age well when all the fit men are portrayed in the end as being gay. As Seinfeld would say, "not that there's anything wrong with that..." but this is another instance where "gay" equals "ha-ha, funny!" which is very demeaning to the LGBTQ community. This sort of homosexual-as-a-giggle was very common at the time. (See, for instance, the entire run of the TV show "Three's Company.")
Although it is not my favorite song of hers it was the number one song for the whole '80s decade. Also the physical video released was the first ever album video release.
My first child was born in December 1981, and in her baby book I wrote down the top song of the year. I knew it was Physical, but I didn't like that song so I picked my own personal fave: Bette Davis Eyes, by Kim Carnes. I would like to see your reaction to that one also.
After the movie Grease Olivia wanted to change her music style more into Pop music instead of only singing country-pop songs like she did in the 70's before the movie Grease, so after she became Sandy 2 with the leather outfit she said in a interview it was the perfect way to change her music style also and you can see that on her 1978 studio album "Totally Hot", because her later albums from 1976 up to1977 wasn't really a big succes so if she wanted to save her career then she needed to changer her musicstyle too and i don;t think Olivia would have survived if the would make another country-pop album in the 80's, so she took the risk but it turns out great for Olivia.
This was the biggest hit of the 80's spending 10 weeks at no.1 in the US. The album of the same name is amazing. Olivia was a bit worried about how the sexual content f the song would be taken and suggested they give the video a funny element. As it happened the video editing made the lyrics even more suggestive but was a huge hit. And yes was played in gyms etc a lot.
This trifle of a pop song caused an outrage among the morally uptight in 1981. We wouldn't see another hissy fit of this magnitude until the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show...
I loved this aong and video. My mom on the other hand was very disappointed in ONJ for doing such a controversial thing. I laughed. She was used to a more wholesome type of artist.
This is the early 80's when fitness centers were just becoming mainstream. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a recently retired bodybuilder and an up and coming actor and , Sylvester Stallone was shooting "Rocky 3", and "First Blood/Rambo 1". Olivia was switching up her style from the "girl next door" songs from the "Grease" soundtrack. More or less like Miley Cyrus did when she was no longer the rated G "Hannah Montana. "
This and _'Magic'_ are my two favorite ONJ songs. As I recall, this is also cover. The original being sung by a guy with the lyrics making it clear that he is more than ready to take the lady to bed once the dinner date is over.

Yes, it was controversial because of what it suggested and because ONJ was viewed (prior to this song) to be more wholesome, proper, and sweet, much like her 'Sandy" character. This song was more like her 'badass, rebel' look at the end of "Grease". In some ways, this song helped launched the fitness lifestyle and industry (that you folks are a part of) as well as the workout wear. Her outfit is actually not too much different than some she wore in "Xanadu". Arnold began acting in the mid 70's with the "Hercules" movies. Yes, this song and the "rocky" theme song were often played in gyms in the late 70's and early 80's. It popularity started waning around '85-'86.

The biggest selling single of the 1980s.

Believe she got the song of the year! It wasn't aloud air play in Utah.
This is from an Olivia Newton-John ABC TV special probably in 1982
The album after that has Totally Hot ! Great tune
Totally Hot came before this album.
A year after this Jane Fonda put out her first workout video and rode the aerobics craze to a mountain of cash (way more than she ever made in films).
This song was #1 in the US for 10 weeks in late 1981 / 1982, and the video's gay undertones were a bit shocking back then.
5th grade dance memories, haha. Good times, good times.
1981 was LET’S GET PHYSICAL
LAURA BRANIGAN "" Gloria (Official Music Video) "" // "" Self Control (Official Music Video) "" and "" Imagination "" 1983 featured in a Movie Called -Flashdance from 1983 also I'm Recommending the Original Artist that Wrote " Self Control " that was later Covered by Laura Branigan and became a very popular Hit 📻 "" RAF - Self Control (The Original 12"/STEREO "" this song is slightly different because it also contains a Middle section w/ some Groovy HIP-HOP 80s since you guys like Hip-Hop you'll really dig this classic from 1984 that has really cool guitar riffs too + really great vocals. 🎸 🎹
Guitar solo here was by Steve Lukather of TOTO.
I wonder if this is the song where the saying, "9 out of 10 women prefer a man with washboard abs. Unfortunately for them, so do 9 out of 10 men with washboard abs" came from. 😂
forgot how fun vis vid was, at v time was suprising to c olivia lookn so hot, lovely person, sad life n last half, rip angel
There was Jamie Lee Curtis she did that report for RollingStones of the fitness area !!
Not her best stuff but millions love this.. I don't get it but hey ok.. The best thing about this song is Steve Lukather on guitar (Toto)
yeah, have to do Hopelessly Devoted to You. I love you, I honestly love you, I little More Love, If you love me, Have you Ever Been Mellow, and Please Mr Please. That should get you started lol
We're just going to ignore the homoerotic nature of gym culture alluded to in the final shots?
OK.
Alluded? Blatant (and ahead of its time).
Oliva? Or Olivia?.... Sorry, I had to.
You guys are great!!
It was only controversial to the oldies of the time .. we took it for what it was …just a fun video
The 80s were so cheesy but so good ... As teens M t v was our addiction after school.
RIP Olivia:'( :'(
