I've heard that dogs can smell emotions from several places but never got an explanation of how. How are emotions measured quantitatively so we know dogs can smell them? Do we produce chemicals/pheromones for emotions that release into the air that we could measure with a device? Can other humans detect them?
How are you Vox journalists so great? Vox knows how to hire them and then when they leave, they become even better as they are able to focus on whatever they want. Howtown, Big If True (Cleo), Johnny Harris, Search Party, etc. all excellent. All great story telling and informative.
This is what top tier content looks like. Not only everything is explained in a very clear way with top notch graphics and animations, but also the overall pace and side by side comparisons go the extra mile to drive the points home. Fabulous start! 👌
Fantastic video. Shout out to the shot at :45... that's some serious motion control(?) / After Effects mastery. There are likely many hours behind those few seconds, and your viewers deeply appreciate it.
I can confirm that my thought-to-be-blind 18 year old Cairn terrier (RIP July 30, 2022) could always find her way thru our home despite obstacles particularly navigating her way to the treat cabinet.
i watched one video and i was hooked. i watched another and now i CANT STOP GROING CRAZY OVER THIS. LOVE THIS!! Definitely gonna be in my top few channels. Kudos.
I remember learning about this in university, but that explanation didn’t even come close to this summary. I wish I had this back in my university days. Probably would have got that question right on the exam. Future generations will have THIS to view to help them understand a very interesting topic. I really look forward to future videos of whatever topics you decide to explore and explain how we actually know something. Great channel idea.
My mind is absolutely blown. I now connect this with Mark Robers vid about dogs smell and it's paiting even better picture of how insanely advanced their senses are. I love examples of dogs vision here but like you say we can not possibly imagine how it really looks for a doggo. That imige at 7:38 gave me actuall chills ;) Thanks for this guys.
very much appreciate that despite not knowing the german guys name off the cuff, you still made sure to include it in the video. I know others would just gloss over it.
For anyone who would like to learn more about the “Unwelt”, I highly recommend the book “A immence world” by the British-American author, science journalist and Pulitzer winner, Ed Yong. Every page of this book is a mind blowing
This for sure is great content. Answering questions which answers we take for granted in every day life is something I am looking forward too. Keep it up!
(edited) i knew Adam seemed so familiar to me, I just had to watch the intro video to answer my own question. Skunk bear was one of my favorite UA-cam channels years ago. I'm excited to see how this channel does
i opened the channel to check what other videos you guys have, and to my surprise... can't believe this is only the second video there and already with this quality. already subscribed and cant wait to see more like this! congrats!
I am so, so excited for this channel. I've been a huge fan of Joss's work for years, and though I'm just meeting Adam I can tell he's got that same incredible curiosity and communication ability. Fantastic first video, can't wait to see what's next.
The way I'm wrapping my head around it, is I imagine that dogs see different smells as different tinges of color, and "sniffing" ups that saturation to make it easier to distinguish. And they can visually remember these smells the way we visually remember what an apple looks like
Somewhere out there, someone watched until "I think that says 45," before realizing they're in fact color blind as they keep staring at the dots willing 45 to show up anywhere.
Someone once told me that dogs smelling things during a walk is like humans appreciating a sunset. Now I understand how that’s an ample comparison. I tend to think of a dog’s awareness from its sense of smell is similar to a human’s peripheral vision: we know generally where something is without seeing it.
I just graduated with a BS in Neuroscience & Cognitive science, and while i knew all of the information, this video genuinely helped me connect all the details I’ve learned over the past few years
Very impressed by how far into things you went in such a short time. Given the time constraints I didn't think you would get past just the Dichromatic vision. It did brush over some of the consequences of each element, but that is a tradeoff which allowed more diverse information in the time constraint. You include a lot of personal connections, like using people's actual dogs in the discussion and talking about what they think of things. Not my cup of tea, but for most viewers that likely helps them to feel connected. By explaining it to another person it gives the sense of it being explained in a more personal way to the viewer. Well coordinated and put together. Not that you need my uneducated opinion to know that. Lol
Heyo! Tom Scott sent me, like so many others right about now, and I’m glad he did. This was really great - learned a bunch about our favorite good boys and girls. Will definitely check out the rest of your videos now. Cheers! Edit, 30 seconds later: Well, that didn’t take long. 😅
That was a lovely video, and the analogy of parallel world experiences at the end was certainly smile-inducing! Really excited for what’s to come next!
The analogy that dogs process smells similarly to how we process sight makes sense after seeing what they can do. I have a german shorthair pointer and I have seen her creep on ground squirrels in grass that she can't yet see and based off smell and whatever processing she is able to do regarding wind strength etc estimate their location and pounce on them and kill them. Or sometimes they bite her back and get away 😂
So a few things this raises for me, just random thoughts: 1, do dogs have variations of smell receptors like we have variations of cones? 2, dogs are known to have heightened medical awareness to help alert their owners of their condition, but this seemed to me, in part, due to elevated hearing. 3, smells for us often imprint the strongest in our memories. 4, smell is related to taste for humans. 5, these lessons may mean the taste, or at least using the tongue, may have similar interactions in lizard/snake brains as the sense of smell has in dog brains? Snakes use their tongues to "see" and "smell."
I had a confident blind dog and I always found her interesting to observe. We probably assume dogs are working on vision processed info much more then they are, simply because we are. I could place a raw egg a few meters away from her and she would quickly smell it and track it down. When out for a walk she was unaware of aproaching dogs if the wind was blowing the wrong way but if the wind was blowing the sent towards us she would sometimes know they were coming before I could see them. Her hearing also seemed more important* than sight in many ways as she would react to sounds very quickly and they would trigger emotions. If she heard something like a cat she would get excited and run towards it without care for any obstacles that might be in her way. Luckily she was a bull terrier with a very hard head and she only wanted to play with the cats even if that resulted in her getting scratched. *Important but sight obviously plays a specificly important role for dogs. If they smell or hear something they would then use their sight to confirm and hone in on it. If you feel like watching some cute dog videos search for Blind Dog Possum and look for thumnails with a bull terrier. There are about 7 or 8 ultra short videos.
🐾 With the person-dog relationship being so interesting, I’d love to see more videos on “ANYTHING DOG” done in your unique style. Thor could star🌟. He’s a natural talent and too adorable! Your presentations feel more like an informative conversation with a friend than a documentary. I’m anxious to see more from you!
Great first episode! One thing that I don’t know how scientists knew were the depth perception and colour blindness of babies. It should be as simple as because the brain is still developing but it’s still amazing how scientists knew nonetheless.
Great start! This is going to be a great channel! I’m assuming ADAM and JOSS will be working on their own videos (though probably coordinating with each other and helping each other) as we didn’t see Joss in this video other than the cameo at the end? The Vox journalist are the best story tellers and they seem to get better when not constrained by an employer and are able to do what they want.
What other questions do you have about realities your pets experience?
I've heard that dogs can smell emotions from several places but never got an explanation of how. How are emotions measured quantitatively so we know dogs can smell them? Agree! You made me subscribe.
The visualization at 9:56 of dogs experiencing the world through colourful lines representing olfactory stimuli really brought it all together for me!

i love that the representation for the smells that the dog is processing is also done through color, because that's the only way we can process it
YES! Engaging storytelling and teaching, beautiful (and helpful!) graphics, gorgeous filming, tight editing, authentic and valuable interview footage, perfect pet cameos! Love it all! Can't wait for me. Thanks, Howtown team!
