I live in Norway and there's a bunch of legless lizards in the area near my house. They're called "stålorm" meaning "steel worm" or "steel snake" which I guess doesn't help since alot of people already mistake them for snakes. They're beautiful though and they shine like steel.
In Sweden we call them "kopparorm" because they look like the metal copper 😅 interesting how both countries named it after different metals!
@@feliciatingsborg1924 They are also called Kopparödla (copper lizard), wich is the proper common name.
In Dutch we call them hazelworm. Sadly they are quite rare here.

These are called slow worms in English. They're neat.
I will never get bored of the mural they did such a good job. Love all the hidden critters, Ally and Cheyne are so cool.
There’s suppose to be a hidden chameleon in there too. They talked about it in another video and it’s one you have to find in person

About 4 years ago I discovered this channel while developing a medical issue that made mobility difficult. Now today I have gotten what will hopefully be the final surgery to correct the issue. Thank you to you and Ed and your staff for all the wonderful content that has helped me get through difficult times. I'm looking forward to being able to move freely and still keep Snake Discovery in my life.
I know I'm not snake discovery but I want to say a few things to you.
You are such an amazing person!
Even though I have never met you, I know you are!
Everyone who looks at you or are even around you should be blessed to even be in your presence!

I feel this. I got hit with genetic diseases I didn't know I had and I lost a lot of mobility, and so good entertainment is a MUST, and they helped me feel knowledgeable enough to get my boas, and I love them to death

Legolass is such a good girl! She’s so calm even when Emily flips her around and handles her tail. She’s very trusting and used to being handled. Love legless lizards!
That dwarf retic is so pretty. The pattern on her is just beautiful! I would say maybe naming her Belle. I know it’s not a very well thought out name, but her pattern reminds me of the animated version of Belle’s yellow ball gown.
and since she's being used in education, having a princess name might work well.

If you don't already have an animal named "LaBarabra", I think that would be a fun name for the super dwarf. She's Hermes Conrad's wife in Futurama. I believe you guys are fans of the show! :)

I phrased it that way because Hermes is more of the "main cast" than she was... or at least he appeared more frequently... and maybe some people would be like "there's no LaBarbara in Futurama" without the context reminder. LaBarbara is definitely far more than just Hermes' wife and I totally agree that she is one sassy lady!
My mind immediately went to Lahabrea, who's a bad guy in Final Fantasy XIV. When you fight him (well, technically the younger version of him that was corrupted by his wife and he split off his soul), he can turn into a snake.
Starting to set up a tank for my very first snake. Getting it ready before a reptile expo in March. Never thought about a pet reptile, but after watching this channel for a number of months, I desperately want a little noodle of my own. Thanks, Snake Discovery!
I recommend you to name the dwarf retic "ALICE"🍄🐍Coz Alice (in wonderland) can be big or small by eating a mushroom. This retic has a potential to be big snake but since she has a dwarf morph, she is much smaller than normal retics. So I think "ALICE" fits as her name.
I love the fluid movement of a snake, it has always fascinated me.

Random fact of the day: Australian legless lizards (Pygopodidae) are actually close relatives of... geckos!

Legless lizards are sometimes called "glass snakes", because of their ability to break their tail from their body. They also move differently, with so much more tail. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I can tell almost immediately a legless lizard from a snake just from locomotion alone.

The new little reticulated python is so bright yellow and sweet. Mellow Yellow or Limoncello would be cute names for her!
If you haven't named it yet, you should name your dwarf retic a word for big like how you named your green anaconda Tiny. Maybe Giga? She's so cute, and so is Legolas, good to get an update on her.

A fun fact is there's actually a species of legless lizard native to the UK called the slow worm and is one of the few reptiles to call the UK home.
As someone who knows only basic information about reptiles (almost everything I know I learned from this channel), my first thought when I saw a legless lizard was "what's wrong with that snake". 😄 There are so many things about it that I found jarringly different from a snake, mainly with it's head, that I can't imagine what it was like for people that originally discovered them.
I really don't get how to confuse them, their faces look so different! Maybe thats some Cilantro gene thing as well.

Name ideas for the python!!
"Goldberry" because she was in the video with Legoloss (apologies if I misspelled her name), I went with another Lord of the Rings name. Goldberry is the partner of Tom Bombadil in the books. She is said to have golden hair and is often described as having a link to nature.
"Sherbet Lemon" A nod to Harry Potter. It's Dumbledore's favorite candy and even a password for his office at one point, I believe in the Chamber of Secrets even.
"Butterbeer" Again Harry Potter.
"Princess Buttercup" As a reference to The Princess Bride. I know Emily often quotes Inigo Montoya in some baby snake videos so I thought it was cute.
I like butter beer and gold berry very suiting

Aurelie and Cressida both mean golden. I've seen a site that says Laurelin is a name that Tolkien created meaning "song of gold". All of the differences in facts were cool to learn and Emily always does an amazing job of explaining it clearly and well for both grownups and little ones.

I just realized you are one of the few educational channels I watch even when its about critters I don't have/ikely won't ever. I still get so excited when I see a new video pop up.
I see we’ve come around to this topic again. It’s an interesting confusion because, to me, the distinction is obvious just by the look of the animal. Still wonderful informative video as always.
It is quite difficult to mix them up, yes. But there are lots kids watching this channel so it's probably more geared towards people who are hearing about a legless lizard for the first time. And then there's some more in-depth info for more curious folks
This confusion is really common though. In Norway these are very common, but almost no one seems to know that they aren't snakes. I think there's a huge difference, but most people are afraid of snakes and don't dare to look closely enough.
Emily, you were BORN to do education and outreach! You are such a natural. I wish I had school trips to facilities like yours when I was a kid. Just watching this video makes me feel like a kid again, and I'm 57!
You should name the super dwarf reticulated python Sunflower sunny for short because of how bright yellow she looks on camera

With not having snakes in NZ and not sure about legless lizards, these (all these) videos are so gr8, entertaining and educational, keep them coming. I also love, enjoy any videos that show the snow, where u are, as it's so different to NZ; At the moment the top of the North, is VERY wet, and the South Island, is loved and hot 20-30°C+

This is one of the best channels to get educational information from, I love Snake Discovery and will stand by them. However that being said Legless Lizards still confuse the heck outta me, more so after this video.
Here's an interesting thing: I've always had a horrible terrible knee-jerk intense fear response to snakes. It's something I've been working on for a very long time. But even as a kid, I've never been afraid of legless lizards! Somehow my brain is able to classify them as not-snakes before I can even get a good look at them.

The irony of Emily explaining the "lateral line" like a suitcase is, if you watch the "Pomona Reptile Show" video, they indeed use the "little zipper stretch" thing on their suitcase to bring back all the extra stuff they ended picking up in California...
I like how she just picks up their body parts, and when she’s done explaining, she just yeets it aside
You should do a video where you tell use how to recognize one that's in the wild without picking it up
Just look at the overall proportions, head shape, coloration and scale pattern. Legless lizards look nothing like snakes
Both of these animals are so beautiful and amazing… In the past, I never put much time into learning about legless lizards… but they’re so distinctive and interesting in their own way! Amazing how two species that seem visually similar at a glance… can be so radically different.

So excited yesterday- I caught a San Diego legless lizard out walking my dog in the hills yesterday. I haven't seen one in 20 years! All the growth and drought, they have become an extremely find, it doesn't help that they are a burrowing species either. This one was just enjoying the sunshine and relatively warm day for a few moments before going back in his burrow!
Honestly the first legless lizard video absolutely made me fall in love with them. Don't have any reptiles myself but if I had to choose one I would 100% get a legless lizard. They can share my dog's food 😆😆

My cat keeps bringing in Slow Worms (a legless lizard species in the UK) and they are so fascinating! We have a whole community of them living under the compost heap. I love my little lizards

In Western Latvia we have them in the pine sands on the Baltic sea coast. We call them Stikla Čūskas, Or Glass Snakes. Beautiful!
