- My guest this week is Chris Turner - one of the best metal drummers in the world, both with Oceans Ate Alaska and with his solo stuff. We talked about OAA’s new song and line up, why he’s so good…that sort of thing. Check him out on IG @chrisoaa and youtube @ChrisTurnerDrums - he’s got lesson packs, merch, and solo stuff on spotify. He's an absolute freak.

One of the best and funniest podcasts you ever done Craig.
Just heard the new OAA song and it’s absolute 🔥🔥🔥🔥
the new vocals are killer.
its got his signature kick flamadiddle badassery and the new vocals ARE killer@@Boxerharvey1
2 legends chatting drums and shit, like they have known each other forever, bloody brilliant, loved it and well done Simon on your first day at drum school, big love to you all ❤
One of the goats of modern metal and music in general. Chris "The Octopus" Turner. ✌️
Absolutely love the honesty and transparency in the beginning about not wanting to be on the podcast from Chris and you guys hashing it out in front of us
This makes me so happy
big same.
The forehead veins are insane in this video great googly moogly. Great episode!
holy shit I cannot unsee the forehead veins now 😂😂
Not a drummer just here because I love both of these guys
Travis Orbin would be a great guest, man his hella ripped and can play literally anything leading with any limb
I would love to see Travis on this!
As someone who personally knows Chris and has been friends with him for years…I can confirm that everything that James has come out with is pure nonsense. Chris is genuinely one of the most humble and open-minded guys I know. He’s such a caring & fun dude and I can assure all of you that he has nothing against anyone, race, sex or other! Chris is a top dude through and through! 😎
This ep was really nice, because it wasn't the usual format of Craig, asking questions, guest responds, Craig Annecdote, Move on. It was organised Chaos, interjections from simon with back up on points, also Simon being the best producer and reminding them where they were if they lost their point in the conversations. Also, my favourite parts were where Chris asked Craig questions, because it's nice to see Craig relax and answer questions about himself rather than worrying about it being all about good high quality content. It was like being sat in a pub and listening to two new mates shoot the shit. Good work!
Absolutely.
Chris had major seeking Dad's approval vibes thru this whole episode esp the more beers he drank 😂
loved the increasing use of "innit?" .
After watching this I think James is taking the piss implying Chris is misogynistic. He's super chill and how he was straight about why he first didn't come on the podcast was super down to earth and transparent.
Craig is truly in his UA-cam era and I’m absolutely here for it 😤😤😤
The zoom in on the burps is killing me 😭😭😂
Hi! “Pleasant American Man” here (1:10:10), thank you both for the in depth response!
I put 95% of my energy into drumming and virtually none of it on mixing or engineering (I also pay friends to help with that) but I’ve always wondered if this was holding me back. I have goals of being a serious session drummer / content creator, and I always assumed that people like Chris knew how to do it all themselves.
So, it’s great to hear that even legendary drummers don’t know this stuff by default, and also that engineering is the more important of the two for a drummer to master so they can at least record themselves and send it to a professional mixer.
Much love to you both (and you too Simon!!) - the downbeat community fucking rules ❤
Man I cant wait for chris to come back. Fucking legend.
I've had the aformentioned Craig Displate as my phone wallpaper for months 🤣🤣
well im sorry that is STEALING and i will be calling the AUTHORITIES
@@deadsoulxiii get .jpeged
Fuck me, this was the best bromance-podcast ever! Could not stop watching it and could not stop smiling/laughing either. Genuinely happy for both of you that the hard work over the years paid off. Shout out to "Simon the Sidekick" for doing a banger job at using search engines and making edits that are buttery smooth and that one cut that genuinely had me questioning if there even was one at all(when Craig listens to the new OAA track).
Ya'll a junch of fucking legends!! Thanks for great entertainment😘
When I first started following you, it was for stray and drum videos. I went through the backlog of podcasts and listened to interviews with people/bands I liked.
After the kublai khan episode, I just listen to all of them.
Absolutely top notch. I don’t listen to a lot of these bands, but these podcasts are always amazing.
The Kublai Khan episode was my entry into full episodes of the pod too, right before their run of shows in Aus. I cackled. Have been here ever since.
Burp Champion, thanks for the kind words Chris ❤
never clicked on a link so fast. fantastic pod craig, ur smashing it!!
Loved the episode. It's great that Simon is there to help support so you can properly focus and engage your guests going forward.
Simons thumbs up is comedy genius 👍 😂
👍
“I also don’t know how the game fucking works” 🤣🤣🤣
Had the chance to have a 1 on 1 with Chris a few years back, he helped me start to get a grasp on music theory which helped me tremendously in terms of writing and explaining sections of tracks to band mates and clients I’m working with. Happy this this chat happened 👏🏻
17:49 is absolutely gold!
This is one of the most enjoyable drumming convos I’ve ever heard hands down
When I started listening to this podcast, I wasn't expecting that each episode would make me laugh out loud multiple times. Take your fucking quid, Craig.
This is one of the best ones yet. Loved it guys. Loved hearing the different methodologies you used to learn and practise
That was the best chat I’ve ever sat and listened to. You guys are awesome ❤️
i was listening to some older podcasts whilst at the gym recently, the upgrades you've made are fucking insane - fucking great work
2 legends. Glad this pod finally happened!!!
Loved this chat! Huge fan of Chris and OAA
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Both you guys are fantastic and I'm super appreciative of all the hard work you put into your jobs/crafts. Thanks for letting us all come along for the ride.
Chris has written drum notation for an Oceans song by hand one time, and I bought it from him. The song is Blood Brothers. Such a cool piece to own.
Yes!! Glad you got Chris on - now I gotta go listen to the new Oceans Ate Alaska track
Been waiting for this one! 👀
loved ittt the episodes that have me laughing every 30 seconds always end up being my favourites and this was definitely one lmao we’re so back 😂 also congrats on your debut simon! 🎉
Why do I get teary at the end with all the compliments
Think this might be the best episode. Been a day 1 listener and I’m learning so much just from re listening to episodes and old episodes. Recording the debut EP with the band this year and can’t wait to use all the tips from my favourite metal boys ❤ Chris is such a great guy have gained so much respect for you both for being so open and humble big love
Absolutely incredible episode. And there's so much more you guys need to talk about, right at the end of this one you started getting into a whole other episode of topics. We need Chris Turner, on The Downbeat Podcast, 2.
Also I bounce between the video and audio only versions as i go about my day, and when one of those burps hit I genuinely thought spotify had randomly started to play some hardcore breakdown or something, just a super loud "BLLEEERRRGH" out of nowhere. Man needs to do some guest vocals.
Craig, these interviews just keep on getting better, mate. I've been along for the journey for a while and the progression is crystal clear. But you've still retained what makes you "you".
The shitting chat had me absolutely rolling. Unreal episode!
I was straight-up cackling! 😆
Omy fuggg so much knowledge! You 2 are legends!
Amazing video , loved it , I have met Craig Reynolds at the drum show in Manchester after his play ( thanks for the pic and chat) I missed Chris Turner , maybe one day I will catch him somewhere in UK 😊 btw I could watch another one of these so please let's have another episode of you two in the future 😊
great episode! really enjoyed it
This was fire! Chris is a beast 🔥👌🏻
I'm so happy Chris is doing his own thing. He easily outpaces most bands with his own producing / writing that would have him as their drummer.
Loooved this episode! You have great chemistry 🩷💣
Also.. his burps are insane
Absolutely adore Chris's playing. Fantastic episode.
Wasn't expecting to see an @Driftworks jumper on the Downbeat! The crossover no one saw coming 😁
You a fan of cars and drift too? Music and cars, the quickest way to be broke 😂
I'm only going through the comments to see who else is spying the Driftworks merch
Legends! Epic episode, two hours spent right, fuck yeah
Two of the greatest drummers alive!
Damn this was such a real chat between two friends, loved this episode!
Rad interview! It would super awesome to have Shannon lucas on the show. Such a great dude and phenomenal drummer.
Brilliant episode .
Love Chris!
He’s wearing a Driftworks hoodie! Love it!
Great episode!
You two are adorable!
This was fucking great! I think all the misunderstandings and miscommunications played into an epic comeback story. Great guy. Great chat. Loved it! This might be my new favorite!
Just dropping a comment to say this episode was sick. Banter was great and I loved it! ❤
great episode..cheers from Egypt
Another banger!
I remember like 4 years ago or something like that I recommended on stream that Craig interview Chris and he responded with something like "I can't interview every drummer from every shitty metalcore band, don't care if they're from England". And now here we are. Love Chris, love the pod!
Definitely when I thought he was fake
My favourite episode
This podcast rips 🔥🔥
Chris is the goat. How dare you left Chris unread!
Headphones are a must in a podcast where two people talk in silence =))
It’s literally mastered to 0.01
1:29:23 it’s sounds like a demon is tryna blurt something out for him🤣
being at the beginning of the conversation where Chris mentions he thought Craig didn't like him then clicking on this timestamp is so funny
Chris is incredible.
With that said, one of his idols (Thomas Lang) can do things with his feet that Chris can’t… yet.
Loved this episode, genuinely hilarious! 100% my guy Joel is a handsome dude 🔥 love that man! Great vocalist! Great tattooer!
the zoom in on the burps sent me every time LOL
It is he brought me it when he did the pod
He has a hunched back from carrying the weight of Oceans Ate Alaska for so many years
Simons thumb 🤣
I hope that's all we ever see 👍😂
@@rocioiribe5841 WHAT THE HECK i mean im no looker but sheesh 😢
@@deadsoulxiii my joke was just cuz the thumbs up was funny, no shame intended here 😔
@@rocioiribe5841 👍
Haven’t listened to OAA in forever but Chris seems like an awesome guy. Gonna check out his solo stuff and the new OAA
Probably the worst time to get into OAA
@@Marius_ae It’s always a good time to get into OAA
Worth it, regardless of the drama the new song is dope
Hope we get an edit of all the burps!
finally finally finally
fav termina drummer
Chris rockin the Driftworks merch... He's such a car guy lol
Love how the thumbnail looks like you guys were trying to throw grapes into each other's mouth lol Gonna watch this tomorrow after work
i had a partial tear of my pulley in my finger and my god i couldnt hold a controller or remote for like 2 weeks and you could forget opening doors, took me a year to get back to a 60 sec dead hang off a bar
🔥
🖤
This is the fucking best
Dude is real and really good. Shoutout to The Octopus Chris Turner lol. 🤘
The burp-zoom was magic.
I fucking loved this. Cheers
awesome episode! also is taht a mario drawn on drumhead(octopus)?
Also horns up for Simon \m/.
Thanks!
thank you!
I thought the old mics you were using before sounded great. Love my SM7b though.
I got a confession to make: when I first saw Chris play, because, specially the face, and the whole way he plays, I though he had some disability and was even more impressed, but then I saw he was actually normal and I felt really bad of my thoughts
lmao
that burp is so ridiculously put on.
couldn't tell if those were really burps or he was giving us a teaser for his new project as a vocalist
Soooooooooo stoked for this episode!
If Chris Turner is god.......does that make Craig the Virgin Mary?!?!
Just f*ckin with ya, Fellas!
This episode is legend.....and I haven't even started it yet!
🤘😝🤘
What music distributor did you work for? Just interested as I used to work for Southern Record Distributors (SRD) once upon a time.
the first 10:45 is the best media i've ever watched
1:02:30 why does he burp like he’s dying LMAO😭
Little dig towards Dave Elitch there on the topic of positioning/posture etc? 😉
That would be an awesome guest to have on to discuss stuff like that further! And to hear how many famous drummers he’s been teaching. His work from bands like The Mars Volta to Weezer, etc.
Sleep Token please sample Chris' burps
