Oscar's right hand was the greatest piano player ever. His left hand was the second greatest.
3rd best left Monk, Powell
Yes sir!
Forgot about Art Tatum's left and right hand!
@@RockSpoon123 Tatum was the originator, no doubt. Peterson's biggest inspiration.
Adam Johnson Yeah men!Powell is some other animal...My favorite
This guy is so good the piano practices scales after he gets done playing.
These guys all had monster classical chops. Bill Evans went through conservatoire. The reclusive pianist Dwike Mitchell allegedly would "warm up" by picking a Chopin Etude and then picking a key to play it in. He could play them in all 12 keys! I believe I read that in Zinsser's book "Mitchell and Ruff."
After it smokes a cigarette
@@pauldeck4500 That would be 24 keys.
Rick Beato got me here! I thank him for helping me revisit this giant of the keys!
Thought that was sweat he was wiping away, but if you zoom in, he's just oozing talent.
One has to remember that studio / stage lights in those days were extremely hot… pre LED lighting technology! Those musicians were cooking under those lights with all those coats while attempting to make it look right!
I saw Oscar live at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor sometime in the early 1980s. Solo piano. What an evening.
I was fortunate to have heard Oscar live on two occasions in New Orleans and to interview him extensively before the latter concert on Tuesday, May 3, 1983. He was a very sweet, soft-spoken man with some of the biggest, roughest-looking hands I ever saw. We stayed in touch for several years after that, and I once sent him a box of fine linen handkerchiefs for his birthday (I like to think he put them to good use while playing piano).
Outstanding, Luther! That's a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
wow cool story, Mr. Peterson had a cottage just minutes away from my folks tiny secluded hideaway, i found this out far too late , as i cant imagine the vibe that would have been created listening to him among the trees and water of Northern Ontario. Im sure he is probably sitting on his deck now just resting and taking it in. RIP Mr. Peterson
heard him once
WOOOOOW!!!! Que privilegio!!!
Wow! Glad to hear you had the privilege to meet and listen to him but also to get to know him a bit! Fantastic, good for you! I’m sure he put those handkerchiefs to good use!
When did Oscar not go next level genius that is the million dollar question
nylonsteel on plenty of albums which are borderline lounge, which is a shame, but great pianist either way
My mother RIP saw Oscar in 1939 at her local church when he was just a teenager. She remembered it for the rest of her life.
To my ears he was there or thereabouts most of the time. Check out Salle Pleyel with Joe Pass
Oscar Peterson, Toots Thielemans, Bill Evans, Michael Brecker are people who everything they did were on their maximum. I never heard Oscar Peterson playing something mediocre. He plays the best, or he doesn´t play.
nylonsteel it was definitely not his fault or anything like that but on his latest performances after the stroke you could tell that he was not the same. At least we can happily say that he went peacefully, unlike most other jazz players
in my humble opinion, overall, the best jazz player ever (which is a bold thing to say, I know). He had it all: dexterity, taste, soulfulness, sophistication and uniqueness.
Nail on the head. Well said.
You’ve described many jazz pianists, but I know what you mean. For me it’s Thelonious Monk.
@@littlelamb2112 Not so many. In the old days dexterity and sophistication maybe was a little scarce. In present times uniqueness is totally non-existent.
I love Monk, I think he is a higher artist than Oscar but his technique is a little rough.
@@sergioropo3019 When you play the way he did, I stop caring about his technique 😅
Sorry guys but I have to disagree. I seldom look at artists one is greatest. At a certain point there are 5 or so individuals that play so well they are all great in their own way, and it becomes a matter of subjectivity. I am a piano player and listen to Art Tatum and just sit back and go...my God, how is it possible? Tiger Rag, which I cannot play well enough to perform shows Tatum's left hand off to the point you believe there must be 2 piano players at work. I love Oscar and play his stuff, but Art was from a different planet.
Just the greatest. Saw him at Dallas Brooks Hall Melbourne Australia maybe 1974?? You could never be disappointed. The absolutely stunning musicality and dexterity, orchestration, block chords. For My friends albums fantastic. Pinnacle of jazz.
Every time I think my piano playing is getting pretty good, I just watch this and I am humbled like a fighter who just got their ass whooped.
Every time lol same
Fellas, don’t compare! It ain’t your fault. You’re probably tremendous players. What Peterson does is beyond talented play, but you both know this.
I know...
When the instrument becomes a playground for the spirit.
Oscar said in an interview that his speed and dexterity came from years of classical training. My parents are huge fans, so I grew up listening to Oscar's music. The eleventh anniversary of O.P.'s death just passed on December 23, 2018. Old age and a stroke did not take away his extraordinary talent. Rest in peace, Oscar. How we miss you.
One of the many greats I had many chances to hear live-- but didn't!
People like him are just naturally gifted, but i'm sure he benefited from his classical training nonetheless.
robert adinolfi he passed on December 23, 2007
Damn O.P is op
Art Tatum 🤟🏽🤟🏽🔥🔥
What I’ve always loved about OP’s playing is that he’s always humble and has a big heart filled with pure joy. He’s never cocky, always down to earth although he sure can play fast like a machine at times. He always plays straight from his heart and it can be clearly heard. 😊
sometimes i wonder does OP stand for Oscar Peterson or Over Powered 😅😅 cause either way it works
Oh, yes! Thats pure truth!
I love how he gently whipes the sweat out of his face while playing insane lines with the other hand :D
Great Human Being
demadddis96 Cory Henry does v similar things 😂
Playing the piano comes so naturally to him at this point he could finish a meal while playing a song with pauses.
Amen to that. I saw him do just about that very thing with 1 hand. Only 1 of him.
I remember hearing Ray Charles talk about Art Tatum...he said Art could be drinking a beer with his left hand, playing piano with his right & you wouldn’t know both hands weren’t playing.
@@gospeltruthtv Until the sound of a splash gives the game away.
My favourite pianists: Horowitz and Peterson. The talent and execution is just so extraordinary.
God really outdid himself when he gifted Oscar Peterson!! Nothing short of genius, few like OP come along in a lifetime!!
Do your scales folks
Javier Nino-Sears This is the only comment that matters on this entire video! Do your god-damned scales!!
And remember, even Oscar practiced 4-6 hours a day, until he cut back to 2 the last years of his life.
scales dont make it musical........this guy overplays
Billy James scales are the foundation of all music
@@TheBlueCream Blasphemy!
It was a great honor in my life to have met Mr. Peterson as a 17-year-old youth at Steves Music in Toronto in the early 80s. He was actually looking to buy an 88-keys, Fender Rodes, electric piano.
Thanks for this great sampling of this icon and master musician.
Oh my gosh ! Genius Mr. Peterson ! Wow !!! What is the awesome swing feeling !!! Just breathtaking performance ! He is the greatest jazz pianist of all times !!!
The notes come out crystal clear.
The best jazz pianist for this.
Incredible technique, I didn't hear one note out of place in all of his progressions, his wall of scales were flawless 🎹🎼
And he's singing with what he's playing. That's just extra flex.
Nathan Basurto Right. It’s the ultimate flex. He’s singing the melody and improvising it simultaneously.
I was lucky enough to hear Oscar Peterson at Ricks Cafe Americain back in the early 80's in Chicago. Sat about 10' from him and NHOP. It was one of my best concerts I ever heard and I heard it with my dad.
He was in Chicago in 1961 at the London and recorded a live set there. It was and is masterful. But truthfully, beyond that.
Piano Player: Blinding Lick across 4 octaves with different scales ascending and descending. Cameraman: Let's look in this guy's nose.
@@whykatera81 youre delusional
Harchit Bhatoia lol I was high on mushrooms when I types that. Hence the typos. I think I was trying to say. Black musicians videos are always messed up from that time period. I’ve never seen one bad beetles or WHO video
I think they were mesmerized with just how lost Oscar was inside the music and the intensity of his performance. So the focus wasn’t his nose... but rather the sweat that was dripping from his nose as his playing reached orgasmic heights
xs10tl1 😂 Lolololol
😆😆😆
Inevitably one of the best pianists to ever exist.
Errol Garner
You mean undoubtedly
And, without question.
not "one of" the. THE.
Undoubtedly, too.
Wow. Bowing down. This is one of the top examples of total mastery I’ve ever seen.
Pure sweet Genius!! And not only Mr. Peterson but all the band members are truly exceptional. Thanks for the compilation!
This is one addicting video. Back again and again I come to it!
Singing with the notes. The brain power it takes to transfer that to his fingers in time for the...nevermind. my head hurts now.
Exactly - creating all this amazing stuff in real time takes a lot of processing between the ears. Oscar is not of this earth! Another who I think could be the next OP would be Hiromi. She is extraordinary also.
waymond guthery ha ha ha ha ha lol 😄
*IKR!* I was like ... Dear God, he's scatting along with his improvising!
ahhahahaahahahahahahahahah
The ultimate aim for the jazz musician - immediate thought transference.....and Oscar was way out in front at that. Just so inspiring to watch the sheer joy on his face at being able to achieve that.
Any pianist has a leg up on the rest of us lowly humans. And this cat had coupla legs up on all the rest of the pianists....absolute visionary, and proof of Heaven. Thx for it all OP...we all owe ya!
Greatest pianists of all time: Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff and of course PETERSON
Oui, et quelques autres....
I feel like Mozart and Peterson share it. No1 else.
You never heard of Tatum, Art Tatum.
The greatest pianist of all time period
Brilliant!! I Remember when he had his own show on the BBC back in the day UK. Can't remember the last time i saw jazz on any TV channel. Sad days
WeZ yup, I think it just goes over the heads of the average listener because pop music has been dumbed down to basic harmony and a beat with a catchy lyric. People don’t have the attention span anymore
@@Jackrabbit710 100% mate. Anyone can create music now & it shows. It's all tech driven, with little or no skill or soul.
19 dislikes? how? this is beautiful music. This is a master at work. You don't even have to like jazz to appreciate the talent of this man. Genius.
Steve Poole They like Kenny G.
It has been impossible to understand the "Thumbs Down" on ANY OP tune for so many years!
No Steve, they simply turned their computer upside down to be able to give another like.
What I do don't understand is bad.

Real Legend in Piano and Jazz music.. 👌👏Thanks for sharing.. 🙏😘
Could spontaneous invention possibly go any further? There’s a very scarce race of pure genius who walk this Earth. Here’s one.
@erock755 Wow, now that was profound. I mean really, I'm not being sarcastic.
Yep
@@tr7938 Yep-a better word would be "spontaneous-ish"!
A velocidade do pensamento de Oscar PETERSON é incrível, quais espíritos mandam nestes dedos ???
Thanks for the message Oscar you sent me . It will live with me for ever 😊 R.I.P and long live your memory and great humour
Spontaneous creativity with soul, speed, dexterity, and taste. Oscar Peterson was just superhuman.
He is a band within himself. I could listen to just him all day
Why am i crying listening to this genius
Because you know it’s not reproducible.
My dad was a piano tuner for Steinway. From 1947 til 1990. I was blessed to have inherited his taste in music. Oscar Peterson was on the top of the list. Jazz is definitely a way of life. Thanx for your post.
What great pleasure you have brought to the world Oscar Peterson... and, let me mention Ray Brown.. and the other fab musicians with you- I am so proud to state that I was born in Montreal your city too... May your soul rest in peace. I fell in love with you at the age of 18 years old... I am also a musician.
My favorite is the climax of tricotism. Hard to believe its not the at the top.
Not only do I love Oscar's fabulous music, I love the different "looks" he had throughout the years. What a lovely man! . .SYLVIA! -FL 8/30/20
Damn! Oscar is so grooving :) 100% party all the time!
Total beast mode
I saw Oscar and the quartet open at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in LA for Ella Fitzgerald. They were supposed to do a 30 minute or so gig.... They played for almost an hour with Ella in the wings laughing and urging them on and then she came out and did her whole program. T'was a magical a night as I've ever heard. The "quartet" that night was Oscar, Joe Pas, Louie Belson U Ray Brown.... Magic, magic, magic.....
I can't imagine a better night.
I can't tell you how jealous I am of your experience! You are so lucky. When I was 7 or 8 I got teased by my friends because Ella Fitzgerald was my favourite singer. Oscar, Ella and Brubeck were a staple in my house growing up. For which I will be eternally grateful. My grandfather's casket was carried from the chapel to an Oscar Peterson solo. I guess it must run in our blood.
@@duck7237 Hi, Duck,
Yes, as I said in my original post, it was a truly magical evening. I think the thing that also contributed was the look on Ella's face as she watched from the wings. It was nothing but pure enjoyment of and appreciation for all of the musicians in the quartet that evening and the great music they were making! She even started her set "late!"
If you haven't found it on U-Tube, Google Oscar Peterson & Andre Previn together. It is, I think, a three part interview of Oscar and, at the end, he and Andre played together on side by side grand pianos. It brought back memories for me of when Andre was on the jazz circuit and a couple of his jazz 33 1/2 LPs that I had at that time of his solo work.
All the best & stay safe,
Dave
@@davidlong5898 thank you so much for your response. Your description of the night just makes me smile! I will absolutely check out the video that you recommended. I hope that you and your family are getting through this pandemic in one piece. All the best!
Oscar AND Joe Pass! OMG
I would propose that Oscar went to next level genius every time that he played. These are representations. Thank you for sharing.
Unbelievable. The swing. Completely fresh idea after fresh idea. Absolute genius. Thanks so much for posting!!!
Is he humming his solo? That’s how you know a jazz musician is truly playing what he wants
CrispyBoi03 what if he was just playing familiar lines 🤷🏽♀️
It’s that perfect ear that can hear it in their head and make it come out thru the fingers. Natural born talent. Beyond perfect pitch. ❤️
ive got serious goosebumps....man oh man...pure magic
Genus is certainly the best way to describe this man’s piano prowess. Oh my! This made my day.
He is indeed Genus!
One does not write comments about this genius. You just sit, listen and marvel at his G-d given talent...stunning
@Mr. B I don't doubt it for a moment, however there is something there that defies "just hard work".
Oscar Peterson was my Dad's favorite musician. He even got to see him in concert (I was not invited - I was just a kid). From my Dad I learned what great music is. Thanks Pop. This one's for you. I know you're jamming to O.P. in Heaven. I'll see you again in the bye and bye.
You might've been just a kid, but you should've been invited.
lol
Excuse me while I look for my heart pills. I've never heard a more capable, clean, better, piano player in my whole life. This man has the "goods" in my book. I only wish I'd have seen him live before he passed. Look how hard the band is working just to keep up with him. Marc.
OSCAR CAN ROLL HIS FINGERS ACROSS THE BLACK & WHITES FASTER THAN RAIN DROPS FALLING. HE STARTS OUT WITH THE JAZZ AND THEN CHANGES TO A MELLOW JAZZ AND SINGS ALONG WITH BOTH RHYTHMS. HE WAS SUCH A CLASSY MAN. I MISS HIM SO MUCH! SYLVIA! -FL 7/14/2020
The OP, Ed Thigpen and Ray Brown trio is the best trio ever.
i was so lucky to see them when i was a kid at the Showboat in D.C.
Jazz is more then music, it's a way of life...
How is it a way of life explain please I'm curious
@@elijahelijahelijahharms5936 It takes an incredible amount of time to be a musician, and even more to consider yourself a jazz one. Atleast imo l0l
Yea verily.
So like jazz, life is a mistake?
@@levsoklic4171 sure hit the wrong notes and instead say you were "improvising". There a lot of these guys around.
A Frighteningly technical monster playing some of the most inspiring jazzed up boogie I have ever treated my ears hear!!!!........ Not to mention how often he has to wipe the sweat with his handkerchief while hammering out a ripping solo and not miss a lick Superbad!
One interesting thing about Oscar Peterson was that he could analyse in depth the piano playing of other pianists.
That’s an important distinction.
And he was in absolute awe of Art Tatum and his otherworldly piano playing. Great back and forth between him and Count Basie talking about the unparalleled playing of Art Tatum.
Just when you think you’ve seen it all from Mr. Peterson, in he comes with more to give. He’s a gift to music.
It always baffles me how camera operators/tv directors decide to go away from shots of the hands or broad angles that capture the entire performance to static shots of the inside of the piano or long shots of a player's face. Could you imagine an NBA game where they just show shots of the rim waiting for the ball an usurping any of the athleticism in how it gets there? smh
@teatime90 herbie hancock disagrees
Unfortunately the production crew is most likely attempting to sell their product to a wide range of audience. They are also most likely attempting to be artistic in their own way as well. This is unfortunate to musicians as I would love to see his hands as well. Another commenter mentioned the camera man finding Oscar's nose more interesting than the smoke coming from the keyboard lol.
i quite like the shots of just his face. a shot of his hands the entire time would be boring.
Exactly 😅
Then clones your eyes and listen
Simply food for the ears . Keep feeding me . Thank you Oscar and God bless you .
ONLY 7 times? It seems to me his entire career was next level genius. :D
OMG.. 😲A real giant with dexterity and harmony phrases which are amazingly groovy and rarest of all times I guess.. 👌👏The one only genius undoubtedly.. 👍Thanks for sharing.. 🙏😘
Sans doute le meilleur trio dans le monde du jazz, merci messieurs.
One of the greatest Canadians who ever lived. Rest In Peace O. P.
Besides my father, he's my favorite!
Charles Bronson was a great Canadian in Death Hunt.
A true genius! I saw him & Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass at the Wolf Trap . Wow I dress with style out of respect for this once in a life Artist. Don't forget Nat King Cole (RIP) Pure music lives on .
When I was a teenager and heard this genius, that's who wanted to be, but I knew it would be impossible because there's only one of them! the greatest of all time; Oscar Emmanuel Peterson!!!!!!
The fluidity, the sheer inventiveness, the stupendous articulation, the tremendous overall architecture, brilliant swinging of 16th notes, mastery of runs up and down, the brilliance of unison 2 handed runs, fabulously executed turns, chromaticism, tritonic substitution in block chords, modal playing, extended syncopated riffs, Just BEAUTIFUL, thanks for making the world bearable OSCAR x
And thanks for the breakdown.
The music just flows out of Oscar, from his heart and head right into his hands.
I heard Oscar Peterson live in London in 1984. Of the truly great jazz pianists, I think Peterson was the best at accompanying within a powerful rhythm section. Technically outstanding and he had a long life, unlike Tatum, Garner, Evans and others. Always brilliant at uptempo blues. A music teacher, Mr Ken Morrell, who helped me with my basic beginner jazz efforts as a 12 year old and who was a fine pianist in his own right, told me how he had met Oscar Peterson and asked him about some of his chords and harmonies. But apparently Oscar Peterson had preferred to talk about photography!
My son tried some of his chording... he said he couldn't reach his thumb and pinky finger far enough, lol. We both were always amazed and entertained. Cheers!
My brain just fell out.
Ive just started playing the piano at 64 years of age and I have just played twinkle twinkle little star, I then mopped my brow with my handkerchief just to give me some idea what its like to be Oscar.
Master of simplicity and complexity at the same time
Yo, the white cat that plays bass w/him is for real! U gotta be to keep up with Peterson!! Big props to bass man!! #salute
Watching this at 3am in the morning made me get up and practice my scales 12 keys @80 BPM......lol....for an hour! Accuracy and diction. Truly inspiring performance, Oscar!
Many young people still don't know the great genius of Oscar Peterson, so they get illusions about some old mediocre pianists if that time that never had such value even at the time. Guys like Peterson, Bill Evans, Clare Fischer, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, and some others are true, incomparable genius. 🙏🙏👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks! Had never heard of Oscar Peterson.....Genius, Indeed!!!
Looks like he took the guys playing with him to the Outer Reaches of Musicianship. Pure Greatness.
Thank you for the upload.
The undisputed King of jazz piano! The Trio with Brown and Thigpen was just so tight. That rendition of Hymn to Freedom, my absolute favourite Jazz tune, in Denmark, was next level. I wish I’d been able to see a live show of his.
Though I love to dance and move around, sometimes this amazing music has me stunned. I sit in quiet submission, reverence, and only dare to make slight, subtle movements. I am afraid if I dance, that I might miss something sacred.
I've never seen anyone like this guy. WOW!
Awesome Oscar!!! You are the reason I studied the piano!!! Thank you so much!!!! My inspiration!!
Me, too. I took my first lesson in 1966. I was eight years old.
Geez, I Love Oscar. His playing carries me off into another world. A mindset that's so much more innocent than today ... & Soooo incredibly Brilliant.
You can faintly hear Oscar scatting in the background on track #1. Absolute cool.
God having fun using this gentleman artist. This goes beyond music. It truly is divine.
Well, I was going to listen to this for some inspiration before practicing...now I'm far too messed up in the head to practice after seeing this. Cheers!
Thank you very much for sharing.
Be it great keyboard technique where the bassists and drummers struggle to keep up, or a beautiful ballad, Oscar's genius is fully apparent. I am 72 years old and have been hearing Oscar since I was 13. Nice compilation.
Wow. I'm speechless. Genius from another planet. He slept with a piano. OMG. Love this. How could I miss this my whole life?
Who comes close?
What a genius, I was lucky to see him live. Absolute master.
Summer Samba deserves to be number 1 on this list.
Yes - amazing 16th note solo !
Everyone's giving their up most efforts. This is a masterpiece on every level. And Oscar is at the forefront.
Hiromi Uehara seems to be in the same groove....
Good lord, these boys are smokin, but what else is new, scatting as he rips apart the Bosendofer! Awesome clip
next to art tatum Oscar is technically the best to ever play. When I first saw that video of him playing C jam blues it changed my life.
Great stuff Indeed! Absolutely one of that All Time Greats! I listen to Oscar quite a bit. Can't get enough of his repertoire. Even though Art Tatum is considered THE best, and Oscar admitted to being intimidated by him, I still think Oscar is more musical than Art and I prefer Oscar's playing. Art gets going so fast, that the music begins to become abstract, and you can forget what song he is really playing. I find it a little tiresome at times. But not Oscar. He really knows when to come back to the beat and theme of the tune. And he can groove like no other!
Phineas Newborn Jr. is not far behind. Phineas impressed Oscar the first time he heard him play.
neuromantoo I'll have to check him out, thanks.
I've rewritten this comment so many times, trying to compress what should be an essay into a comment, but here goes. Tatum was and still is the undisputed king of keys, but for playing in a group I think I would have to choose Peterson. On a broader note, I'd like to acknowledge the importance of these musicians in the progress of not only the states, but also the world. Music was the only language in which the American Negro had both the availability and the means to express him or herself in the world. If you will submit to metaphor, Art Tatum and Jelly Roll Morton were the seeds, which gave fruit to Peterson and Armstrong, but it was King and Malcolm who harvested them. The modern civil rights movement building on the achievements of musicians as the indisputable evidence of their cause.
Art Tatum constantly makes mistakes and corrects his mistakes. I bought his transcriptions, but did not learn for this reason. Oscar, on the contrary, almost never made mistakes after the age of forty. But the main difference in my opinion is that Oscar constantly asks questions and answers them, either with a phrase or with harmony in his left hand. It's interesting to listen. Art's answers are virtuoso passages. Oscar also plays passages, but, if I may say so, with a more harmonious filling.
I Salute this great Pianist I loved his articulation
