My goodness!! I had ACDF spinal neck surgery in 2020. I've never heard this.....even from my SURGEON!!! 😮 THANK YOU! SO GOOD TO KNOW 👍💖 Texas Nana Psalm 91
Patients with cervical spinal fusions should be VERY careful on neck rotation, compression or neck extension!!! I had a stroke from this when downhill mountain biking with prolonged hyper extension post C3-C5 fusion. The colloquial medical term is “beauty parlor stroke”, as similar occurrences in older women extending necks rear wards over edge of a sink.
Wow! I have had 4 cervical fusions!! I thought from the physical therapy following each that it was good to move my neck around in different directions to keep from getting stiff!! Good to know this!
I think you've touched on something that applies to any cervical issues. Having a slight gap between C2 & C3 since brain tumor surgery 20 years ago, has taught me to be extremely careful in anything I do. Fusion was suggested but I was wary of having to be even more cautious so decided not to go that route. Sorry you've gone through issues with yours .
Me veterinarian’s 60s wife spent a day cleaning her ceilings, ceiling fans/lights, all over the house. She had a massive stroke that night-doctors attributed to that!
Interesting information. Years ago I was in a hair salon where a woman had a stroke while leaning her head back to get her hair washed. Scared me to death and made me worried about doing that myself. Good to find out what may have happened.
I had this happen to me, I am only 32. It happened after a recent fall down the steps though where I ended up with whiplash during the fall. I damaged my vertebral artery at the c2/c3 area. Had a arterial dissection (on the inside wall of the artery) that had then formed a hematoma that blocked 50% of the artery. I also trained my muscles which just kept spasming non stop. My neck was in so much pain, and all of this also then made my pre-existing migraines worse that I ended up having new migraine auras (that were different from what I had before) that were then causing blind spots. The first one I had lasted about 3 hours and was only affecting my right eye, and my regular family doc (who I went to when it happened) was worried I was having a stroke and so sent me out by ambulance to the er where they then found the artery damage when they did a CT scan. I got sent to another larger hospital then to have follow up MRI done and had to be seen by both the vascular and neuro teams there. Luckily did not need surgery, but was put on blood thinners and had to change up some of my other meds that I was already taking due to the artery issue (the meds put me at an increase risk of clotting and or were meds that would constrict my blood vessels) and was put on new migraine shots instead due to the migraines with auras getting so bad and so frequent.
I suffer from vertigo occasionally and this video intrigued me. I had stretched my neck in my martial art classes, but quit going much more than 180 degrees side to side chin down to the chest. I didn't feel much advantage going 360 degrees. looking over your shoulder side to side seems enough to me. Looking up while stretching can trigger my vertigo. The stroke info was new and something to think about. I can see the advantage of 360 degree stretch if you may take a strike to the chin while practicing. I have sub. to this channel and look forward to exploring your videos. I am always looking for safe stretches that benefit older people, 73 here! Thank You!
Valuable channel & a Godsend .❤😊 I'm younger. Was in a major vehicle accident. 2 months ago. So if you have nausea, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech it's best NOT to stretch the neck back. As it could be a circulation issue.
I get dizzy and nauseous when I tilt my head back. I’m old now, but this has been an issue for 40 yrs. I have asked neurologists about this over the years, but they had nothing to say. Just changing a light bulb at the ceiling or changing the batteries in the smoke detectors frightens me because I must work quickly or risk an accident.
"Hairdresser Syndrome" - pinching of basillary arteries, started happening to me looking up in the shower, I fell and broke my neck. Age 45 symptoms started because I have EDS. Needed Lag screw fixation of C1-C2 and brain decompression, stem cell cementing down to C3 where I had second compression fracture, found on DMX.
@KathyBGood It took a loooong time to recover from this surgery. Amazing how many neurologists i saw that misdiagnosed me. Even Mayo missed the neck breaks... a doctor in Spain found the breaks with a telehealth consult. Referred me immediately to a neurosurgeon in Tampa. DMX showed everything, as well as upright MRI.
This excellent video also applies to those with syringomyelia ( although that involves the spinal fluid circulation, instead of blood). A neurosurgeon suggested washing hair at home prior to seeing the hairdresser, to avoid hyper-extending the neck into the sink. A hairdresser said, she prefers the client gets on the chair on all fours, face forward into the sink & she'll wash the clients hair backwards.
Triggered a massive migraine just today when I went from the physio who did gentle adjustments to the hairdresser, with neck extended back at the wash basin. Sudden sharp pain with crunching sounds followed by pain with nausea, full on.
Terrible. I tell the hairdresser "wet it, don't wash it." I tried making a sling to hold my head up over the bloomin' basin but it didn't work well enough. I also have an ice cap that I like for migraines.... Amazon has Migrelief Migraine Relief Cap - Ice Cap for Migraines and Headaches
When Mike spun the towel, I was waiting for a comment about snapping it. Good info, guys! I have a long neck and was glad to see comments about trying different placements of the towel. I use 3 different spots and all 3 feel different, and good. Thanks for the info! The turning to the side method I haven't tried yet, but will.
When I was 12 I suffered a severe whiplash injury, that was 64 years ago. Ever since I have a clicking when turning my head in certain positions. Has gotten worse with age as expected so looking up is not so easy anymore.
this is from the pro beauty association Beauty parlor stroke syndrome can occur by having your head bent backward, or hyperextended, improperly for a long period of time during a shampoo at the salon.Oct 5, 2021
It's a tricky area. My neurologist told me she has treated several patients who had strokes caused by their chiropractor adjusting their spine and cutting off blood flow from the neck to the brain.
This explains why my doctor was adamant about finding a pillow for my head when he needed me to lie a certain way on an exam table. It caused my neck to be hyperextended. I said i didnt mind but he refused to continue until he got someone to fetch a pillow for me. I'll be using the towel sling every time i do major stargazing from now on. Thanks!
My husband (73) just found out about calcification in some vertebrae in his neck. Of course, he didn't know which ones. And of course, the doctor didn't mention the possibility of calcification of the carotid.
Never heard the stroke claim. As a singer, my teachers all recommended neck/head rotations to help you relax before performing. I have had whiplash a couple of times from car accidents, then years ago, my car was T-bones by a huge bus. Despite wearing my seatbelt, my head broke the windshield and caused me to have a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) . It’s been 15 years, but my neck still hurts when lying in bed.
What about if you’ve had fusions? After my cervical fusion, all of my neck pain and dizziness went away, it’s been approx 4 years now and I’m having migraines, stiffness and pain and a little bit of dizziness again. I’m very careful with doing stretches because of my fusions.
I'm elderly and I fly RC with a bunch of others for years, haven't seen any strokes and our heads are way tilted back especially when flying the turbine jets at higher altitudes and speed.
If you are a senior get into the habit of NOT looking up. You may think your neck is ok, but arthritic changes can happen slowly. I looked up and got CERVOGENIC DIZZINESS. It was Not fun. Luckily I found a maneuver on YT that cleared it up almost immediately. I had suffered DIZZINESS for an entire day!
@@nancycy9039 I tried to send you some links but they would not post. Basically its called an OCCIPITAL LIFT. Chiropractors do it but you can easily do it yourself. 1) put your neck in a neutral posture- not raised up or down. keep good posture 2) Keeping your shoulders in a normal position, RAISE ONLY your neck and head, as if you want your head to reach the ceiling--JUST A FEW MILIMETERS NEEDED. 3) Another technique is to look at a fixed point on the wall directly in front of you. Keep your eyes fixed, but slowly raise your head up a tiny amount, hold it a little, then lower your head back down to neutral. Hope I explained it well. It worked immediately, but you may have to do it several times a day. Best to you
I have shattered my c1c2 and fused from thetop of c1 bottom of c3. I experience dizzyness and serious spins and have lost consciousness while stretching my neck. .....
I'm going on 82 and have never heard such a preposterous comment. I take medication for an enlarged prostate that lowers my blood pressure and may cause some dizziness when I get up too quickly. I simply lean forward or sit down when I feel lightheaded and the dizziness goes away in a few seconds to a minute. Failing to look upward could result in my head accidentally crashing into something and worse injury. Perhaps you meant to say, could excessively bending ones neck to look up for more than X amount of time trigger a stroke in seniors? I probably would lie down to watch that fly crawling around on the ceiling, otherwise I would likely fall down from disorientation.
So I guess all those old people in WWII who were looking up to locate the incoming planes of an air raid all died of stroke? Hey, the enemy could have saved themselves a lot of money by not manufacturing bombs; just flow over the enemy and all the old people instantly die. I never heard, "Don't look up you can get a stroke," but have heard cautions to hold onto something if not already doing daily stretching.
Triggered a massive migraine just today when I went from the physio who did gentle adjustments to the hairdresser, with neck extended back at the wash basin. Sudden sharp pain with crunching sounds followed by pain with nausea, full on.

True. I worked in physical rehab and saw several young patients who had a stroke after a chiropractor adjusted the neck.

There's no good reason in the world to bend your head back like that. Why beg for trouble?
Is it true that you guys don't like the carnivore diet?
I hope not! Would be misinformed, if so.
