    So I made a couple mistakes 😂 The hub on the back of the case is an RGB hub and can't actually support fans.
    Also, I tried twisting the cooler to help dislodge the CPU, but the thermal paste was like glue and I couldn't. That poor CPU...

      reminds me the first time i had to use thermal paste. was interning with a little hole in the wall computer factory, selling grossly underspeced machines to unknowing college students. one day they wanted to test their toes in the server market. so we were building a couple servers, dual cpu xeon machines. the cpus each came with their own tube of goo and i had never used the stuff, nor did my supervisor. he figured if he had me do it he could blame the intern if everything went wrong. anyway we ordered four xeons to build 2 servers and each one came with its own tube. in retrospect one of those tubes would have been enough for all four cpus, but i unloaded a tube each. a month after i left that job, i heard those servers went tango uniform.

    Former Geek Squad manager here. Your build experience will vary a TON by store. Generally I would just tell my Agents that we didn't do full builds (it's not a service corporate officially has us offer.) When we did do it, I would review and test it myself before I okayed the pickup, since custom builds can lead to a lot of weird issues.
    A lot of stores will carry the parts for a full build, not sure why yours didn't.
    We also didn't have a SKU that actually covered the scope of work for a full build, and we use specific closing codes to allot our hours that gets compared to what's charged at the register.
    I probably would have charged you $150 in labor for the one time build and left it at that, but put you towards the bottom of the priority list due to time involved (and explained that to you beforehand).
    We often only had one actual Repair Agent onsite at a time, who would be juggling a dozen or so computers, so fitting in the time for a custom build with our limited hours was never easy.
    That's all mostly at corporate, but just some behind the scenes for you.

    Best Buy employee here. Apparently building computers is no longer a required service that Geek Squad offers, and it varies from store to store if they want to offer it. Their reasoning for that is that it cost too much to require everyone to get the proper training. My store doesn't offer it anymore, so I build computers on the side now. However, I found the old training guides and I learned that putting more storage that is actually requested is commonplace, in order to make it "future-proof".

They just come without support and documentation. I don't know anyone who doesn't get their keys that way. Generally european customer protection actually allows you to circumvent a lot of windows licensing shenanigans. I worked for Geek Squad for a year, and honestly the quality of work you're going to get is really dependent on the Agent working on it. Clearly they didn't really know what they were doing with the thermal paste. (and was actually surprised how well they did on the cable management) As far as pricing goes. Their whole strategy is to get a customer to spend 200$ on services, which would be the price of their subscription service. So all of their "a la carte" services are very over priced in my opinion. The subscription service is annual and includes all software related issues as well as hardware upgrades for as many times as you want to go in a year including virus protection(yes I know you can get other free services, but most people aren't aware of how). I think the services are helpful really for consumers who just don't have interest in doing this type of stuff on their own and don't necessarily know how. I can understand for anyone who watches Dawid (Awesome vids btw) that these services are viewed as "easy," but in reality most people don't really know what they're doing, especially ones going to Geek Squad for computer services.

    Geek Squad agent here. I can tell you the quality of most service may vary from location to location as most of our knowledge comes from us being enthusiasts. Most people who are working on your machine are definitely qualified to do so most of the time tho and typically have proven they are knowledgeable by this point.
    As far as the price is concerned, Best Buy really pushes their Total Tech Support plans to make things a decent price. The plan runs for $199 and would have covered the labor building the rig and installing the OS. How far we to into the OS setup may vary by the agent, but always consists of software and driver updates along with any listed software installs (typically office activations). The support plan also includes a year of software support, usually consisting of fixing bugged Win10 OSes. Also comes with a year of trend.
    I totally agree that the retail price of a Win10 licence key is insane in the store. That said, if you brought us a cheaper key from somewhere else, we would have no problem using it for you.
    Lastly, we're not allowed by our procedure to actually overclock your machine, even if we are totally capable of doing it.

    As someone who builds computers for customers, you do not send a new computer out the door overclocked unless the customer specified that is what they wanted. The last thing as a tech you want to deal with is having a machine come back. As far as charging for Windows install, a lot of shops do that separate from a build, but I just do it as part of the build because it takes 15 minutes to install Windblows 10 from a thumb drive and I sit back and let it happen while watching UA-cam. Cable management sucks when the PSU goes bad and as a tech I hate that part of the job. Looks nice, sucks when it breaks.

    I just put together an Intel i9 with an Asus Z490-A motherboard. I think the reason why they plug some of the fans directly onto the MOBO instead of the fan hub is that MSI and Asus often have fine-tuning and overclocking software that can control the case airflow. That software like Asus AI Suite sometimes doesn't work nicely with fan hubs. I plugged everything on to my Nexus fan hub by Fractal. Now Asus software 5-Way Optimization overlocking program is asking me to plug as many fans into the MOBO directly as possible. Maybe I am doing something wrong because the Fractal case manufacture told me the fan hub is an intelligent one that can work with the MOBO.

    From a retail aspect you're not going to overclock somebody's machine that's a personal preference. A lot of people don't want their stuff overclocked as it can break down the parts sooner than later

    This video was _intensely_ interesting to me. I work at a US Best Buy, a nice high end one, and this actually didn’t go quite as well as I’d have thought, for a couple reasons. First, as I imagine there would be one or two of at most of our stores, myself and one of my coworkers know this stuff very well, watch channels like this, Linus, Bitwit, etc. regularly, have built our computers, you know the drill. So we’d advise people well on what to get. And the Geek Squad in my particular store is _very_ good at what they do, in fact my whole store has a really strong team. Point is, the “odd choices” we see here wouldn’t really have happened in my store, and _especially_ that thermal paste abomination would _NEVER_ happen with us. But the interesting thing to me is the differences in protocol, because if you don’t know, Best Buy US and Best Buy Canada are almost two separate companies. For example, down here, we don’t actually have a “build a computer service”. If you bring us the parts, whether you buy them from us or not, we can assemble it, but we don’t choose the parts and everything ourselves. As for the services, a hardware installation of a single part is $40, but rather than charging $40 for every part for a ridiculous amount, we have a single all-encompassing service for $150 that would cover everything that needs to be done, including the windows installation. The product key would still be separate, as it would be if you were building your own, but that $150 will get you set from start to finish. So this was interesting to see how our siblings to the north handled this. Every time you, Linus, Kyle, etc. do one of these videos, I always wish you guys could come to my store and talk to me and have my geek squad do these things, because I know, confidently, that we would perform really well to expectations. Wish that could happen someday, but.... ah well. Thanks for this video!

    I remember when i worked there our scheme was to get people to sign up for the membership and cancel after 6 months so they'd get support + setup/service for ~$100 total instead of spending whatever crazy amount the repair/service was. It was a win-win for everyone as the new membership counted as a $270 sale to the store and the customer paid the least amount possible.

    I worked at a "mom and pop" PC repair store; located right next to a Best Buy. The Geek Squad techs used to come in for advice on how to fix things ( a lot) and even a couple times just paid us do it because they'd given up. They seemed nice, but not very experienced at all. One thing that kinda tied their hands was they had this "geek squad CD" with a bunch of tools and diagnostic, av etc., which actually contained some decent stuff. BUT they could ONLY use that. If those tools didn't/couldn't cut it; they weren't allowed to use any other software, whatsoever.

    I honestly wouldn't knock them for charging $100 for installing Windows, I charge that much myself. While it seems like a ripoff, it really isn't.
    There are of course the smooth sailing Windows installs where everything just works. And then there are the dumpster fires, where just about everything that can go wrong, does go wrong. I've had many Windows installs over the years go sideways because of driver problems, software issues and hardware issues (yes, even on brand new hardware.) You as the tech can easily end up going upside down in labor having to troubleshoot the nightmares that come with sideways Windows installs.
    It has become an increasing problem in recent years with Windows 10 and 11 having stupid incompatibility issues and them not QAing their updates anymore, certain hardware configurations can cause them to go nuts and require tons of time wasted troubleshooting ghosts in the machine.

    • @Tatertot01
      @Tatertot01 2 роки тому

      I understand your point of view but I still think it's a ripoff. I install Windows myself and I don't feel like that effort was worth $100. If a store charged me that much I'd feel like they were trying to scam me.

    • @GGigabiteM
      @GGigabiteM 2 роки тому

      @@Tatertot01 One day, you'll encounter that one nightmare Windows install where nothing goes right and you're sitting at the machine for 10 hours debugging it and trying to get it to work. Then you'll realize $100 is not a ripoff when it works out to $10 an hour.
      My hourly rate is between 25-45/hr depending on the service, so you can pick between a flat $100 rate or the equivalent hourly rate of $250-450.
      You feel it is a ripoff because you have never owned and run a business. Businesses don't run on hopes and dreams, they need to make money to stay solvent. You're also devaluing yourself, just because you think it's easy to do, doesn't make it so.
      The $100 price is a risk-reward balance, you calculate the average amount of time it takes to perform a service and put a number on it, which is both a benefit to you and your customer. You look a lot more professional when you have a set price, rather than "I don't know, just pay me xyz per hour until it's done." If you do the service under time, it's a bonus to you. If it takes far longer due to unforeseen issues, you eat that cost and the customer gets the benefit.
      There are situations where an hourly rate is appropriate, but an OS install for a home user is generally not one of them. Something that would qualify for that is a server or enterprise workstation with very specific requirements.
      But in any case, you're dealing with hardware that someone else built, and you can't make the assumption that the parts used are designed to work together, or are fault free, or were even put together correctly. I've seen some pretty horrific builds over the years that were complete disasters.
