I am doing this now. I saw green growth in the middle 8 hours after I put the end in water. The next day it's 1/4 inch. This is the closest thing I have seen to magic.
If you take a super thin, almost see through slice off the bottom to make a fresh cut it will happen even faster as that part gets dried out when harvested. When the roots start to get approximately 3/4" out the bottom I go plant it in soil and it makes a full head again and again.
I am doing romaine. It's been 2 days no noticeable activity but top part starting to brown...I think I will try your idea of cutting thin slice off bottom of the stalk. How many days will the process take overall? How many times can I regrow same stalk?
I’m just starting to see my lettuce grow. It’s amazing, as this is my first time trying to grow food. I also have peppers growing from store bought seeds. 😀
I'm currently growing lettuce too, day 7 and you're right it's fun to watch it grow daily. I'm doing it with celery too. Hope you are having a great day
Love this! The fact that I can do this on the kitchen counter is awesome, because I live in an apartment. Can't wait to try this! Thanks for this video!
This is such an easy way to grow lettuce, I was amazed at how it changed everyday. I just transferred mine to a pot of soil and can start setting it outside now. Looking forward to trying the other veggies as well, thanks for the idea!
Dang, all these things I throw away I could have simple regrow?! I feel cheated! Anyway, green garden here I come. Thanks girl for this amazing knowledge. :)
Lettuce is always more bitter at the white part. I has many a spit moment as a child. Younger leaves do tend to be sweeter. Also there are medicinal qualities to lettuce, especially wild varieties.
Me too! LOL My children will love this cool experiment! Your salad looks delicious! My MIL tried doing this, but we didn't know about the water and roots. Awesome!
I just did this! I tried two methods- cutting short and leaving some leaves to encourage photosynthesis so the plant doesnt die. The latter seems to be doing better, but my growth under grow lights is much slower than what you had. Green onions work well with this method too.
This is my first time enjoying your UA-cam channel. Great work! I’m looking forward to more great content from you. Thank you so much for this informative video! I got so much out of it.
Soooooo I've tried this and now i've got a stem with buds trying to bloom in the span of 10 days. I never thought i'd get a sentimental attachment to lettuce in my life, but here we are. Neighbor does gardening. If it blooms I'll probably offer seeds for spring time.
Yes, I have regrown some of my vegetables. I tried the romaine lettuce first, put out roots and I transplanted into a pot of soil. Rather than putting out a bunch of leaves, it grew more like a stalk with small leaves growing off the stalk. The stalk and leaves at one point toppled over so I staked it upright again. After about a month, I decided to harvest the leaves to make a very small salad. After that, the core planted in the soil seemed to go into shock, never regrew anything and eventually rotted away. I've got a few more romaine cores going, plus a lot of scallions, celery, beets and bok choy. I've got green leaf lettuce and arugula, started from seeds, growing in a small self-water planter with soil. In another self-watering planter, I'm growing spinach from seeds but it's going to take a few weeks for the spinach to get big enough to start harvesting. They're all in my windows since I live in an apartment and have no outdoor space.
Lettuce is an annual plant. It wants to throw up a seed stalk at the end of its life-cycle as a means of dispersing its seeds. The leaves on the stalk are not only small, they are bitter because they are full of latex. Next year, collect the seeds when the flowers dry out. You'll get hundreds of them from each stalk -- if you are alert.
Growing in window now more spring onion tops! I just snip off new tops and use them in my cooking. I change the water daily. I now want to try with romaine lettuce after seeing your video.
I've just did this week one done and also did a celery. Put them in bourbon glasses and they have took off. And I have enjoyed every day seeing it grow.
I feel like all the water changes would slow the growth process, I've been growing bonsai for 22 years and the most important thing with any cuttings is stability, movement will damage the little roots OK your not trying to grow a root and its not so much regrowth as just carrying on growth, Nature is just so magical and amazing. This is a fantastic way to teach kids how we never have to go hungry if we learn to grow stuff. Super cute video, I do this with all my kitchen veg scraps..
My sister recently bought some romaine hearts. Your video showed me to keep a little of the leaves instead of cutting down to the stump. Maybe one day I'll update this and tell of my progress!
Great video, I will definitely try this hope I don't mess up I have never plant anything in my life this will be my first experiment. Thanks for the video!👍👍
@@JennStavropoulos My now potted celery plants are looking very healthy. Thanks for asking. I was trying to find a way to upload pics of them on UA-cam but sadly could not.
I started doing this like a week ago...there are some shoots...so I was looking up if I needed to put it in soil and found you, subbed, and I'm glad to know I only need water. Thank you for that also good to know that it continues to grow...so I'm going to get another stalk of romaine so I can have two growing at the same time.
How long did it take before you saw roots? I've had mine in water (changing the water daily) for about two, three weeks and have seen no roots yet. Just wondering if this is normal.
what Vegetables can grow in xtreme heat and cold!???!?!! i have really old tiny apartment. heat waves all summer and freezing all winter lol Thank you. Lovely VIDEO!
I grow all of the green onions that we need on my balcony. All of them started out as the bottom inch of a green onion purchased at the store. One is now thirty inches high and contains more onion than two bunches purchased from the store -- and this is the third growth for this plant! It has already been harvested. I merely left the bottom two inches in place and the rest is only a few months later. HOWEVER, you did not tell us how to root the lettuce that you regrew!
@@scottadlerI tried with one, nothing happened. I’m about to try again with a new batch. Hopefully it will work. When I wrote to her about green onions, I hadn’t tried lettuce yet. Any my first attempt failed.
Your counters are beautiful! And I will definitely try this. Would it matter if I use bottled water instead? The tap water quality here in Texas isn't that great.
Just started with the lettuce. I always scrape the cutting board into a pot of dirt when I cut up a vegetable containing seeds. I now have numerous tomato plants and four avocado sprouts, and I also have an asparagus bed and my first ever fig sapling. I figure if I grow everything I can, something is bound to survive.😮
I am trying to grow my own veggies. I buy organics of the time, so I want to take any seeds and replant them. I am growing the lettuce like you have grown in this video ..starting to see the center come in green. So I will continue through this week and possible transition Fer to soil.
I'm currently doing this method with a store bought pineapple. I'm going to try it with lettuce. I've used a different method before with lettuce, had no luck.
