Every basic skill, technique, tip, trick, you name it, its all here. A 150+ page high resolution PDF guidebook is also included to help reinforce and guide you along the way, making the learning and absorbing of the material even easier. I took one slimy green onion out of my fridge 34 years ago, that wasn't fit to eat + planted it. It grew. I only harvested the greens, allowing it to go to seed. I haven't bought a green onion since. Each time we've moved, I always bring a few with and plant them. In winter, Lincoln NE, I can go out when there's a foot of snow on the ground and harvest. My favorite plant the green onion. Mine are called walking Egyptian onions.

@@badassmother1426 Hi, Since you have 34 years of experience, I thought it best to ask a pro! I've only just started to grow some of these from some of my store bought cuttings. How do you get the plant to seed? do you have to leave the plant to mature without harvesting at all?

my elementary school grounds had a mud puddle up by the road and behind a utility closet that had green onions growing in it. Or maybe they were a wild related plant. There was yellow rings inside near the roots. Used to love just going and grabbing them and munching on them. Teachers would get so mad at that for whatever reason. No don't eat the free wild onions!!! But coming from a poorer background they made for a nice supplemental snack. Last year my service dog lost her battle with cancer and this month I've been slowly recovering finally by going back into gardening like when I was a little kid and tonight I picked up some green onions in order to grow my own. Haven't been able to go back to my elementary school grounds in years so I couldn't just go harvest those ones. They're not the same but this comforts me anyways. Thank you for making a little video that shows where to cut them and how much water and when to switch out the water and when to plant them. Appreciate it.

I recently got a few fancy single-serving yogurts that come in a glass jar and am so glad I washed them out to reuse them. They’re the perfect width and height for green onions. Not as wide as a typical mason jar so the green onion doesn’t tip over into the water.

It was the first plant in my garden. My gf doesn't like "regular" onion but she does like spring onion. And she came up with the idea to regrow them in a glass of water and I kept on paying attention to the way they grew back but at one point they started to not really do so well and rot and everything. And then I planted them in the garden and suddenly they started to grow a lot faster and get really big. Now we do it every time we get spring onion: we put them in a glass of water for a week and plant them directly into our garden. Until they are literally everywhere in the garden. And her mother gave me a whole giant pack of seeds for different vegetables. Among them were also spring onions but I don't think I'll need the seeds for those, I have an endless supply of regrown ones.

Great video! I decided to shorten the water-soaking stage by planting the cuttings in a pot after a couple of days. I gently tied the cuttings to wooden skewers with some stretchy garden tape so that they could be planted at the correct height without falling over. When they are rooted and growing, I'll remove the skewers. The skewers (about the size of a chopstick) are ideal, but I found even a wooden toothpick will work in a pinch - tied to the cutting, it goes deeper into the soil to keep the cutting upright during watering. If you get Chinese takeout, you could use the freebie chopsticks.

Despite it being the winter, they appear vigorous, regardless of the actual width of the onion bulb or segment thereof. Currently mine are just a light green. I have a soil mix (soil, peat, vermiculite, manure) that I use for my gardens that works great, this is what I used for planting the scallions but they don't have that deep green color on the top part of the plant. Maybe a dose of some fertilizer heavy on the nitrogen? Great video by the way.

This looks great! Just cut the bottoms off my last two store boughts, lets see how we do!
Question, would you recommend keeping them separate from other plants? I have a longer planter that is about to have an opening (the Parsley is bullying the shorter plants out of sun and going to move to its own pot) so I'm curious if it would do well with neighbors from a different species? Its neighbors would be Oregano & Thyme, with some Chives a bit further down.

Happy sunshine morning! Adventure Time! I snagged one of my husband's G.O and wanted to see what would happen if I put it straight into soil and (we call em Phillip) Phill stated growing faster then I thought! Within 2 days, Phillip is bigger then original stalk I started from! So I had to jump on this fun adventure and see what I started lol thank you so much for all this helpful information. Now that I know the proper steps lol Phillip will be legendary! I'm excited for the next plant! I'm going to go see if you have any videos on garlic lol it started sprouting on the counter! Lol!

What are some other plants that don't require as much efforts because I live in an apartment and am interested in growing more veggies? On that note, the green onions would still grow?

May I share what we do in Hawaii? We don’t pull them. We just cut them off as we need to and leave the roots or replant old dried bulbs in the ground. They grow back to full size many many times before needing to either seed more or replant new bulbs. Green onions love lots of water. They grow very fast with one year round sunshine and warm weather.

Do these self multiply new 'bulbs' in ground or do you have to plant seeds or new root stock to increase your crop. If these can self multiply how is that done ?

I've found they will go dormant and come back with more shoots after a winter....but I've never had them multiply within a season.

I have a question about watering after transplanting, could you water the medium before transplanting the onions from water into the medium and be fine!? Just something I've always done I've wondered if it's the right way or there is a reason not to!

Earlier today I was looking at some green onions and thinking about how good they are. So tyvm for this video, you've answered all of my questions😀

Sorry if this is a stupid question but how does the “unlimited“ part work? Is it bc you only ever cut the greens? Or do they multiply if I leave them in the ground after the season? Do I need to collect the seeds? Obvious baby gardener here 😅🌱
    Love your videos, so helpful!

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  Рік тому +1

Yes, in soil they will send out side shoots, as well, you can keep growing the same stalks over and over....and, at the end of summer they go to seed with literally thousands available to plant!

    Greetings from Norway!
We are going to be trying this project as well at home!
I was wondering about harvesting from the shoots. It will be nice to have them flowering for more seeds but,
How much and where would be best to continually harvest from the growing plants? Is there such a thing as too soon?

  • @debsimister2782

Jeff, beginner question.. when the onions are ready to be harvested, do I pull the whole onion out or do I just cut them at where you cut them like you did at the beginning of the video? Sorry if this is a stupid question

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms

Hey Deb, you can do either! You can pull them up and eat 'em, or you can cut them and the remaining part in the soil will grow back!
