Hello Mary, I've been trying to find the contact info to the community gardens in Te.ple because I was very upset to hear hos theres children who dont have access to food. I know that people can buy pallets for $2 just make sure they are marked with code HT which means heat treated, not chemicals. I've been trying to get neighbors in my apt complex to start planting their food so they won't go without. I've finally seen that the city gardens are listed for sale as a possible commercial property for $100k. I'm very upset. I've got half of the money to pay for a residential lot but I'm wondering if I can win the lotto to find the other half?? I've got a floor plan to build a 4 car garage and apt to have a place to store the equipment but I'm not sure that I will have enough money to but it. Help. I want to offer the kids the opportunity to come plant their food, as long as they're salvaging from leftovers they won't need seeds. I've also read that in order to keep beans? Plant 1 bean per person in the family per type of bean so if they like pinto, or black beans or great northern beans or I've even grabbed 3 bags of 15 bean soup to use as a seed pkg. But I never expected that this land would be sold especially while we are having issues getting supplies. I think this world has gone crazy. 😥

The fact that we are living on a dying planet and the fact that we are in the midst of a pandemic, one sure thinks about more sustainability.
Growing up in Europe after World War II, veggie gardening was a necessity but it was also a wonderful fun way to grow tasty grocery stores right in your backyard.
Homesteading is one of my favorite subjects.
To be somewhere far away being sustainable and independent is a dream I will always have. Sigh

@@dm5129 The planet isn't dying, though. When...and I do mean _when_ humans disappear, the planet will go on without us, eliminating all traces of our existence over time... Growing our own food is just an all-round more sensible approach to providing food, than is reliance on a wasteful, unsustainable system of overseas production and transport to bring food to the table.

Running barefoot in the garden with her was absolute heaven, I'm sure it's that way for you too. I can remember so well what her hands looked like because I always watched them gliding nimbly through the tasks she undertook daily. Obviously I could write a book about her. Wandering around the big old trout ponds with with my little brother as our old stud Showtime, the dogs and a funny little goat followed us everywhere we went. Catching and releasing snakes and tadpoles, chasing the chickens. ❤️ There's something special about being young and spending time like that with our grandparents. Great info! Tip: to force ginger to grow the nodes for new plants quicker, cut up a peeled onion and place several pieces in with the ginger root. In the same way that potatoes will grow their eyes if stored near onions, so will ginger. Once nodes are showing well, then cut ginger into pieces, each with a node, let dry for a day or so then plant. This tip came from an Asian lady's video about how to start ginger quickly, here on youtube.

@@deborahhenderson149 Hi. Her technique to force "eyes" to grow quickly on ginger pieces (and potatoes, too) was to put ginger root pieces in a plastic container, add in some pieces of peeled onion, (about 1/4 of the onion), put lid back on, and wait a few days. There was only onion and ginger in container, no water. Sure enough, after a few days the ginger roots had eyes developing. Once the eyes were established, she removed the onion, allowed the eyes to grow into shoots suitable for planting. The technique sped up the process of getting the eyes to develop into plantable shoots and it sure worked.

Other things not quite so successfully, but the experimenting is a big part of the enjoyment. Most things I just stick in a pot with a good starter soil and it does well. When we first got married we rented a house that was on a muck farm. We had the farmer live in the home next door. He told us when you grow celery you need to wait until after the weather turns cold to harvest. It is bitter before then and also tough. He was a potato farmer. I never knew how good fresh potatoes are from the ones in the store

Hello Mary, I am growing celery. It is about 5 inches tall. I started Romaine lettuce. It is about 1 & 1/2 inches tall. I am trying iceberg lettuce. Never knew about this before!! Really neat. I am going to transfer it to pots. Bought some potting soil. I can't work outside anymore. Used to have a garden when I was young and healthy.
Will keep transferring them to bigger pots. Just doing this for fun and a distraction from my problems. Check them every day!! I always like to create
Something new from nothing. I loved my garden when I had it. Just for myself.
Thank you for your videos. Have been watching them. Celery is beautiful!!
Love UA-cam. I have made fudge with 2 ingredients, also!!
    Donna Marker(age 81). I will keep watching!!

Watching your video, while having morning tea with my two pups at my side, has set the tone for a perfect day in spite of the dull rainy weather we're having here today. This video is right on time. Ever since I heard about the onion recall, I’ve been wanting to learn how to grow red onions at home. Scallions/ green onions literally can be pushed right into the soil and they will grow just as fast.😉

Hi! I have been using Aerogrow hydroponic Gardens for years in my apartment. I grow all sorts of things. But now I'm going to combine your ideas with the hydroponic gardening and see how that goes. Thanks!

I love planting things indoors (have a lot of plant grow lights), especially since things are so hard to get in my remote location. A head of Iceberg lettuce (pathetic little wrinkled heads) cost over $13.00 a head a few months ago. Back down to $5.00, which is also steep. Didn't buy at the higher price but substituted other greens in my diet (celery, broccoli, sprouts, cabbage). Going to be more prepared for next winter.

Love this topic, was thinking about it today as I searched for a new home. Thank you Mary. If harvesting our own, then I off near the base...leave it in the ground. Perfect. My father had an acre garden until her was nearly ninety then he moved up the 45 degree slope to a paddock near the house. For all the gardening, we did not do this. Spring onion and leeks thrive on it going on your examples. Having the existing good roots the plants grow quickly.

Hi Janet, Wonderful! In my next Wednesday video, I take you into my garden and show you how to plant all of these. Stay tuned. :-) How exciting that you are looking for a new home!! Love, Mary

Mary's Nest I live in the mountains in Colorado. I plant my celery in a circle with black newspapers (no colored ink) so as the paper decomposes it feeds the celery, & growing in a tight circle keeps the bugs out & helps hold the water in the roots for sweeter, more tender, crunchier stalks! 👍🏻😁

Nicely made and very informative, thank you!
My Mum already keeps lettuces, cabbages and broccoli in a bowl or jug of water on the windowsill (and I do with celery) because it keeps better there than in the fridge, and we get more out of them as they keep growing. I would not have thought of replanting them in the ground!
I have planted potatoes from scraps before. I might try growing a cabbage or two this way instead of buying a pack of seeds, which take ages to grow!

Another thing I do is I bought strawberries, they were locally grown in commercial farms rather than organic I admit, and harvested the seeds and now have a lot of strawberries in my garden. I've also taken seeds from green peppers I've bought in the store and grown pepper plants, I've taken apple seeds from apples I've eaten, again store bought, and grown them, etc.

I’ve done this too! I’ve tried anything I can get my hands on and that’s how I started gardening. I regrew onions, lettuce, potatoes even grew squash from the seeds, etc. And pepper seeds from store bought. I even have avocado plants and mango now too

That’s brilliant you’ve been able to grow that I would just recommend not regrowing apple seeds as you have a 1/80000 chance it will taste nice and will not copy the variety you grow. They will most likely turn out as crabapples which are not nice. But good job on your other crops!

    • @BridgetKF
      @BridgetKF 3 роки тому +4

@@sidneyhudson7728 You're right there, there is a risk. But if they turn out well, well then sweet, free apples. If they turn out to be crabapples? Cool! Those can be used as a substitute for lemon in some recipes due to how very sour they are.
